I'm new as well and I'm not very good so I don't know if my critiques would be very professional but I believe you wanted critiques and so I will try my best. I don't use traditional media so I really like how you're able to get that kind of shading with them (speaking about the first picture obviously). Though I don't think the leg would be that far from the person. I could be wrong and that could be the correct distance away but I've heard that part of being an artist is twisting things even away from reality to please the audience and conform to their sense of reality, something like that.

It's also nice to see that you work on backgrounds, even dedicating pieces to just scenery. I rarely do backgrounds and it shows when I do muster one out.

The second piece is nice in that you've taken out the lines and so it looks a bit more realistic. The male's left arm, I believe is a bit short. If it's sticking straight out then the elbow should be further down the arm. I'm not sure about this but my elbow comes right around my belly button and imagining the man standing up, his stomach would be a bit close to his head. I'm also comparing his left arm to the woman with the lovely shading. Of course, if he's bending his arm then it might be different but from what I see, I just thought it went straight out.

The background of the second picture is also nice in details. I don't know how long it must have taken you but I wouldn't be able to go through something like that. Still in the end, it made for a nice effect.

I hope you found my comments helpful even though they're not professional. Keep up the good work!

thanks for your comments odd1out, all comments are welcom even if i dont agree with them :P

im afrade that i cheated in that ferst picture as im using coral painter X and not traditional media, but im glad that it at least looks like i did. i agree with you its hard to diside on leg placement on that pic, as it all depends on what the hips and trunk are up to. the idea was that she has just flung her leg over the wall in an atempt to get back over, so i think the leg should be streched out, expesherly if she is strugerling, wich she ment to be. but yes it does look wrong, perhaps i should change the position of the sholders and trunk to solve that.

i never used to do back grounds much till my frend complaind that they were always lacking and he keeped moning till i did them, but i realy injoy them now.

for the 2nd pic. i think the arm looks short becouse i was trying to make him look stocky. with some inpromptue meshoring i think that both of the peaple have arms about the same length so i think its a perseption thing and im not to shore how to solve that as i still want the stocky arm look.

that sky realy didnt take that long about 10 minits work or less befor i was just messing with it for no good reason. ill explane it when i get home from work if your interested.

dont put your self down your comments were honist, clear and helpfull, you cant ask much more then that. :)

one thing i would strongly suggest is to try to get away from the anime eyes. it would be nice to see a study of SOMETHING from life. years ago i got stuck in that style of drawing as well.. and there's nothing wrong with it, but i guarantee you'll have so much more growth in your ability when you do some studies of real life things, individual facial features, simple objects to study how light affects them.. just a thought.. keep with it :)

thanks i know my stile with faces in particular is very narrow, and that i need to do more varied work to improve. i have started trying to do more observation work and the girl in the swimsuit is taken from some magazine tho i made up the bad background my self lol. but thats easy to see as the water serfice is not where it should be.

ill do my best to do some more face sketches from pictures and stuff.

Kind of cool to see some form in this sketch. I've looked through your sketchbook and I think you need more anatomy studies. You don't quite render the muscles properly, just a line that doesn't look very convincing. ;]

madcatuk
January 10th, 2009, 11:06 AM
yes you are right i do need to do a lot more work on muscles.
problem is that i mostly do my random sketching when i can grab some free time and thats usually when i have no access to any reference materiel apart from my own leg or hand and man is that uncomfortable. damn life getting in the way of things again :(

Great you started your sketchbook in CA.
You made me laugh very hard:
3. Picture : Person was beaten very hard
4. Picture : Person looks like he was beaten (Facial expression :D)

The picture with the bride is the best. ^^ But everytime I see 3 and 4 I have to laugh. Its just to funny.

I would recommend to draw from life if you want to get your pictures more realistic. Keep up your work.
I am looking forward to it.

I've been gone only for a couple of days and it seems you've been doing a lot of work. Though since they're old art, I don't think my critique will help since you might already know a little of what I was going to say.

I was wondering did you design the armor in the second picture of your second upload? If you did, I think that really cool.

I read that you sketch in your free time and those are times when you don't have references. I understand, though most people here on CA probably make free time to sketch, maybe with references or without, so they probably won't accept that excuse and would like it if you made more free time for yourself to sketch.

You also said that you used a reference for the swimsuit girl? You did well on that one. Maybe one piece of reference is to just carry around a magazine. I'm sure there's lots of visuals to find in there and it'll also be a good read. Keep it up. Can't wait to see more recent work from you. =)

I like the city evening images, like the latest one and the one with the girl looking out the window. You could develop that one further with more attention to perspective and added detail.

dahami i am glad you liked the city pics i know the perspective still needs a lot of work with them, i have a bad habit of not rely planing then out, im going to have to fix that some time :(

girl looking out the window pic i was thinking of redoing that one again but i think i may just restart with a more interesting angle with something more focal happening in the middle of the pic.
