Android - thank you very much, your words are always encouraging.
jnorish - that is pretty good, overall it is good. the onlt thing that is bothering me is your neck, it is buldging outward. that is it . good work
skank - nice sp it is expressive and loose, keep them coming
endragen - oohhh nice, you have improved. i am glad to see you back here, those are good. remember you made a promise to a god, so you better get busy :D
brokencow - that is good i like the way it feels
mcm - good work i like how some areas have a lighter line weight than others. it makes for an interesting drawing
ok here is mine i've been trying to paint these in painter and it is not working so well. endregan i tried you idea and it was helping but than i some how made it go to shit. so i reverted back to my sketch. when i try these i have no idea where to start and how to use my colours, that is my conclusion so far...:xx:

jmac - its harder to do it digitally, well at least for myself. i see what you mean..
get a couple bottles, or whatever you have avaiable for a still life. set them up however you want. make sure they are simple enough shapes to start. try to see shapes, nothing else. there are 3 basic values. use the lightest value to fill in the whole, lets say, a lemon.
after you do that you can mix in red and blue to get the darker value (other of the basic colours mixed together with the yellow will give u darker). so make your darkest value dark, medium a medium and light a light.
the same theory applies to the face, it is made up of shapes, its just more complex. think larger. something i have troubles with myself :)
hope that helps.
Android: I will take it one day at a time. dont be alarmed, i might not be able to scan until later, but ill try and get them all in :)
later guys, keep it up!

Blackhawk, always a pleasure to see you in here, beautifull sketches, i love your rendering, the soft tonal work and the sharp contrast together as one! your head es verry big in the top one.
Nhi*, good start, the 3 tones is good advice. also, imo, you could use some sharp lines to bring it out of the blur.
asbestoshazard, great sp....really gives an impression of your shapes. *snatches and steals a smidgen of your tonal skills for self*

thanks for the crit wazzo, now i look back, it is kind of fuzzy. I think i need to work on confidence in the lines.
Also, cool SP wazzo, i like the hard lines in yours, it makes it kind of cartoony and grumpy looking, itc cool.
Skank- brave of you to do big expressions, I think i'll try that, do you draw fast or just suffer the face cramps? :-p
Groove- that is a mighty face forest, could be nice to see the beard with lots of nice detail and highlights but the face quite subtle above it, looks good though, scanner trouble kill the contrast?
silvrain- nice expression there, and subtle shading too.
asbestos- paint over the bits you dont like, that is close to a great SP, you've got the detail that mine lack...
brokencow- you dont get a crit, its just too damn good...
everyone else, sorry, i just saw how many posts there are, you make me want to try again and again, good work :-) and i'm new at this so can't really crit much, other than saying what i like...

Ni* - nice work it looks pretty good, i wish i could give you some advice about colours but i am not very good with myself. as for your eyes the only thing i can think of is take out the good ol' paper and pencil.... then practice practice practice. try using your pencil or measuring stick and find the different angles and see where things line up. that is the only real advice i can give i hope that is helpful to you.
klaivu - that is nice you look very menacing in that sp
wazzo - that is really cool!! it is very interesting and the colours are good too
skank - nice pose i like alot! everything looks pretty good, the only thing that bothers me is the neck seems to be thicker than it really is. good job

Jmac, thanks for the crit, i'd return the favour but all i see for any of your posts is fortune city banners..... I'd like to see the muscle study since thats what i kinda started doing for my second post in this thread, i'd like to see your approach.
andregan- good work churning so many out, the structure of the face is all there too, only suggestion i'd make is on one of your next SP's, try not to put any lines down aside from very light construction lines, then just work with shadow, using the edge of a soft pencil to block in the shapes.
this is addictive, here's an eye study, anyone see any improvement? i think the eye is still a bit offline...

I had so much fun with this one. Loud, angry Laibach helped the pose and the color scheme. Working with a palette minimum is challenging- but really fun.
http://silvrain.com/RisforRage.jpg
J mac - That's pretty good! Try laying down one base color and then working color blocks in from that. I do like your color choices. The strictly anatomical work rocks.
Nunch - You're improving alot! The blue one is fantastic, and good perspective on the pencil one.
Ni* - Good stuff. It doesn't have to be tightened up to be a great SP exercise. Hell, I did an SP completely with the PSP leaf brush once. Keep playing with the brushes, you never know. I also like the close up.
endregan - good dedication!
klaivu - nice grayscale work!
wazzo - Flash? Damn, man. That turned out fantastic! I like the starkness, and the color scheme. That's the first one I've ever seen done in that particular media, rock.

sadly, nothing to post, but silvrains picture was so damn good that i felt obliged to comment...
silvrain, FAWK! i really really dig that one!....the way it flows, and the pallete scheme. i was just waiting for a color one from you coz the blue ones were getting a bit stale.
I think i'll try something like that when i get some time soon. music deff. plays a big part in the process sometimes :D
i myself like using flash coz i really enjoy drawing 'viscerally' and fast....and then flash has the 'straighten' and 'smooth' function which i did cheat a smidgen and use on that last one to add some sharpness to the hair.
good work everyone!

here, my fellow artisans, is the finest example known to me of perserverance paying off! i remember coming in here sometime last year, and seeing your stuff (mcm) and going, 'ok, hes starting at the base level, and hes putting in the effort' ... with obvious progress thru the year, finally, now, i look at this last SP, and i go 'DAMN! if i put in the effort he does, i could be that much better'

Yet another try...I should get out of monochrome and attempt some color. I like my eyes in this one, though.
Skank :: The one with your tongue hanging out!...I should take a lesson and get more expressive!
Wazzo :: The color scheme is wonderful, I can't stop staring.
Klaivu :: Very clean, I like the subtle lighting
Ni* :: Nice job with your eye study.
Silvrain :: That one is beautiful, your colors...your expression...It's bold and stunning.
MindCandyMan :: That looks SO bloody good, the use of light especially.
BlankSlateJoe :: I'm always amazed by the amount of color people can pack into their work! It's gorgeous!

skank- i'm getting red 'x' for some reason, i'll come back and try later
asbestos- nice work, you've really got the hang of the monotone work. why not slap some colour on that one? i dare you
;)
blankslate- very nice use of colour there, i like
nunch- that is scary! looks like there was the room light and a light under you too.
mindcandy- someone has been practicing... very nice. it has a noble kind of look to it. it is encouraging, thanks.
again sorry for the vague crits but i'm new to this so i can only say what i like,

I'm struggling...thank you to all who have said such kind words to me. It really helps me keep going...I have a hard time seeing my progress since I am in the midst of it so it really helps to get encouragement from you guys. All I see is my need to get better. At any rate thanks everyone so much it is much appreciated. As far as the amount of time...on the one before this one I spent about 1.5 hours or a little bit less on it. Somewhere around there...hard to remember. I use the smeary palette knife...the oil pastel...and a custom wash brush for most of my stuff. Hope that answers the question.
Thank you so much everyone!

nice one majin, i dig the single light source and evil eyes... keep em coming! I'm glad to see you progressing so much with painter.
dilation-, very strong sp, good rendering skills. Your site is at wm.edu... that's william and mary, right? Me,cotron and majin are all vcu-ers. It's good to see some other people from this state on the boards... there's not many universities here offering decent curriculums catering toward this kinda stuff. anyway, goodluck on the litho.
mindcandyman-man, ive been seeing your stuff on these boards for months.. if not longer.... (werent you one of the earlier people to start doing these things?)
Its good to see your development, you're really becoming adept.

right, hello again everyone, well done on the work posted.
some crits/observations;
MCM- that one looks really cool actually, to me it screams frustration with the eye being blocked in like that, i think everyone who's picked up a pencil knows that feeling, one part just wont cooperate, keep at it,
silvrain- another nice one, i like the melodama/dispair feel to that one
Jook and skank- its weird going from the directness of a pencil drawing to using a tablet isn't it? jook, your first ones were nice, you should work into those a bit more,
dilation- excellent rendering there, only thing i'd say is that it looks a tiny bit cartoonish...
majin- cool, looks very moody and angry. i feel like that when my ribena box bursts too :-p

December 10th, 2003, 01:21 PM
majinpunisher - i like that it is very interesting :)
dilation - that is really good, i can't wait to see the litho
skank - good first try with your tablet, they are hard to get used to huh? i am still trying comfortable with it. keep it up!
jook - good attempt i think you should start to measure out your face and features more.
silvrain - how is there any debate whether you should post this or not.... this is awesome i am glad that you posted this. looks good :D
MCM - not to shabby i like it. you still are doing really great!
everyone is doing so well it is awesome, so keep them coming strong!!

just a sketch that got a bit of momentum. the faces are a little out of proportion but i wanted to see if i could manage different angles with a likeness. not sure if i succeeded... the front facing one was going wrong so i started with the structure and just kept drawing it with the accassional prod into my face to feel what shape it is...

Ni* - you got it bud.....here comes some crits/help :D for the most part you have a good idea of what is going on with placement of your features. you have a good start there :D i think you should learn and develop form and structure of the head which you have already started. try doing some studies and reference work on some good old paper with your good old pencil. also use the light to see the planes of your face. you have a good start to everything, now you should start to draw your features more thoroughly. oh and this is what i tell everyone measure, measure, measure and than mark. it might sound tedious but it is worth it :P
you know what would be good is for you to do a sp on piece of paper (good working size) than next to it try to re-draw it but with your skull and then maybe another one with muscles and cartilage of the face. i hope this helps a little. it is kind of hard to crit the more loose sp's but i wll try :) good luck
Locker - those are really cool looking sp's they are really stylized :D on the side i think you should just post the images inside your post instead of linking. good work
BH - yay! you got another one in... looks good even though you are all stressed out. but it is good to see you drop by
ZZ - i actually remember your last post. it was before i started posting here :P welcome back and good work!
Skank - yeah they are headphones, i have 3 other roomates in my dorm room so i have toon them out sometimes...:D imagine if they were piercing they would be massive haha
OK i would be posting my sp's but my computers A-drive has been officially declare dead :realmad: so i can't post anything, because i have to transfer my files from my comp to a comp that has internet so i can post my art. oh well when i fix that i will post everything for you guys/gals.

blackhawk (nice painting as ever), you're right, although its christmas we should still try to keep this thread going after such a good start.
I think it would be good to each suggest a different approach for eachother to try, to force us all to push ourselves in a different direction, what does everyone think? i know i could use some direction, i'm meaning like doing a different side or working in a certain colour or greys or something.
endregan- yours are getting better in terms of the shading and values, the lines you drew to make up the face at the beginning of the month are dissappearing, good stuff. maybe try using a really soft pencil or charcoal, or you could work more into an existing portrait to increase the contrast a bit, even an ink wash?
