Some really good stuff here, especially what I assume is a self-portrait, which is excellent. Though parts on the Digital is a bit blurry, and lacking in sharpness, abit of twiddling around with the colour and brush strokes would help.
Whilst the pencil drawings are really impressive.

Ayem - Thanks very much, just looked through your sketchbook. happiest place ever :D will comment soon.
Warforce17 - ty v. much, yeah the right char is better, but the left one does actually look like that in game u know :S odd
Late Christmas present for my brother, might put it on a T-shirt and send it to him at uni without him knowing, tee-hee (me and him used to skate and laugh about how unrealistic tony hawk's pro skater was, and imagine a game where everything was like in real life, playing for 40 hours before learning to kickflip and such :P).
or perhaps on a poster with lots of other frames of of a player trying to get better on this ridiculously realistic game. what do you think?
It's a wip obv.

i love your sense of humor, especially in the pro skater piece above. the guy with the brown coat in the outsider fanart piece is out of proportion though. unless your trying to go for an idealized hero, his head is simply too small and it looks silly especially with such a big trenchcoat.
keep up the hard wrok

Blurb.
As legend tells, many years ago, in the depths of the arctic, a group of tribesmen arrived on a quest from the Gods, with the
Lord of all Gods, Shika the Sun God, melting the snow and clearing the sky everywhere they went. Eventually the Gods led them
into the eye of a storm, here the Gods told them that this was to be a sacred spot, and to build a temple of the gods. one that
lay beneath the earth and streched for miles around, then they would be granted sanctuary from all of natures cruel laws,
hunger, pain, even death. They were overjoyed, but what they did not know, was that the Gods planned to destroy them when they
finished. The men worked fast, they had the strength Shika in them, but still it took over 200 years to complete the
temple, and outside they erected an effigy of the sun God and his four Guardian beasts. When they had finished, the Sun God, in
all his power, did not have the heart to kill the men, unlike the other Gods, he had watched the men every second they worked
for 200 years, and by sharing all his power with them for so long, he gained something in return, a soul. The other Gods
overthrew Shika and set out to kill the men before he could reach them. Shika did not retaliate, but when they reached the
oasis, the men were gone, along with the statue of the Sun god and his four beast guardians, They apparently ceased to exist.

A WIP (For my Bristol interview task) that I hope to have finished tomorrow
It's a painting of me painting a painting of lots of painters painting a painting of my three main influences (which is the task topic)
I chose other people, as in, friends, artists and family, computer games, and Music, and each third portrays a different one. Then afterwards i'll cut in into 3 boards.

easy mate. ive said it before but ur a wizard with colour. a natural. ur paintings are just lovely. ull have to show me a few tips if u come to the meet.
i think ur recent sketches rely a bit on heavy, clean contours, especially on the silhouette, which flattens em. the paintings dont have any lines, and let ur ability to convey form really show through. the symmetrical sketch with the foreshortened helmet guy looks like your best pencil work - just beautiful tone and perspective. one thing im noticing is a lack of life drawing and portraits (again..we're backwards).
youve also got a wicked sense of humour. really makes all the difference when your flicking thru someones sketchbook. the tomb raider environ has made me feel inadequate. the perspective, the colours....cant believe its ur first environment. for now all ive got to say is, keep up the good work and do some life drawing

yo dude, thanks a ton for those crits, all of them were spot on, you obviously have a much better understanding of light than I do, i'm never consistent enough.
i was really impressed by your work in bristol and its great to see even more of it. the update on the inspiration piece is awesome, particularly the way in which you can conceptualize how the shadows will look.
hope you had a good time in london, sorry i couldn't make it, I wasn't able to find a place to stay for the night. how'd it go with the interviewers btw? did you sort out that stuff with the animation people? we should be hearing back soon!

sorry to hear about your interview dude, re-apply route b? I tihnk most got it that way.
Looking over your sketchbook again, your main weakness is just your plain trad drawing skills. Especially the faces in the post before last, their very clean and graphic but your missing your edges and placement alot of the time.. Your noses in particular. Your digital is going awesome obviously, maybe show some variety and experimentation with some traditional medias next time round?

March 6th, 2009, 08:59 PM
Cool stuff, mate. I'm rather puzzled as to why you didn't get into UWE, because although I have zero knowledge of the university, the course, the staff, or the kind of people who study there, your work as it is now is superior to the work of quite a number of graduating students that I've seen online.
That's not meant to disrespect current/former students, just that you clearly have the skills, in my opinion, to study there with what you're putting out now.
Maybe your personality just didn't fit. I say that, also, with no insider knowledge of UWE, but just having experienced Uni life in general myself already...twice. The sort of work I've seen from UWE students (and it's by no means anywhere near a lot of them, merely those who have an online presence) you seem to be less traditional and more digital. Maybe they don't like that as much?
As I say, I don't know, but I wish you luck wherever you do end up.

March 13th, 2009, 05:36 AM
hey man! thanks for the huge overhaul on my painting. I regret that you gave it too me after I had finished it to where I was satisfied just the link never showed up so you never got to see it. well it's up now.
This piece is awesomeness! (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=560705&d=1231544749) so great. I totally envy your imagination ;) haha press start in 17 hours to try again lol
You have slick rendering skills and a great sense of form. why all the unfinished portraits though? finish some and think about the proportions and perspective of the facial features too. I think maybe you're just going straight into the feature without planning the structure of the skull which causes the portraits to flatten out/lose depth.
keep em comin, cheers

Nice sketchbook Rob!T!! Shame to hear about Bristol. Nice studies and very nice digitals. That influence / inspire piece is great!!! However I am inclined to second Smarty and pennington regarding traditional technique andfeature placement. Regarding traditional, I think your shading seems fine but your line is kinda letting you down, maybe that could be solved with a dose of blind contour drawing, regarding feature placement, it's just a matter of getting back to the basics of head construction, maybe check out Ron Lemen's head tutorial http://www.anticz.com/heads.htm , or Loomis' "Drawing the head and the hands".
All that aside, you have a great sketchbook here! Keep up the good work!!
