that ostrich-horse strikes me as quite sinister. (not trying to be offensive, btw - the horse's head just reminds me of a big beak)
nice one! :)

Thanks, :)
but "ostrich-horse", whats that?
plaf
December 1st, 2003, 07:30 AM
ah curse it, you beat me to it :)
i was just talking about the shape of the horse's head. the pointy-ness of it + the eyes made me think of an ostrich for some reason.
hm... is it just me?
love the lil horse on his helmet, btw. ;)

Thank god for www.dictionary.com
Ostrich
"A large, swift-running flightless bird (Struthio camelus) of Africa, characterized by a long bare neck, small head, and two-toed feet. It is the largest living bird."
ok, now i get it. Yea, i suppose it looks like an ostrich. :)

OLSEN - It's really great. My favorite DSG submission to date. I love the way you subtly mixed in the eye color in the rest of the piece , it really unifies it. I could go on but I'll just say 'wow'.

The Rook is the "Tower" or "Keep" that guards the back row and the forward row. Just think stronghold or castle.

don't talk about it like it can't hear you
the rook has feelings you know...

Ok, now don't get ! But this is an older one that I poster at sijun. Guess it could be used as a chess knight concept... YES NO RECYCLELING ART IN THE DSG, but I just had to :p MUCH inspired by mullins, and andy nemo's style and brushstrokes.
OLSEN: very cool.

In the ancient Persian style of chess, the King was a General, the Knight was a Camel Bowman (camels being considered faster and more durable than horses in the desert terrain), and the Rook was a fanatic (like the european "berserker") represented by a warrior drinking a bowl of his enemy's blood.
I guess war was some pretty serious shit back in the day.
Great stuff on here so far. I hope I have time to contribute today... :(

Heya, I try to do these every once in a while, but I usually don't bother uploading.
However, I think this one conveys the original idea quite fine, so here goes. Btw, I'm aware of the errors I made in aligning the features, most notably her left eye, but I gotta go to bed, it's getting late...

Theres this thread on a site about Introspection, Your Life as a chessboard (http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/index.php?fn=view_thread&t=83216&hl_set=introspect%20Introspection) , which I found really interesting. Kinda based my image off that.
http://members.lycos.co.uk/vbcserenity/art/meh.jpg
I made myself as the queen. Parts of it represent myself. The reason for the mask on the face and the weapons is because sometimes I go into battle blind, but never unarmed. The clouds are there because thats where my head is most of the day. Things like that. Haha I didn't go very deep in this one. I wish I had time to color it, that would help a lot with the introspection. Haha now I sound conceded. :P

hey guys, great stuff. I really wanted to do one too, but I'm pretty tired right now and all I wanna do is watch TV. Monday's after a long weekend are always very tiring for some reason. Anyways, here's some feedback.
Klon: cool idea, making the rook a guy but theming his armor and stuff like a tower. the helmet is cool. proportions seem to be pretty good, though his left foot is too far forward. considering it was done with a mouse I can't really criticize it for being too sloppy, after all it is hard enough to start from scratch sketching with a tablet. I would suggest practicing more on coloring with the mouse and using traditional methods to do your line work. As far as I'm concerned noone should have to draw with a mouse. Do you have access to a scanner or digital camera?
Faxtar: I like your rook too! the face is great, you should give the rest of his body the same treatment.
Bretton: love your rook. My guess is the legs were giving you trouble? I would finish it. It's a fun pic. The anatomy on your second looks pretty decent, aside from the torso twisting a bit unnaturally and the backwards hand. Also you can see too much of the bottom of his chin.
brianl: you have great line quality. gotta love mel brooks too. it's good to be the king.
fresh27: I laugh out loud every time I look at your pic. I hope that was what you were going for... hilarious.
ok, everyone keep it up. sorry again I didn't post, in the time it took to write this I guess I could have, but giving feedback is good too. :fruit:

There's my contribution, be it ever so humble. Anyway, these guys caught my eye:
Klon: I like your basic design; it's really good for using a mouse. I am so slopy with my mouse (as you can see above.)
Faxter:Your Rook is awesome, especially the face. If you flesh out the rest of the body as you did the face, i think it could turn out really nice.
Those are just the ones I had some comments on; there are good ones throughout the thread. it is good to be back perticipating again after being away. Good jobs all around.

Hmm... mine's a bit vague. Okay... It's very vague.
But hopefully the chess connection will become somehow apparent later. It's cropped a bit, actually. ...I'll probably have her hovering over a chess landscape.
So... this is a "w.i.p." if I'm able to extend my attention span past a single sitting.

Don't worry, MG - you're not the only one who doesn't get many comments. ;)
I know this is stating the obvious, but look at all the stuff you get from participating in the DSG; you have a reason to keep that pencil hand waving every day, and you're presented with subjects you might not ordinarily tackle.
Beyond that, you also get to see how everyone else deals with the topic; you can learn as much from looking at someone else's work and considering how you would have done things differently, or what you might change to improve their picture as you might from crits on your own pieces. There's a great bunch of artists contributing to the DSG - even if they're not offering comments on your own work, their crits make good reading.
Constructive criticism is a great way to improve your work, and positivie feedback is a marvellous motivator but, at the end of the day, they're just other people's opinions. If you really want comment, ask for it in your post, and draw people's attention to an anything in your image that you're not sure about. It can be very difficult to look at a sketch and say 'this is wrong', 'that's too blue' etc...
I know it's disheartening when you look down a post of comments on everyone's work except your own, but it shouldn't matter. Do this for yourself, and critique your own work as harshly as you can..!
Draw on, brother! :D
