View Full Version : Concept Class Sim - Project 03

January 12th, 2009, 06:54 PM
Welcome! This is a continuation of the previous mentor thread by the same name - Concept Class Sim. I decided to start a new thread with this due to a few changes in the build of it, namely that each Project will carry a different theme and that others will be welcome to join at the beginning of each new Project.
Who Can Join In: At the beginning of each Project - anyone with a basic handle on drawing skills who wants to further those skills in concept design.
A special welcome to my mentees from the first CCS thread: LostLimeTurtle, Darknight, Asatira, Velocipro, Quixotic, Dracowyr & z3djinn!
About of this thread: This is an intermediate level Mentorship. I am not going to try to teach you how to draw, but I will certainly be offering advice, critiques, suggestions and a variety of other things.
The purpose of this thread is to simulate concept & design briefs for a range of aspects all in relation to a chosen theme (theme will change by Project), and to encourage growth in a variety of areas (not just your drawing skills) including vocabulary, theory, and participation. Due to the nature of the concept field, much of the assignments will likely revolve around characters and their environments - including, but not limited to: character design, clothing, personality, architecture, accessories and so forth.
My goal is to provide you with direction (in the form of briefs), guidance and critiques. I want you to improve in the execution of your art, your ability to follow briefs creatively, concepting and your own ability to offer constructive critiques to your fellows. Most especially, I want you to see that improvement in your own art.
Thread Structure: is based around Projects. A Project will last anywhere from three weeks to two months. Within each Project will be a series of Assignment Briefs that are designed to build upon each other and are related to the Project theme. I'll start a new thread for each Project. This is so that an earlier Project may continue while a new one begins, and so also, that others can know when a new Project is posted and open to joining.
What's expected of you: If you choose to join in this thread for a Project, let me know at the beginning of the thread - prior to the first Assignment due date. This is so that I'll know how much time I'll need to set aside for responses to you. If you join for the Project, I'll expect you to finish it! I'll post the estimated time frame that the Project will last. I will also expect for you to meet deadlines. (I'm horrible at this as well, and it is something that I'll also be striving for). Projects are designed around a theme, and each Assignment Brief will give you guidelines to follow. You should follow them. Think of them as design briefs from an Art Director.
If you join for one Project, you do not have to join for another - though you are certainly welcome to!
Materials you might need: I'm fond of pencil and paper, so I'll likely request you to begin your drawings on paper (this is for a variety of reasons which I'm sure I'll mention on more than one occasion). Access to a scanner would then be a series suggestion. To finish your concepts, you may then use any medium you are comfortable with, whether traditional or digital. I would not recommend exploring unknown mediums for this thread. It'll likely just be a distraction to you from the briefs.
Alright then! If you have any questions, please let me know either in the thread or by private message. If you plan on joining in for this Project, post up a quick note in the thread, say hello and I'll be looking forward to seeing some of your work!
The first Assignment for this Project will be posted shortly. Cheers!

Project 03 Theme: Character Sylization
Assignment 01: Style & Character Sketches
Estimated Project Length: 6-7 weeks
Loose Syllabus: subject to change :)
Assignment 01 - Style & Character Sketches (1 week)
Assignment 02 - Character One (2 weeks)
Assignment 03 - Character Two & Three (2 weeks)
Assignment 04 - Character Sheets (1 week)
Here's the Deal: This Project is going to focus on style, specifically drawing & character style and carrying that style across multiple characters. This is a good skill to exercise, so that's what we're going to do. I'm going to give you a world description to work within - which is actually quite vast and will offer you plenty of options. Then you'll have to choose three character descriptions from a list, and we'll be drawing them to fit within the world.
About style: The idea here is for you to draw within a style, and to draw multiple characters within the same style. I always thought that Disney did this well. You can match characters to each other and to their worlds by the way they look and were drawn. Compare: the Lion King, Aladdin, Hunchback, Beauty and the Beast, Lilo and Stitch, etc. Pixar also does this very well.
The idea here is to get you to be able to control the style in which you are drawing. Remember that this is an exercise and that I don't expect you to be masters at this, but I do expect you to put some effort into it!
Request: Try to really infuse your characters with personality. Think about the world that they live in; their environment will affect them - what they wear, what accessories they carry, the way they keep their hair, perhaps even the way they walk and stand. Think about any cultural aspects that will make their way into their clothing and personal style.
Your Assignment: Due Monday, January 19th
1. Choose three characters from the list below. Decide which part of the world that they are from (the poles, equator, the moon, etc.) But make a decision and work within it.
2. Research! I think this is a terribly important stage, so I highly encourage research before you begin drawing and to continue to do research throughout the project (whatever project you do). Look up ideas for clothing that would fit with the world - if you set your characters near the poles, they would need winter clothing. If near the equator, desert wear. If they are in space, their clothing would accomodate that. Also look up cultural influences (cultures listed in world desc.)
3. Do some initial sketch ideas. I would strongly suggest silhouettes, or something very close to them. These initial sketches are just loose, quick ideas of form, pattern, personality and style. Don't bother with color or details. Keep any drawings loose.
4. Post this: Your three chosen characters. A summary of your research (both visual and other). Any initial sketches on style and character you've done.
5. Check back to the thread and post some responses to the other's work.
World Description: Descent
1. Setting - Earth-based near future. Technology has steadily advanced, it is post-world war. Space travel is increasing but rife with troubles. The planet's surface is pot-marked by contaminated areas. The environment is slowly degenerating.
2. Relationships - World powers and governments are struggling and declining. The masses are generally unhappy and crime is rampant. There is a section of upper class who live more comfortably, safer and with more luxuries. World population is greatly decreased from 'today'. Space population has dramatically increased. The moon is populated, as well as a number of space living stations.
Major cultural groups: Western (Greek, Roman, Celtic), Russian, and Chinese (w/ other east asian influences).
3. Other Specifics - Weather has turned more to the extremes. North & South poles stretch ice further while the equator is desert & heat & wind. Little temperate climates remain. Air is breathable but thin. Buildings are usually installed with oxygen as well as some climate control.
4. Considerations - Clothing will be different depending on weather conditions, earth vs. space living, and social class. Also take into consideration cultural influences.
Character Options: Choose three.
character descriptions were taken verbatim from a few generators at Seventh Sactum (http://www.seventhsanctum.com/), which sometimtes I find helpful or inspiring, but mostly I just find amusing.
1. Justinian "Juse" - Youth (teen to young adult). This guy makes you think of an unstoppable storm. He has deep-set orange eyes that are like two chunks of amber. His silky, wavy, sand-colored hair is neck-length and is worn in an artistic style. He is average height and has a feminine build. His skin is cream-colored. He has large feet. His wardrobe is impractical and artistic, with a lot of blue. Stubborn, impulsive, sociable, and mildly affectionate.
2. Von Sternn - Mid to late 20's. This soulful gentleman has large black eyes that are like two drops of oil. His silky, straight, chalk-white hair is shoulder-length and is worn in a severe, simple style. He is short and has a broad-shouldered build. His skin is deeply-tanned. He has a large mouth. His wardrobe is risque. Evasive, focused, confident and vaguely hateful.
3. Eli du Santi - Middle aged. This angry gentleman has narrow gray eyes that are like two pools of mercury. He is bald, but used to have fine, wavy, gray hair. He's got a beard and moustache. He is tall and has an athletic build. His skin is ruddy. He has bushy eyebrows and small feet. His wardrobe is flattering, and is mostly green and yellow. Earnest, confident, relaxed and easily fascinated.
4. Osebel - Late 30's. This woman puts you in mind of a waiting vulture. She has hooded eyes the color of fine silver. Her silky, curly, gray hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a waterfall. She is very tall and has an hourglass build. Her skin is light-colored. She has thin eyebrows and large feet. Her wardrobe is classy. Loyal, unsocial and vaguely aggitated. Ambitious.
5. Sabrina Vossen- Youth (teen to young adult). This solemn girl has hooded eyes the color of wild grass. Her luxurious, wavy, black hair is medium-length and is worn in an uncomplicated, dignified style. She has a plump build. Her skin is tanned. She has a hooked nose and high cheekbones. Her wardrobe is artistic, and is mostly brown and blue. Lighthearted and contemplative, but mistaken for bored. Kindly.
6. Corith Delurousa - 30-ish. This tense woman has almond shaped crimson eyes. Her fine, curly, black hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a complex device. She has an athletic build. Her skin is pale. She has full lips. Her wardrobe is no-nonsense and businesslike, with a completely red color scheme. Slightly unfriendly, courageous and focused. Socially assertive.

There is the bulk of my research in terms on environmental conditions, military, clothing, social status's and cities.
I choose these characters:
3. Eli du Santi
1. Justinian "Juse"
6. Corith Delurousa
I choose these people because these are the kind of people to survive a "decent" of humankind. Corith being business-like and able to make the right decisions at the right time. She is focused and courageous, which help with surviving anything. Justinian is described as as "unstoppable storm" which is a fitting leader and a brutal warrior, both needed to climb to the top. Eli is the person that is reminiscent of the old days, before war and greed tore the world apart. He is angry about what the world has become, but can do little about it due to his age. Although angry he is very good at concealing emotions. He is also extremely wise. All these characters would be located in the Mediterranean region, living in the same area, or even city. Each will represent a different view and social status in this new roman-like society that arose because of the need for a strong, and unified government.
Ill be working on my sketches tonight and posting them when i get them scanned. Just thought I should post what I have now, rather than waiting.

Here's my research so far. I am going to continue my research into polar/cold weather clothing and desert clothing; these are the smallest results, but I haven't explored all the possible search terms.
Anywho, the characters really briefly.
1. Justinian: For some reason I decided he'd be pretty good as a Russian-region artist, and as such would look back to the past. The more historic costume seems very bohemian to me.
2. Corith Delurousa: Space, and in a way very upper class, elite.
3. Eli du Santi: desert region.

Project 03 Theme: Character Stylization
Assignment 02: Character One
Here's the Deal: Draw out your first character. Start with sketches, do lots of them - at least a dozen and up to as many as you need. I want to see your ideas, how you started. What was your process? They can be loose sketches or tighter. Do silhouettes if you find them to be helpful. Work out your process for concepting! I want to see your creative process.
On Processes: Some artists have strict processes, others don't. If you find you work better in a more organic format, that's fine and cool - I do as well. But you still work within a process. From start to finish you have steps that you take. So think about how you draw. If you don't really have a process, or haven't settled into one that works well for you, still think about it! Follow one! If you need some ideas, let me know. I can give you some. Working within a structure really is helpful, especially once you've settled into one that you are familiar and comfortable with. I've found that I think less about 'how' to draw and more about 'what' I'm drawing, which frees up creative juices for what's important - the content. So find a process - a step-by-step work flow that you can work creatively within.
Character One: Alright, I'm going to throw a wrench into the works, so to speak. Your first character is a military (wo)man. There is a full description below. I want you to chose one of your three characters and design him/her into the occupation of a Military Officer.
Request: Try to really infuse your characters with personality. Think about the world that they live in; their environment will affect them - what they wear, what accessories they carry, the way they keep their hair, perhaps even the way they walk and stand. Think about any cultural aspects that will make their way into their clothing and personal style.
Your Assignment: Due Monday, February 2nd
1. Pick one of your three characters.
2. Do further research if you need it. Look up references.
3. Design the character within the occupational parameters described below. Work within a process and document that process! Do a number of sketches that explore design ideas, poses, and etc. Complete your character design into color.
4. Post this: Which character you chose. Your documented process, from brainstorming ideas to sketches to rough designs to the final character concept. You do not need a background.
5. Check back to the thread and post some responses to the other's work.
Character One: Military Officer
1. Allegiance: New Siberia - keep in mind that Siberia is in Russia, but they are not deployed (stationed) in Russia.
2. Rank: Naval Forces Captain - Either:
A. Pilot of a single seat bent-wing jet. (no Gundams!) or
B. Long Range Sniper Specialist
3. Deployment Location: the Yarlisai Air Carrier in the Sea of Okhotsk (off the East coast of Russia in the Pacific Ocean, just North of Japan).
4. Uniform Colors: You are limited to the following (but don't have to use all of them) - greys, black, white, red (dark red, crimson), navy. Bronze or gold adornments.
5. Miscellaneous Other: There are attached military uniform images. You do not have to stick exactly to these uniforms, but I want you to draw something that is obviously similar.
Last Notes: If you have any questions let me know! Also. You can post up sketches and work-in-progresses throughout the next two weeks and I'll take a look at them as we go. Remember that your second two characters will be in a similar visual style.

Asatira: He (or she) has to be from Siberia and a Captain. You get to choose his specific occupation (either a Pilot or a Sniper). You also can choose which character (of your three chosen characters).
He doesn't have to be Russian, but that is his current allegiance. Remember to follow the character briefs from the first assignment! Some are more visually descriptive (like eye, hair and skin color, etc).
Cool?

Damjan: I would prefer that you join prior to the first assignment's due date. This is in part so that you submit to the commitment of the entire Project, and partly so that I know what kind of time I need to plan for responses. That said, I'll allow you to join in as I feel like I can take another, and we're still at the beginning of the project. However - yes, you will need to post all of the assignments up so far by Feb. 2nd.

Call girl: Yes, those are pretty good silhouettes. There's no right or wrong way to do them, really. That said, they are typically used to explore the foundational shape of a character. The idea is that everyone (real people, here too) has a unique silhouette - that is, their shape, the way they walk, move, stand, hold their head, where they put their arms. This is what makes them recognizable. If you take well known characters and put them in flat silhouettes, they are recognizable based on their shape. Drawing with silhouettes is so that you can explore these traits without getting distracted by details (specifics of clothing, color, expression, etc). Make sense?
Alright, so I wouldn't mind seeing you revisit your full body silhouettes. They're great except they are leaning a bit to the side, which makes it look like their balance is really off. Try to straighten them out a bit. They also look a bit stocky/short - but that could just be me...
Resources on Silhouettes: DRAWN! The Illustration & Cartooning Blog (http://drawn.ca/2008/04/24/cartoons-as-silhouettes/) - I've linked directly to a post about silhouettes, specifically a page that takes a bunch of common, well-known cartoon characters and puts them as silhouettes to highlight their recognizability (that's not really a word...oh well.)
The Silhouettes (http://www.cbarks.dk/THESILHOUETTES.htm) - a semi-random web sight that may or may not be helpful to you, but is interesting either way. Kind of cartoon-comicy.
Everyone: in case none of you have checked it out, Idiot Apathy has a thread in the mentor forums called Peer Projects, which focuses on the basics of art and drawing. If you've got the time, I'd recommend checking it out. Link: The Peer Project (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=76955). It's a great resource.

Wrenatus:Thanks for the links. I'll take a look. I have yet to start on my first character. Like I said in my PM to you: I have the character in my head. I can see clearly how they look, but when I want to draw it, I loose that image instantly. But I don't worry about it. Tomorrow I'll have my last presentation at school of the last half year and after that I'll have until Sunday to start, explore and finish the character.

The idea of a drawing style is something often talked about, strived for and changed, but not always something that has a definition that is much nailed down. While I much encourage you to develop a personal drawing style or three (and it is something that may or may not take you years to do), this is not quite what I'm talking about with style or character stylization here.
So let me see if I can explain it a bit without just confusing you... (I may ramble a bit)
Style tends to change depending on your medium and drawing technique. Take a look at the batman images I've posted up. Ignore the lone Robin at the bottom for now...
First, just compare the differences between mediums: live action versus animation versus comic book. Your medium & technique - the tools that you use and how you use them - affects the style of your drawing, and thus, the style of your characters. When you use the same medium & technique between characters of a series (such as Batman and Robin, or your three characters I've asked you to draw) they have a much higher chance of looking like they belong together - like they came from the same world, the same comic book, the same animation series, the same game.
Just because I feel like I need to cover both sides, let's look at some similiarities between characters of different mediums. Pretend, if you can, that you have never seen Batman before and aren't familiar with the characters. It would take barely a minute for you to point out all the Batmans and all the Robins in all the pictures, no matter what style they are drawn in. This is largely due to their recognizable characterization. This involves all of the following: costume, pose, icons, colors, identifying features - for Batman: the cape, the ears on his hood, the half mask, the utility belt, the grey and black costume. What makes the Robin character identifiable? Think about it for a minute.
Making sense so far? Let's look at some details...
We can start at the top, but I'm not going to spend much time on the live action stuff right now, since we're drawing here. I just want you to look at the differences between the costumes. Notice the color schemes used - the largest difference can be seen in the two Robins. Robin's outfit changed a bit over the years.
Ok, now the cartoon images. Actually, I think the one on the right is from the old comics, but anyways. What I want you to notice here is the body ratio of the characters. We've got some fore-shortening in the first image, but trust me when I tell you that if Robin was standing right next to Batman, he'd still be about half his size. Cartoons are darned good at this ratio thing. Kids and youths and shrinking elderly are drawn much smaller and skinnier than the strong-man, muscle-bound men types. This is a style - one that is less realistic.
Now think about this: what if you took the two Robins and switched them? Would they 'match' the new Batman?
And that's the question that's going to lead me right to my point. Even though these images are all the same two characters - all the same recognizable characters, even to the point that the styles are a bit similar. In the end, you can't really mix and match them. They wouldn't fit with each other. It would look like you've got an alien from some other world trying to fit into a place that has different lighting, clothing materials and facial features.
Half of style is in materials and techniques. The rest is in the character and drawing - the way you draw it. What I want you to think about with this Project is a common style across multiple characters. This will likely require you to repeat your use of materials and technique. Airbrushing doesn't really match up with colored pencils well. See?
Now take a look at that lonely Robin down at the bottom. He's from the Teen Titans animation series. As far as I am aware Batman doesn't show his face in this one. Whether I'm wrong on that or not... what I want you to do is try to picture what this Robin's Batman would look like. How would you draw him? What technique would you use? What materials?
If you have the time, I would highly recommend drawing this Batman out. Use it for an exercise. Try to match a Batman design to this Robin.
I hope this helps you a bit with stylization. I'm not trying to make you develop a personal style here, though you should certainly seek to do so. What I want you to do is think about and practice a common style for related characters - that is characters that belong to the same world (comic, show, game, etc). Cool??

Wrenatus thanks for your comment:) they are leaning a bit to the side because I squeeze them when I put my scan in to PS :P next time i will resize them in program and then put in PS;) I will try to do this better next time, now I read Loomis and learn a bit about proportion and anatomy, I thinkt that will help me in next assignment.
darknight good job i really like your first image. I dont have to read that she is Corith Delurousa because she look like Corith ;) the second image of Corith as a pilot looks pretty good - except the orange stuff and purple. Yeah, I cant wait to see other work:)

Darknight: You've got some great stuff here. I love all the different angles and concepts that you're working on. I especially like the scribbled-look of of those pieces in the middle - the color exploration ones. That's a great pose for a intro-character concept. It's well balanced, it shows the full body, the clothing, the face, accessories and her pose gives an idea of her character. I'd love to see you work those up into something more refined. Build on them. They're good.
As far as the color schemes, you could go with any of them - just be aware of what color says about the character. Also, remember that the brief limited your color scheme for her uniform - you might want to go back and look at that again.
Great stuff! Keep it up!

[INSERT EVIL LAUGH]
Finally finished. I had a rough week with my finals for this semester. No worries, I passed them all. Art school can be a time-eating-monster! xD
I had only a couple of days to work on the character. I did two silhouettes and I took the one you see below. That's all for my sketches, but as I was designing I looked to a lot of reference and I did post the most important ones.
I found a way to work I have grown to love. I don't know if you guys have a magazine called 'Advanced Photoshop' in the States. I do know it's published in the UK and here in the Netherlands. Anyway, in one issue there was a workshop of designing a fantasy character from silhouette to final piece. It was described very well and I learned a whole lot of that way of working.
Back to the assignment: I chose Eli du Santi to work with. I must day I was surprised to find out the character should be in the military. It was a great challenge and I think I did well. (With the exception of some anatomical flaws.) I don't really went trough a brainstorm process because of my finals but here is my process and the final. I'm not a hundred per cent satisfied with the result.

580751
580749
I chose to do a background. You'll have to forgive me for not holding to the brief. I thought Eli du Santi looked better in an (impression of the) environment. So I painted something loose.
Once everybody has posted their process and finals I'll return to comment your work. :)

really show peices just for yourself to design from, but everybody loves them.

Hi there
Finally I finished my sniper:)
I choose Eli du Santi as a Long Range Sniper Specialist.
Here is my step by step work progress.

Step 1 I do another research.
Step 2 sketch some position and pick up one.
Step 3 I choose one position, start from a sketch one more time in bigger size, then I start to put some color on it.
In the beginning my Eli looks like russian gay-fagat ( you can see it in step 2) I start to irritate and stop working. I read some stuff form Loomis books about proportion, and human head, I think that helps.
So when I "know" the theory- I start work again :) but in practice its still looks dramatically. I spend 1 day to draw him and another 2 days to trying to correct his look . Finally my sniper looks like a russian MEN not GAY:D

When I finish him I decide to concentrate my exercise at one thing.
So I stop drawing everything and concentrate at anatomy and drawing human faces. Yeah, thats a good resolve for a New Year:P

hey guys, these are looking good. Kudos for you who got them posted in by the due date! :) Alright. I'm going to work on some responses for you over the next day or so. I'll also get the next assignment posted up officially. Unofficially, if you want to get started on it, it is just drawing the next two characters from the three you chose earlier.
I'm a little surprised that two of you chose to draw Eli - older people tend to be difficult to portray - it's something about the wrinkles I think, so well done for picking a bit of a challenge subject.

It's too bad we all kinda forgot about this thread. Is it possible to pick it up again or are all of you not willing to continue and Wrenatus are you willing to continue? I know I am.....:)
