I saw Quantum of Solace on Saturday. As an action movie, it was pretty good. As a Bonder, it was average. Not my favorite, but not bad.

And then, as it turns out, Die Another Day was on TV on Sunday, so my family had a fun discussion about the merits of various Bonders. Very fun!

Yeah saw Quantum of Solace the other day as well, and did not think it was as bad as people were saying, tho no where near as great as Casino Royale.

I'm interested in going to see The Spirit as well as I really injoyed Sin city, and am a fan of most of Frank Millers work,

I just got and watched the box set of The Black Donnellys. They cancelled the show after the first 6 episodes, and the last 7 episodes were neevr aired, but were put on the box set. I finally got to see the last episodes, and they were pretty good.
It was one of the most promising shows in a while, I don't know what NBC was thinking.

Then a documentary about Tool's vicarious video, very bland cut and paste documentary but a cool video (hadn't seen it yet) and a great song.

Then I watched 'Dersu Uzala', another great Akira Kurosawa movie.

DVDs I Recently Saw:

Rifftrax: The Best of Rifftrax Shorts, Volume 1 - Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett, and Kevin Murphy (a.k.a. Mike and the 'bots from MST3K) do commentaries on several short-subject films. Very fun. I wish they'd do more DVDs, but most Rifftrax stuff is only available as pay-per-download from their site. (I can also recommend The Film Crew - same group doing cruddy movies, like MST3K sans puppets -, at least The Giant of Marathon, to MSTies everywhere. Haven't checked out Cinematic Titanic - Joel Hodgson, Mary Jo Pehl, and some other MST alumni doing bad movie commentaries - yet, but I keep meaning to...)

Quark: The Complete Series - A short-lived (eight episodes) '70's sci-fi parody series. Fun stuff, but the show never had a chance to find its footing.

The last movie I saw in theaters was Bolt - rather enjoyable, though the story could've picked up the pace at times. As for TV... I mostly gave up on it.

Just saw it a few hours ago and I have to agree with that. I really liked it, but not as much as a lot of other Bond movies. I do like the way that it picked up where Casino Royale left off and set itself up nicely for a sequel though. Bond #23 is supposed to come out in 2011 and Daniel Craig is doing up until #25, at least, so I wonder if they're going to try to tie them all together?

EDIT: Also, they need a replacement for Q. Desmond Llewelyn was great and all, but they can't just leave the role unfilled for the rest of the series because he died. Bond needs his gadgets. Maybe they'll bring John Cleese back in.

Exactly. The only reason I'm not sure if they'd bring him back is because the Daniel Craig movies are prequels to the others, while Cleese's Q replaces Llewelyn's after he retires. Then again, I'm not sure how much they care about that sort of character continuity.

Back on topic, I saw Dirty Rotten Scoundrels today. That was mildly amusing.

Just watched 'Valkyrie', the recent Bryan Singer movie about the July 20th plot to kill Hitler. Excellent film! Yes, you know what happens, (Titanic - the ship sinks!) but really tense, informative and relatively close to what actually happened. The acting is spot on, and Tom Cruise is watchable with some very unobtrusive CG on his war wounds. In fact CG seems to be at a minimum in a film that seems pretty 'analogue' by today's standards. Great cast, (lots of Brits). Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp, Eddie Izzard, Kenneth Branagh and the excellent Thomas Kretschmann, who I last saw in King Kong as the captain.

Highly recommended!

Saw Snakes On A Plane yesterday. Basically, if you've heard anything about it, you probably know what you're in for. There's the obligatory decompression scene, the obligatory something-has-happened-to-the-pilot scene, the obligatory passenger-freaking-out-and-attacking-other-passengers scene, and plenty of snake-related violence. And lots of Samuel L. Jackson, of course. Not saying it's a terrible movie or anything, but you can probably tell beforehand whether or not you'll like it.

It's definitely the most actually adult show on Adult Swim. Probably the sharpest contrast I've seen in a TV show. Seasons 1-2 of MO pretty much run on one joke about fundamentalist Christians. Though they do it very well.

Possibly just as good as the movie. I'm not entirely sure how Zak Snyder could effectively blend Tales of the Black Freighter into the actual Watchmen movie, but he'll probably find a way.

I am very stupid for purchasing it now. Not because it's terrible. In fact, it's awesome. But I'll probably end up going for the Watchmen/Black Freighter double-dip when it eventually comes out.

Not as good as the first two movies (the second one was my favourite), but not as bad as a lot of people made it out to be. It had its good points and the villains and special effects were pretty well done.

Cloverfield
I never get motion sick, so I had no problem with it, but my dad had to leave after about 3 minutes. The shaky camera can get a little irritating, but I guess it worked in the way they planned it too. It also worked really well in making the special effects look convincing. X-Men Origins...Wish that the writing was better!! Wish that the story was enough to pull me in from the beginning to the end. Wish that they would let a comic book writer actually write one of these movies. Joss Whedon wrote a great run of X-Men and also Firefly(Serenity). If wishes were horses.....I'd be knee deep in horse crap.

Up: Bambi, you have just been topped for the most brutal opening to a Disney movie ever.

The movie itself is actually pretty funny, but Pixar's storytelling is getting better and better.

Drag Me To Hell: The most intense horror movie that's come out in recent years. Sam Raimi, you are hereby forgiven for the horror that is Spiderman 3.

Seriously though, it's just as good as the Evil Dead movies.

Teeth-Exactly how you'd expect a horror movie about a vagina with teeth to be.

Be Kind Rewind-Still good. Still very good.

Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter

Possibly just as good as the movie. I'm not entirely sure how Zak Snyder could effectively blend Tales of the Black Freighter into the actual Watchmen movie, but he'll probably find a way.

I am very stupid for purchasing it now. Not because it's terrible. In fact, it's awesome. But I'll probably end up going for the Watchmen/Black Freighter double-dip when it eventually comes out.

He's going to release a version with both like the book?

I was in a Korean film binge lately (I saw like twenty just this last week) but the best and one I highly recommend is Antique Bakery--not a big fan of yaoi but for a Korean movie based on a yaoi manga I'm staking my manhood here and say that I found it really funny and also the film contains one of the most original editing I've seen in any movie in a while, foreign or whatnot... I really liked it story-wise and structure-wise...

"i had a friend once who said the worst mistake that you can make is to think that you are alive

the trick is, to combine your waking rational abilities with the infinite possiblities of your dreams."

Gran Turino-Exellent film, couldn't have asked for anything more.

Terminator Salvation-Good, but not great

Transformers 2-Good...I guess

The Hangover-Very, very funny

Pineapple express-also very funny

Strangeland-Watched this on onDemand the other day. It was a pretty shitty movie, Dee Snyder looked like a clown, and not a very scary clown, more than anything else.

The Ruins-Not bad at all, kind of bummed me out though.

The Skeleton Key-Better than it got credit for. I think there should be more movies about Voodoo.

It came out in '07, and I have to agree with you on that Hookswords. I enjoyed that more than most other animated films released this decade. As for what I just watched: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). The very first part with the corpse photography was creepy, but wasn't scary at all. Just watched District 9 and liked it. Never knew what was coming, lol, couldn't predict at all. I guess the filming style made it look more like real life in which nothing happens how you plan. I guess the authors succeeded in that one. The only thing that made me discouraged was that the aliens were very much human-like in their behavior, esp. Christopher, who at times felt even more human than some of the people in the movie. I'm a psychology major and I was hoping to get an insight into alien behavioral patterns and perhaps even culture. Well, maybe next time.

I haven't seen a movie in months that tonight and last night I binged on watching a bunch of films in a row (from YouTube):

. The Painted Veil (1934, Boleslawski) - quite different (and tame) than the Norton/Watts version, but at least Garbo was freakin' gorgeous... 6.8/10.0

. The Scarlet Empress (1934, von Sternberg) - "Exit Peter the 3rd. Enter Catherine the Great."... Marlene Dietrich being cute and seductive... Very neat rise-to-power story with lots of funny characters and moments... And the tzar was effing creepy... 7.4/10.0

. Shanghai Express (1932, von Sternberg) - Anoter Marlene Dietrich flick with lots of humour and drama... Nothing too special IMO... 6.5/10.0

. The Mortal Storm (1940, Borzage) - A very sentimental and slightly overdramatic anti-Nazi film but not without some fantastic scenes--like the pub-singing scene... And a great cast as well... 8.1/10.0

You sir are a man of astonishingly good taste. I'm a HUGE fan of pretty much everything the old Fleischer studio did (everything from Koko the Clown, to Betty Boop, to the features and Superman cartoons).

I find it a sad fact that when people think of cartoons they will usually think of Disney or Warner Brothers first. There are too few who remember the Fleischers and what they accomplished.

If you have some extra Christmas Money lying around I would strongly suggest Picking up Volume 1 of the Theatrical shorts. It has 60 cartoons on 4 discs, two large documentaries, several shorter ones, and maybe about 15-20 silent cartoons from back in the day (these include the origional Koko cartoons and Felix, I think they even have the full version of the little Nemo cartoon). I must sound like I work for the DVD's distrubuters, but in all seriousness if you have any interest in Classic cartoons these collections are brilliant.

@Wiggum: Sure thing, and what's the name of that Theatrical shorts DVD?

Heckle and Jeckle: Terrytoons is the most underrated of all of the old animation companies back then, and this is proof of that.

There Will Be Brawl: For something made on a low budget, this is pretty damned good. However, there were some plot holes in the conclusion.

Ralph Bakshi's speech at the San Diego Comic-con: What this man has said is just inspiring. Too bad I don't have his Unfiltered book.

9- I thought it was a good movie. Loved the concept, visuals, and characters. It was just a bit confusing with regards to what *should have happened in the story.

It Might Get Loud- Musicians( guitarists in particular) will probably love this documentary.

Smokey and the Bandit: Still beats the Fast and the Furious any day of the week.

Awesome premise but confusing as hell. I don't really have the time to go through it again.

Watched Avatar 3D the other night, story is predictable but good enough to keep ya interested, but the CG, action and visual design is just EPIC! well worth a watch. Also, 3D you can really appreciate the jubblyness of Michelle Rodriguez's breasts!

Arrested Development-To be honest, I chuckled a few times, but I don't think that it justified the hype it has gotten.

Riki-Oh: Child of Destruction-For all the blood and gore that it had, the story is pretty good. However, I wish that there was a subtitled version on YouTube.

Dirty Pair (the tv episodes): This is one of the few instances where the dubbed version outdoes the original voicetrack. Only four the eps were subbed, but they had lousy video quality.

Sky Captain and The World of Tommorrow: I lasted about 20 minutes before I gave up on this movie. I liked the idea, but it was just painfully obvious that the actors were only taking to greenscreen that it soured the whole thing for me.

Saw both Wolfman and Shutter Island.

Wolfman is an ok movie. If you can think of it as a B-movie, you'd enjoy it. I enjoyed it. But what's spectacular about it is greeeaaattt set and costume design. If you're ever looking for Victorian era reference, make note of that movie

Shutter Island is SO GREAT. period.

Goku Midnight Eye ep. 2: It's been a long time since I saw the first episode, and after seeing this subtitled; I thought it was awesome.

I might have to check out Moon, along with 9, Haunted World of El Superbeasto, Sherlock Holmes (even though I steer clear of Guy Ritchie's movies), and Ninja Assassin.

I just watched Tarsem's THE FALL, and its soooooooo good. Not a lot of people know about it, I only heard of it by seeing a picture of one of the scenes. And its a beautiful art movie. not art related but very artistic in the way its film, the sets (which are all 100% on location, not greenscreen) and the costume design.

google image the name is all you need to be convinced! :P

Brendan if you had given WtWTA, an A+ I would agree to the whole list (for the ones I've seen anyway)

you know what, zwarrior - I think I was a little harsh on that one. Technically it was great in all aspects. Great direction, cinematography. Acting was topnotch, effects were surprisingly convincing. Original story and plot structure. Little slow to start, but then so was Deliverance. I guess my only gripe with it was that it wasn't memorable enough - it felt like I should really have connected with some of the characters and rooted for them, but some of them were just a tad too flat or annoying. Still, an A- would have done justice :)

Oldboy is sweet.

It's one of those movies that you know is sweet because people keep stealing your copy of it.

Just watched "Ninja Assassin", it's basically an 80s action flick with modern sfx. It's dumb but good and I can't help but smile at their enthusiasm for 80s style carnage.

You will want to sneak around in shadows wearing black.

Spicy City- It's too bad that HBO wanted to take the show out of Ralph Bakshi's control as a means to keep it on the air, but this is one underrated TV series that everyone here needs to check out. I wish there were more cartoons like this series...

Gumby- I wasn't into Davey and Goliath, but I kinda like what Art Clokey had during the late '50s up until the early '90s. I also want to see the documentary Gumby Dharma as well.

Sparticus: Blood and Sand- As much as I liked the Sparticus movie, this is also one badass show; even moreso than Dexter.

This month I have mainly watched

Fourth Kind - liked it, very well done - 8/10
Paranormal Activity - OK but slipped into cliched horror and ultimately disappointment - 6/10
Irreversible - the most miserable, pretentious film I've seen for some time. Better than Memento, but then again a DVD stuck in the gullet would be better than Memento - 5/10
Moon - Watchable but why did they reveal the "secret" so soon? - 7/10
Eden Lake - Possibly the best of that type of film. Unfortunately that isn't saying much - 7/10
In The Loop - Tried too hard but worth watching if you've broken your leg and the TV's on - 6/10

Crank 2 - Bad. There were some scenes that were good and some scenes that would have been good in the right movie but overall it's pretty shitty. It's like a pile of shit you have to dig in to find a tiny piece of gold or two.

From Paris With Love - Very cool if not taken too seriously. I expected some kind of Bruce Willis movie and I wasn't too off with that. John Travolta played a very cool and unusual (at least for him) role in this one and I wonder if the movie would have been as good without him. I think not.

Inglourious Basterds (Tarantino, 2009)

http://www.collider.com/wp-content/image-base/Movies/I/Inglourious_Basterds/Slices/slice_inglourious_basterds_cast_slice_01.jpg

Tarantino has done it again!... The trailers and the publicity surrounding this movie makes it look like a Brad Pitt vehicle... And perhaps it was a good idea to draw the audience that way... But who would've thought that he'd make you watch a funny and suspenseful, and not to mention beautiful, foreign-language film instead?!... This movie is genius!... The man deserves all praises... The dialogue is delicious, the characters memorable, and the music fits with every scene and I mean every scene...

And one review I read was absolutely right--this movie was more about the love for movies, our love for movies, than actually about World War II... One main character owns a movie theatre; there's a film-buff soldier turned movie star; one is a famous actress posing as a female agent; one lieutenant is a professional film critic; they mentioned Garbo, Chaplin, Emil Jannings, Clouzot, G.W. Pabst, David O. Selznick among other film personalities; we learn that nitrate film back then were highly flammable (and took an excerpt film footage from Hitchcock's Sabotage); the soldiers were playing movie character card-guessing in the thrilling tavern sequence; and one of the most important scenes in the film takes place in a movie theatre...

Oh, actually the only thing I didn't like about the movie was Eli Roth... His face just annoys me and I hate his acting... Blech!....

Gran Torino. I was a little disappointed with it at first--the script and the performances were awkward at times, and the film doesn't have a subtle bone in its body--but as the story got going I liked it much better. Good film.

Jeremiah Johnson. I think it's a beautiful movie, and for some reason it is also, for me, one of the most emotionally affecting movies I've seen. I've seen it four or five times now, and every time it fills me with feelings of vastness, solitude, beauty, and loss.

Also, Moon and Se7en. Both good.

Just purchased and watched the blu-rays of Casablanca and Doctor Zhivago.

Both excellent movies but Casablanca had a few processing anomalies. Still F-ing fine after all these years.

Doctor Zhivago was of course excellent in all ways. Even at 3 hours and 17 min it rarely dragged. And of course David Lean's direction and cinematography is always spectacular.
