Fun Topic! Eager to see everyones idea's for this one. :D
Jumped on this one right away, started a few sketches.
Most likely gonna stick with the catterpillar, but done in a robotic sci-fi fashion. Also gonna try with a downward angle perhaps and see how that ends up.

I'd like to try this, I'm new here, but this stuff is perfect for getting back into the groove, and getting some portfolio stuff at the same time. :P
Just to be sure- I don't post the picture (complete with border, filename correct, etc) here? There is another thread specifically for posting finished pieces?
And WIPs- do we post them here, or with our finished pic?

I started doing sketches for this on the subway. I had pretty much nothing in the way of references (though I did skim the Wikipedia article on hookahs), but I think got off to a good start.
I certainly got really into it -- almost missed my stop.
(In case you can't tell, I did some mucking around with the design of the hookah. Not quite sure where I'm going with that yet)
EDIT: Sorry! Anyone who got weirded out by the size.

spaztastic - watch your caterpillar there, it is leaning VERY heavily on the Disney version. Maybe google caterpillars, and use some of the cool examples that come up to try shape experimentation (since Disney's doesn't have very many cool caterpillar features anyway)

So I had a brief fleeting design idea until I went to look it up in the original book to find that it was a Disney alteration to the original story. (Caterpillar changing into butterfly). Dammit.

i see a lot of people are off to a good start. Already enough scary cats to haunt my dreams for quite some time. I'm curious to see what i'll win; are more traditional take (seeing as they are such beloved chracters) or the more "out there" stuff (like decaying lolita's scarily attractive caterpillar ).
Gonna be good!

Sooo... Assuming I can't have multiple entries (although, if one is deemed unacceptable, can the other be submitted? >_>), I'm changing my entry to this. More story/environment/anything going on here, and although I'm not completely satisfied (still working on my Painter skills), it'll do pig, it'll do.
I actually am considering entering the second to last version over the fully colored one- I was pretty proud of my linework, and I feel like the picture got a little boring in the coloring. If that makes sense. :(

I thought people might be interested in these. David Hall was an artist who worked at Disneys in the '30's. He produced these and many others as early concepts for the then proposed 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' Disney intended to make, but didn't till the '50's. His Alice is slightly bizarre with long matchstick legs, but these drawings have a real feel of early Disney style with perhaps a healthy dose of the Fleischers thrown in as well. They were never intended as book illustrations, but I scanned these from my edition of 'Alice' that uses them as such.
BTW, I can scan more in if peeps want to see others. There were lots of colour plates but not so relevant to this challenge.

Hi,
Here's my first sketch (save set up) and i started already with some details. But a lot of changes will be made. And i've got some extra ideas for it. I've also added a quick color fillin for the feeling. So still got a lot of work to do.... like usual ;-)

January 13th, 2009, 06:35 PM
Okay, so I'm kind of a stickler for stupid details. And I noticed that at least three people made the same mistake with the hookah. Namely, leaving off the bit that actually contains the tobacco (or whatever).
So here's the Wikipedia diagram for your convenience.
http://i39.tinypic.com/2rgf4gg.png
Also, it shows how it works, which is kinda cool. (the bowl would contain a live coal on top of the tobacco, so that's where the smoke would come from)

There are some amazing entries so far. Competition will be tough.
For the caterpillar, does it specifically have to be a hookah, or would a similar smoking device like an old-fashioned cigarette/holder be acceptable?
HiloHello
January 13th, 2009, 11:32 PM
Well, I'm not in charge of these things, but the hookah is kind of his signature prop. It'd be like taking away Sherlock Holmes's pipe, or Groucho's cigar.
That, and the mushroom. Caterpillar+hookah+mushroom=The Caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland.

Slither Astray
January 14th, 2009, 04:27 AM
Love the entries! Cool to see so many different approaches to the topic in so many different styles.
I just have to enter this one too even though I really dont have the time for this at all right now ^^ ow well.. I've done worse things!
So.. here's my view. I love the reluctant -leave me alone- attitude of the caterpillar. I made her into a grumpy showgirl who's sick of her high heels and just wants to chill. better not bother her!
The cheshire cat to me is a real bully! He knows everything and instead of helping alice he just toys with her! So.. the cheshire cat is a japanese elemantary school student. She just hiding there, watching alice get in trouble because of her and laughing her ass off. A real bully ^^
Everyone always seems to have an opinion about alice and her character so I decided to give her a break. In my story, she's a good kid. A bit arrogant maybe, but still a good kid.
So here goes!
Felicia
January 14th, 2009, 05:53 AM
Here is mine so far (sketchy one). My concept is an African Wonderland with a serval cheshire cat.
:)Funny coincidence, I had just finished the one below with a more classic Alice and Cheshire Cat and I have been working on a caterpillar one to match (which I am not entering).
Some really cool entries so far!

i think im going to keep this simple and just stick to the traditional from alice as it'll sit well in my portfolio at the moment, though depending on time, i might also go another direction to :) if only we could enter 2 versions :) not sure now which version to finish, think now maybe a more steampunk version,hmm...

That don't matter mate. Though we all play to win, it's more about the practice. Honing skills and all that.
Have a go, the worst that could happen is a dent in your ego (though i find that a dented ego is a bonus, to much self esteem makes you fuck up..).

Slither Astray : Take care of your composition, it's a nice scene but the characters are really a small part of it, and it should be the opposite i think. What we want to focus on looking at the pictures is the character, + remember that in the poll all the pictures are resized, it would be even smaller... :/
Felicia : I love yours so far ! In the more classical one, Alice reminds me of Marc Riden characters, in a sweeter way ! Cool pic! :)

Taking a bit of a cyberpunk spin on Wonderland. With a kind of creepy Cheshire Cat and Caterpillar... Whats wrong My dear? You aren't lost, are you?

However, if I was a character in a cyberpunk setting, and I ran into a small, innocent looking, blond girl, in a pink dress, in the bad part of town, then I would idefinitly be more afraid of the girl than any thug or ganger. ;)

A lot of really sweet stuff going on this in this one. Really digging a lot of these ideas.
Continuing with the whole robotics idea, I went to design first before diving into working on the scene, doing an ortho of the catterpillar. I should probably be working on this a bit faster, but we'll see I guess :P
Decided on having him attached to the mushroom itself, and having the hookah being built into him, as shown by the water jars, smoke ports and hoses.

Atastrophea = Really love the design for the cat, there is something very interesting there regarding the grinning skull.
dirkvandulmen = Looking very good. Might want to consider adjusting the value and brightness of the scene a bit. Right now the black is too commanding, causing the lighting on the cat to go slightly funky. Normally I will check for lighting value by converting my image to gray scale. Hope that helps. But the rest is ace.

Started with the concept in mind as to portray Mr. caterpillar. Drawn it on paper with pencil. Make out lines in photo-shop, I wanted to give focus on his face as well dramatic, so I made rim light quite harsh. put the values down, Alice came after wards I draw it digitally. Then I put the brush on color mode on and off with other blending modes; screen and overlay mostly. I use most of brush on opacity with the selection tool to draw shapes and then adding color in the selection. I made the perspective grid with frontal lines and the with the help of transform scale tool set it on the floor with I have in my mind when I draw Mr. Cater... Then in the end to finalize I did some quick color balance with blue light to get more drama. As the research i googled/wiki-ed around Mr.Caterpillar/caterpillar to get the flow of the character/design(colors-patterns) done previously by other great artists.
[I]Thanks for you time to read it...

Added green for caterpillar's shirt so he will stand out while I blended the cat further into the color of the sky so that only his smile and eyes are clear. Added the smoke to balance out the composition. And finally, I started exploring the settings for the characters, right now I am thinking that they belong in the oil field. Like some kind of king/mafia.

Cool pieces everyone:
dirkvandulmen: I like the design you've gone for. However, I think that the amount of black in the colors is flattening things a bit and...kinda...leaving the illustration a little lifeless. I dunno...the cat almost screams that it's part of this lively world, and the tree does this as well. I think you might want to go back in and paint darker (not black) shadows of the local colors you've chosen.
just my two cents.

I have to agree with Jason, dirkvandulmen - the black shadows make your image contrasty and overall busy and flat, it doesn't do the character justice (he is really cool). Try making shadows with other colors, but also not giving everything the exact same tonal range - things closer to the light have less shadow, things farther from it have less highlight. Bring it back, and get back an area of focus so the viewer isn't lost and overwhelmed.

And here I trot in to be anal...
Alice's Adventures In Wonderland is the title.
DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PURPLE. That's a Disney thing. Was a brown tabby I think.
But whatever. Purple's a cool colour.
Hoping the surrealism will bump up along the way!
But then I do sometimes hallucinate (especially when tired), and since I stopped lucid dreaming too I think I might have developed a more specific view on Alice's Adventures...
So far:
MugenTaichou: I like where you're going with this!
Slash: Much as I tire of all the catgirl hype (where's the love for the other monster girls, huh) and the overly thin female representations here (it's nice, but I like variety), I do like her look. A hint more crazy in the eyes/smile and a trippy background that vaguely resembles a forest or tea party could bring the character out (for me, at least).
Scorge: Looking cool, though personally I'd be really tempted to leave in more hints of innards/skeleton! But I guess that's not in most people's dreams...
Poshspice: Love the second edit, with the sepia look about it. I think you lost something in completing the lines and giving them a more solid feel, but then I'm weird. I do like how the ears/tail of the Cat seem to be trailing off!
Felicia: I like the classic one, but it's great to see a different cultural input too! Really looking forward to the finished piece!
Grenogs: Ooh, robotic, that's different... Like your choice of articulation joints so far, only thing I might pick on is the whiskers, would some sort of wiring go well there? If you do go this way, some cogs might make for a good background! But I guess that's a little more White Rabbit.
Giacobino: Awesome looking caterpillar, really gets the character across!

Haretrinity thanks for the import, very much appretiated. we think alike, i was actually concidering the cog background, but that may get a bit overtop, as im thinking about making the leavs as cogs. also the wire wiskers are a must, though at the moment im not sure yet whether they should be straight wire whiskers or twisted like a spring, i guess im going to experiment and see what works best. Also wait for the little birdies, still quite a bit of work left on this, so the end result could still go anywhere :)

great work happening here, but can i make a suggestion to everyone doing the cheshire cat character, i'm noticing theres some pretty evil looking cats here, but in the story the cats character is described as looking good natured.
"The Cat only grinned when it saw Alice. It looked good- natured, she thought: still it had very long claws and a great many teeth, so she felt that it ought to be treated with respect."
Just thought i should mention it, since it is the actual character thats being described here.

HunterKiller_: Cool direction you took there!
JOHNGRELLO: Really cool as well! Excellent color palette.
Well, this is officially my first chow so I'm excited. Here's where I'm headed with the cheshire cat. I'm going for a kind of deranged, mentally unstable version who is hopefully at least a little unsettling.

Southern: Your caterpillar still looks a bit flat, the cat on the other hand looks amazing with the fur and backlight and all. But I really like the concept of the drugged 'homeboys' so if you'd push it a little bit further you'd have my vote at least :yayca:
Johngrello: Sweet comic style :) Lovin' it

I'm going for some LSD/CGA colors with black. I think it fits Alice. Still very work-in-progress.
Gax: Crazy good shit there! Really like it.
Many more good stuff all around for others too.

bishop six i love it, i realy hope your going to finish yours with some colours, so far your cats grin reminds me of a manic picachoo thats had to much "cough*" coffee, (brilliant) i think some alternative colouring would help to, stay away from natural and realistic , and head more towards psychadelic. :)

Do you post your WIPs along with the finished piece in the Final Burning thread, or is it enough to have posted a couple in this thread?

My WIP. Got my palette, but struggling with form. Haven't concidered texture yet. Made his head up side down, just because it seemed like something he could do.

If you posted them here, please at least link to them in the final burning thread so I can find them easily.

So I'm kind of dufus. I haven't been here in a couple of weeks, and only decided Friday that I would like to participate again. I missed the note about mandatory wips until just now, so all I have are the couple of sketches below. Is that enough to be able to submit or do I need to sit this week out?

That's enough.
We just need some form of progress shots, that's all. :]
Phoenix79: First, these need to go into the Final Burning thread. Second, please please try to use the uploader. We've lost so many awesome chow images in the past from people hosting them outside, so please try to use it. If it's giving you issues, pm me and tell me what you're doing and i'll figure out why it isn't working, or upload them for you.

I'm not going to have time to finish. It's been a busy week, but I'll come back to mine some other time (yeah right)!). An amazing round, with some great work here.

Poshspice - sorry to hear you won't finish that.
Well, I did finish it. Sorta, not really sure how it turned out, so I'll stay out of the finals on this one. Hopefully see you guys in the next round. Maybe I'll feel better.
