This looks like an intressting topic. I'll see if I get time over for it, I hope I do.

Thought I would post some info about general cave animal characteristics for those who're intressted :) :

"CAVE ANIMAL"

"Animal that has adapted to life within caves. The chief characteristics of cave animals are reduced or absent eyes and consequently other well-developed sense organs, such as antennae and feelers, and their lack of colour. Most are predators, owing to the lack of vegetable matter in this dark habitat."

"Cave-dwellers include several species of snails found in Austrian caves that have developed blindness as a result of their mode of life and a genus of small cockroaches in caves of the Philippine Islands where the females are blind and flightless. There are numerous species of cavefish including Amblyopsis, which occurs in the Mammoth Cave of Kentucky, USA. Cave-dwelling amphibians include several blind salamanders, such as the olm."

Cave insects:

Cave Fishes:

...and as a small bonus, a blind beetle named after a familiar nazi dictator:

Ok here is my first lot of sketches.

I'm thinking of having a small blind, or almost blind scavenger creature, about the size of a dinner plate.
Ill develop more ideas as i go.

Hi there!

As you already noticed yoitisi will be a helping hand for COW, when i won't have time to care about COW. So there should be less breaks or maybe none with 2 mods for this activity.

Thanx and welcome to yoitisi :)

Now go and draw some creatures, it is the first creature in 2009, better come up with something cool :perv:

Great to see the COW on the move. This will be my first one too. Sweet!

zimfin
January 9th, 2009, 08:08 AM
Well, this seems to be where I am headed. My creature will be large and strong. using claws along its body for grip as well as powerful suckers on its fingers, it will hang upside down and lower its tongue. the end of its tongue will be luminescent to attract prey. Being mostly blind, it has sensitive feelers around the mouth and large, rotatable ears to help in detecting and catching food.

xabian
January 9th, 2009, 08:54 AM
Ok here's my idea so far, the orange lump on its back basically has tissue which lights up when blood is pumped through it, this allows the creature to switch it on and off like a dimmer switch on a light, it will switch it down to a very small glow just enough for it to see when hunting. Its main source of food are bats found in the cave, its long neck allows it to literally scoop them off the cave roof. I'm not completely sold on this design yet, it still does have some Flores like its its bulk, and if i make it smaller its necks still gotta reach the roof, and this will make it loose quite allot of stability, any suggestions i would be very grateful of thanks =] (also has a lack of legs due to this reason)

zimfin
January 9th, 2009, 10:29 AM
Okay, started working on the colours a bit now. Still details about the creature which could change as I work. I think more than the tongue tip will glow to attract prey, probably the feelers. Since it lives in caves from an alien environment its body will resemble the green stone in texture and quality though it will be quite pale.

Hey xabian, i'm not to sure about your decision to stay legless, it would be near impossible to try and make your way over the rocky crags without legs.
If you havent noticed snakes don't tend to live in caves...

Also the decision to go large isn't that practical either, as there isn't enough food in caves so sustain a creature as large as what you two have started to design.

Dont let my thoughts impede you but its what i think on the matter.

yh, i do believe your right, like it lives off bats, but i just dont know if it would be enough to sustain something its size, but on that note dragons manage to survive on knight in shining armor =P well im going to put this guy to side and have a play with some over ideas

Hey, so this is my first time trying out CoW. Hopefully I get this right... Anyway, my little guy's a cat-sized mammal that uses it's long wiskers and overdeveloped senses of smell and hearing to track bats and insects. It has fleshy pads on the tips of it's fingers and toes and a prehensile tail to help it navigate a climb-intensive environment.

I'm probably gonna make his ears a lot bigger and I might change his teeth.

Erignoscious Flamertera - Perminion Flightless Bat

The largest of the Erignotids (wrongly called the Flightless Bat), this creature is not related to the Chiroptera order at all. Evolving in isolated cave systems in Southern Brazil, these rare and dangerous animals were only discovered in the late 1950's by the late Prof. Steven Jameson and his world renowned team. The Flamertera has vestigal wings but spends its entire life on the floor of the large cave systems it inhabits. It uses the luminous fungi found in that region to lure small mammals and reptiles to within a few meters then strikes with lightning speed and agility. Although the creature is less than 1.2 meters in length it has a fearsome reputation and will guard it's Cave area against all intruders. It has no natural enemies and carries numerous diseases including rabies, a rare type of necrosis and saliva that has the ability to paralize most large mammals in seconds. It was a bite from a Flamertera that left Prof. James wheel chair bound for the last 10 years of his life.

Can I draw the 'species' in the Beowulf film? The 'monster' mother. *drools*

joking...

I will try and enter in my free time.

Bugs, bats, or fish I suppose. Maybe also reptiles, such as: lizards (both small and draconian), snakes, etc... and don't forget insects and arachnids!

Some room to work in my opinion. As long as you remember that these creates need less seeing and more feeling/smelling, it should be pretty open.

Mohog: Thanks for the kind comment.

I use a very simple technique for this type of sketch. I Draw the shapes with a 5H pencil, get to a shape/outline that fits my ideas. Firm up some of the key lines and add some basic shading with a 2 or 3H Pencil. I then finish off with a very sharp HB. I then scan it in at a high res (about 4000 pixels on a dimension). Depending on the image and the time I have I just desaturate the sketch then hit auto levels. If I have more time or I need to be more exat I use levels. If the image is too dark I fade it back a little until I achieve the desired look. I sometimes clean the sketch up using dodge set to shadows. I use liquify a great deal to correct proportions and I regulary flip an image on the X axis ...ooops..I mean horizontally (damn that modeling gene!).

I add a layer set to multiply over the top and fill it with a solid color or a gradient and then set to work adding lighter and light shades. I often do it in greyscale and add color washes later. When I'm fairly happy with the overall color or values I very often flatten the image and start adding light effects, rims lights, specular highlights, blurred effects etc. on a new layer. The whole process is very quick and simple and is great for COWS and DSGs.

Your bone-head creature is looking fearsome. Let's see the full creature.

Sturnus: A great looking amphibian. I love the big fin and the glass like effect.

Loztvampir3 A strong design to start off. the head looks powerful and will look great rendered out fully.

Lordregenshirm A mole rat slugapillar. A true cave dweller if there ever was one. I like the monotone starting sketch.

Hopsy A great start. I like the Dragon more than the bug.

Scourge A great concept as ever. I like the idea of the green light effect. It reminds me of the Cave (film) and the anemic creatures that were in it. Nice crisp image already.

Some great concepts appearing once again.

NAKED CAVE SLOTH

This is my first C.O.W. that I'm actually putting in, though I've participated in sketching a bunch, I never seem to have the hours to really put into painting it on the computer at home due to family and work. So, I'm trying a different approach, using colored pencils to do the majority of the coloring then fixing and enhancing the work on the computer.

Wow, some of these images are amazing now!!

Thanks for the advice scorge! I did enlarge the feet but only a little, as when you last saw it, the creature looked a lot heavier than now. Remember he has claws all along his body to grip with too!

Well, I have made some progress and now have a name for my creature plus more of a story about it.

The "Translucere Lacertus Bestia", (Translucent Lizard Beast) found in the Colony World Caves seems to have the ability to absorb light as an extra form of nourishment. It can not survive outside in full light though as this has a damaging effect on its cell structure leading eventually to death. It can mostly be found near enough to a cave entrance to absorb light whilst still been able to use its lure (glowing tongue tip) to attract prey. If the poison in its saliva does not suffice, it has a hardened, spiked tail which it can use to devastating effect. These creatures will attack any animal, large or small including humans especially during their mating season.
They are partially blind and so rely on their superb hearing and sensitivity to vibration particularly through the feelers around their mouths.

Southern: I am really liking everything you bring the table on this COW run man. The concept and description are wicked no doubt. I could really see this creature of yours in a movie. Nasty 3 foot pitbull rat...

Scourge: I am liking your entry as well. Kinda reminds me of the Satyr from Pan's Labyrinth.

MJ: I am on the same boat as you strapped for time. I guess it's better to be busy especially if we are making money. I know if I won the lotto I'd most likely just marinate on Concept art on a daily, preferably on the beach with hot chicks around me, absorbing some sun rays and sippin pina coladas. I figure I'd drop a few lines to break away from my work and algebra studies. I look forward to seeing you do your thing on here again, I am looking to return soon as well...

B Hanicart: Tight concept and good black and white rendering man. I am going to have to have a peek at the burning thread...

Zimfin: Looking good with all the green glowing elements but over all a bit too much black in the image to satisfy me visually.

Einen: Whoooooooaaahhhh! Psychedelic dude!!! Something implies to me that you've been eating extra mushrooms on your pizza lately,lol...

Mmm, some very nice creatures coming along here...

not sure if I'll get this done but hey.
(not sure about my concept, either, but there you go.)

The creature hunts bats; creates very low sounds with specialised organs on its back which it uses to create sonar images, having a highly intricate bone structure to pick up the returning sounds (similar to owls' ear structures)... When it hears a bat close enough it launches itself upwards with powerful front legs + hits the bat with the specialised 'club' of bone on the front of its head. A combination of long teeth and a dislocatable jaw ensures it catches the stunned bat as it falls from the air.
Eyes are completely nonexistent.

EDIT: Well, got into this one, so it's pretty much done now (I'll put it up in the finals thread in a minute. Here's another in-progress shot, anyway.

Also, the things that made me decide to do it...

WIP 2

The following COW is based in the world of Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson (http://www.brandonsanderson.com). The creature concept is entirely my own, but the environment is taken from his work.

Cylindraspis Atiumae

Commonly known as Pit Sloths, these rare solitary creatures inhabit the Pits of Hathsin, an expansive chain of fissures leading down to unknown depths, found in the northern part of the Central Dominance. Though apt climbers, they use there "tongues" (actually a modified section of intestinal tract which they invert upon regurgitation) to probe the endless cliff faces in search of sustenance, primarily the extremely hard-armored variety of insects indigenous to the pits. The creatures are known to enjoy the delicacy of the equally rare Atium crystals found there. The growing scarcity of these crystals, due to the mining of the geodes they produce, by skaa criminals sentenced to the pits and has lead to the increasing propensity of sloths to feed on the rotting corpses of said skaa who inevitably therein die. It is for this feeding habit that the skaa imprisoned at the pits have come to call them the Hathsin Undertakers.

zimfin i actually like the transluscent quality your creature has in the darker image. I think if you developed the skeletal structure we're starting to see there you could capitalize on that, and that if you lightened the cave wall on the left of the image it would help reduce some of that "darkness."
natedogler great sketches
Bralt Hannicart very cool. what's your technique for the background?
southern very nice. thanks for that mini tutorial there. It's helped me a lot with this one.

My hardrive is about to explode and I was very lucky to get this one into the finals thread. Thanks to everyone for the comments and Einen, you have gone and torn this one up. Spectacular job. Does look a little flat, possibly too much competition between the body and the face, but beautiful luminescence and color choices expressed. Great job.
Lege1: Been meaning to see that movie for some time now. How's your stuff coming along these days? Been watching you progress for some time now and can't help but feel that you'll be besting most of us soon.
Great job to you all. See you in the finals. And special thanks to Yoitisi for taking up the Foz's slack.
Glad you're alright Fozzy! Was worried for a minute.

Wow all of these pieces are looking really well developed.

Einen Nice use of specular highlights. They really 'flesh out' the creature and give it a glossy texture. The psychedelic mushrooms are awesomely rendered as well.

Mr Jack Love the perspective, it's very engaging. Nice textures too. The texture of the creature is duplicated in the background which creates some nice unity.

Zimfin Very audacious concept. But alot of those small details aren't quite necessary as they all compete for compositional space. Try and concentrate your major details to one area next time. The green lights looks very cool though.

No point in posting this in the finals thread; but I did put some time into it, so I will post it here.
