Moai: I agree with you on that one.
ChristianWeeks: I was planning on starting an Underrated movies thread myself, but never came around to do it.
Here's some more of my underrated list:
1. Popeye
2. Star Wars Episode One: To all of those who hate this obviously never seen F-Zero GP Legend, but I'm saving that for another time.
3. Resident Evil (The First one)
4. Bugs Bunny Superstar: Even though this is a documentary, this is a documentary done right.
5. Batman and Robin (1966)
6. Appleseed (Masamune Shirow anime): I personnally think that this is better than Ghost in the Shell.

Dead Alive (aka Braindead in the U.S.) great Australian zombie flick. Over the top violence and black comedy
Boondock Saints
Mallrats (this may be more nostalgia than anything, great 90s Kevin Smith comedy)
Gandhi (like a 3 hour movie, fairly historically accurate, and Ben Kingsley looks EXACTLY like Gandhi)
Sidharth Chaturvedi

Mirrormask! It's written by Neil Gaiman and directed by Dave McKean, what do you expect?
A Fish Called Wanda.
Serenity.

Straight Edge Ryan: If you liked Dead Alive, you should check out Peter Jackson's other pre-Tolkien films such as Bad Taste and the Frighteners.
Sidharth: Serenity got mostly rave reviews so it technically isn't underrated, but that's your choice, not mine.

Most of Miyazaki's films that preceded Spirited Away (which has gotten a lot of well deserved attention) merit a lot more acclaim (in the states at least). Especially Kiki's delivery service, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
Let's see... to name a few off the top of my head.
-Fido: saw this recently. It's about a kid with a pet zombie. it's pretty fucking hilarious. Shame that there are so few good zombie flicks... and half of the good ones seems to be comedies (shaun of the dead). Fucking Romero, what happened to your movie making chops?
-Network: If you haven't seen this, you're missing out. Great cast, great acting and very prophetic.
-Groundhog day: This is more than just a comedy. It has a great message in it.
-Sword of Doom: This is one of the best samurai movies I've seen.

Here's one CGI film that I think is the Best CGI movie ever, but didn't get the attention it deserved: Ark. It was made by the same people behind Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, only with an original cast of characters and an epic fight scene involving giant robots at the end.

I don't know whether I just have really low standards or what, but I liked all of the above movies that I've seen so far. More:
Kung Fu Hustle - It gets pretty good reviews, but there just aren't enough people over here who've actually seen the movie.
The Matrix: Reloaded - Sure it wasn't as deep as the first one, but the action scenes were pretty great.
A View To A Kill - Seriously, Christopher Walken is actually an awesome Bond villian.

Smokin' Aces. I dunno, it had a weird plot. The movie had a pretty colorful cast of characters though, I think that's why I liked it. :|

I'd recommend Primer.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/
It's a movie about the complexities of time travel, it's quite clever in that everything make sense even though it may take a few viewings to realise what is really going on. There are websites with information and times lines to help.

Flash Gordon......?
Great soundtrack, lots of shouting from Brian Blessed and some random American football player with a great early '80s haircut.
You love it! ;)

I can't remember how well recieved this movie was when it first came out but as far as I'm concerned Mouse Hunt (with the guy that played Timone from The Lion King) was perhaps the most underrated comedy of the last fifteen years. That movie is friggin' brilliant.
Also, as a fan of animation I feel that I should at least mention Prince of Egypt. It really bums me out that Dreamworks never got really deep into traditionally animated movies, they probably could have taken Disney Down a few more pegs if they had kept at it.

P.S. I Love You is a decent movie.
It was my girlfriends choice that night and i was expecting the same old shit, but was pleasantly surprised by it. Much better than your average 'chick-flick' if that is how it would be classified.
So if your mrs is choosing and you are dreading the choice, steer towards P.S. I Love You, coz its actually not half bad.

Hmmm... not too sure about the whole chick-flick thang! ;)
A great, yet widely derided, Arnie movie from the '80s is Commando. This film is full of awesome quotes from the big man, including:
"You know I said I'd kill you last...? I lied"
"What did you do with Sal?" "I let him go."
and the great line at the end of the movie when Arnie's just thrown a pipe through Bennett, pinning him to the boiler:
"Let off some steam, Bennett!"
Awesome stuff... ;)

Jet Li's Fearless Based on the life of Chinese wushu master Huo Yuanjia. Jet Li stated this is his last wushu movie, and it's not a bad one to end it with. Very good movie, they even made a point to keep the "over the top" stunts to a minimum so most of the fighting isn't too hoakey. So watch it if you don't mind subtitles
Mr Magoriums Wonder Imporium this got a lot of "meh" reviews and yeah it is a silly kids movie, but there actually is a bit of hidden wisdom in it

"angel heart", i pretty much looked at all the "top 10/50/100 horror movies" and it was only mentioned like twice, and i think that's bullshit, it's the most evil movie ever. the main character ends up in hell and robert de niro plays satan, it doesn't get any better than this.

Little Shop of Horrors, the 1986 musical version. Seems the ratings have been going up and down all the time since it came the second time. Come on, who can't love a musical about a meateating plant??????
Rocky Horror Show (1975). It was a huge flop when it first came, now it's a cult classic. Who cannot laugh at Tim Curry in drag, eh?
Barry Lyndon by Kubrick. It actually has good ratings, but I think I have met like one person that's actually seen it.

This, definitely.
Very eerie film noir with voodoo overtones from the days when Mickey Rourke didn't look like a Muppet. I've never encountered anyone who has heard of it but it's such a classic.

Heavy Metal 2000: While the animation could have been done much better, at least the fight scenes were enjoyable and the voice acting was excellent.
Carnifex: Don Bluth's stuff is underappreciated. Plus, who can forget Dragon's Lair?

Observe and Report
I think that part of the reason this movie was seen as a failure was the advertising campaign. It was advertised to be like Paul Blart: Mall Cop meets a generic Seth Rogen movie, and the people who expected that were most likely thrown off by the really dark humor. I think the saccharine ads also kept a lot of people who would otherwise like this movie from seeing it.
Babe: Pig in the City
No. Seriously. (http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-new-cult-canon-babe-pig-in-the-city,2221/) It's by the same guy who made Mad Max. I'm not defending the finale sequence, though.

One of my all-time favorite movies. I saw it when it was released, I was literally the only person in the cinema. I was 15, and totally blown away by it. I tried to persuade friends to see it, failed totally.

Stalingrad from 1989. One of the best war movies out there, doesn't "glorify" war like for example Save Private Ryan and the other movies like that being constantly pumped out. It shows war for what it really is - hell.
I strongly recommend it.

IMO, The Village, Lady in the Water and The Happening were all underrated, at least by critics. (Mostly the village)
Then there's movies that are underrated in the sense that nobody has heard of them, even though they're fantastic.
Some:
- Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
- The Orphanage
- Let the Right one in (My favorite movie ATM)
