ROUND #142 :: KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE
DESCRIPTION
Choose one or more of the Knights of the Round Table. If you do more than one, please keep the designs consistent so they work in the same universe!
Please give some visual clues as to which knights you are illustrating - I don't want just random knights, I want designs based off of the particular stories of the characters you are trying to illustrate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_the_Round_Table
Some of the more popular knights in particular:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_arthur
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Galahad
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Lancelot
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Percival
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gawain
Other figures from the Arthurian legends who are knights, but not necessarily knights of the round, I will also allow, as long as you ask about them in particular first. (ie, the Green Knight, King Pellinore, etc.)
------------
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?
--------------------
SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/ChowPics/frame.jpg
:right: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
:right: SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:
Chow##_Nickname
example: "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg"
THE REST IS EASY:
1: No comments before poll is set. They WILL be deleted with utmost malice and petty grumbling. >:{
2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
3: Good luck to all.

I choose Launcelot, becasue I always think Arthur's wife Guinevere loves him instead of Arthur, and only him is willing to die for her so I want to give a rightful place to him, maybe I am wrong but yeap Launcelot is my choice.
I have to rush him at the end becsaue my stupid plan, there are too many things to render end up, luckily I give up the horse idea otherwise I won't even finish haha

I chose to do Dagonet, he was portrayed both as the court's fool and as a skilled warrior who helped save many of the knights. I chose the latter.
He didn't turn out exactly how I wanted him too, I was trying the whole B&W thing for the first time...definately a lot more practice needed. Hope you all like it somewhat!

All the entries are fantastic... its really hard to not vote for them all for one reason or another. So I limited myself to 3.... Humorous, Awe Inspiring and Unique.
Humorous - I voted for Pixeltuner, big shock! I think it will be a habit for me. LOL! Its such a funny, whimsical image!
Awe Inspiring - This was the hardest... but I voted for Venger. That Green night design is awesome and execution is gorgeous!
Unique - Chochette... the style is so cool and different than everything else submitted. I really love it... I think he may need to grace my desktop for a while. :D

It's a tough one, I usually go for 3 but I had to do 4 this time
I went for:-
Matt Dixon: The colour's on this are superb, and support the aged character theme (maybe a touch of winter might of been nice but hey! I like it!)
Vorace: Hell, you had me with the grayscale! (it's reading a little dark though that might be my monitor) My tip for the win!
Clochette: Really nice line work and an excellent face - I love the muted colours.
Kian: Enough of the character to make it a character design (rather than just an illustration) but also good emotion and lighting - I love your brush strokes.
There are a few I didn't vote for, not because they were bad, I had to limit its to 4 votes otherwise it would get silly. In no particular order.
064: It a nice strong character, there's a few issues with the anatomy (the forearm and hand holding the cup and the visible leg) which let it down (JMO). The face and torso are really nice. I'm judging you on the rest of the character that you've drawn.
septomin: You forgot the WIP! D'oh, you'd have got a vote from me!
Love the colour use and energy to this piece.
artina:It's quite classical and there's nothing wrong with that at all. I'm not sure he'd be able to straighten his arm or bend it much with the way the arm armour works as there's no way for the elbow guard to go - picky I know, but it's something to think about. Really nice rendering.
Wiggers: I liked the sketch John, but it looks like it's a little rushed in the end (JMO)
Sorry I'm not doing everyone, but it's a great round.

January 12th, 2009, 08:23 PM
booo i pussed out...
Anyway AWEsome round, i really hope there'll be a tie as only one winner would be unfair! :P
My votes went to Clochette, Kian, Matt Dixon, 064 and Vorace,
i could have voted more but it would have become a lil absurd...
I think i want Vorace for the win though, I love the action in the final image and the wips too.
Good luck to all!

Oh, and kian, I really like yours, but I wish you had given him more of a face. :( Faces are really important in character design and it was a bit of a shame that you kind of flattened him out, in that area.
His pose gave a really good sense of mood, though, so you still got the character across, just thought I would drop a note!

Great job everyone!
I tried not voting for too many, but there are a lot of great pieces this week. I ended up voting for my top 3.
In no particular order, I gotta hand it to Matt Dixon, Vorace and Clochette. I loved all 3 for many different reasons...mainly overall comp/color (dixon)....badassness (vorace)....and just an awesome unique style (clochette)
***
Bummer I didn't make it this week...but I can't say that I'm too surprised. I'm completely dissatisfied with how the B&W ink turned out...my first real stab at it. In my mind I could see it but just couldn't put it down on paper.
Guess I gotta step it up in the future :)

My first Chow, wow such a great bunch of illustrations, now the world has more arthurian illustrations, such great new paintings to add in its catalogs...
I didnt know about the multivote just voted Dixons king Pellinore,
I would have voted Sellis, and kian as well,
Sellis:
the Crown made me think of lord Souron or the nazgul king, however those are my favorite villains their not quite galahad I think its because you made it black metal, because it looks o.k. in the sketch, if not for that yours would
be my favorite.:)
Kian: you totaly conveyed the emotion of torn between love and loyalty in this peice it just jumps out at you from the screen, the brownish blur in the background is a bit confusing, i think a speed painted tree or a castle in the backdrop would have been nice.
Dixin: I read a couple of books on the Arthurian legends, and saw some movies on it, but for some reason I never heard much about King Pelinor, I remember he was in the begining of disneys sword and the stone and he was really skinny in thier depiction, The background of your peice is really great, wonderful all around I cant think of any critiques.

January 13th, 2009, 05:17 AM
064 - Nice job on the face and I'm digging the armour design. Almost got my vote, but I'm afraid the grail arm and hand let you down. A bit of reference to get the foreshortening right on that arm and nail a more natural grip on the cup would have made all the difference. The placement of his legs doesn't feel very natural to me either - looks almost like he's spent too much time astride a horse.
Adam Schumpert - Kudos for doing something different. I was surprised how how many of us went for a fairly straight take on the subject. Too bad you didn't have time to finish up your final as you would have liked.
Pixeltuner - I love the horsey but honestly I'm not sure if his full-on comical expression grabs a bit too much attention from Galahad? I thought he worked just fine on his own. Great style either way. Got my vote.
Venger - My favourite my a mile. I really liked your first sketches for this and it's just got better. Very cool armour design with those leaf motifs and the 'green man' flavour on the breastplate and helm. Great presentation too. Top notch, Des.
Xaya - I really like the mood and Galahad's face is great. Angles look wrong on the sword and scabbard though. Feels to me as though they should angle back more so that they pass behind the shield?
Vorace - Fierce! Had to give this a vote for sheer heavy metal thunder. Cool armour design too. I wonder if you would have got a bit more punch with a slightly brighter background to give that groovy pose a stronger silhouette?
Clochette - Really lovely style.
Kian - Great atmosphere and I love the colours you've chosen. I respectfully disagree with Daestwen regarding the face. Fair point in a strict design context, but concepts come in all shapes and sizes and one can project character in many different ways. The pose and setting in your piece would communicate the character's emotion eloquently even if the face were completely obscured. As it is, enough of the face is defined that we can read his expression clearly and I'm really not sure what you'd score by tightening it further. Got my vote, Jon.
Sellis - Very nice atmosphere in this one and I'm loving that upward angle. Though I keep reading the bright patch just above the mace as the horizon line which is throwing that viewpoint off. Probably just me.
Good round. Sorry I don't have time to leave comments for everyone.

Sellis - Looks really bleak and brutal and very neogothic, its got a sence of fatality and immortality, someones gonna die! I really like the costume, weapondary & armour. Great angle aswell.
Vorace - I preferred the Black & White more (color version seems to highlight the face a light much) but the weight of the character is still intence and threatening. Great balance of proportion with movement, I can imagine the sword blade being swipped through my torsoe in an instant.
I think everyone has done well here, good topic and great turn out.

JessiBean, Poshspice and especially Matt Dixon: thx for voting and the crit. Without sounding too sentimental (or like an acceptance-speech) I can say that all 3 of you have really inspired me 14 months ago to register at CA and pick up drawing and painting again in order to become the best artist I possibly can, so it means a lot that I'm at a point now where you dig my work.

Lovely round.
I voted for:
Matt Dixon - Lovely work sir. Atmospheric and full of character in Pellinore's posture and expression.
Pixeltuner - Great character! As others have said, the horse is perhaps a bit zany, but I love both the personalities. :)
Venger - Smashing image and concept. I like the vignettey bit at the bottom too!
Clochette - I really like the approach you've taken and the face. He's pretty intense!
Kian - The way you are using gesture these days to suggest character is excellent. I think he needs a bigger sword! ;)
Sellis - Personally I really like this image. It's tight and well painted. I get a bit of a 'Tim the Enchanter' vibe from him which is probably what helps!
Honourable mentions to all.

D'oh It was suppose to be snow Aly! - the old "wherever he walk's spring and summer appear", back to the drawing board!

And Daestwen, thanks for the crit :) Matt pretty much summed up why the face on my entry is the way it is.
Yeah, fair enough. Like I said, it still works, so. Just a personal thing. :]

The one that is winning looks like he is riding on a Pony!

I feel a little disappointed with myself in this round. Not in the way of votes, but more with I'm a little confused at where I went wrong. Ah well :)

Pixeltuner - the credit is all yours, I have to say this is the best round I think you've done in the CHOW, and you have grown tremendously. Totally enviable progress, and at this rate, you can accomplish more and more and more.
I'll be watching you closely. :teeth:
Also, Matt Dixon - your color... and your painting technique. Just... WOW. Bravo, well done.

Yup, top notch Matt, you led from the beginning (must be the horse hehehe)
I always enjoy (and I'm envious) of your painterly strokes!
