SUPER Stylised Challenge - January 2009 - Bigfoot (Sasquatch)

Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.

IMPORTANT: By entering this challenge you give 3DTotal.com Ltd. permissions to reproduce the submitted material in 2DArtist Magazine and all subsequent editions of the Work (by which we mean 2DArtist), its ancillaries, and other derivative works, in any form or medium, whether now known or hereafter developed, in all languages, for distribution throughout the world. 3DTotal.com Ltd will credit each artist accordingly, providing they email lynette@3dtotal.com with their full name, conceptart.org name, email address and website (if applicable).

So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!

NEW: Please aim to create your final images, and save your WIPS, at resolutions of around 2000 pixels upwards, to ensure that when you images are published they are high quality. Any screebshots are understandably going to be screen resolution (72dpi), so simply capture those as large as you can when saving out your WIP stages.

There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.

For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 31st January 11:59PM GMT - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th February 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th February to the 15th February 2008, when the winners will be announced!

We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!

Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (31st January 11:59PM GMT), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!

Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!

Judging
New Voting Rules and Restrictions
1. In order for your vote to be valid, your post count must be 50 or above AND you must have been registered on the ConceptArt.org forums for at least 6 months. The ONLY exception to this rule is if you have contributed an entry yourself to the challenge.
2. If you want to vote but are not a contributor of the challenge, you need to have been registered on the ConceptArt.org Forums for at least the last six months, AS WELL AS have 50 posts already to your name.
3. It goes without saying that all voters MUST look through each of the entries before posting their score.
4. Finally, don't vote for yourself or get your friends to vote for you in an attempt to influence votes, it's not an attractive quality.
5. The 3DTotal team are all able to vote from their CA.org accounts some of us have fewer than 50 posts but we know who we are!

We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!

This month we have chosen Bigfoot (Sasquatch)!

Hello, welcome to the challenge - of course you can join, this challenge is open to everyone :)

4500x2200 sounds great for the final image - you just need to post a screen res version for the voting stage in the forums, but if your artwork is selected as one of the top 10 then the high-res version of the image will be perfect for the magazine feature - so big is always better in that respect, when painting with the possibility of having your artwork featured in publications :)

If you really don't feel confident writing a Making Of in English then you could write it in German and I will then (if your work is selected as one of the top 3 and therefore a making of article is requested for the magazine) do my best to translate it using online language tools. This isn't ideal really, but as a last resort it's OK. Many of our contributors are not native English speaking but they still write their articles as best they can in English, so it is advisable to try and write them in English if you can, as we do edit the articles here before they get published, so we fix any grammar or spelling problems for you. Hope that answers your question!

To submit your final image, you can attach a screen res version of your image to a forum post in this very thread. You need to post your final image in this thread before the end of the month, and then a new thread will be created where you will re-post the image for the voting stage. If your image is selected as one of the top 10 then you can then email your high-res version to me, at lynette@3dtotal.com.

Hope that helps!

I would also say that this challenge is all about stylising the subject, and to be honest, if I were to see your concept outside of this thread I would most likely not consider it to be a stylised Bigfoot/Sasquatch creature. I know that Bigfoot is a myth so it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what one of them would look like, but do try to keep your concept within the brief so that we can all clearly see the subject and identify what the image is doing/saying. This will help when it comes to the voting stage, as we're all looking for the best stylised creations at the end of the day, as that's the nature of this challenge :)

Thanks for your interest in this challenge, hoping to see some more interest from everyone soon! Remember you can email your topic suggestions to me if you have any fir future challenges ;)

Hello, thank you for the answers!
Arrrrrrrr, think i finaly got the "real" meaning of "stylising"... thought of something else before. Um...ok, I´ll do something else. More... Bigfood-like :3

Here is another pic of the first Idea, just to show how far i got. Realy have Problems with this black lines. (Or... the idea of don´t doing them...) Couse of that problem i finaly decided to do some more and make it a little bit "comic-like".

Hi MA-Simon, if you like, I can send you a couple of our back issues of 2DArtist magazine so you can see the images that have been submitted for some of the past challenges - I think this will help you to understand the idea of the competition. The Making Of articles will also be useful for you.

The same goes for other challengers in here; if you'd like to receive a back issue of 2DArtist magazine so you have a better understanding of the challenge, please email me at lynette@3dtotal.com and I'll sort that out for you.

...Anyone else for this challenge? It's a bit quiet in here - eek!

hey guys, thanks for interest in this challenge - do spread the word with your friends as it's still a little quiet in here at the mo, huh! hopefully that will change soon and it'll be buzzing with WIPs before we know it :)

it's strictly necesary to post WIP's to enter the challenge?? or is just optional?

The idea of the challenge is to post WIPs to show your progress, and also so we can see that your artwork is new and created specifically for this challenge. It will help you to get feedback from other artists and suggestions on how to improve for the final submission, so it's very advisable to post your WIPs as you work through your concept to your final. I haven't excluded anyone in the past for not posting WIPs (i'm not a mean person), but it is in the rules that you should post WIPs so please always aim to do so :)

the theme is a little similar than last month, Bigfoot was a Troll, no?

errrrrrrrm, i didn't think so........? but he does have big feet, so if trolls have big feet, then i guess they could be classed as similar...

anyway, i thought this topic would be fun as you can really get to grips stylising something that has big feet! the clue is in his name really ;)

This is my first sketch. Just like with my Troll piece, I am going to include some storytelling into the piece. This is bigfoot wandering in the forest, and just like the saying goes "Shit happens". Comments and crits are welcome.

If you can post WIPs as you go along that's much better because then other artists can help offer advice as to how you might be able to improve :)

Thanks for your support, I'm glad you enjoy 2DArtist and are joinging in on this challenge - looking forward to seeing your sketch and WIPs soon! :)

What a sweet competition. I hope I can save some time to work on this, should be a lot of fun. Here are a couple of sketches, still kind of up in the air as far as direction goes.

Can anyone explain why the description of this competition specifically asks for a funny/humorous interpretation?

looking good so far everyone, murdokx dont be to worried how acurate your bigfoot looks, afterall bigfoot is so far still a myth, and until someone can give hard proof of his excistence, he/she/it is still unidentified, therefore how you interpretate him/her/it is pretty much wide open.

Lynette I know this is a 2d competition, but is it still possible to enter this usung zbrush but using the 2.5 technique?

Hi - MurdokX - If you have Photoshop CS3, put each stage onto a separate layer then open the "Animation" pallet, click a new animation frame to show each layer separately in order, you can alter the pause time for each frame, then "Save for Web & Devices" as a gif file. If you have an older Photoshop use Image Ready software for this. There's probably other animation softwares that could do this more simply, I'm not sure. Have a go I'd love to see your results.

Hiya

This looks interesting :)

Love what's going on...

Southern - Absolutely love your light rendering, looks really atmospheric
Funkdafide - Those little sketches are sweet...I like the one in the middle that's showering :)
The Original Sean - Brilliant Idea!
Artina - Love the concept...( and the bear :) I reckon what's missing though is some high contrast highlights here and there, maybe just on the bigfoot to bring him out of the background a bit and maybe some on the trees as well in the mid section but a little desaturated...hope this is useful.

thanks macarabu yours is coming along nicely
artina I think whatever he is stepped looks like a tangent is it behind the tree, front or behind his foot? I like how you render your tree, it may be a bit too much because bigfoot has the same application. Those two is fighting for attention.

This is my final, thanks guys

Regards to all, very good illustrations this month guys!!
Here my proposal... is only a sketch
my idea is to make a snow bigfoot, like a yeti (is this correct for the contest Linette?)
I put it snowboarding... maybe with a snow table or maybe with their feet as a board

Macarabu: Something you may want to consider is where your characters are focusing their attention. If you have both characters clearly looking "at the camera" it sends a lot of unclear messages to the viewer in terms of what is actually going on. The gaze is a very strong visual cue, it implies something important is going on where that person is looking. What or who are the charaters looking at? Who is sasquatch so pissed off at? You would think the hunter, but he isn't heading towards or even looking at the hunter.

MurdokX: It's looking pretty good. You're compositions have a really creepy feel to them and I like the different approach to the fur. This is just my opinion, but the face you went with looks very young and it seems more like a jungle boy than a giant sasquatch. You may also want to add a few scale cues to your piece to make your sasquatch seem a little bigger. Something like some black crows in the background.

Artina: I would have to agree with MurdokX about the tangent and the brush strokes.

For everybody: I know, I commit this crime as well but I may as well throw it out there since this was crammed down my throat in my design fundamentals class. Having your focal point or character smack dab in the center of your composition is 9 times out of 10 really boring to look at.

---

Here's what I've got going so far. I really wanted him to be spitting water out of his mouth, but I struggled with making him look surprised while he was doing that. Maybe adding a soap bar shooting out of his grip will make him look more startled. Not sure about the tree covering his arm, either. Crits, please. ESPECIALLY on composition.

Thanks FunkdaFide for your comments, they're very good points to think about and I admit that I didn't consciously think about the scene too much. My thinking though is that my Sasquatch is storming out of the woods at night and the Hunter is surprised and belittled by a much superior gigantic hunter "The Sasquatch".

I'll hopefully be able to post some wips soon...

FUNKAFIDE: I love yours! I have a suggestion about composition...the tree in his right hand is a bit distracting. I thought that if he was using it as back brush instead (so he's frozen in mid brush) that would compliment the scene...

hope that's useful ciao x

I have to agree with Urin Pta about some overlapping between a troll and bigfoot. Forrest creatures, hairy etc., but maybe its makes the challenge even greater. Southern, I love your entry, good atmosphere trough lighting and very convincing head. Maybe I am missing an ear but thats picking. Other great sketches already also.

Here's mine, I think I go for funny this time.

I like your tapdancer too. espec the top right on the 3rd page is very cute.

I put the right foot a little lower. it looks more in perspective that way.. though I might have to make the feet bigger again now.

[B]The Original Sean[B]- Hi - I have a suggestion. I really like the composition between the sasquatch and moose, really dynamic. The ground is bit distracting for me though don't know if it would look better a dark green instead of brown.

Thanks so much for the advice angel intheuk. i put in some greenery. i'm not really sure where to go from here. any suggestions anyone?

here's where my sketch is going, any thoughts? i wasn't sure if the head was too low, i mean its an exaggerated post and huge arms and shoulders. i'm going to have a few birds coming down and perching on him while he looks irritates as he sits on his crushed log. sort of a humorous contrast between little fluttering graceful birds and a huge heavy beast crushing things beneath him.

Cool stuff so far

Southern. Dig your guy, but I think you could do with toning down the saturation (at least in darker areas)-I'd suggest taking a look at other furry animals in sunlight to see how the light reacts with the hair/overall body. Its a good idea to have areas of saturation vs areas that are less saturated-an image thats all very saturated doesnt have the play between the two...still nice though;)

Might play with it some more....we shall see

Uhm, daveneale--that is quite possibly the most adorable, innocent bigfoot depiction i have ever seen, sorry if you happen to not like things being labeled that way.
Overall, i think its wonderful idea and is well drawn. i cant decide if it needs to be less dark with some more detail at the bottom and top or if i just personally want it that way because i seem to just go from the little figure to the fury guy to the little figure to the fury guy,and ignore the top and bottom of your piece completely.
Also, not really important, just wondering--there are these big circles of lighter color on the hair/fur that i cant tell if its just where you were drawin with a big brush or something, or its supposed to be light coming through from the tops by the vines there..?

ruth: the sky is beautiful and i like that you lost the trees, it really opens up the image, focuses of your character and makes the pose seem much more like he's flying through the air. can't wait to see the finished.

alberto: i like the idea but you a few problems with the magazine to fix - the "times" title isn't centered and i'm guessing that the banner should read "First real photograph OF bigfoot" not by bigfoot.

antarctican: really funny image and very well executed.

r marz- amazing texture on the fur and the shading gives it real volume. maybe apply a bit more of that to the face. it looks a bit like his eyebrows and around his mouth are on one flat plane. great texture on the log too.

riotorange: Glad you like him :).....and cute is kinda what I was aiming for so no, I don't mind the label ;). I was intending the focus to be on the boy/bigfoot and purposefully made the outside rougher/less of a focus so I guess that did it's job, would like to revisit it a little but probably wont have time...and the circles were just from the rough pass I did with my big brush-I tried with this image to only add detail where the focus was going to be (Mainly on the faces)-I can get very hung-up on rendering and noodling so this has been an experiment on targeted rendering to only the important areas :)

ruth2m: Thanks...totally love you background so far!

ashess: Nice extreme angle...just be careful with those hands, don't just stick the far hand in because you want to see it, make sure it would actually be there (I would have expected the hands to be roughly level, but as it is the far hand is lower down on the window)

dirkvandulmen: awesome....love the fur pattern-but poor lil rodents :| :P

dirkvandulmen Thank you very much for the comments. That's most kind. I'm endeared to your Bigfoot. It's so unique and the little foxes? in the toes is a touch of genuis. Love how you've done the fur. Really wonderful design all round.

R_Marz Again, thank you for the comments. It's appreciated. Glad the humour come through. Wonderful textures on your character. The lighting on the fur is excellent as is the moss on the tree stump and his toe nails! The inclusion of the birds gives your Bigfoot just the right touch of sentiment. Quality work.

Rolox That's very funny! Great idea. The expression on his face is perfect.

BlackCherry I like what you've done so far. I look forward to the final piece. I like your drawing style. I noticed it with your Troll design also. I like your finishing.

Daveneale Your eye for lighting and detail is incredible. Great creature. It would make a fantastic movie character.

Macaruba I've really enjoyed watching your stages of development. One or two of your early sketches were jumping out of the screen at me! Briliant control with those colours.

Ashess Really clever idea. How are you getting on? Would be nice to see your next update. I'm curious what expression you'll give the face.

Ruth2m Very energetic pose. Can't wait for your final. I'm sure it'll rival your scarecrow entry.

Not sure if i'm going to have time to finish mine this round, as i'm caught up with a deadline and other work but i will try. In the meantime i thought i'd comment, cos there's some really great pieces of work here!

The Antarctican: Thanks for the comments :) I really like your piece, it has the comedy element. I like your linework too. What do you use?

rosatron: Nice final! Love the expressions of the people.

dirkvandulmen: Really love your idea with the foxes, also i love the colours and finish of your piece. It looks great :)

rolox: Great final! I like the idea of him reading up on evolution, hehe! Great expression, colours and lighting too and i like the border.

ruth2m: Nice piece so far, really like the painting of the background! I look forward to seeing it finished!

ashess: I like where your designs going, be good to see how it turns out!

daveneale: Really like the dark, crepy feel of this piece. It has good atmosphere and i really like the furry creature, it's kinda cute.

Angel Intheuk: Love you're sketch idea! Nice pose and expression on your bigfoot. Hope you finish it!

the_original_sean: I like you're fighting bigfoot! He clearly has a good right hook there!

Macaruba: A great traditional piece! Good pencil work and i like the expressions, particularly on the hunter!

Tommoy: Loved your sketches your final. A different take on 'bigfoot' and great bright colours.

MurdokX: Like the colours and painterly look of yours. Nice work!

I think this is going to be a touch round to vote in!

If anyone has a chance I was wondering if you could give me some tips on improving my colouring? I'd like to get a more painterly sort of look. Any advice/pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Good Luck to everyone!

Pepps - Really like the 2nd one too
dirkvandulmen - I love your rendering, so soft but sharp at the same (do you use Photoshop or Painter?)

Here's the latest WIPS I've done, Dizon thanks for pointing out the perspective issues, I've tweaked him about now and it just shows how good a second pair of eyes is - thanks

Blackcherry -Thank you I will hopefully have something resembling finished by the deadline (fingers crossed) good luck with yours if you can finish I like your style

Dirkvandulmen, lots of funny little details, great expression on the face. Maybe the colorful surroundings distract the focus a little to much.
Rosatron, fine movement in your design, I like the colors. Rendering could be better.
Daveneale, great sphere.
Rolox, very well rendered and a nice story behind it, only comment, imo the feet and hands don't match very well, but that could just be a matter of taste.
Blackcherry, the sketch looks promising, just block in some basic colors, think where your light comes from and go on from there. Be careful not to overload the background with trees and pointy mountains.

I started another one, hope to finish it in time.

Whew! this was a busy week but i finally found the time to finish. I worked on the face a lot - thanks in part to the_original_sean's comments. I added more of a value range and gave him a lot harrier face so he looks less like a monkey. I also worked on the birds a lot, playing with their poses and positions - and i added their "mess". I had planned the to include the bird poop in the drawing originally but as this thread has gone on, i think the poop joke fits right in with a lot of the others :P finally, i worked a lot on the lighting, color balance and saturation to give it that warm sun streaked idyllic look i was going for.

as for everyone else, there are some truly fantastic bigfoots (bigfeet?) out there.

artina- love the improvements you made - the image is much easier to read, and funnier now
albertocubatas - what a fantastic expression! and the fur (especially around the edges where the light is passing through it) looks great - don't let it drive you crazy ;)
Blackcherry - i hope you find time to finish, i loved your sketches - such an adorable bigfoot.
rosatron - love the circular composition with the action breaking frame, a very clever way to highlight the action. the pose on the child is just right too.
dirkvandulmen - just beautiful colors - i love the style of all the plants and rocks and they fit well with the character.

great work everyone:D

Ashess, I like your idea, the perspective makes it more exiting although I think you better use some guides for the buildings. Besides the perspective, the different lightsources can make this a very interesting piece.
Jim Mehsling, very stylish, maybe the tree in the upper right corner looks a bit too realistic.
Artina, I like it so far, one thing I also noticed in your Troll entry are the fingers, this time of the righthand, they look a bit long. But maybe I'm nitpicking;).

Finished mine.

Hello everyone, posting of final images has now ended - I'll create the Voting thread for you all shortly. Thanks for your patience! :)

Angel Intheuk - I'm going to let the 13 minute after deadline post slide at this stage as this is simply the posting of the finals before the Voting thread has been set up. Please do not post your final late in the Voting thread as I won't be able to let that one slide - sorry!

Please also do not work further on your images - what has been posted in this thread are your finals and this is how they should be posted in the Voting thread, which I'll sort out and get up in a second for you all ;)

Thanks for everyone's involvement - you've all created another fantastic competition, thank you!! :)

Only entries posted in the SUPER Stylised Challenge - January 2009 - Bigfoot - VOTING! thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2110143#post2110143) before this date will be eligible for Voting!

Voting will then start immediately afterwards and will run until 15th February 2009 10:30AM GMT.

We will post to commence the Voting on the 8th February.

Please feel free to give reasons for your selection, as it will be good feedback for everyone!

Thanks again for the great work that you have all put in. We look forward to this month's entries! Good luck, everyone!

Many thanks for all your hard work!
