Painter colorize blending mode

hi everyone
I hope this is the right forum for my question

which is regarding corel painter "Colorize" blending mode.
it's similar to the "color" mode but it's the results I get from it are much better. it changed the way I paint, now, I paint in white&black to set the values right and not worrying about the colors at all. then I just add a new layer and set its mode to "colorize" and viola! very quick way to turn the B/W painting into colors.

I know that "color" mode, which is available in almost all painting programs, does the same thing ( sort of ), but it doesn't look as good as the result I get from "colorize". I know it works differently coz in painter there's "color" mode also.

can some one explain to me how does it work or how can I achieve the same result in PS or in GIMP coz I use linux a lot.

cIIIz, have you tried out color mode in Photoshop? It works differently (in RGB mode) to color mode in Painter, and should be even better than colorize in Painter.

These three differ primarily in the kind of measure of "value" they take from the background layer to combine with measures of hue and saturation from the foreground layer. Colorize in Painter uses the L of HLS, which is not a very good measure of perceived lightness: you may have noticed especially that painting in yellow tends to lighten the greyscale values, and painting in deep blue tends to darken values. Color mode in Photoshop uses the luma (Y) of the background, which is a much better measure of lightness, though not quite as good as the L of Lab. A mode that used the latter would be ideal for your purpose, but I don't know of any (I'm using CS2 though, so I may well be out of date). You'll doubtless find more up-to-date info on the Photoshop forum (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=78).

briggsy@ashtons : wow man thanks for the great technical info :D really helpful to know what's really going on there. I might be able to make my own blending mode in GIMP since it's open source.

about ur question, yeah I tried color mode in PS, I use PS CS so I'm the one out of date here, I dunno if there's any changes to how color mode works in CS. to clarify I've added some pictures. I like how Painter X Colorize mode deals with the highlights.

again thanks man and what I weird coincidence :D I was reading in ur site about the dimensions of color yesterday, I haven't finished it yet but it's really interesting and great effort, so thanks for that also.

in my quest of finding the equivalent of Painter's Colorize, I found this plug-in for GIMP, it's really interesting. As the pictures below shows, u just draw small strokes and the color of this stroke will be applied to what's underneath it. it's simple and amazing.
