View Full Version : Website Hacking that could effect ConceptArt.Org

Hello,

Since posting my artwork on the art forums.... it has come to my attention that someone posted my website on a Hacker Defacement Archive.

Yep, someone hacked it and defaced it.

So what gives? I'm still trying to rationalize this.

I am just announcing this because it might become a problem for other artists as well. Not sure what you can do to prevent this from happening...

....and just when you think the internet was fun and safe.....

I'm really sorry. I hope you can work things out as soon as possible!

im a huge lurker (currently have no means to scan/post work)

but you should (i assume you have but just incase) contact somebody eg. web service provider and possibly as far as the poilce or the branch of the american police who deal with internet crime, as thats what this is.

what's the hell... man... i'm really sorry this happened.. definitley contact your domain provider and see what they can do.

sheeeesh, i can't believe people. we should have some kind of online organization to protect internet artists and their works..

do you know what that message say on your site?

ahh, this is outrageous!!!!

gazamc---> I just contacted my web service provider about this. All ready I have downloaded all the info the hacker has placed on my site. Interesting thou... never thought about contacting the police about this, but not a bad idea if things get worse.

THanks for the suggestions:-)

BTW... I have moved the hackers data to a different location. It can be found here:
http://www.jasonfelix.com/hackers_crap/main.htm (http://www.jasonfelix.com/hackers/main.htm)

Yes. I do. Amazingly enough, the person seems to be a creative writer. And the person also seems rather depressed. Kinda creepy. For those whom are interested, this is what they wrote:

Sounds. This is a sound that we listen and that it never seems to have end. Atordoantes sounds of a long suffering in life. After the death to feel its body to apodrecer in a coffin. Tenuous I smell of flowers deceased in a small space. The horrible sound of a pressured yoke being against the glass. Alguem that if plays of the high one of a building and that it has its body crashed in asphalt. A wall recem spotted spotted with blood and marrows of a weapon of thick bore set fire to the fragile body that falls. The sound of a dying if dragging for the long corridors of the hell. The amputated hand that tries em.vão to survive without the body that enters in collapse and dies before exactly of it. The sound of the death. Something as well as a place where if it can cry out and not be listened to so great cold, dark emptiness and. In the threshold of madness. This sound has as vitima innocent people and with good intentions that have its minds absorbed for bottles of remedies. Sounds of you scheme hot in an assembly line when sparking of you scheme of weld. The sound of people crying out languages deceased. The sound of the wind blowing in relva and arvores says much more of that if it can imagine. The Sound of the waves breaking in the smooth rocks. The Sound of gargalhar of a child to play without if worrying about the day of amanha. The Sound of all this imensidão that captive me and makes me to cry. The braked Sound of one that for a few seconds or perhaps minutes speeding up of an engine goes up made me to lose everything. The Sound of wire confusions covered and envoltos in blood says that the reply this in data that cannot be descryptografados. The Sound of creaking of the teeth that look to the Peace and the Calm. That God exempts me of the sound of all this death without much suffering. E that one day I am part of all these places that I never go to know. --->AlevirusSCS

it may sound a bit odd to think of contacting the police, but hacking is a serious crime, but yeah see what your service provider says, but seriously think about taking it further. its the only way they will learn ;)

It's not one guy it's a group.

I highly doubt posting here had anything to do with your site being hacked. They probably don't even know about these boards. Your site was hacked on the basis of it's security than content or context. From my experience working at an internet company, these types of hacks are rarely, if ever personal.

The worst thing you can do is act the part of a victim anywhere. Because that will make you an even bigger target. This post is even a bad idea because if the %1 chance that the hackers read this board took down your site - they know you are pissed by it. And will continue to harass you.

Get a new website provider with better security ask your current one for compensation if possible. You should at least alert them because all clients on their service are now succeptable.

Again, whatever you do, making a big deal about it is the worst thing to do. Take down the message on your site and get a new provider. I have seen these things get out of hand once the victim starts crying out. Just move on.

Porkasaurus---> I see your point and I value your response. Thanks for sharing....and in large... it makes sense what you've just wrote. My involvement with the internet is limited, so when stuff like this happens.... it's rather disorienting.

ConceptArt is a great forum and that is why I posted here for some good insight and help. And your answer is what I was seeking. Thanks! I will do what you have mentioned.

To me this sound like some little punk that has nothing better to do than hack a site. And I guessing he or she probley took that letter from a book that they read. Its just sad that theres ppl like this out there.

wow. some people. i hate hackers. they're such dicks. i'm even more impressed by the fact that so far no one has posted in defense of the hackers, as i usually see happen. someone always comes on and says some B.S. like "hey! hackers are the good guys! if it weren't for hackers, we'd have inferior software!".....which is complete B.S., because the software wouldnt be inferior if no one was trying to break it...

Yeah, but we are just talking about artwork.... which is a less heated debate for the hacking community. I agree with Porkasaurus insight... they are more interested in messing with ISP than the website itself. Well, I can hope.

Damn man, I'm sorry about your website. That's interesting that's it's in Portugese, as Shawn Barber's (http://www.sdbarber.com) website got hacked by a Portugese/Brazilian a little while ago. To my knowledge he doesn't post on this board so it's probably just a coincidence.
Either way, it still sucks.

looks like it's a serial defacing.. They been at it again but this time by DaD|sS... Why attack artist websites tho ? I thought going after corporate or consortium websites were the "in" thing to do ?

I just looked. Yep. Guess the whole hacking group has access to my FTP account. Sucks because I cannot fix my site until the issue has been resolved. Kids with nothing better to do.

I talked with a guy at work who said it's pretty common for hackers and "movers of illegal files" to store their information on other people/companies comp's. They (basically) just ftp their stuff to other peoples ftp-servers and computers that allow "traffic" from the net (that might just be a intranet or something like that, most companies have that...).
Then they hide the files for direct view in some way (so the admins can't see it, but you can still find it if you got the correct "url" or path to the files. After that they can share stuff from someone else's computer, risking nothing themselves. I've never heard about this before, but this guy has some Pay-per-month program that makes him able to search for some of these hidden paths.

Anyone heard about this before ?

And Bomba... Just in case, try and check so your FTP account is just "your" files and not some leeches'.

Yeah... I checked for this all ready. Just for safe keeps, I delete all files except the hackers. They did place some files on my FTP account...but who knows what they are. And who knows what is hidden. Finally my Web Hosting company contacted me.... so we will see how to deal with this. Seems that this is not the first time that my ISP has dealt with this problem.

That's a shame. I can't understand why anyone would hack the site of lets say an artist or amateur rapper. To me, that's like slashing a canvas, since you can no longer display your work. Kind of sad that someone would choose to do something like that.

I can understand disgruntled fans, but people who go out of their way to heckle an artist just confuse me. There's so much stuff on the net, it's so easy to move on. Don't like it? Check-out something else.

You could start by changing your FTP password (and any other associated account passwords) to something different, and more secure. Minimum of 8 characters, and a combination of letters and numbers. Don't use anything personally identifying.

Ask your ISP about using Secure FTP (encrypted), and if they don't have it, if it's something they would consider implementing. If not, find a new host who does give you the option for secure connections.

I want to thank everyone for responding and giving me a lot of feedback on this subject!!!

Yes, I tried to change the FTP password, but don't have access. Don't know why. Seems that only the Web Hosting company can offically change it.

Finally the ISP emailed me back and changed the FTP password. But nothing else. The person never reassured me of a secure FTP or blocking future Hackings. Guess I need to start shopping around again. Anybody have a good service to recommend?

To let everyone know that Hackers can invade your site(if you have one). It's to inform others of potential risks and what to do in order to prevent such situations. At least, that was my intent.

If the hacker was perhaps a member of this community then he'd be reading this right now... And he probably ruined your site so you'd get mad. So, if we all rally against him, he will only like it. And if we cheer him on or don't do anything about it he will do it again. Its kinda paradox isn't it?

I asked for help(not knowning what to do) and people where kind enough to share their views on the subject. In retrospect, it helped to inform others as well.

Thanks again everyone for your help:-)
