View Full Version : Photoshop Masks with Whit Brachna - $5 - Release date: December 30, 2008

Masks are an essential and oft underused feature in the digital painter's toolbox. In this demonstration, Monsieur Brachna ecstatically sketches a tree in a mind blowing orgy of mask trickery. Throughout the painting he talks about shortcuts, and stuff. If you want to learn how to use masks, or paint trees, just buy it. Or buy a sandwich if that sounds better. We don't care. But when you're done getting 10% better at painting in just 30 minutes please post your experiences and reviews about it here.

Sincerely,
the Management.

15 minute lecture, 30 minute demonstration (no talking)

Way back with Nox's download I was thinking , they should do a Mask demo, and I simply waited... trusting... and now I've been rewarded! Thanks to all who took the time to record and edit and make this available to us for, as well as huge thanks to Whit, cheers.

I am already familiar with the technical aspects here, so they were a review. Many will also be in this position.

However, I still got allot out of the application of these techniques to actual painting, and it was definitely worth purchasing. So if you are in the same position as me, I strongly recommend it still.

As for complete beginners, I think this is invaluable.

so downloaded it and watched it and it is hard to review. I was at first thinking eh ok.... then i rewatched and said well that's interesting. Then it dawned on me the point isnt to paint a tree. the point is the technique that can be used for what ever. so for 5 dollars it is worth it

The info regarding "preserve transparency" was well worth $5, thanks Whit and Massive Black!

That might be useful. I need to start using more masks for my environments beacause it's sometimes horribly hard to control edges.

Probably the most important download that I could have purchased as a digital artist. I found myself asking myself over and over why am I not already doing that. Whit truly understands how to correctly organize a painting and maximize photoshops layering abilities to their full extent. The tree definitely blew my mind!

Cool, just bought it. One question, are the brushes used the same ones that are included with the speed painting tutorial? I'm getting the speed painting one with the art book and the brushes and textures look similar on the the finished paintings for both tutorials.

I think this was a pretty good purchase. Thanks for the bargain MB ;)

Personally I did not learn much because I already use masks quite a lot in my graphic design, but for those that have no clue of the feature then this download is well worth it.

There was a lot of cool tips about other stuff like keyboard shortcuts and fast layer selection, and yeah, the best guide to masks I've ever watched. Overall lots of useful information in a short time. Great value.

I just d/led this.. Am I missing it, or were the brushes not included? All I have in my download was the main video, the bonus vid and the .psd.

Can anyone link me to the brushes?

DragonGX: I remember there were Whit's brushes in the Snow mountain download. In this one there's only the two .mov and one .psd file(s).

Great download!! Thank you Whit for your time and consideration to masks.
I now am going to use this feature; which I've never really understood until now.

Keep up the good work MB! I'm loving it! :D
