December 1st, 2003, 09:51 PM
keyth and BH you guys have been missed around here. Glad to see you still at it.... so post more :D
i forgot my digital camera at home so i can only post things that i can scan or i do digitally. to bad i can't draw on the computer period. oh well i guess i will have to try now :p
let me know if these are too dark, they look fine on my comp but i have to take the images down to the computer lab to upload and they look dark on this comp.
December 2nd, 2003, 06:10 AM
-J.mac, not to dark on my monitor- lookin' good.
December 2nd, 2003, 10:38 AM
RickHudson - ok thanks :D nice sp, i like how your lines loose and free. it makes the sp more unique and interesting.
here is mine, i did this while i ate bfast, cinnamon toast crunch, it was good! still trying to get used to drawing on the computer. i think i am going to try and do this with bfast everyday :D
December 2nd, 2003, 02:49 PM

brain - hey it kind of looks like you have pink eye, which i hope that isn't true.
here is mine during breakfast again, this was about 10 minutes. if any one has any tips on how i could paint better that would be appreciated.

I haven't done this in awhile...
December 3rd, 2003, 11:28 PM
Haha Nice to seeya BH/. wondered where ya been!
Good to see some familiar faces!
Jons going at it too, gotta love it. linework is nice :)
nice to see ya again keyth. headphones still attached eh :)
broken cow awesome...
jmac wicked for digi painting. too sketchy painting perhaps. block in huge forms of colour. 3 values minimum to show form. light medium dark. even though i am no portrait paintiner, still - life paintings help tremendously with this sort of thing. but keep at it man, nice to see some colour even though your sketches are coming along.
gotta love the sketches jhibbs! :)
Mine. first charcoal, others graphite. Decembers Goal- TRY to do one a day. :)
December 3rd, 2003, 11:48 PM
jmac- great skull, more of those will help your form,
broken- fanyastic, i love the hanky cowbow,
endragon, good goal, now im gonna hold you to it, one a day!
remember to be patient, just take it a day at a time, its easy.
December 4th, 2003, 12:49 AM
im gonna take the android challenge...im gonna do one of these a day.
this is my first SP...EVER.
ive never used a refference for anything, it feels very wierd..lol
so here goes :chug:
and no, my hair doesnt look like that normaly...id been wearing a hat all day, ran my fingers thru my hair...and bam, there ya go. was fun to draw tho !
cheers! keep up the good work guys
December 4th, 2003, 01:14 AM
Great way to start the month off guys
I myself is going to try and get as many sp's done as possible. This one definetely didnt turn out the way I wanted, but was good practice.
*cough* please excuse the quality, my scanner is crap and small
December 4th, 2003, 10:31 AM
Android - thank you very much, your words are always encouraging.
jnorish - that is pretty good, overall it is good. the onlt thing that is bothering me is your neck, it is buldging outward. that is it . good work
skank - nice sp it is expressive and loose, keep them coming
endragen - oohhh nice, you have improved. i am glad to see you back here, those are good. remember you made a promise to a god, so you better get busy :D
brokencow - that is good i like the way it feels
mcm - good work i like how some areas have a lighter line weight than others. it makes for an interesting drawing
ok here is mine i've been trying to paint these in painter and it is not working so well. endregan i tried you idea and it was helping but than i some how made it go to shit. so i reverted back to my sketch. when i try these i have no idea where to start and how to use my colours, that is my conclusion so far...:xx:
December 4th, 2003, 04:55 PM
jmac - its harder to do it digitally, well at least for myself. i see what you mean..
get a couple bottles, or whatever you have avaiable for a still life. set them up however you want. make sure they are simple enough shapes to start. try to see shapes, nothing else. there are 3 basic values. use the lightest value to fill in the whole, lets say, a lemon.
after you do that you can mix in red and blue to get the darker value (other of the basic colours mixed together with the yellow will give u darker). so make your darkest value dark, medium a medium and light a light.
the same theory applies to the face, it is made up of shapes, its just more complex. think larger. something i have troubles with myself :)
hope that helps.
Android: I will take it one day at a time. dont be alarmed, i might not be able to scan until later, but ill try and get them all in :)
later guys, keep it up!
December 4th, 2003, 09:40 PM
Comments later. Woohoo, so many of the regulars, even Android is popping around more often, makes me feel fuzzy.
December 5th, 2003, 04:42 AM
edit: lol wow, i drew this last night while i was almost passed out drunk...kinda funny how things look when youre drunk..
December 5th, 2003, 12:36 PM
gulp... well, here goes, borrowed a wacom for a while before i buy my own and it's let me try a bit of photoshop painting.
First serious sustained effort at a SP so any advice would be greatly appreciated, I stuck to 3 grey tones then did a pale colour wash over.
I hope this image works....
great work on here, very inspiring
December 5th, 2003, 12:52 PM
..I may as well post this one too. A little experimentation, so it's a little simplistic but great fun to do and it even kind of looks like me.... 'cept i have skin and stuff....
December 5th, 2003, 03:02 PM
What a great way to start off December fellas:thumbsup:
I'll be joining you guys next week on friday. The semester's over then.
December 5th, 2003, 10:47 PM
and another one .... this is fun! aside from having to stare at yourself in the mirror...
pink one this time, purely accidental...
December 5th, 2003, 11:23 PM
i think my hat is trying to take over my brain....
December 5th, 2003, 11:46 PM
i think your hat IS your brain :) sweet portrait tho skank :)
ps. op ivy owns
December 6th, 2003, 12:43 AM
Two hours spent playing in open canvas, drawn with the help of my trusty digital camera:
I haven't just sat with the direct purpose to draw myself in a long time. I'm not pleased with my ear; I do like my mouth.

December 6th, 2003, 05:28 AM
quick one, sorry for the lack of contrast.
December 6th, 2003, 06:27 AM
THAT is a badass burly beard my friend....mucho kudos for the dedication in growing that :chug:
December 7th, 2003, 03:00 AM
Again with the Shi applet. I'm determined to crank out 3 a week in Dec. now that I've got my handy dandy webcam reference back. Mirrors... were hell.
Not enough time to comment now, next post I will.
December 7th, 2003, 03:07 AM
told ya id do one a day :D
im gettin better i think...yay!
i like that last one Silvrain, cool mono blue
December 7th, 2003, 03:21 AM
well, better one than none...
regular? yeah, im regular. *cough*
scratch the blending on this one, went for something fast and fun in flash :)
this thread will never die, not when android throws in random comments and blasts out his amazing artwork on a daily basis. damn you inspire me.
Blackhawk, always a pleasure to see you in here, beautifull sketches, i love your rendering, the soft tonal work and the sharp contrast together as one! your head es verry big in the top one.
Nhi*, good start, the 3 tones is good advice. also, imo, you could use some sharp lines to bring it out of the blur.
asbestoshazard, great sp....really gives an impression of your shapes. *snatches and steals a smidgen of your tonal skills for self*
grooveholmes, does x mark the spot where the treasure is? i clikc and i click but nothing! lol ;) make eet vejrk! fix eet.! i want to see!
December 7th, 2003, 04:45 AM
Erm... I guess my server was out earlier, it should be working now.
That one is pretty cool Wazzzo :chug:
December 7th, 2003, 11:13 AM
thanks for the crit wazzo, now i look back, it is kind of fuzzy. I think i need to work on confidence in the lines.
Also, cool SP wazzo, i like the hard lines in yours, it makes it kind of cartoony and grumpy looking, itc cool.
Skank- brave of you to do big expressions, I think i'll try that, do you draw fast or just suffer the face cramps? :-p
Groove- that is a mighty face forest, could be nice to see the beard with lots of nice detail and highlights but the face quite subtle above it, looks good though, scanner trouble kill the contrast?
silvrain- nice expression there, and subtle shading too.
asbestos- paint over the bits you dont like, that is close to a great SP, you've got the detail that mine lack...
brokencow- you dont get a crit, its just too damn good...
everyone else, sorry, i just saw how many posts there are, you make me want to try again and again, good work :-) and i'm new at this so can't really crit much, other than saying what i like...
December 7th, 2003, 02:46 PM
i draw fast, but i dont hold the expression the whole time...i just amke a mental note of where the shadows are and put my face in the same place when i need to look at ti
December 7th, 2003, 03:56 PM
One hour. Kinda tired feel to it.
Brain: That is bloody scary. That's how I looked a year ago.
December 7th, 2003, 04:17 PM
An attempt at a different view... not sure if i'm happy with it or not... i tried doing it with just colours, but it went really really bad, so i restarted over the top of it and it worked out a little better, anyone got any advice on eyes and colours?
December 7th, 2003, 06:05 PM
Ni* - nice work it looks pretty good, i wish i could give you some advice about colours but i am not very good with myself. as for your eyes the only thing i can think of is take out the good ol' paper and pencil.... then practice practice practice. try using your pencil or measuring stick and find the different angles and see where things line up. that is the only real advice i can give i hope that is helpful to you.
klaivu - that is nice you look very menacing in that sp
wazzo - that is really cool!! it is very interesting and the colours are good too
skank - nice pose i like alot! everything looks pretty good, the only thing that bothers me is the neck seems to be thicker than it really is. good job
silvrain - that is really good!
nice work evryone keep them coming!!! this month is kicking some serious butt!!! :D
ok here is mine for the day this one is really quick but i had mucho fun doing it. if anyone has any thoughts, crits comments and all of the above i would apprecciate it :D
p.s. i am still working on the second one hehe
December 7th, 2003, 06:34 PM
hey, those are cool man
ya, i thought my neck looke thick too, but everytime i checked, thats how thick it was....lol (i work out everyday..might have sumthin to do with it) but i will definately pay close attention to everything else next time
December 7th, 2003, 09:22 PM
good to see so many people
guess u can tell school is out for some people i assume :)
jmac that muscle study is a great idea, where did you think of that? how do you guess your muscles, are you working from ref pic?
keep it up everyone.
Here are my latest 4, so far ive done one a day for december.7 down, 24 to go for December. Trying my best, one day at a time ;)
December 7th, 2003, 09:34 PM
skank - thanks for the compliment :D wow you must be one big dude :p
endregan - wow!!!! you are improving so much :D great work!!! i used a anatomy book to reference the muscles on my face. but the anatomy book only shows front and side so i just had to feel out some of the ones in the 3quarter view.
December 7th, 2003, 09:38 PM
Jmac, thanks for the crit, i'd return the favour but all i see for any of your posts is fortune city banners..... I'd like to see the muscle study since thats what i kinda started doing for my second post in this thread, i'd like to see your approach.
andregan- good work churning so many out, the structure of the face is all there too, only suggestion i'd make is on one of your next SP's, try not to put any lines down aside from very light construction lines, then just work with shadow, using the edge of a soft pencil to block in the shapes.
this is addictive, here's an eye study, anyone see any improvement? i think the eye is still a bit offline...
December 7th, 2003, 09:50 PM
Ni* - cool work i like the composition it is very interesting. about the links try right clicking on them and then selecting show picture. some times fortune city is bad like that but hey it is free.
December 7th, 2003, 10:22 PM
Just getting away from my failed attempts at realism and playing with PS brushes, I'm thinking its a bit crap really but, what the hell.... Android proved that you can make some lovely things with the comb brushes, I now know how diffucult that really is. ah well.... its all in good fun
Jesse- i think it's just me, other peope seem to be able to view your posts, my loss i guess. I'm using 250free.com, seems to work ok at the moment. on saying that, i just found it by chance and went with it, it may explode tomorrow..
December 7th, 2003, 11:24 PM
meh.. all of these are all so good.. sometimes when I look at these I feel so inspired, and then other times feel like I'll never be that good... but alas... I shall press on!
December 7th, 2003, 11:49 PM
Nunch - nice ones they look good. keep the faith you are and always will improve as long as you want it :D so keep them coming
Ni* - that sucks sorry man to bad about that. interesting sp i like the abstractness of it :)
so today i have been really motivated so i did this to try and understand how to paint digital sp's....
December 8th, 2003, 02:32 AM
I had so much fun with this one. Loud, angry Laibach helped the pose and the color scheme. Working with a palette minimum is challenging- but really fun.
J mac - That's pretty good! Try laying down one base color and then working color blocks in from that. I do like your color choices. The strictly anatomical work rocks.
Nunch - You're improving alot! The blue one is fantastic, and good perspective on the pencil one.
Ni* - Good stuff. It doesn't have to be tightened up to be a great SP exercise. Hell, I did an SP completely with the PSP leaf brush once. Keep playing with the brushes, you never know. I also like the close up.
endregan - good dedication!
klaivu - nice grayscale work!
wazzo - Flash? Damn, man. That turned out fantastic! I like the starkness, and the color scheme. That's the first one I've ever seen done in that particular media, rock.
Skank - Great job with those pencils!
asbestoshazard - you know I love it. I think I told you that repeatedly, earlier :D
December 8th, 2003, 05:20 AM
wow, love that last one there silvrain, very very cool, cool vector look to it.
December 8th, 2003, 09:53 AM
silvrain - thanks man i will try to do that tonight when i try again.
ok here is reall rushed on this morning, it is kind of crappy  i will comment later b/c i have jet onto to school....
December 8th, 2003, 01:40 PM
nice work Silvrain, its got real direction to it, i keep looking to try and see what you're about to bite a chunk out of :-p
Nunch- those are both good, keep at it, and if you enjoy the process, then the result is just a bonus :-p
Skank- cool shading on that one, i think i need to do a pencil one some time.... but i find it far more difficult, you can't go over mistakes as easily :-p
nothing to post yet today, i'll do one later tonight though.
December 8th, 2003, 06:08 PM
sadly, nothing to post, but silvrains picture was so damn good that i felt obliged to comment...
silvrain, FAWK! i really really dig that one!....the way it flows, and the pallete scheme. i was just waiting for a color one from you coz the blue ones were getting a bit stale.
I think i'll try something like that when i get some time soon. music deff. plays a big part in the process sometimes :D
i myself like using flash coz i really enjoy drawing 'viscerally' and fast....and then flash has the 'straighten' and 'smooth' function which i did cheat a smidgen and use on that last one to add some sharpness to the hair.
good work everyone!
December 8th, 2003, 08:29 PM
well its a bit late in the day but i did promise myself i'd do another one tonight. It's just a quicky, lines only as a change from trying to use tone. i'm finding it hard to move away from the docile 'staring at the mirror' face that i seem to adopt, next up i'll try some expressions...
I dont really like this one but, must press on...
December 8th, 2003, 08:44 PM
that last one looked too boring, so i coloured it... in a fashion.
EDIT>> umm.. sorry about his one, i just looked at it again and its shit, then it lead me to do another shit one. I'll save the stylised ones untill i can actually draw :p
December 8th, 2003, 10:46 PM

December 9th, 2003, 12:03 AM
I'm an alien! mrrrr... this one for some reason really creeped me out after I finished it, because it was late at night, and crazy stuff seems to happen at night
... it still creeps me out...
December 9th, 2003, 01:13 AM
Nunch - wow you are scary in that sp you look like a zombie or somehting.... :P
MCM - Damn that is good you have improved alot!! great job, how long did you spend on this one? also what brushes did you use? keep them coming
N - i like the lines on that one, it looks good. just keep that stylus a moving man :D
ok here is another one today, as i said o would do earlier. that crap i posted before  i dunno what happened just got rushed.
December 9th, 2003, 01:39 AM
HOLY CRAPTASTIC MINDCANDYMAN!
here, my fellow artisans, is the finest example known to me of perserverance paying off! i remember coming in here sometime last year, and seeing your stuff (mcm) and going, 'ok, hes starting at the base level, and hes putting in the effort' ... with obvious progress thru the year, finally, now, i look at this last SP, and i go 'DAMN! if i put in the effort he does, i could be that much better'
way to go man. WAY2GO
ps. dont stop now!
December 9th, 2003, 03:03 AM
Yea, very cool MCM... you've definitely grown.
December 9th, 2003, 04:34 AM
hey guys, sorry im coming in late this month. Here's one i spent about 30 minutes on last night. Joe by candlelight... how romantic....
There's a lot of good stuff this month! I'm really impressed with all of us! Good luck with finals for those of you guys who have 'em.
December 9th, 2003, 04:37 AM
Yet another try...I should get out of monochrome and attempt some color. I like my eyes in this one, though.
Skank :: The one with your tongue hanging out!...I should take a lesson and get more expressive!
Wazzo :: The color scheme is wonderful, I can't stop staring.
Klaivu :: Very clean, I like the subtle lighting
Ni* :: Nice job with your eye study.
Silvrain :: That one is beautiful, your colors...your expression...It's bold and stunning.
MindCandyMan :: That looks SO bloody good, the use of light especially.
BlankSlateJoe :: I'm always amazed by the amount of color people can pack into their work! It's gorgeous!
December 9th, 2003, 04:50 AM
ill do better tomorrow i promise...
December 9th, 2003, 05:22 AM
10 minutes before bed, first self portrait, didn't use a pic for reference, but I will next time.
December 9th, 2003, 10:28 AM
Valcon Jet - welcome aboard!
Skank - that is pretty good i like the energy in your lines they are expressive :D
asbestoshazard - that is really good! i like the way you did your eyes! but your nose looks a little genric "imo"
blankslatejoe - wow that is pretty good for 30 minutes keep them coming!!!
well this is my story.... i was doing an dsp and i was working on through breakfast like usual. it was coming along descent enough and than 40 minutes into it my computer decide to get sick and crash on me. Usually not a problem accept this time i didn't save what i was doing yet :( so now i have nothing right now..... ok what i am trying to say is i am doing one later and sorry about the story :xx:
ok so i was disappointed by what happened earlier, so i did this, i like it for the most part, but there are some issues and if anyone else see's anything could you be so kindly to point them out for me? thanks it appreciated.
December 9th, 2003, 12:38 PM
did this one today while there was some light coming in the window and the light in the room was on.
i'm not happy with the mouth and i've given myself that stupid look again...
valkon- i like that one, looks when you feel tired and you need to rub your eyes alot.
skank- i'm getting red 'x' for some reason, i'll come back and try later
asbestos- nice work, you've really got the hang of the monotone work. why not slap some colour on that one? i dare you
blankslate- very nice use of colour there, i like
nunch- that is scary! looks like there was the room light and a light under you too.
mindcandy- someone has been practicing... very nice. it has a noble kind of look to it. it is encouraging, thanks.
again sorry for the vague crits but i'm new to this so i can only say what i like,
December 9th, 2003, 03:48 PM
different view this time...
If anyone gets sick of looking at my ugly mug, let me know and i'll space out the posts a bit :p
tried not to make this one so fuzzy.
worked into it a bit more;
worked on this one a little more tonight and thought i'd post the update....
December 9th, 2003, 08:03 PM
Well, I really like the self portraits on here... nice.
and me before I cut my hair...
December 9th, 2003, 10:58 PM
Its been a long while since i posted last, And i think ive come a long way from when i last posted(If i can find the last or any i posted before ill post them)
So i hope i can do theses more often, if i dont have much home work and what not.
This was a quick one from a web cam shot, i got to get a small mirror still*shakes fist*:p
I know the eyes/mouth/eveything else is messed
but im happy for the 20 or some mins it took. Many things I have to work on.
MCM- WOW, you have really come a long way, good job man.
Endregan- Take what Android said to heart, I was just like you a little more then a year ago. Take your time and be patient.
December 9th, 2003, 11:09 PM
http://www.mindcandyman.com/jons_uploads/self portrait 2.jpg
I'm struggling...thank you to all who have said such kind words to me. It really helps me keep going...I have a hard time seeing my progress since I am in the midst of it so it really helps to get encouragement from you guys. All I see is my need to get better. At any rate thanks everyone so much it is much appreciated. As far as the amount of time...on the one before this one I spent about 1.5 hours or a little bit less on it. Somewhere around there...hard to remember. I use the smeary palette knife...the oil pastel...and a custom wash brush for most of my stuff. Hope that answers the question.
Thank you so much everyone!
December 10th, 2003, 12:49 AM
All these pieces are really impressive.
Here's my humble entry-
My first try at a self portrait, and first post in the SP threads.
Used Painter 7.
Time - about an hour and a half.
December 10th, 2003, 02:49 AM
very nice sps from everyone...
here is one from me. its a study for a litho i m working on now. i ll post the litho when i m done printing.
its actually reversed in real life. my scanner for some reason flips everything. oh well.
December 10th, 2003, 03:41 AM
nice one majin, i dig the single light source and evil eyes... keep em coming! I'm glad to see you progressing so much with painter.
dilation-, very strong sp, good rendering skills. Your site is at wm.edu... that's william and mary, right? Me,cotron and majin are all vcu-ers. It's good to see some other people from this state on the boards... there's not many universities here offering decent curriculums catering toward this kinda stuff. anyway, goodluck on the litho.
mindcandyman-man, ive been seeing your stuff on these boards for months.. if not longer.... (werent you one of the earlier people to start doing these things?)
Its good to see your development, you're really becoming adept.
December 10th, 2003, 04:25 AM
quick minimal, all i have time for tonight
this is also the first drawing ive ever doen with my new wacom..hehe
December 10th, 2003, 07:50 AM
another before bed...
December 10th, 2003, 12:53 PM
Todays was very frustrating...bleh
http://www.mindcandyman.com/jons_uploads/self portrait 3.jpg
December 10th, 2003, 01:13 PM
right, hello again everyone, well done on the work posted.
MCM- that one looks really cool actually, to me it screams frustration with the eye being blocked in like that, i think everyone who's picked up a pencil knows that feeling, one part just wont cooperate, keep at it,
silvrain- another nice one, i like the melodama/dispair feel to that one
Jook and skank- its weird going from the directness of a pencil drawing to using a tablet isn't it? jook, your first ones were nice, you should work into those a bit more,
dilation- excellent rendering there, only thing i'd say is that it looks a tiny bit cartoonish...
majin- cool, looks very moody and angry. i feel like that when my ribena box bursts too :-p
December 10th, 2003, 02:21 PM
majinpunisher - i like that it is very interesting :)
dilation - that is really good, i can't wait to see the litho
skank - good first try with your tablet, they are hard to get used to huh? i am still trying comfortable with it. keep it up!
jook - good attempt i think you should start to measure out your face and features more.
silvrain - how is there any debate whether you should post this or not.... this is awesome i am glad that you posted this. looks good :D
MCM - not to shabby i like it. you still are doing really great!
everyone is doing so well it is awesome, so keep them coming strong!!

December 10th, 2003, 02:26 PM
ok, im curious Jmac, are those headphones on your ear there?
hehe, at first i thought it was some kinda burly ass piercing, but im pretty sure theyre headphones huh..
im gonna try a full color SP with my tablet next...wish me luck! :chug:
oh, and McM: im gonna gank that hat ...hehehe
December 10th, 2003, 09:10 PM
just a sketch that got a bit of momentum. the faces are a little out of proportion but i wanted to see if i could manage different angles with a likeness. not sure if i succeeded... the front facing one was going wrong so i started with the structure and just kept drawing it with the accassional prod into my face to feel what shape it is...
December 11th, 2003, 06:31 AM
i haven't posted one of these here in soooo long. good to see this area is still goin strong, lots of new faces!! nice work everyone. my studies have been consuming me and today i handed in my final work so i figured i'd crank one of these out tonight. took me a little over an hour for this one. painted in photoshop cs
mindcandyman,...you've really come sooo far since i've last seen your work which was a few months ago....really great work bro.
December 12th, 2003, 12:07 PM
bit of a stall in the frequency of posts here just now... i've been trying to do some anatomy practice so i've not been on the SPs for the past couple of days but i fully intend to do even a quicky tonight.
zippzopp- nice, i like the composition, it really draws the attention to our right eye (your left) good work.
December 12th, 2003, 05:18 PM
Blah... stressful week.
December 12th, 2003, 09:13 PM
I was inspired by androids self portraits(which are awesome by the way)and I decided that I would do the same for at least 1 month. So I'll do a portrait a day for the next month. So far I'm up to day 4...anyways,here they are day1 and 2,beware,it aint pretty...http://forums.comicbookresources.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=1353452
ps.everybody did a great job on their self portraits this month,my faves are by keyth, jhibbs, brokencow, blackhawk, asbestoshazard,si lvrain,
December 12th, 2003, 09:14 PM
day 3 and 4...UGLY!
December 12th, 2003, 09:41 PM
promised i'd do one tonight... may not be great but it's here...
blackhawk- you do look stressed, sign of a good SP if you can tell your mood
the locker- those are nice, the get a bit cartoony but they are really expressive, good work
and yes, i found a new bush in PS...
also, i know this forum is for posting what you have rather than crits, but could someone give me a crit on the orange SP i did? i worked quite alot on it and i know it's not quite right but i'm not sure what's wrong....
December 12th, 2003, 11:20 PM
Ni* - you got it bud.....here comes some crits/help :D for the most part you have a good idea of what is going on with placement of your features. you have a good start there :D i think you should learn and develop form and structure of the head which you have already started. try doing some studies and reference work on some good old paper with your good old pencil. also use the light to see the planes of your face. you have a good start to everything, now you should start to draw your features more thoroughly. oh and this is what i tell everyone measure, measure, measure and than mark. it might sound tedious but it is worth it :P
you know what would be good is for you to do a sp on piece of paper (good working size) than next to it try to re-draw it but with your skull and then maybe another one with muscles and cartilage of the face. i hope this helps a little. it is kind of hard to crit the more loose sp's but i wll try :) good luck
Locker - those are really cool looking sp's they are really stylized :D on the side i think you should just post the images inside your post instead of linking. good work
BH - yay! you got another one in... looks good even though you are all stressed out. but it is good to see you drop by
ZZ - i actually remember your last post. it was before i started posting here :P welcome back and good work!
Skank - yeah they are headphones, i have 3 other roomates in my dorm room so i have toon them out sometimes...:D imagine if they were piercing they would be massive haha
OK i would be posting my sp's but my computers A-drive has been officially declare dead :realmad: so i can't post anything, because i have to transfer my files from my comp to a comp that has internet so i can post my art. oh well when i fix that i will post everything for you guys/gals.
December 13th, 2003, 05:55 AM
Some very nice work being done in here! Sorry for the multiple pics, but I've got a big pile of these and couldn't decide which to post.
December 13th, 2003, 11:39 AM
Jesse, thanks for the advice, its great to get a bit of clear direction instead of just doing what i enjoy over and over again, it's too easy to do that...
paper and pencil eh? i have a pencil here but i can't find the undo button on it :-p
nah but thats good advice, i have neglected pencil drawing since i got this tablet, only trouble is, i dont have a scanner to post and pencil ones so it may have to be shitty digi cam pics.
thanks again for the crit, i still cant see any of your posts and i'm keen to see everyone's, you can email me one or two if you want.
December 13th, 2003, 04:57 PM
Ni* -thanks man, yeah, they are a bit cartoony. I'm gonna do a months worth of portraits,so I'm gonna try different styles and methods with my portraits. I'll definitely do some more realistic ones soon. As for your sp,it was cool,it reminds me of those muscle charts, you know what i mean?the colors you used looks like it.
J.Mac-Thank you very much, glad you liked them. As for the links, yeah,i'll try to post pics instead of links from now on. The reason I didn't do it in the first place is because i've had trouble with my pics showing up on other fourms because i use tripod. But i'll try again.
Matt Dixon-like the sp's man. The first and last are the best ones. The last one has alot of life to it.
December 13th, 2003, 07:30 PM
if the image doesnt show, click this...
The image didn't show,so i took it out.Maybe cuz i use tripod.sorry bout that everybody.
December 14th, 2003, 01:57 AM

December 14th, 2003, 11:19 PM
jhibbs - that is awesome work!! it looks so cool and textured. yeah it has been busy for me too, but i squeeze sp's here and there but they come out pretty bad still. can't wait for finals to be over with. i hope youcan post some more of them, this place isn't the same with out you :D
Nunch - that is really nice looking, i like how you did it with shapes of colour.
The Locker - that is ok,it was a just a thought nothing to important. nice pen sp. glad to see you at it still. keep them coming
Ni* - no problem here to help who ever needs it, that is what this place is for :D
well i still have the dead computer drive sigh i am going to have to wait until i get home from school to post my sp's :xx:
December 15th, 2003, 01:47 AM
Jhibbs-very cool man. I wanna do some painting, but i don't really know how.
J.Mac-thanks man. I understand about posting a picture rather than a link.i'd also rather see a pic rather than click on the link.
anyways,here is DAY 6...
December 15th, 2003, 02:34 AM
THE LOCKER-that's about the worst reason ever to not paint. go get started. hell you think I know what im doing? who does? its a journey, and the sooner you start the better. money would be ALMOST an excuse, but if you can't afford oils start with acrylics.
J.Mac- thanks for the kind words, I'll try to post some more.
December 15th, 2003, 05:09 AM
not a lot of time lately. this one i did for class
December 15th, 2003, 05:58 PM
been missing ya guys.
dont worry i havent stopped.
been to busy to scan and post, but here are the latest.
so far ive kept my goal. little more than half the month to go. AJ: it really is taking it one day at a time.
these reflect how i feel really. some days i was tired and it showed. some days i got frustrated...and that shows too.
its hard andrew, i honour your committment. and all of those of you who do these, its not as easy as some may think!
hoping to start painting sps near the end of the month...
jhibbs- always love your paintings.. :)
groover - nice good to seeya around buddy :)
December 16th, 2003, 03:49 AM
heres day 7...kinda inspired by blood and water from vertigo...
jhibbs-hehe,yeah,that is a crappy reason for not painting. I will definitely get started painting soon...thanks
December 16th, 2003, 04:30 AM
MS PAINT BABY! me and a friend had an MS paint challenge... it actually wouldnt be so bad if it werent such a goddamn pain in the ass to change colors to the right ones.
December 16th, 2003, 11:50 PM
Today, I am a clown.
fun fun fun
December 17th, 2003, 12:25 AM
Groover McNab - nice to see your face around here again :D looking good there i like your colours. I hope we will be seeing more of you soon....
endregan - not shabby, i am glad to see you being so dedicated! There are ones where i can you can tell you weren't feeling and there are others that are better. none the less i can def. see an improvement!! some time you should take your very first sp and than put your newest sp next to eachother and see what an improvement you have made. good luck and keep up the hard work :D
THE LOCKER - your sp's are very interesting i like how they are expressive. the composition on that one is good "imo"
jhibbs - that is pretty cool looking. i don't think i would be able to do that! i tip my hat to you :D glad to see you posting even though you are busy right now.
Nunch - nice one, it is cool that you only did black and white. that is good practice.
sadly i am still unable to post any of my stuff :xx:
December 17th, 2003, 12:40 AM
really like your stuff jhibbs... good times..
these are some ugly colrs here...
December 17th, 2003, 01:57 AM
J-Mac - Thanks. I've still been looking this way even if I haven't been contributing and I have definitely noticed significant improvement in your sps. Keep it up.
Endregan - Thanks. It's good to see other people are drawing a lot :D
Btw, just throwing this out there, if anyone wants to do t-dome, holla at me :D
December 17th, 2003, 06:22 AM

December 17th, 2003, 07:00 AM
Wizard of KOZ
December 17th, 2003, 11:04 AM
Man it's been a while, working in the game industry is a very time consuming job...
December 17th, 2003, 12:19 PM
I feel your pain, Koz. ;) Nice colours in your SP. I'm really enjoying your series, Locker.
December 18th, 2003, 02:41 AM

and on that note - BLACKHAWK - your end is near... i'm not sleeping my friend.. i'm digging your grave :D :chug:
December 18th, 2003, 10:39 PM
Want to thank amphex, you emailed me and pointed it out to me what i wasnt seeing but shouldve... started seeing shapes and using less lines. have to measure better too.
thanks for you support guys... keep up your work. perhaps when my pencil skills are down ill get back into painting! :)
What i see is i need to keep reading shapes, measuring and now start adding more value..
December 19th, 2003, 06:23 PM
Don't worry Oblio, I'm doing my work in the background, I'm going to crush you :D
December 21st, 2003, 09:33 AM
December 21st, 2003, 11:27 AM
appologies for being so lazy over the past few weeks, i've been shamed by the people still posting loads of good work. i started playing about with painter classic and after some frustrating experiments with it, i'm actually starting to like it.
here's an attempt which i stopped before i made it too muddyhttp://nirvine.250free.com/SPpaint5.JPG
I am without wacom again, i gave back the one i borrowed but santa is bringing me one, well, some cash to help me buy one :-p
December 22nd, 2003, 06:17 PM
seth- awesome expression! love it
BH- hey over there in the corner! wicked cool as usual :)
req- quite the old one eh
Well its final- i need to smack myself till i push values more
December 22nd, 2003, 06:42 PM
Let's keep it up guys, this section has slowed as of late.
December 22nd, 2003, 09:50 PM
blackhawk (nice painting as ever), you're right, although its christmas we should still try to keep this thread going after such a good start.
I think it would be good to each suggest a different approach for eachother to try, to force us all to push ourselves in a different direction, what does everyone think? i know i could use some direction, i'm meaning like doing a different side or working in a certain colour or greys or something.
endregan- yours are getting better in terms of the shading and values, the lines you drew to make up the face at the beginning of the month are dissappearing, good stuff. maybe try using a really soft pencil or charcoal, or you could work more into an existing portrait to increase the contrast a bit, even an ink wash?
December 23rd, 2003, 03:46 AM
I really like your stuff Blackhawk, especially this last one.
December 23rd, 2003, 05:55 PM
December 24th, 2003, 02:54 AM
Here's my self portrait. Its the one from the what does everyone look like thread and the self portrait thread in the middle class, redone with a better smile and different style in photoshop six. Took about ten minutes to redo, original took more than that, about an hour. Redo looks better.
Here ya go, any suggestions? Im an open suggestion box here.
December 24th, 2003, 05:02 AM
