Hey guys,

Not too sure if anyone's gonna dig on this, but thought I'd post an officially released still image from one of my animations in ROTK. It's only a couple seconds onscreen, but I guess it's not everyday you get to animate the Witchking on his Steed; so, needless to say, I savored it.

enjoy.

Very nice! I can't wait for the flick to come out, and this pic will be very helpful when texturing my creature sculpts. :)

Indeed. That's a few seconds of pure quality time.

So you work at Weta digital, eh? That's pretty cool. With LOTR, they're rapidly becoming to the film industry special effects field what IL&M was at its peak.

Although I think if I were at Weta digital, I would goof off all day just messing around with the AI soldiers in "Massive."

wow thanks for sharing this.

I just wanted to let you know that me and my nerdy friends talked over and over and over about that legolas jump. It was the main topic of discussion for like a week. That was freakin unreal.

so coro, now you're working in computer games... while hatala is working in films? interesting :)

Did you do the concept design and modeling? EDIT: that sounds harsh- oops! It's just that I don't find this image very compelling- quite the opposite! I wanted to know your involvement before making any statements. I'm in a fakking crunch right now, too, and type ever so slowly...

Hey cool, thanks guys! Glad we got some fans of the films, woot!

Just to clarify, I am an animator, so that's really all i do. I don't model, write shaders, or anything of that sort, just straight up anim. So, props on this pic really goes out to the shader guys, modeling dept, creature dept, comping, etc; i only made the sucker move/his pose. Also, they zoomed up on it for the still, so in the flick it's actually a bit further off (sorta spoiler: he's perched on the Black Gates, bwaha!)

As far as that Legolas shot goes (gee, thanks Coro, lol); that one was brutal. Believe it or not, I actually animated him jumping on that horse 9 different ways, then they picked their favorite. Talk about trial by fire. I still look at it and cringe, but glad some of you thought it was passable.

There's some great stuff ahead for you guys in ROTK, hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did creating it.

rock on..

I remember about 5 years ago when I first heard the films were being made I got a sick feeling in my stomach. I was so scared that it would turn out to be a disneyed-up version of an eternally classic and phenomenonally DEEP story and universe.
But, when I saw all the concept work and art and models and armour and sets and research on the website and surrounding media I couldn't have been happier. These movies had LOTR geeks working on them. Not only was there old and new talent working together, but those talents weren't very well known in the mainstream, if you catch my drift (i mean really really mainstream, not trying to understate the outstanding reputations of those involved). This meant that these guys could put EVERYTHING they had into this, and I don't think a single element of the cast and crew slacked off on their part of the project.
It is the dedication and the guts of those involved to take it so seriously that has made these movies a triumph.
I'm a self-confessed LOTR geek, and it is beautiful to see the molded interpretation of all these different talents of what the LOTR world is. What Middle Earth means to them.
That image above stirred me up man, I got butterflies all over again, I simply can't wait to see the final product.
kudos to you and all involved.

Must be amazing to work on such a film, and I cannot wait to see this this in action.

I would give anything to just sit and watch the concept sculptors do their thing....I would just watch and learn. Maybe if they do THE HOBBIT I can sneak my butt in there. (hehehe) :)
