hello, all.
i'm trying to come up with a nice holiday card illustration to send out this year.
i want it to be sort of a whacky christmas self portrait type thing.
however, the catch is i need it to be vanilla enough to hand out to family members. :)
this is the current pencil composition. i think it's really close to ready for inking.
any suggestions are welcome. the forum has been helpful in the past.
thanks for your time!

If you are looking for 'vanilla', I don't think this is it. It's very subjective, though. It depends on how traditional/conventional your family is....or, whether they have a good sense of humor. On the otherhand, this is definitely a reflection of you, so it would seem contrived to homogenize too much. Hmmm, I don't really know.
One thing, the mitten holding the candy cane seems a little off to me. It looks like her hand is flat and the cane is sticking to it as opposed to the hand clutching it.
Hope this helps,
Dan

Put the mitten thumb behind the candy cane she's holding and curve the end of the mitten over it, then it will look like she's holding the candy cane. Can't help you with the rest, not knowing your family. Although if they are religious, they might have a problem with the skulls decorating the Christmas tree. Good luck with it. I like it.

thanks for the input, guys. i hadn't actually noticed how flawed the mitten was. i will try to correct that.
and i think the level of "whackiness" will be ok with the important parts of the family.
thanks again!

ever consider harder/darker shadows? i think i like the first color before the 2nd color, maybe background is too busy

If you haven't sent this out yet I would take a quick look at the left hand again, it seems a bit small compared to the right hand, scale it up 5-10% and it will help alot.
The rest of the pic looks great and I love tones of the colors you chose.

I think it looks great. Although, I agree with cagemarrow about the hand.

hey, thanks again, guys. very small update.
i enlarged the hand by about 9% and i do think it helps. also, i added a few darker shadow areas on the floor. i think i'm leaving the background the way it is though...i'm in love with the stripes.
anyway, i think it is finished now. if anyone disagrees with that for any reason, feel free to let me know.
what would i do without you?! :)

I would go to the printer with it. Plus, I like the strips as well. Nice job.
