ROUND #142 :: Knights of the Round Table

DESCRIPTION

Choose one or more of the Knights of the Round Table. If you do more than one, please keep the designs consistent so they work in the same universe!

Please give some visual clues as to which knights you are illustrating - I don't want just random knights, I want designs based off of the particular stories of the characters you are trying to illustrate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_the_Round_Table

Some of the more popular knights in particular:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_arthur
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Galahad
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Lancelot
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Percival
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gawain

Other figures from the Arthurian legends who are knights, but not necessarily knights of the round, I will also allow, as long as you ask about them in particular first. (ie, the Green Knight, King Pellinore, etc.)

Does anyone know where I can find symbols associated with the knights? Wikipedia just isn't doing it.

I remember I had to do a project involving a saint. The Catholics actually have saint cards for keeping track. How, you ask? They have tons and tons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_symbology) of associated symbols to the point that pictures of them take on a tarot like quality. Sure, Mary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_(mother_of_Jesus)) has three nails and usually wears blue, but Corbinian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corbinian) has a motherfucking saddled bear. Future CHOW, anyone?

Anyway, I'll keep looking. I know that Arthur is often associated with bears, but for Bors, Galahad and Perceval, I'm really coming up dry.

I found a couple sites that may have the information you are looking for:

Its going to take some reading though... these are both very "thorough". :D

Really interesting!! I want to do Sir Bors the Younger:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bors

He was recognizable by a big scar on his face. At one point, he chose to save a maiden instead of helping his brother, which made his brother quite angry :P

Ooo, a great topic. I've got a busy week this week but this may be too much temptation to ignore. I think I'm torn between Mordred (Autumn_Elderand according to wikipedia he's a knight) or Sir Elyan the White. Bernard Cornwell wrote a trilogy based on Athurian legend http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Warlord_Chronicles, that's pretty good.

I want to do sir Geraint (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geraint) , this one is awesome , and somehow is kinda free , because is in a age between roman and medieval armor and warfare , that gives you more freedom of creation.
Ha ha, I read lots of stories of the knights , i think the whole lot were kinda retarded, in the good seance. They changed blood in their family, marrying other people from their family , everyone was everyone's cousin, brother, uncle [ No offense to lower class southern USA inhabitants]. ha fun.

So good luck everybody, i think this is going to come out great.

Daest - Just wanted to run Uther Pendragon by you. According to Robert De Boron, Merlin created the round table for him after he defeated Hengest.

He was also supposed to have created one of the 3 great spells, but it doesnt tell me which one! (more research needed)

Anyway, is it OK to concept him??

Daest - Just wanted to run Uther Pendragon by you.

Usually 'Knights of the Round Table' refer to Arthur's knights, and in the later stories the table was given to arthur as a wedding gift, but.

Ya ya.. this is my first post on this site.. been lurking for a few weeks and am amazed about the artwork posted here.

Anyways, this topic is too good to give up and I think ill give this a try, even though I have the most trouble with digitally painting things, and I even have more trouble with the human figure. sigh. The life of a relatively new artist is difficult. I drool over some of the works here. Someday ill be that good... someday.

I'll put in with Percival. I'll make sure to do a proper job of it this time. Are there any requirements for details? Or is it only that it be recognizable? I think I'll have him praying with the grail, but I'm not sure.

Also, I tweaked my screen today so there shouldn't be any more issues. I matched works in Stokstad's Art History book to googled versions.

Good luck to everyone. Can't wait to see some of the stuff for this one.

caradoc briefbras. the story is a bit confusing(probably because of my poor english) specially about the nickname strong/stout/short arm and the parental names. but i like the story and the character has a nice background.
i dont know how young he is, but i didn't want to make him too young.i didnt look for visual references, so for know is just my idea of 5th or 6th century medieval costumes...need to fix that

Yeah, the story is totally fine and good, I just mean that this is a knight-design round (though I want knights as characters, I still want knights), and G is figuring fairly prominently in your image ;)

I kind of want to save her for a later round just in case, anyway.

Kelly x this may seem like a moot point and I dont want to be a jerk or anything but your guinivere looks a ton like Keira Knightly from the King Arthur movie cover. Okay, so I was thinking- is it possible to draw Arthur just after pulling the sword from the stone? Technically, the sword in the stone is proof of his being the true king... I'm just worried the topic might want an Arthur at the height of his powers or something. It would be horrible to put tons of work into an image, only to find it wasn't valid xD

Ok my wip of Sir Bors the Younger, running off with a maiden. In the background I want to draw Bors' brother who is in trouble. (Bors chose to save a girl instead of his brother according to the story). Daestwen: I hope it's okay I included the maiden in this image?

JessiBean

Arthemis IX - watch out for your composition getting too cluttered, it is already very full with the maiden and the knight, the horse, the background, adding another figure may be even more distracting, and this all makes him not quite seem the focus... maybe consider ways to open this up, use less external things to tell who he is? Also, why crop it there? If she is going to obscure so much of him and the horse, why not go larger so you can get their entire figures in there too?

Lots of ways to work it out, just push a little further.

Ok... I rarely draw "real" guys let alone manly men in Armor.... so I'm pokin' along here. Not planning on much story telling... just a character posing since the subject matter is real tough for me!! The plan is this will become Lancelot, young... when he leaves the Lady of the Lake to join with Arthur. Gonna maybe put a lake in the background if I ever get the character done. :D

So I don't know what to do with that damn right hand... he'll be wearing gauntlets... the angle is off, but I want more of the front of the gauntlet to show (since thats where the fancy design part is!) Maybe have his hand on his hip? I don't know.... stupids hands. *grumble*

EDIT: Drew up his head.... his hair will be that Medieval "Squire" hair... for lack of a better description. And no I still haven't fixed that stupid hand. :O

Hello everyone!
I'm on vacation, without Wacom or anything, but this sounds too good to miss.
Dae, can we wonder a bit in the theme? I mean can it be something else than medieval? Also, I can only get to a scanner once probably, so my only WIPs will be probably ink and then some colors, 2 phases. Is that a problem? I will not have time to give any remarks on other's works, I will have barely time to finish my own, but MJ Alcazar, I saw your Ghosts, and one of them had a really nice face, the best one you've ever done so far really (I think the past with the candle on her head)!

Can I do Dagonet? He seems fun..
Dagonet is King Arthur's court jester in the Arthurian legend, and a Knight of the Round Table. In some versions of the story he is merely a buffoon who has been knighted as a joke, while in others he is actually a valiant warrior. In Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, for example, he is mostly portrayed as the former, while in the 2004 film adaptation King Arthur, the character is portrayed (by Ray Stevenson) as a truly brave, self-sacrificing knight whose actions save the rest of Arthur's knights.

http://www.mattdixon.co.uk/Forum/Pellinore_WIP1.jpg

http://www.mattdixon.co.uk/Forum/Pellinore_WIP2.jpg

The idea of his endless pursuit of the Questing Beast has me imagining him as a somewhat tragic character. Showing him in old age, weary and frail yet still driven to hunt seems the best way to show this. An autumnal setting will hopefully set up a suitably gloomy mood and be symbolic of Pellinore's advancing years.

Oooh I have never done CHOW before I've not got round to charcter design yet, like my beasties too much but New years always a good time to beat oneself around the head and try and change bad habits right and I'd like to learn how to draw humans :)

I'm thinking "Sir Brunor le Noir (La Cote Mal Taile)" I was first thinking that knight who has to marry the old hag but cant seem to find a name for him and on re-reading the Story (http://www.oldandsold.com/articles11/childrens-stories-35.shtml) he sounds like a right shallow woman objectifying idiot anyway ; p So, I like the image of this knight turning up in an ill fitting coat to join the rabble at the round table ;) =Sir Brunor (http://www.earlybritishkingdoms.com/bios/brunor.html)

I have a horrible cold, probably not enough time and a whole pocketful of other excuses I'm sure :p but excuses are boring, I'll see what I can do anyway :D

1000 generations have passed since the High King was taken to the shores of Avalon. In that time countless tragedies have befallen humankind, and yet the King has not returned as promised.
Now a new darkness emerges. A darkness that threatens the very survival of the human race.

Fearing that humankind had been betrayed by the Fey rulers of Avalon, or that some other darker fate had befallen the sleeping King, the elders of mankind and the Mystic Order of Merlin
brought humanities finest Knights together. Charging them with a great quest.

To find the hidden shores of Avalon, to delve deep into the heart of the mystic land, and retrieve the King at all costs.

So, once more in a time of great despair, a light shines in the darkness. One hope for all of humankind.

The Knights of the Round Table!

Here's my contribution so far. Decided to do Sir Turquine, the bad guy that held about 50 or so of the knights of the round table in his dungeons before being killed by Lancelot, who also killed his brother. He could be summoned by a bell that hung from the trees that also held the shields of knight that had fallen to him (I guess I should find that link to the whole story again huh?)

Anyway, just a sketch. Lots of issues with it, and I think I'll change the design somewhat to fit more with the character (knight of the old ways and religions, fights with honour but is kinda evil):

OK, first time trying the CHOW.

I always prefered the pre-Lancelot bad-mamba-jamba warlord Arthur.

So this is either a pic of Arthur raising his flag, amongst a mountain full of enemies (slain or maimed), or with Mordred approaching him for the final battle. Not sure which just yet. Pretty much just "King 'o' the Hill".

Wow very busy round. So Ive taken some time think this through. I want a more classical pose. The story is Percival goes to defend Queen Guinevere's honor. He challenges Boindegardus, who has insulted her. Percival uses a javelin, piercing through the eye. Boindegardus' armour then becomes Percival, which he chooses to keep. At this point though he has no armour, and is not yet a knight.

If he needs to already be a knight I have other ideas so just let me know.

Id love some help.

Oh boy, it's been a really weird week. I finally got a sketch.
Sir Bedivere, one handed, awesome fighter, with Arthur from the very beginning of the legends, and with him to the end, brings Exalibur to the Lady in the Lake.
Oddly enough, also seems to be the only person in all the legends to NOT know that there was a lady in the lake. I guess Arthur needed someone in the dark so he could make sure Excalibur was returned.
Anyway, enough talking. Looking good everyone.

Hi, I'm pretty new to the boards, but I've been thinking of Trying my hand at one of these for a while, as I don't do a lot of character stuff, or a lot from my imagination and this one kind of piques my interest. I was wondering however
(even though you've asked KellyX to omit Gwen) if I could change the sex of the knight? You know maybe a female Tristan or Gawain, or Galahad - a la Starbuck in BSG? Well I'm probably gonna do it anyway just wondering If I can enter it?

For this round, since we're working specifically with Arthurian legend, no, I'm not going to accept female knights.

(which trust me, totally breaks my heart, because girls in full armour is one on my favourite things to draw.)

Part of this is because I kind of want to do a female-knight-ish round for chow one of these days, and don't want to throw all my eggs in one basket. ;)

oof.. Venger that's fantastic. I love the originality to the design, and its believable too. And Vorace... well... mindblowing. I love the dynamism in this piece!

Clochette, I like how young your knight seems, you've managed to pull that one off well. I have trouble reading his pose a little, the cape seems to distract, or the bent knee does. Kinda makes him seem like he's a little off-balance, or maybe its his head that needs to pull back a little. I'm not 100% sure there though. ;)

MJ, brave for taking on the guy with one hand. Nice that its a clear part of the picture too. I think whoever it was that mentioned the arm was a little stiff was right. Must be hard though because there's no hand to give the intention of movement :)

here's the WIP of my King Arthur. So far... *fingers crossed* Im managing to get down this painting malarky! Although I think looking at it now that his head is too small.

Wow, nice work everyone! This is gonna be a challenge! Heres mine that I sketched out today, still needs a lot of work but you get the general idea. I wanted to show the less mighty side of Lancelot so chose to draw him grieving in part of the story.

Im almost tempted to put a Darth Vador mask on him. 'NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!' :P

Anyway, Lancelot grieving over the death of Sir Gawaine (of which was kinda his fault to begin with).

'The accidental death of Gawain's brothers at Sir Lancelot's hands caused Gawain, one of the mightiest warriors at court, to become the bitter enemy of his once greatest friend. He was mortally wounded in a fight with Lancelot who, it is said, lay for two nights weeping at Gawain's tomb. Before his death, Gawain repented of his bitterness towards Lancelot and forgave him.'

Right, gonna go run off and get some refs! Cya! :)

Okay, so this is what I've got so far for Sir Br(e)unor le Noir "La Cote Male Taile." I mean, there's also some crude sketches I did of how the coat/surcoat/cote/cotte/over-garments/whatever would fit on Breunor Senior compared to Breunor Junior (le Noir), but whatever.

Here's hoping I can actually make myself finish it.

Here is an updated WIP. I think I've figured out the general color scheme I am going to use. Still so much to do on this, but I like the direction it is taking. I'm extremely new to digital art, and am getting back into art in general for the first time in several years so crits and comments would be much appreciated. There are so many great pieces of art on this thread!!! I would love to get some pointers from the more seasoned folks here. Thanks.

I scrapped my galahad because he was turning out rather boring. Instead, I chose Sir Kay, Arthur's foster brother. Him slaying the giant of Mount Saint Michel. still working out the giant, he looks like trash right now.

Well, since everyone is so keen on the horses I added one as well. :p Only it obviously doesn't want to look as sacred as Galahad on a portrait.

thanks :) I kind of put the whole cartoony (more vector even..) stuff to rest for a couple of years in favor of learning more realistic figures and actual painting in photoshop, and the combination of both is finally coming together a bit. ;)

Anyway here is some progress on my Arthur piece. Although I'm loosing the inspiration to complete it. Several people have been saying 'He looks like a wow paladin' which is starting to bug the hell out of me and putting me off. I'm also struggling with the lower half as you can see. Not sure if its the composition or not however. Anyway, bleh. :(

Edit: Looks much better in greyscales. Now to add some colour perhaps...

Here's an update on King Arthur. I'm still not sure how finished it will end up. A friend gave me some advice, and hopefully it is looking a little bit better, though I'm still not crazy about it.

Guys,

PLEASE remember to read the rule reminders. They are posted directly after the first post both in this thread and the final burning thread.

IF THERE ARE MORE THAN THIRTY ENTRIES, I WILL BE DISQUALIFYING ENTRIES THAT DON'T ADHERE TO THOSE RULES.

This is the last warning you're going to get. Those rules are there to make life much, much easier for me, so please read them!

Almost done...

@Windsrock: good start! You said tall as a tree, but his height does not really looks that tall. I would change the perspektive and perhaps move the horizont at about his belly (so you, the viewer, is about the half size of him...) imagine how the stands right before you and how it / he would look like.

@Keeviin: Like your linework. I have problems with the scenery a bit.
Why does he juggle with the three balls with just ONE hand, because although it is possible to do this, it looks a bit weird, although i understand that you have to give him the sword to indicate the "knight".

So this is my final. I already submitted it to the final thread but if anyone wants to make any critiques, I would like to hear them. I did it in a more comic book style, I hope that's ok. I don't see people do that for CHOW usually.

I hope that it's clear that it is Galahad. Holy Grail, Templar-ish shield, Sorta looks like Jesus, I really tried to make those things clear since that is associated with Galahad.

Hello! Great work everyone, loved the many cool armor designs and takes of classic knights! I hope a lot more get in, like yours
Vorace. Anyway, I just posted in the finals thread, but wanted to post here for comments and get to know you all.

I picked Sir Gawain and started on armor design sketches. After reading the wiki on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. I felt that a knight like Gawain, being an herbalist, wouldn't wear full armor. So, I leaned away from heavy full armor. After getting most of Gawain down, I started working on a quick background. However, I think it took away from the character, so I just cropped it for the final.

Here was my go at Dagonet. Dagonet the skilled warrior...not Dagonet the court's Jester...he kind of goes as both.

I was trying a new style that I'm not very skilled at yet, my first go at stark B&W like this using pen...didn't really turn out all that great IMO, but I ran out of time. Definately a lot of practice needed!
