Hi, I'm newish here. I've really enjoyed a lot of the artwork you folks have posted. I need to get back into drawing regularly again, so I figure making a sketchbook thread will keep me doing it often. Feel free to comment/critique/whatnot. Thanks all.

The two images below are my attempt to recreate some characters I conceived when I was a little kid.

The first one is a human/rat guy. This is the second colored sketch I created with my new tablet. A lot of just messing around and playing with brushes.

The second one is a very quick colored sketch of the rat's trusty bear-pal. I'm still trying to get the hang of the sensitivity & brushes, so bear with me.

Cool concepts, a bit Star Warsy vibe to it. The first one reminds me of a character form an old 90's movie called The Warriors of Virtue..of course they we're sort of kangaroo folk and not rat folk.. Keep up the nice work

The lighting is too uniform. The design of the rat guy is good but it lacks some drama. Perhaps some strong lighting from one side or the other to create some deep shadows or a secondary light to create some color for intrest. Keep it up!

Thank you both for the suggestions. I definitely plan on studying lighting on objects. This next bit is almost done. I have started to experiment with photoshop again, and it's quite gratifying! (sorry, I had to scale it down a little--maybe too much). The original is a little too big to post here.

Here is a concept colored sketch of Kirppu (flea). She's a new character I'm messing around with....
Pay no heed to the boring outfit. I'm just trying to find a happy medium between cartoonish & realistic proportions of the body.

You make shadows with black colours, right? using coloured shadow and black could show form and give more depth to your images
