December 3rd, 2003, 07:33 AM
i thought about this subject for a long time..
then i realised that i can't draw musclppl...
hmm how was i gonna solv this then? ahaa!! i made up this character.. Billy, he comes out whenever i can't really decide what to do, and so i told him, draw a muscleman..
http://vimmzy.dynu.com/images/muscleman.gif
seems my friend billy can't draw them either.. :bash:
i know. very lame, but really i didn't want one of them "i just won the unkownvilles 2:nd annual bodybuilding" pose.. you know the one where the teeth are all shiny and the hair is all shiny (if there is any left after all the steroids that is) etc...
Shinobi
December 3rd, 2003, 08:23 AM
Allright, first post, been a voyager for a long time. Time to actually contribute with something.
davi: nice, love the neck. :)
Vimmzy: hehe, honesty lasts longest. The hand is very nice.
http://Vimmzy.dynu.com/shinobi/DSG279_ExtremeMuscles.jpg
About the picture: Suppose to be some kind of disappointed bodybuilder gone extreme, you know the steroid phase when mankind actually looks more like some kind of ape. ;)

Pencil sketch 30 mins, I wanted to do a whole body, I can do a whole body, but I'm too lazy....
http://www.xs4all.nl/~rfriet/peppo/images/peppo_bigarm.jpg
Ps.:Could someone please tell me that I'm a lazy son of a **** and should draw more?
Edit:Heh...owyeah..forgot to say that the drawing was so big that it didn't fit on my scanner:rolleyes:..
Edit2(yeah yeah)::eek:...i just saw a BIG mistake in the shoulders' muscles....arghh..why!?!.....the biceps must be flowing trough teh shoulder..and not stopping against it..and the shoulders strains are placed differently...that's why it seems that it just 'pops' from shoulde to arm....let's try another one:D...now with a full body;)

Normally I try to avoid drawing big muscular types. So I drew him in "hulking brute standard pose"and had fun doing so. (I should have a
first time free card here somewhere) :)
Faxtar: That looks like a good study. It also looks like chocolate. I like it.
danielh68: I really like the sense of motion it has.

Mad Giraffe the latest one rocks. Did you loose interest when you did the legs?
That would be later than I did :emb:
Great idea for the earlier one too.
Surprise: Arnold in "Santa save X-MAS".
A false Santa tries to ruin the holidays!
Santa mustn't let that happen! :emb:
Good use for ROTK deleted scenes found.

Ps.:Wasn't Santa a Big fatty? And..is that right one Saruman?..he looks like him...and so does that white ball, it looks like the all seeing eye from LOTR....

Bit of a scary topic.
Davi - Really nice and weighty.
Vimmzy - What a great concept! We all need a Billy!
Faxtar - I thought that was a 3D render at first, very nice work.
Danielh68 - Love it. Lots of movement, and I really like the texture.
Mad Giraffe - I laughed out loud ( twice ). Great stuff!
Good stuff from everyone!

They look still ok though.

I spent like three hours on this one, the pose and basic sketch were fine and done in five, but I got really frustrated doing the colour and redid it like five times. Part of the prob is that Im a noob to painting. How did you do that colour Matt Dixon? I need a tut...

Thanks again folks for the comments :) and the standard...ignore whatcha don't like
Sir Sushi: Love the face on that Hulk!
Davi: That's a cool figure...kinda wraith-like with motion
Vimmzy: I thought I was the only one who drew like that ;)
Shinobi: All the muscles have muscles...and his neck is a little off center.
Faxtar: nice!
Beatnik: I was thinking of doing something like that...there was a cartoon where a character built up like, of course I'm blanking on that today.
Miau: "there might be mistakes in the anatomy"...ya think? ;) I like it for the relaxed feel of the figure tho'
danielh68: Very cool painting!...neck seems a bit small for the rest of the body.
Mad Giraffe: :)
lichtpartikel: Awesome for a first study! I really like the work on your web page too!
Sir Sushi: I don't know why, but it reminds me of the old Hulk cartoon from the seventies...
Paper Slayer: At last he can fend off Miss Piggy!
Mad Giraffe: Keep drawing! Aside from the legs, the arm going to his head looks like it's broken...
Signature: I always wondered how he knew when we were sleeping...
Matt Dixon: Nice! and yes...yes it is a scary topic. :)
dane99: Looks good! My only crit would be to vary the line weights...ya know thicker lines in front.
xaviuzz: heh...new bouncer for the playboy club ?
Roger: :)
Rockhead: That looks great! Love to see it in color!
Nike: C'mon...at least you're making the effort to practice! :)
Hunger Artist: Robots can be buff!
Iiori: That should be in the back of a comic (well at least from the seventies comics)
nBT: You know the probs...and the hand hold his violin is backwards. Reminds me of old wb cartoons. :)
plaf: Winter or not, very cool :)
kungfu_chook: Poor Jimmy
Wystro: For some reason the song "Mother" by Danzig is going through my head...
Halus_Aetrolus: Sling those pixels!
Vijil: Nice mood. Better paint than mine ;)

I got too disturbed looking at my first drawing...this is more normal -- it uses the tried and true shrink-the-head formula. He's not super-buff, but at least he isn't wearing a shiny metal codpiece.

Great work everyone and thanks for the comments and crits.
Shoutout to the following:
davi - cool hulking humanoid. The extreme difference in upper and lower proportions reminds me of the same sort of juxpositioning Dali used when painting those surreal elephants with thin stilt-like legs.
Mad Giraffe - that's some funny material. Great original concept.
Matt Dixon - amazing anatomy, but the rich reflective skin hues really floor me. Both awesome and educational.
roger - it's funny to compare your work with Mad Giraffes. The idea is similar but the execution is far different. I laugh at it for a completely different reason. It has a tragic human element to it. It would be funny for a dark comedy to explore a character with such an unusual endowment.
Rockhead - I really like your work. It's almost anti-climatic when I see a pencil sketch instead of color. It's like seeing a trailer to a movie that you want to see. You always want more. In any case, I can't wait to see the painted version.
Hunger_Artist - style and energy. Your work is your signature.
brianl - cool line work. Great cartoon.
Wystro - This disturbs me. Very funny, though. Clever use of color.
MrKayne - Nice bold line work. Very dynamic.

First dsg post!
I've been reading the DSG's for some time now, loving them. I'm going to try and start joining them on a daily basis because I love what you guys do!
[edit]some comments
Plaf: Wow, excelent use of black and white ... has a great feeling of strength.
Wystro: That made me laugh so hard it was physically painful! The anatomy is amazing ... almost too amazing :) Bigger groin coverage plz k
lichtpartikel: very cool pose, and nice job on the lighting. One crit would be: when I look at his shoulders, it kinda looks like he's got a hunchback ... Not sure if that was intended or not, but maybe a little less primary lighting on the top of the shoulderblades... good pic tho!
Erp, I wanna crit more but I gotta run :( You guys are all very talented! Keep it up!

It was fun for me to do because I have a lot of trouble with composition, lighting, and anatomy. I like to be challenged, so thanks!

Well I just got back from playing and I like to crit/phrase whatever it is that comes out , peoples work. Sorry if its a bit odd...haha getting hit in the head a lot does that to ya.
SirSushi - That expression is great. The legs are really well done, maybe its hard to do legs, so I noticed it, but I think you did a good job. I Hope you continue making the outline throughout, even though its an older one. I like the second one too.
davi- Your work always seems to impress me. ^^
Vimmzy - Awesome idea! Love the drawings face.
Shinobi - Great abs. I like the way you did that. Kinda seems like one of those karate movies when the bad guys shows off his stuff.
Faxtar- Very clay like. V. Nice.
Beatnik- Haha that dudes v. scary, cool looking, yet v. v. scary. Nice expression.
Miau- I like the body, though maybe if the lines were alittle more darker and sure.. Maybe.. I like the way you shaded him. Another cool face.
danielh68- Wow..Very cool. What kind of brushes do you use?
Mad Giraffe - After that "No girlfriend" comment, haha I cant look at yours the same way. Neat Idea! The second one is scary, haha
lichtpartikel - Hope to see you around more. Neat picture.
paper slayer- That thongs hot! Haha you should make the thong pink!
Signature - Anything lotr I like, they should have had some little topless christmas party I think.
Matt Dixon - Your another one that really impresses me. Cool picture, Neat backround. ^^
dane99- Zorro? Hope you keep posting.
roger- That poor guy. Is it you? :D
Rockhead- I really like how you shaded that. Cool picture.
Nike- Touchpad? I think you should keep going with that character, looks interesting. :D
Hunger_Artist- Your styles soo cool. That kids great too!
nBT - Cute shoes! :D
brianl - Very dynamic. ^^
plaf - Oh thats cute. I like your B&W. I wanna see more! Not that it matters that I want to.. but hey!:P
kungfu_chook- Hes soo cute!
Wystro- ohhh another great thong! AND ITS PINK! YES...
Halis_Aetrous- I like the colors, though maybe lighten the thin black lines?
vijil - Nice style. :D
fresh27 - Nice! :D
Wystro - Nice color and body form.
MrKayne - That guy has a really long arm, though I like the comic style.
DraigAthar- Haha Im glad you didn't go to extreme, those are nice muscles! :D
Klon - Really like that body. Nicely put together.
OLSEN - CUTE!!:D
Spidermonkey - Cool hat Haha :D
Valcon Jet- Nicely put together, though maybe the waist is a bit thin?

hey guys,
no time to color this one today, just a quick sketch in PS. ~30 mins.
http://www.bradkurz.com/muscle.jpg
I may have strayed a bit from topic, but then again, the purpose of this sketch group to me is to get me drawing everyday. The topic I see as more of a starting point than a destination.
Anyways, some feedback to you guys:
Hand: cool, and a little scary at the same time. love the distortion. like to see more of a face and some other tones introduced.
devilbunny: great face, whats under his armpits? nice pose too.
valcon: welcome, I'm pretty new to DSG too! interesting layout. keep challenging yourself. you're doing great.
spidermonkey: excellent, but so small. also a little disturbing :)
olsen: fun idea, nice colors
sorry I can't go down the whole list, but everyone has nice work. besides, I think everyone has gotten some feedback already...
I do want to say though, Plaf, yours is my favorite so far. but I don't like the grey parts. they look a little rush, and if it was straight B&W it would look finished IMO.
see you guys tomorrow!

WOW it tooks me like 20minutes to type this all up, and none of what i said is very useful. mostly just "very good" stuff :D. oh well, i like people who comment on all pieces, so i'll try to do the same once and a while.
SirSushi - very nice D:
davi - thats incredible, really cool looking. i just love the hunchback
Vimmzy - ahah i like the way you did that, the whole scene is very good. kinda sneaky way to get off topic :D
Shinobi - nice looking, good muscles, head reminds me of frankenstein monster
Faxtar - oh thats great. not so detailed, but the skin looks very realistic (old up and just plain weird, like they do at those competitions :D)
Beatnik - wow, lots of muscles. i guess thats the topic though. face looks kinda like GWBush to me
Miau - very nice, i like the wind
danielh68 - incredible, love the colors, textures, the movement, the pose, just everything
Mad Giraffe - arm looks very good, aside from that weird muscle transition you pointed out
lichtpartikel- i very much like the pose
SirSushi - very good hulk. i like your first one best though
paper slayer - incredible :D muscles look good, face is hilarious, love the whole idea
Mad Giraffe - great, funny idea
Signature - pretty funny :D looks like theres a lot of space between pecs and abs
Matt Dixon - thats great, looks just like a body builder
dane99 - nice style. hat looks weird to me D:
xaviuzz - scary. :D wouldnt want to run into her on the street, but its good nonetheless
roger - very funny, looks good too, both the muscled and skinny sides
Rockhead - very good, i dont know who bane is though. batman villian perhaps? reminds me of a mexican wrestler :D
Nike - very good for what you had to work with
Hunger_Artist - nice robot, love the muted colors, background is appealing for whatever reason :D
Iiori - nice and funny :D the ad presentation is great, as well as the woman
nBT - very good, arms look great. legs are kinda bad though :D
brianl - love the colors as well as the character. colors really make this one great
plaf - oh i always love plafs style. those guys look absolutely immense and powerful
kungfu_chook - very nice, real big strong man :D
Wystro - yes, that scare the hell out of me :D creepy but nice looking.
Halis_Aetrous - looks very good when scribbled like that
vijil - i very much like the lighting. face is nice, and that tattoo just makes it a little bit cooler :D
fresh27 - booooo get the fuck outta here
Wystro - very strong looking from that angle. strong face. crotch just stikes me as weird, sorry to say :D
MrKayne - love the motion and the strong lines. nice poses on both characters
DraigAthar - very nice lighting and structure, the face looks a little darker than it should be though
Klon - nice, looks like a great sci-fi pilot
OLSEN - love it, what is that though? anteater? bear? its huge and great looking
Spidermonkey - nice idea, kinda creepy, muscles look great
Valcon Jet - nice looking, the split colors kinda distorients me though, makes it hard to study it
devilbunny - strong muscles, yet with a skinny spider like body, i like.
William b. Hand - some incredible weird william b hand. huge fantasy type creature. hugantic to the max.
josephrey - yeah, just weird. i wont ask :D
bkmini - very good, doesnt look extremely overdone with the muscles though :D i think it would fit better in the chess piece dsg from a few days ago, maybe as a night. good regardless.

Thanks for the commments. :)
I did a little coloring, and slightly fixed his arm. I figure since I don't have time to teach myself more realistic drawing skills, I'll stick to a style.. besides, it's looking alright, if I do say so myself :D

Ok, i feel like typing stuff. As always, if you donīt agree with what i say, ignore me.
SirSushi: Miau said it best; OMG, itīs art!
Carnifex: I feel your pain, my tablet is slowly beaking down, luckily iīll buy a new one in a few weeks but it still sucks.
Davi: Nice doodley.
Vimmzy: Cool idea. But it wont last in the long run, practice that anatomy. :)
Shinobi: Welcome to the dsg, he looks angry.
Faxtar: Nice colors, you have captured the greased up bodybuilder skin very nicely.
Beatnik: Massive. :)
Miau: He has the neck of a bull. :) Cleaner linework wouldnt hurt though.
danielh68: Nice! Good textures on the canvas and I also like the colors. :)
Mad Giraffe: I had something like your first post in mind at first too, but since you got it right the first time, i had to rethink. Yea, and youre a lazy son of a ***** and you should draw more.:) (your ballerina scared me...)
lichtpartikel: Cool, i like how you darkened the face, i often forget about lights and shadows when i do linework. If you would push the lights it a bit further it would be even better.
SirSuchi: He looks angry. Clean lines and good pose.
paper slayer: lol, funny idea.
Signature: Im glad i wont be spending x-mas in germany. I like my santas fat and old.
Matt Dixon: Good as always. Your lights have the right authentic color, very cheesy, very good.
dane99: It has potential, getting strong contrast like that right is not easy. Itīs my belief that with some anatomy practice you could do some stunning black and whites. Keep at it. :)
xaviuzz: Scary. :)
roger: nice study! I wish my models looked like that.
Rockhead: Great!
Nike: Did you use a touchpad for that? Not the best tool i suppose. :)
Hunger artist: I love your style man. Always looking forward to yours. :)
Iiori: Nice ad. :)
Nbt: Weird. I like his right hand, and the general idea. Keep at it. :)
brianl: nice comic style. The judge looks very friendly.
plaf: i like your stuff.
kungfu_chook: The head reminds me of a cartoon character from my childhood. Good one. :)
Wystro: The pink one, itīs just not right having a codpice like that. I didnt dare look at the second one just in case there would be another pink codpice. :)
halis_Aetrous: Cool, but i believe that if you had used a brush with more texture, it would have been a little better. :)
vijil: go to www.gfxartist.com and look at the turorials they have there, some of them cover digital painting fairly good.
fresh27: funny. As for your question, it started out as a boar, then i improvised from there. :)
MrKayne: Speed always wins! I like the colored one.
DraigAthar: Nice one, however, highlights like that aer not usually white, a more golden color would be nicer imo. Btw, like your avatar.
Klon: You should have pushed the design of his outfit a bit further. It has potential. :)
Olsen: You must have been very happy when you got the brush for the red flowers right. :)
Spidermonkey: Fantastic. Reminds me of a DaVinci piece.
Valcon Jet: It has potential, keep at it.
devilbunny: cool.
William b.hand: good as always.
josephrey: nice one. Itīs not very muscular, but i like it anyways. :)
bkmini: i wish you had colored it. It looks good.
Devilshild1017: Nice contrasts.
Terayon: Will be cool to see it finished.
Fuuuuuuck, theres so many of you, but thats good, more art to browse.

Man, I am really impressed by all of you who had the patience and kindness to write every single person a comment! That is awesome. I'll have to do that too sometime, I know how great it feels to get comments. I think some people should read or reread the dsg rules because there are some who are sneaking in the negative comments about their own work. NO DISCLAIMERS!! Just do your best and post it, everyone is at a different level, the important thing is we're all getting better individually and as a group. Great work today! I really wanted to color mine but I don't think I'll have time until some other day. And for those who didn't know Bane, he is the villain who broke Batman's back in the whole Knightfall series. Cool story. I've rambled enough. No disclaimers. Be positive with what you have.

An Update...
Not happy with the head, though... I might change that.
There're actually quite a few things I'd like to do to it.
Since I almost never do characters, this is great practice for me.

Sorry guys...but I ain't going to post all my comments(somehow my comments aren't always that much appreciated, maybe because I critisize too much:rolleyes: )
I just wanted too say: DAMN William B. Hand!!!...yeah your right the head's maybe a bit too bright and too small.....maybe you could make it look a bit more like his shoulders, 'cos that's just looking awesome:D.
Thanks for appreciating my pic everyone;), never could've guessed that it could be so good(the idea then..)....see yah next time then:p.
Edit:From what I've seen....it's clear that there is very little criticizm here....mainly because people are not wanting to offend anyone(I'm doing such things automaticly), and when they sometimes critisize...they are mentioning the obvious...please don't see this as a complaint, just as somthing I'm mentioning....(I don't want to offend anyone:rolleyes: )

Yet another update.
I went and threw some skin on this fella, trimmed him up a bit in the waist and belly, and made his face more appealing (hee hee... :D I figure if I'm gonna make something so powerful, I'd better put someone nice in charge!)
I promise: no more updates!

bkmini - I took your advice and added a face and a few more tones... Thanks!
fresh27 - Thanks! "hugantic to the max", huh? Ha ha. You are quite the wordsmith, sir! A fitting phrase for this fellow, to be sure.
Mad Giraffe - Thank you! You were right about the head being awfully bright compared to the body.. That's fixed now. But, I gotta shift those skin tones a little outta Pink, I think.
Iiori - :) I'm happy you love the thong! You think it's scary now? You shoulda seen it when it looked like a baby's face -- that was creepy. Maybe I'll include that if I update any further?
OLSEN - Thanks! Well, maybe one more update, since you asked so nicely :D , but not tonight.

Whew.... All of the people that participated in this one is AWESOME. My school thought it would benefit me to have class at 5 in the mornings. *grumble* so I have been sulking that I havent been able to participate. No excuses I know. :D I will actually try to crit. here goes...*takes a deep breath*
William B. Hand- Monster Drawing with blended head- 200.00
Second Sinister Monster Drawing with face - 250.00
Scary big mean monster man that could squash your skull with big goofy grin- Priceless. (Sorry had to rip on tbe VISA commercial)
W.B. Hand do you give lessons on your color blending and skin technique? I learn quickly!!! :D :D :D
BrkOfDon- You are right.. the perspective lines do add something extra. Almost reminds me of an anime motif.
MrKayne- I have always enjoyed the clarity of your drawings though in the uncolored one I couldnt tell that it was a little woman. :( Maybe it was just mine eyes at 3 am.....BUT... the colored one is exactly what it needed I think. Well done.
bkmini- I would love to see this one cranked out more... more views and all. Mebbie color? This is an awesome start, mean and ruff looking. Lots of potential with that one.
SpiderMonkey- AWESOMEdisturbingAWESOMEdisturbingAWESOMEdisturbin g....
DraigAthar- Nice color on his skin, the multiple shades and highlights really give him movement.
Davi - Wowzers. Would love to see him finished more! mebbie with BIG feet to match his neck? :D I would like to see how you work those legs out that would hold that body.
Beatnik- Awesome.. the overkill on muscles works so well for him. New meaning to Thunder thighs.... thats great!
MadGiraffe- Uhm... where is his elbow? the veining and muscling-ish-ness is good.. but there is no real defination on where his forearm, elbow and bicep really connect. Again.. mebbie its mine eyes. Gorilla in a tutu....I'm not touching that one, I already have enough disturbing dreams at night, thanks for fueling the fire.
PaperSlayer- YES! Oh Kermie! Being the insane Jim Henson fan I am I am sure that he would be proud.
Matt Dixon- I just hear a little angels in the background singing when I see your Mister Perfect. Color work is great, musculature is plinking awesome, very well done!
xaviuzz- ...........I think the bunny tail makes it all the more worthwhile to stare at it longer and ponder certain things..... things better left unsaid. :D Good work!
Roger - :chug: I am just looking at that and shaking my head laughing. Drawing wise very well done. Idea wise... heh... well.... yeah.. Moving on. :D
Rockhead- nice linework, highlights and movement. Would love to see some more darks pulled out.
Plaf- Great job of showing his sensitive side and his masculine side. Women dig men like that. :D Nice lines and nice shapes. well done. Or am I looking at it wrong and he picked up the bird in the first drawing then the second one he is squishing it? Hm.
brianl- Nice lines, great cartoony style and emotion.
nBT- I have been watching your style for a while. I like the way you have a new perspective at seeing things. Never seen a style like yours before. Good for you! Keep up the good work.
kungfu_Chook - What happened to his feet? :) good idea for that one!
Wystro- My Favorite for today I think. Oh... oh my! Nice little twinkle added on the steel thong. Muscle work is great and the coloring/ shading you did on Bruno is awesome. Great job picking pink as the color to bring him to life in. Carries the sensitivity paired with the flower well. Great job of using darks and lights in the piece. SUPER! Oh.. you have two. Second one is nice as well. Same loose feel.
OLSEN- I am not sure if its supposed to be cuddly fuzzy cute or ferocious mean and going to eat the keeper? Very creative!
Welcome all new to the DSG. Sorry I couldnt comment on everyone. Need to get to work.

Wow, this turned into a great one! I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who gave me specific comments, I really appreciate it. I need you guys to help me improve! :)
I'm sorry I don't have time to go through and comment on everyone's work, I will try to start doing so in future threads, when I get a chance!
MadGiraffe - you're welcome to give me contructive criticism anyday! I NEED it. I hope that people don't get afraid to give others constructive criticism, because it's so important to have more experienced artists help out those of us who are still learning out way along.
