so i'm just wondering which really good, FREE, personal websites are out there today....i've seen plenty of great sites from fellow CA artists and i'm wondering if i can make one that's just as professional looking as all of the others.....
i know wikipedia is a free site and i know the structure quite well...but are there any other good sites?
if you know a good one, then it would be really appreciated to promote it...

you get what you pay for. "Free" should not be the first concern in self promotion.

not free, but not expensive either, and specifically for artists.

The ideal choice is to make it yourself. You have total control over what it will be like. I managed to make it my project for a course unrelated to art. So win win situation for me. :)

You can make your own gallery for free here at ca-org. You don't get anything else than a short introduction of yourself and a simple gallery for your pictures, but at least you have all your pictures in one place. Just click gallery at the top of this page!

you could always make a blog type portfolio for free. Check out Blogger (http://blogger.com)or Wordpress (http://www.wordpress.com), you can sign up for one for free and they will host it. They look decent enough and allow for a bit of customisation. Plus you can host images there, recieve comments from viewers if you wish, and upload content from a simple, easy-to-use control panel.
This would be a lot better than say, getting a website built by a free 'pagebuilder' and hosting it on a free site where they stick ads all over the place.
Hope this helps.

Yeah... I think if you're determined to go the free route it's better just to make a blog. Certainly nobody is going to take you seriously with some crappy Geocities (do they even still exist?) or Yahoo page with ads everywhere.

Here some links that offer free wysiwyg builders and they host, if your not technically inclined to diy.

http://www.webs.com/
http://www.synthasite.com/
And of course, Wordpress can host their own, blogger etc. :)

I pay 130 bucks a year for hosting.....not free, but not expensive either.
If you are just intimidated by setting up your own thing I can tell you I am as dumb as they come with technical things and if I can set it up anyone can.
It's all about finding a host (which I am sure many people here can suggest whatever they are using) and then registering your domain name (which often is provided for free by the host depending on where you go).
I used to do the "home.comcast.net/blahblahblah" bullcrap because it was "free" and having my own domain and having it hosted by someone not connected to my ISP has been a godsend.
Please....put your pennies together and just do it up right if you care about your art at all.
(but if you just do not have the means, I also recommend something simple like Blogger)

Blogs are great, but as Dusty mentioned, web hosting is pretty cheap. The hard part is making a good website.

Rather than blogger,wordpress is good.
Make your blog in wordpress, its will be more beneficial.
thanks jimmy, i'm currently making a wordpress blog. and in my opinion it is better than Blogger. i like the control panel better and it's easier to use. i'll have to post the link when i have it up and running fully.
