speedy again... :\

anyways, i really hope people attempt this topic. it's alot more descriptive than the others have been which is something many of you really need to learn to conceptualize.

what are types of ways something could go over a building?
what shouldn't go over a building?

think of speed issues, envorimential issues....

but remember, have fun :]

Well this is my very very first post on conceptart.org and my very very first DSG.
Thought I'd give it a quick go.

I'm hoping this encourages me to draw more and develope. I would love to draw better.. so here's to practice

This roofbot is for putting out fires and recording the activity to firemen below. It has forward and rear cams and a radio controlled hose to shoot fire controlling chemicals. The legs are on hydrolic shocks that retract and extend to allow easy rooftop movement.

Well, first post...

Inside is a bed for transporting emergency patients, finished of in a rush, liked the practice......

Legs are used for regular walking, as well as the additional possibility of jumping (from building to building), that's why they are "crouched".
Greetings!

Man, you guys are all really good w/ robots!

Comments so far: P_N_R: I like the bed-bot thing, that's a cool idea. The robot could use more of a front end/back end kind of indicator though ... great start!

Beatnik: Sweet concept man! One thing I would do is thicken up the outline, the bot looks kinda transperant around the edges, and i bet a better sillouhet(sp?) would make it Pop!

Jebus: Nice camera placement, good job on the robots perspective ... the building could go for some more detail though, right now it kinda looks like an eraser sticking into the sky :)

MJW: Bad ASS I love that raised leg concept, totally cool :) Welcome!

lichtpartikel: That's the sharpest looking rescue bot i've seen! You've got great shading and the concept is cool, i'd say ... unsharpen some edges so he doesn't cut people

davi: I soo envy your linework ... that just exhudes confidence :) killer concept :)

Now for mine ... First robot I've ever done, was a real challenge, but I learned alot and had some fun with this one!

He's a roof jumping rescue bot that can snag up people in danger with his front dull claws while scurrying around with his bottom claws. In his "head" thing, he has sirens, first aid kits, and other neat goodies i'm sure!

C&C's always welcome and very much appreciated.

P_N_R: your bot looks great. i love the lines and shading. maybe the feet need a little work though.

Valcon: the claws of your bot look also pretty dangerous to me.

Sorry guys..but I'm not participating in this one...my friggin' computer keeps bugging up...then it's stuck!!..then dll not found or something...AAAARGHH!!!:machinegu:cat;:chainsaw:
...an' i was busy with such a nice idea....ah..next!

Edit:hmm....it seems a bit(there's still time..so there's still hope)..that this is not a very popular topic....and just when it's a very important one.....mechanics are needed to get a god view on pespective and mechannical functioning....but..I suck at that...so...when my comuter works again...grmbl...then I will post a few pencil sketches I've done..and they're baaad....it looks a bit...cubistic...is that possible to post?...it's a art form..but it's definitly not a concept art form....

N.Y.P.D. 'FireSeeker'

The N.Y.P.D. started experimenting with robotic technology after the great fires of 2057. After too many fire fighters were lost they contracted Americas largest robotics company 'Amos and Richards' to create a new breed a fire fighter. The A.F.S.S. 'FireSeeker' is a small highly mobile fire detection unit able to scour the roof tops of New Yorks deepest rural areas to find sources of heat that could be a fire beginning. When a fire is located it sends a signal to all local A.F.S.S's which gather to the signal to fight the fire. Hundreds currently patrol the streets of New York and if tests prove succesful they will be deployed in thousands in all cities of the world. The Police forces and militaries of the world are also becoming very interested in the technology.

Great work all... For a topic that I thought would send people screaming there are some great ideas and well executed concepts.

Thanks for the comment Volcan: I like the way you taken a different route to most. Those tendrils are kinda scary ya know.

Davi: I love your technique. Exudes professionalism...

This topic sent me Screaming...haha I haven't had to much experience with robots, but it was kinda fun making this up. ^^

This is a police laser bot. So if the criminals won't come out of the building they get friend! mwhahah!

http://members.lycos.co.uk/vbcserenity/art/dgsrobtt.jpg

I'm really loving the designs you guys are comming up with.

littleone, I really like that perspective. Cool way you did the buildings.

lichtpartikel, Cool design, though how does it help people? haha I guess mine doesn't help people too much though either. Oh well:P

Valcon Jet - Thats a cool techniqic. Did you do it in black first then outline it in white/grey?

P_N_R - I like how you colored that. Quite smooth looking. haha maybe you should make a hurse like that.

Beatnik - cool idea, quite a useful bot. I suggest that if you were to go on, you should make the bot glow where the fire reflects off. ^^

Jebus - Great perspective. ^^ The bottom kinda reminds me of those people who put suction cups on the bottom of their feet and try to climb.

mjw - Dude, I like that!

davi and Hazzard - I really like how you guys did a more rounded design. Always liked those kind of robots. Are you going to color it Davi?

Miau- Neat spider design. I like how you did the legs. :D

Hazzard - Cool.

Miau - I love what you drew it on.

Iiori - Very well developed. Cool concept.

Thanks for the feedback valcon and Iiori. I added a little more to it with the outline and some glow. Then I thought it would make sense to use laser guidance to tell it distances between buildings and for balance. I also installed a Coke® machine and a pencil sharpener.

I struggled like hell with this evil topic, but I was determined to post something after the torment I've had with it.

OLSEN - Another beauty! Very impressive.

Miau - Looks like you really gave that some thought. I like it.

Hazzard - I love your backstories! Nice design.

Valcon Jet - Really original. Cool.

P_N_R - Very nice.

Beatnik - Good concept and pic.

Davi - Thanks for the pep talk! Not sure about the fun part, though... :D

Well done to all. Too tired for more comments, I'm afraid. I'm off to bed to dream of an easier topic tomorrow...

The gargoyle shell serves as roof decoration -- it runs on padded feet, the upper arms are for general manipulation, the tail serves as counterweight and anchor in case extra equipment needs to be hauled up or people need to be lowered down. Other equipment and supplies are kept in the cylinder.

This is a tough topic, in my opinion, and I salute everyone who posts on it =)

At least 6 legs! :D ;)
Or something with even more legs (kudos Wystro)!

Wystro: Very creative concept! Flesh out the lines a bit and link the cylinder to the gargoyle torso and it'll look sweet!

Matt Dixon: Thank you for the comments, and yours looks awesome! I love the smoke effect, very cool. The one thing I can crit is that the blue reflection on it's right (left side of the image) leg is a bit too bright at the top, and it sorta bugs my eye ... i'd fade that / smooth it just a tad :)

Beatnik: Much much better, the glow on the front claw looks freakin awesome.

EndDrive999: Red X ... =/

Olsen: !!! Ever so sweet, it has a really good feel to it, though I can't quite make out what's going on ... it looks to be firefighting or something like that. Also, the blur coming from the very top looks a little too ... straight? Maybe ... I can't quite put my finger on it ... the pic has great motion though!

Tereyon: Hehe, he's cute :) I imagine him being very small and waddling around on the rooftops :P

Halis Asteros: Cool concept, just needs to have the lines straightened out ... with the jagged lines like that, it makes the drawing look indecisive, imo ... I don't mean to be rude, it's just my humble opine~ :) Keep at that though, you can already color way better than me :P

Iiori: Thanks for the comments, and yeah, I just scribbled out a basic design in black, then erased away the edges and highlights to create the illusion of detail. I love the coloring on your pic, those lights are great! The only crit I have is that the world "Police" looks kinda outa place ... I'd have it bend around the contour of the bot a bit, maybe shade it to fit with the bots shading some more. Great pic though!

Miau: O god thats awesome, but, I gotta say, if it was coming to save me, I'd probably have a heart attack!

Hazzard: Cool design and good use of shadows. The lights on the buildings in the background are a little too bright though, sorta messes with the depth of the image.

littleone:  it's jumping at me?! The bot looks great, but the buildings in the background have their perspective a little off ... the lights towards the bottom should be vertically spaced closer together to give the forshortening effect. Nice and creative though!

lichtpartikel: That color job is looking sweet! Totally different than what i'd imagined, and I like what you've done better. And you are right, on second thought, my robot looks kinda shreddy too :)

Thanks for the comments all, you guys are awesome, especially for posting on this tough topic!

well i'm very impressed with how much effort you guys put into this.

i'm sure 90% of the artists on this forum will struggle with this topic, mech design is much harder than organics, but... the people who actually came through, get MUCH respect from me.

i don't really have time for it, so prolly won't do a 'real' one with actual mech design on it. what is the purpose of this mech, you say? why to climb on buildings! wohey ;)

miau: nice. i always like mechs inspired by animals.

lichtpartikel : that's sweet! reminds me a little of 'shadow of the beast', you know those weird "two-legged cows with oval heads" - or however i can describe them - that were on the poster for it =)

valcon jet : something about that appeals to me in a big way. nice.

well the sketch part was easy took about 10 mins.....I know the shape is off....I never really did any industrial design in schooll.......however the coloring part was painful that took 30mins.....

the machine has 4 contractable legs on either size...incase it needs more than four legs to operate....doors on both sides....can be operated with drivers(2) on either side...so it can move forwards or backwards easily....and as you can see in the pic it is also remotely can be controlled....and the inside crew area and passanger bays rotate to accomidate what position the robot is in...

here's my dsg. it's more organic than mech. the tentacle legs allow versatility while in motion. it has a very spiderlike movement and can scale walls as well. the rescued can lay in the back of the vehicle (where the red cross is).

Very quick PS sketch. 15 min max. I am trying so hard to keep up. Grrr :) :xx: My first try at making a robot. His legs are chunky at the bottom cause they fold out..(nifty eh?) so he can be taller to get to the tops of the buildings. Okay so I guess it isnt that original. *pops my own bubble* :bootyshak

Lots of good ideas all around. Weeee!

December 4th, 2003, 07:42 PM
Okay, I've never done any mech design at all, so I figured I'd better start, right? Only had time for a quick sketch, though. The idea is that the joints on the legs swivel almost all the way around, and the toes splay out to grip things, so it can essentially climb up and over things. The little arms are retractable grasping wotsits, to manipulate items, and the little dome is a storage space for things (medical equipment, whatever). The part sticking up from the rear houses an antenna. Give me crits, I need to learn mechs!!!

http://thirdroar.com/dj/2003-12/dj189-mech.jpg

Might be able to try to add color later ...

[edit - uploaded a newer one, I had to give it at least a LITTLE bit of shading ...]

I have to agree with davi! Industrial design's HARD. And seeing people like feng doing his thing, makes me ill and sick to the bone :p

Here it is! and bigger! (http://www.deviantart.com/view/4098475/)

I did a lot of stuff i have never done before in this.. mainly the pink and green lighting.. i kind of imagined this robot in a city with a lot of neon lights... this took me a long time so i would appreciate comments and crits very very much :D

This emergency robot was built to deal with riots and social uprisings.. which is why he totes a a big gun :D i cant really see him walking along the top of building... maybe walking alongside the top of buildings.. but im sure he could walk on them too :D but not without bringing down roofs and causing destruction.

@Davi: very nice robot with a great design. It really looks like it belonds on roof tops... looks functional

@lichtpartikel: looks really nice. Great design.. don't worry about the roofs... mine would bring them down too

@mjw: see,s like a functional practical approach to scaling a roof.i like the exhaust pipes with the exhaust... nice touch..

@Jebus: the idea of it being a car is kind of cool. but how does it stay stuck to the side of the building as it is riding up?

@Beatnik: a good use for a roof walking robot. nice concept and picture

@P_N_R: great! reminds me of a frog :D this is a really cool design and it seems very functional

@Valcon: really cool robot design. Very good for being a first one. and even for not being your first one

@littleone: looks like a really cool robot. i like it's little legs and the robots joints a lot. You could add more depth to the window by insetting it a bit

@hazzard: i like the backwards bending knees and i like the cameras in front. the feet look really nice and so do those bricks

@Miau: this is amazing :D you really seem to have thought out the movement of all the joints and of the mechanics of the robot spider i try to do that too but i could never come close to matching the detail in your art. my first thought was a spider as well

@Iiori: i like the things floating around him and the texture on the metal. i think you could work on your joints just a little

@Halis-Aetrous: I like the small round body and the kind of scrapped together look of it. I love the randomly placed lenses on the body when you draw joints try not to simply make them spheres. I see a lot of people doing this and i have never been able to really imagine them working..

@Terayon: seems like it has a lot of functions. good

@Olsen: Amazing.... you always do something really great. You seem to be really good with mechs

@enddrive: i like the boxy shape of it, the eyes, its legs, and the little teeny arms underneath its body

@mattdixon: beautiful- i love the arms and the giant lens very nice colors i love the contrasting warm and cool colors

@Wystro: i like the idea of it being disqguised as an ornament

@al-x: very cool spider and a beautiful drawing. i would love to see something that was up to par with the standards you set for yourself

@signature. I dig the simplicity. sometimes it is nice

@Vigil: cool design, nice colors

@fresh: i have not seen too much of your other things but this is my favorite so far, i like its sleek design

@plaf: ahh,, that is a huge spider! Your mobile gun is really cool

@jack frost: some really cool ideas. nice design

@stormeffex: I like this one a lot. i love the tentacle legs and the drivers cockpit

@crave my nightmares: i would like to see how his legs work

@draighathar: haha i like his little face. it is cute.. it looks like a little animal with his tail wagging.. i love the many toes on his feet. nice shading. maybe work on the joints a little.. i said it before... i dont think little spheres would work for joints :\ if im wrong then someone correct me and i will apologize and shut up about the sphere joints

@scumworks: great lighting. i love the atmostphere and the colors. nice design

commenting on all these was tiring @.@;; im gonna go to bed. see ya

more mindless praise for everyone :D i had to disable smileys cuz i had to many :D

davi - looks nice, but i have no idea what's going on :D

lichtpartikel - very nice, looks kinda like a chicken :D

mjw4745276 - cool idea for steep roofs. i like the steam/smoke, looks old fashioned

Jebus - wheels look kinda wonky and positioned wrong, but it looks good anyway and i very much like the ideas

Beatnik - cool, looks pretty old fashioned yet futuristic at the same time. nice water and fire effects.

P_N_R - nice lighting and design

Valcon Jet - cool, like the design in just 2 colors :D

lichtpartikel - yeah, looks good colored too :D

littleone - cool, its a little to blurry in the front, but i can still see the basic idea. nice buildings.

Hazzard - very nice lighting and environment. robot is cool too :D

Miau - very cool, like the textures, color, and overall design. suction cups and claws and feet, it looks like it could actually work :D

Iiori - the design is nice, but for some reason that red doesnt agree with me

Halis_Aetrous - very simplistic, let sleek and stylish :D looks good, i get the basic idea

Terayon - that thing has a ton of functions :D if you redo it, try adding a 3rd leg for balance :D

OLSEN - very nice, like the motion and colors, its a little blurry and i cant tell exactly whats going on. youre one of the best here, i love your work

EndDrive999 - i think the buildings look nice, good texture, nice lighting on the robot.

Beatnik - yep, improved it nice :D

Matt Dixon - very curvy nice colors, great lighting and smoke, the the overall atmosphere is good.

Wystro - very odd, much like yesterdays stuff (pink strongman), but very good. some creative stuff :D

al-x - very nice perspective and design. i like that face in the corner :D

Signature - very nice solid colors, car looks a little wonky though

vijil - great lighting and design

fresh27 - damn, whats with that cartoony crap? i hope you're working on some more realistic stuff behind the scenes ;)

Jack Frost - very nice, like the talons :D

stormeffex - great everything. looks kinda like an eagle.

Crave My Nightmares - weird and humanoid, i like :D

DraigAthar - yes, very odd, like the lighting, and the little extra legs :D

scumworks* - aaaaaaah thats great, my favorite. great lighting and design, great moody atmosphere, great and so on :D looks very dusty and windy

Hey Bretton, I actually agree with you, the little spheres wouldn't work as joints. I was hoping to come back and develop them into something more appropriate, but in the meantime I needed something to put there! Heh. I think I need to do some research on machines in general to figure that sort of thing out.

Just for the fun of it, I'm posting a more worked-on picture. The original went up because I kept to the hour-and-a-half suggested limit. My brain had a tough time wrapping around it, and I used up every minute of that time to get to the post I put up.

I'm so used to taking all the time that I want to make a polished image -- this place is like art boot camp! Whatever topic doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

There are always people both more and less proficient at execution, but the thing that sets each of us apart from the other is our point of view. I marvel at what is in everyone's brains, and I thank each and every one of you for coming up to the table and showing what you do.

Valcon Jet -- thank you for your feedback! I made changes based on what you said. That, and I gave him more counter-weight so he wouldn't fall off the roof.

:) Wystro

Well since its nice to get crit, and since I’m in a good mood, I figured Id do an exhaustive crit. That and it seems to be the fashion at the mo!

davi: you’ve been an inspiration from the start. I can see you’re more comfortable with organic stuff, but still a very good design, although you haven’t specified what it does.

Lichtpartikel: I love your nick, german? Your style is similar to mine, very sharp. I love aggressive lines like that! Neat colour choices in the second version, I like the cockpit glow.

Mjw4745276: Steampunk is one of my favourite genres. A good sketch, and the background is effective.

Jebus: Camera angle is neet. Definitely an ACME design!! I can just imagine the noise that thing mist be making.

Beatnik: Looks very alien, like from an old sci fi horror. Definitely got that retro feel, but for some reason I expect The Tick to come bounding into the picture at any moment! SPOOOOOON!!

P_N_R: Are you studying industrial design? Your medium (airbrushing?) is very appropriate. Gj!

Valcon Jet: Again an extremely cool retro effect. Your style is inspirational.

Littleone: excellent first try at this sort of thing! Nice angle. The blurriness really helps, although the perspective on the forward arm is a little off to my eye… gj though.

Hazzard: What filter is that? I like your style though, esp. the legs.

Miau: Interesting paper, interesting design. Does a person go in the abdomen?

Iiori: Nice metallic effect, I could never get that. The criminals get friend you say… well I guess that’s one way to deal with it! Peace, love and harmony!

Halis: One of the more practical designs, although another leg would help! Some of the other posts have borrowed from parts of yours it seems.

Terrayon: That thing should be a Victorinox, it does too much stuff! Anyway neet sketch, reminds me of a chicken somehow.

OLSEN: I agree, mechs are one of my favourite subjects. Your design is simple yet effective, is that the other leg blurred into the bg? And does it move to the left? An inspirational work with great colouring.

EndDrive: Simple and effective. Feels more like rain to me, but well done.

Beatnik: … I preferred it before! The lasers are good though, they make it leek even more alien.

Matt Dixon: Hard topic you’re right. That picture is proof that a “bad” concept which is fleshed out can end up looking good anyway.

Wystro: That’s very strange! Its like… very strange! Congrats on the most original design yet!

Al-x: I like this one. And I feel your pain, oh thou brother in laziness.

Signature: That’s huge! Very nice. Almost looks like a 3D model.

Vijil (me): That SUCKS! Wtf inspired that p o s? Just kidding!

Fresh27: Very original design. And your background, though masterful, isn’t up to Michaelangelo’s standards. Ouite.

Plaf: \\\\ THIS JUST IN, A GIANT KILLER TARANTULA IS TAKING OVER THE CITY !! THE CITIES GIANT HELPER ROBOT TARANTULA WAS DISPATCHED TO ELIMINATE THE THREAT, BUT DOESN’T SEEM TO BE ABLE TO FIND IT!! LETS GO TO THE SKY CAM –

IT APPEARS THE KILLER TARANTULA HAS DESTROYED THE HELPER! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!! WAIT A MINUTE FOLKS… ////

: ) nice

Jack Frost: cool. I’m not the only one who hates colouring! Good job.

Stormeffex: This is my favourite today. I have no words.

Crave: Keep it up, getting better all the time. Cool ideas.

Draigathar: I like the concept. But the tail has me befuzzled…

Scumworks: Don’t talk about your lighting, its very effective. Awesome mood.

Plaf again: wikkid. Almost Star Wars wouldn’t you say?

Bretton: Medievil rocks! Steampunk too. Very original.

MindCandyMan: Very nice lighting. The cables are a neet touch.

Josephry: lol. Very cool. Btw is the roof at all inspired by the animatrix?

Spidermonkey: how practical. Neet angle, jumpers eye view.

Devilbunny: finally a different mode of locomotion!! Nice ideas.

Faxtar: very cool. Spiderman 0wnz0rs. And that dude does too.

Bkmini: yeah. This one has mood, design, lighting, everything. Very nice.

Wystro again: my mind is blown. I don’t get it! neet.

Well done all! When i first saw the topic i was afraid we would only get one post, and that would be Davis. Vehicles has not a very glorious history here at DSG. This was a step in the right direction, and i hope topics like this will come more often in the future.

Wystro, congrats, you got post nr 7777 on that last one, go buy a lottery ticket or something.

And thanks to all who commented on mine. It inspires me to try harder. Thanks.

Edit: I missed your question Vijil, you posted while i was typing but heres the answer: Yes, thats supposed to be a blurred leg. I had it a lot more in focus at first, but since the foreground leg turned out much better and i couldn´t spend more time on the background leg, i just knocked it back and moved on. The robot moves to the left.

And, i didnt say what it was at first, it´s a robot that cuts holes in roofs with a laser to let firemen get into buildings easier.

I'm utterly impressed by the way everyone's risen to this challenge.

Signature - That little car rules all!

vijil - Really good. Sketchy but solid.

Plaf - Good work. Your style has loads of punch. The sentry gun is great. Very flattered to remind you of Josh Kirby. :)

Stormeffex - Very nice style.

Scumworks - What a beautiful pic! Love the colours.

Bretton - The colours, style and particularly the design are exceptional. Hats off to you!

MindCandyMan - Nice! He's character.

Spidermonkey - Great idea.

bkmini - A very plausible design. Nice job.

Wystro - Simply badass.

Sorry I missed a few, bit a big thumbs up to all..!

Shoot!! I really meant to do a colored piece today but with all the excitement over the new thunderdome and stuff, I just didn't get around to it. Here's my sketch anyway, looks like I wasn't the only one with the grappling hook idea. Its official though- Rockhead vs. William B. Hand in the Thunderdome!! I'm excited and terrified at the same time, it will be fun.

Late again... The DSG topic changes at a different time every day?

I went with a fire department hover drone. These are deployed from the back of fire engines and hover up to extinguish the upper levels. The clamp on the front is used to carry people to saftey, or move obsticals. Basically a flying fire extinguisher.
