Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Welcome
Kfeeras
January 8th, 2009, 05:08 AM
a good trick for not getting so exhausted after hours is to work at 2,3 pieces at the same time, like one hour on one piece, then moving to the next one, and so one, this way you keep a fresh eye and you dont do the same thing for many hrs.
The painting is from posemaniacs right? Came out really well, maybe add a little detail to the feet. Good work! And keep it UP!

Your latest study turned out really good.
I'd recommend you to try to work with larger brushsizes, though. Make your strokes more efficient. The less detail the bigger the brush, the more detail the smaller the brush. Hope that helps

tugelbend - thanks for ur kind word... I do use big brush as well as small brush,,, what I lack is getting the stroke right on the first try
kfeeras - The ref I used is from characterdesigns.com. They have very, very nice photoset of poses. I just visit posemaniacs for the 1st time, it's pretty cool, and looks useful. Since it's 3d model, it's not totally accurate. Just watch out for those weird bending, especially with the females. Thanks for the comment.
new stuff, some ancient worrior wip

The study in your first post looks pretty tight.
As for the new one, I can't help but think the arms are a little beefy in relation to the rest of his body

Define more details. I want to carry some attitude in him, but it doesn's seem like the pose shows much. I change it a bit to give some more attitude. I like this much better.
this is it for today, continue on later

The slight change of the pose makes his character more evident for sure. Really dig the design so far.
2buiart
January 10th, 2009, 04:18 AM
alicelefay = thank u, there'll b alot more wip as this book grows.
Meissner = yup yup, I dig this pose much better than the other. The other one looks very stagnet, and kinda boring. Thank u for sharing thought.
I will continue it later on. As for now, more studies!!!
Choose a very loud ref to study off, the hardcore screamingd. Add some loud stroke to add dramatic.

The female,, I tried to go as fast as possible, and it all adds to 50 mins... lkaflas

Ah now I see. At first I thought you'd handle your brush more like a pencil but now I see that this is caused by the brush you use. Durr, stupid me
Anyway, I really like the head study. Turned out great.

I love the head, the use of that brush is perfect! :D

Ancient worrior continue.
Had the hardest time with his left arm hand. I had to walk back and forth to my mirror 20 thousands time, and re-drawn it a dozen time....and still cant get it look right. urrggg....sigh.......
Dont really like how it turn out, it looks too tight. I would like it better if it's a lil more loose.
Spend much more time on it than I suppose to. About 10 hours total.
Well, that's it for now. Called it done, gonna move on to the next one. (unless a someone call something out that would make the painting better, =)

Is Bui part of your name, by chance? I know a guy named Tong Bui, and your work kinda' reminds me of some of his.

Nice sb so far.
Keep it up, your on the right track.

January 11th, 2009, 11:54 PM
Good job on the duder, my only crit would be the fuzzyness of some of the parts where detail should be. The arm facing the viewer could be a little tighter in the hand and elbow. Seems you arent 100% sure what is happening so you arent rendering it fully.
Then for the studies, why rush? Rather do a good 1h study of the figure with details and such instead of 5 x 20min speedies where you just gloss over the bits!
Keep up the good work!
biomanz
January 12th, 2009, 12:26 AM
I think the prob with the left arm is the way the bicep looks - it seems a bit too short and so the whole arm is dislocated a bit from the shoulder. Still, it looks good.
Maybe try smoothing things down, not everything of course, to remove the brush lines a bit.
2buiart
January 12th, 2009, 03:26 AM
Meissner= man, thanks for continually stopping my sb,,,
My last name is Bui alright... first name is Tu, pronounce Two, that's why it's 2buiart
muzzoid - as long as i keep practicing, Im on the right track.. thanks for swinging by
kidult - Your sb has some really nice studies, i dig. As for the duder = agree, that arm is a lil fuzzy when I take a look at it again. I might go back into later on.
I usually try to be flexible with my studies, sometime I would spend hours on one study just because I want to know why does it look like the way it looks. Sometime I would try to go really quick to practice my speed.
biomanz - The bicep part is foreshortening,,, it looks a bit off cuz I didnt render it corectly. I think the shadow of it looks a lil too dark compare to the overall shadow where the skins shows.
Last study before I head out for night. this One is inspired by one of the critique specialist in this forum = Blue.
He is such a kind guy for helping bunch of other artist work. He suggested me to do something different =
"You already have examples of the muscle structure for a human arm, try and add an extra join to that arm. This exercise prevents you from being a copy machine and gets you thinking about how/why those muscle groups are there and what they do together. You can make the extra join bend anyway you want, just make it work with all of the muscles / tendons / bones."
This study was a harder than I thought. I thought = alright, I'm just gonna do this straight out of my head cuz I know anatomy pretty well already. WRONG
The moment I tried to add muscles to the 3rd joint, it looks like wobble fats. haha FUk,,,, then i had to look at myself in the mirror along with my anatomy book to nail it down.
It was a very interesting subject to study.
biomanz
January 12th, 2009, 05:46 PM
Yeah I see there is foreshortening on that bicep, but where the pec meets the bicep is where it looks to be too far out. The darkness of it shouldnt be the problem.
Interesting suggestion that Blue suggested. I'm gonna try it as well.
Jovian M
January 12th, 2009, 07:28 PM
Interesting exercise. I'll have to try something like that out.
2buiart
January 15th, 2009, 01:46 AM
biomanz - Let me see it when u are finish with it
Meissner - same to u
On these 2, I went completely nuts with brush stroke, splashing random strokes all over place. Then when I see something interesting, I defines it out. For fun.

new concept - Gate Keeper wip
and how it looks like when it chase an intruder
alicelefay
January 15th, 2009, 08:03 AM
ahhh I love post #22!
It's interesting to see what can emerge from the brush strokes! funny!
Jovian M
January 15th, 2009, 12:03 PM
For sure. Those concepts in post #22 are sick, man.
The chasing pose thing for the gate keeper looks a bit stocky. It looks like you'd have it move similar to a Gorilla; maybe study their movements a little more? Idk. Pretty cool, though.
2buiart
January 16th, 2009, 03:43 AM
alicelefay and Meissner- Thanks for ur motivation.......I went ahead and continue on with the random brush sketch.
During the process, I had LOUD trance music on. I try to not move my hand off the cintiq and just keep on adding stroke and minus stroke. It was fun!. I stop every once in while to see if everything is not too off. I felt like I was lost into the painting.
For the gatekeeper running, yeah, ref would help alright.

Daaaaaaamn, dude, that came out sick. Looks like it would make a badass boss monster at the end of some video game.
How's working on a CINTIQ for ya'?
2buiart
January 19th, 2009, 12:45 AM
alicelefay- u should try electronic music while you paint or draw.. it's fun.
aaron death - Thanks for ur kind words
Meissner - The cintiq is fukking awesome. I love it. It feels more like traditional than the tablet cuz I can paint straight onto the painting. I can hit my stroke much more accurate than the tablet. Once I got on the cintiq, I dont ever want to go back to the tablet.

a hell character concept that I started couple weeks ago, but left off. Came back to it a moment ago, saw couple things I didnt like, change it here and there.
This character is influenced by Nirasawa, Yasushi's character creation. He's a genius, I love his creation.

the last creature from the last soo great dude, really interesting color scheme!!
yea i actually meant characterdesigns.com.. not posemaniacs ;-)
The weird arms.. on the first look i thought they are regular arms, then i went like "..wait a minute.."!! Really cool idea, I might try this too...
The site http://www.terragalleria.com/ is really awesome for reference images. The pics are small, but great for color studies/inspiration.
cheers!

Maybe it's just me, but that gatekeeper WIP looks frikkin' scary. I like the last concept as well.
I tried drawing an arm and leg with multiple joints from memory, not drawing out each specific muscle, and...I got a headache afterwards...
2buiart
January 21st, 2009, 02:15 AM
areve - thanks mate
Meissner - I define the arm out a bit later. I use the 20 inch widescreen cintiq. It's not mine, it belongs to my studio (I wish I owe one!). I use it after work hours, which is around 8pm weekdays. I draw or study art until 1am then go home..... so far this year. Weekends is my time with games, family, Jesus, and friends
Kfeeras - Let me know how ur arm thingy goes. It was a really interesting studies for me. Thank you for your kind words and the ref hook up, CHEERS!!
biomanz "I tried drawing an arm and leg with multiple joints from memory, not drawing out each specific muscle, and...I got a headache afterwards..." LOL.... It's tough to add another joint heh? It's a very different interesting excercise. Ur comment is appreciated.
Ancient Warrior continue.....
Made some changes to his clothes, corerct the anatomy issues etc etc... pose the before and after side by side for comparision

Interesting and impressive. I have a lot to learn from how you draw.
I was looking at your last post and I really like the blue highlight and the shadow work. It's fun also to see how you give personality to your character with the smile and position of the head. He seem to be a friendly warrior.
I tried but I cannot say nothing wrong about him, so I just hope that you will crank up that guy and make his left thumb more evident. Anyways at the level of quality that you are creating him I can expect only the best.
Cheers

Meissner - There's a few concept out there that I know has similarity to the one that u like.
Do you know a Japanese veteran artist name Nirasawa?
He has a sick mind, his monster creations are genius. I have his stuff uploaded to megaupload, it's a big download, 200 megs, but it's all worth it. Take a look
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3FKI26JW
Most of those are made in the 80s, u will see how his creation has influence today's concept artist.

That Nirasawa art is awsome, must check out more! To your art, I love what you did on post 22, and where your going with those brush stroke influenced charachter designs. It is very interesting. Big improvements on your warrior charachter, i love the mood and personality of him, i would even like to see that sword even more bigger and more designs(just opinion) My only suggestion to your brushwork is to follow forms more, maybe. For example on a torso, wrap the brushstrokes around the forms, as if it were three dimensional and you were sculpting clay. It might give it more dimension. (opinion again) Otherwise, love it!, and keep it up.

on ur drawing called "abandon hospital" the soldiers are in the wrong stance for the way that they are holding the hand guns, its looks like they are left handed so there left foot should be in front not the right foot.
i know that the game has been out for a while and i know thats an old post but i still thought it should be mentioned.
but your art work is really good.
Jovian M
February 27th, 2009, 10:50 AM
I don't think an hour is bad. It looks pretty good, albeit monochrome. Throwing in a few warm colors somewhere (maybe near the focal) could help, perhaps.
The portraits is looking sick, but the eyes are a bit flat.
The changes on the webpage layouts look nice, namely removing all of the contrast from the whip looking thing on the left of the bottom one.

The WIP character is going well. I would say hes not feeling quite balanced...try taking HIS left foot and extending it further into the image. If you look only from the waist down it feels to be on a different perspective plane.
I think if you added something like a red to areas it would pop more instead of only 2 tone compliments. give it a try :)

About the brushes - best to do is by making your own custom brush (of course, most people are too lazy to) by making your own, u will know how to fully take advantage of it.
If you want to know how to make them, there are tons of tutorial on the net that show u how. Youtube.com = search = How Custom Brushes Photoshop
One of the best is probably David Levy DVD tutorials - http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/store/product/85/
It is totally worth it to get his DVD, it's one of the best speed painting tutorial out there that includes the how to custom brushes

awesome stuff, i am also doing alot from zhanglu's & jason's lectures. I think you are making the noses bit small. the distance b/w nostrils are much less which i think should be.
I did some adjustment in your last post. the angle of the lips seems off with relation the angle of face. and the cheek bone seems bulky and longed. do flip your image vertically and horizontally to feel sudden changes. angle of eye is bit flat it will be slightly rotated.
I liked you concept for DW.
b/w your sketch book is very entertaining, enjoying a lot will post more after i have gone through your book.

Thanks guys =)
Some more portraits, just wanna get better at face. Spend quite bit of time on this 2 to get them look accurate, around 5-6 hrs total.
For some reason, I recently dig the wash out look to portraits,,, 2 versions. Which do u like better?

these are nicely done. One thought; I think introducing some hard egde's in the ears will not look face as a miniature shot.
Very nice.

Sony - For some reason, I like the blurry look of area that I want out of focus.
Zou- They are studies from photo,,,, some are my friend, and other are from random website. The last one is from "Facial Reflectance Field Demo". It's a really useful face lighting program.
"This demo allows you to virtually relight real faces. You can light the subject as if they were in a variety of real lighting environments captured from around the world, or position and adjust your own virtual lights to achieve whatever effect you desire."
go to here to download the program for free - http://www.debevec.org/FaceDemo/

I think the washed out look kinda ruins the value scale, but maybe play with it a little more? Idk.

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook.
I can see that there is some Zhanglu influence in your studies. (He is quite the inspiration.) In your recent portraits, I've noticed there are many soft edges being used. I would recommend to experiment with the hardness (e.g. increase the percentage) of your brush in order to bring a stronger clarity to your subject.
Keep the studies up! Look forward to more.

Hey 2bui,great art ,great portraits, and your progression is stunning too, keep working and studying.I wanna try helping too so one advice I would want to give is to spice up the value borders(shadow, light),just to make it more crips and working on hard and soft edges too but i guess i'm just over-reacting.Besides that, you're improving beautifully :).Cheers man!

Thanks mate,,, I'm just trying different render style with portraits, soften on area I want people to not pay attention to and detail the area of focus.
Been a while since the last concept piece. Here's a new one.
Ancient warrior
And my church friend portraits

That new warrior piece is sick. His right arm may be a little long, though. And his left foot looks bigger than his right. Looks like you kinda' recycled the last pose, too. But I still dig it. The portraits of your friends look nice. :D

Gah that warrior is awesome...you almost I would say have a little bit of Hurricane influence in there. I like that touch of blue. I did notice that foot meissner is talking about though.

Meissner - I didnt recycle that pose, I pretty much repainted that ancient warrior cuz I didnt like it much. His right arm and his foot is a bit off, good pointing mate

That'd be sweet. Send me a PM or something.
Looks like the face was a bit of a rush-job. The planes are a little wonky. The figure looks nice, though.
Reading Naruto on fridays is a guilty pleasure of mine.
