I had posted here about this before but i cant find my post now so i will make this one.
I am about to apply to rsad and after reading up on it here i have to say i am getting pretty worried. while i love CA, and i love to draw, im very serious about becoming a good artist,
im not sure if my life drawing is up to par with what they want. I love to draw but have never had any classes outside of highschool.
I have an associate degree in digital art and can do good 3d stuff but im not sure if that will be enough. so im going to post some of my work here to get some feedback
i also have a full 2 min demo reel, which is my biggest strenght but im not sure if they even care about your prior 3d knowledge

that is not all i have to send. but you guys get the picture im sure. I really do love doing 3d CG. so even if i cant get into rsad that wont stop me from doin this.
so please tell me what ya think
edit: also has anyone heard things about vancouver film school?

I am also going to be applying to RSAD for next fall here is what I have to say about the stuff you posted up.
your 3d stuff is very nice (you probably knew that)
ok about the drawings...
I think it would be a good idea to NOT send the burne hogarth copies in. Drawing from pictures or books isn't what they want to see. If you could find someone to sit still and do studies of them it would be a totally different deal.
I think you should try to get some gestures in there too. drawings of people doing things... capture their movement and form in 15 seconds to one minute. If you can't get to a life drawing class, go to the mall or something.
from what I hear there are people accepted solely on their drawing skills and have never touched a computer, and there are people who have very solid 3d skills but their drawing isn't quite there. You would definitely fit in the latter.
About VFS- I lived in Vancouver for a month this last summer. The school is definitely nice and they have their share of nice graduates. but its just another certificate program. you already have 2 years of that under your belt why would you want an 18 month certificate? I am sure a lot of it would be repeated stuff. I doubt for the money that it is it would really be worth it. You could do the same with 20 months locked in your room learning on your own. (ok maybe not but I am just trying to make a point) so yeah...
Good luck with the ringling admission, hope to see you there! I will be posting my portfolio up in January sometime probably.

undergroundkg,
have you actually submitted yet?
cuz i think you are stressing out about this alittle too much. Go ahead and submit and talk to the admissions people. ask them if they think your portfolio is lacking in any area. you can always submit more stuff as needed. I just graduated as an illustration major, and they were very helpful with me. i sent them some stuff and called them. they said hey we'd like to see some more of this... and i did a couple more peices and sent them in. i only opened a few of your links but what i saw was plenty impressive for admission. while alot of computer animation students draw really well. there are some there who don't draw as well and that's ok. there will be plenty of chance to work on that at school. The figure drawing club there (FEWS) is awsome. they meet daily as well as alot of the figure instuctors will let you sit in on their drawing and painting classes if they have room and see you are passionate about drawing.
just wanted to encourage you. don't give yourself an ulser worrying about it. leave that stress for getting a job.

hey, your 3d models are looking good, saw this thread on cgtalk while back looks like you made some good progress on your latest model, i would make sure to give credit to feng zhu on the final image, i doubt ringling would like you not acknowledging the original concept artist. About your figure yeah it could use sme work, id say focus on that for the last couple weeks before the deadline, i would submit your 3d real they do look at that stuff but mainly look at figure, check out the life drawings, learning, techniques forum here its got some great advice and figure drawing if you dont have people to draw from then draw animals, try the petting zoo its a great place to go.

I just graduated ringling CA,
your modeling looks great, I'm not sure how concerned they'll be with the modeling side of things though... it didn't matter when I applied...
I'd say add some gestures as well and work on proportion and dynamics in your poses... contrast . (of line and angle that is)
thats what jim wants to see... great life drawing
send the stuff in regardless :) never hurts to just apply
... just my opinion

osborne, how was the work load for ca? is there time to do extra life drawing with groups of people such as FEWS?

workload as in any art school is what you make it, you can get by not doing so much... and maybe pass, but It'll be obvious to your classmates and employers...
there's always time for fews..
I wasn't one of those fews every day sort of people though...
just every once in awhile...
4th year is the most hectic with your senior film... No one has much time for anything else... life, fews, sleep... etc
but its something you have to do to make it..good luck,

hey steven,
mine was the pretty unlucky head... surreal, weird one of the year... (cause every year has one right)
the job is good, it took a bit of getting used to being professional, some settling you know...
but now we're chugging away on the film and I'm enjoying it a lot.
keith is at reel fx in dallas, and I believe he's having a great time as well

I am also looking forward to applying for the CA program. I am wondering if there is enough time to have a part-time job and do everything for school? I'll post some of my work once I get my website up. PT O. I would love to hear about how your projects went, what you did in classes, and any other experiences that you had at Ringling. Any good teachers or classes that you highly recommend?
Cheers:chug:

sure you have some time to make a bit of money.. if you're lucky you can get paid to work on class work monitoring the labs... you can even work for student life as an RA and not have to pay for housing... save money that way... so yeah all that is possible.. you can't spend all your time in front of a computer and call yourself an artist... haven't we seen enough of that man vs technology shit:bash:
gotta be balanced... get out of the dark room
I split my time now between animating and playing in my band here in LA... I'd die without either of them
just my opinion...
the classes in ce are set for you, you have no choices except for liberal arts classes and studio electives.. but the classes are good, they are what you would want to take... and they are always changing so even my experience being recent, is going to be different than current students..
same goes for techers.. I Had jim and ed... everyone had deborah... and they worked out just fine.. ringling is a great place.. its as close to a normal college experience that you'll get in an art school.. and phyllis and cyndi work hard to get companies to come to campus and interview every year...
good luck people
