The Massive Black art book is done and will be released on Jan. 13. Ballistic did a great job on the printing and the quality is awesome. More info will be available here on ConceptArt.Org very soon. The book is a black, hard cover slip, and is coffee table quality. There are about two hundred pages of art and cool stuff. It contains seven hundred images (Illustration, concept, 3D, animation, and intellectual property), many of which have never released on www.conceptart.org or anywhere else.

If you are interested in picking up Massive Black: Volume 1, it can be reserved by emailing us directly. Please contact scooter@massiveblack.com and put *MASSIVE BLACK Vol. 1<<<(VERY IMPORTANT!!)* in the subject line. Scott is our Producer and will help you personally. (Please give him a few days to respond as it is very close to the holidays and we are out of the office till the fifth of January)

Here are the three offers available.

Go to http://dvd.massiveblack.com/ and click on the downloads section to see a list of available titles for you to choose from or to learn more about our downloadable tutorials taught by some of the best artists working in the industry today!
*NOTE! PART 1 and PART 2 OF ONE ARTISTS DOWNLOAD ARE CONSIDERED 2 DOWNLOADS!*
*
*
We will get the books out the door as soon as they are released mid-January. Volume 1 is here, done, and ready to go!

Happy holidays and thanks for the support,

I'm definitely buying this! But I want Whit Brachna's speed painting videos. The second part isn't out yet, can that one still be ordered?

The free downloads with the book are of those released as of today. Dec 21.

Thanks a lot too. We have to find ways to support this site and this is one of the ways we are doing it.

Wow this sounds so glorious. I don't know, maybe its just because I was born in 81, but that MB Cock is still one my favorite designs of all time. Props to whoever came up with it. That painting by Nox is way cool too, I remember really enjoying that one the first time I saw it. I think I'm going to have to put in an order with Santa Claus. My mom has been harassing me for gift ideas anyway, and this one seems way classier than a gift certificate.

Thanks for putting this all together. Very inspiring :)

Oh well, I'll buy the second part later. Throwing in the digital downloads was very cool, I'm really impressed with the value since art books are always so expensive.

Hey Jason

I just sent my email to scooter to reserve my copy of the LE. Will there eventually be some kind of online checkout where we can put in our charge info?

On a personal note, I've been waiting forever for you guys to do something like this. This is such an awesome thing you've put together.

What's a realistic response time, for those of us who have sent e-mails?

I don't want to be bombarding anyone with any unnecessary repeat e-mails if I can help it so an ETA on typical response time would be useful.

Hi scott, just a few stupid questions if you don't mind:

1. How much would international shipping cost for the limited edition? (New Zealand)

2. Ballistic usually publishes their books in hardcover and softcover formats, and then theres a "Limited Edition - for the serious art collecter" version which is bound in black leather with gold metallic embossing and all that jazz. I'm not sure if this is the case for the MB book but, I'm guessing this CA limited edition be just the hardcover version?

3. Final question will be the most stupid (sorry!), where it says "Get your original art grab bag here." does that mean theres an actual "bag" that comes with it, or is it just a figure of speech?

Thanks for your hardwork, hope you guys have a great christmas :)

the book, as said, is a hard cover slip style

no clue on intl. shipping. Scott will take a look next week after the holidays.

For those of you who already have downloads & a free download from MB would be redundant:

"Donate" your download back to MB so that they can give it free to someone who doesn't have the money to afford buying a download.

I plan on doing this with one of my downloads as there is only one on the current list that I really want - unless, of course, Jason makes his year-long awaited colour video available.

I think ill get the signature edition.Just one silly question, where does the book get signed?

Id rather have it signed on some blank page in the back rather then the cover or over some drawing.

Zirngibism
December 23rd, 2008, 02:41 PM
Another question about the signature edition: How many signatures are there?
Is it the whole Massive Black team? Is it the signatures of all the people who have their work in their book?

And while I am trying to assume they're originals, I have heard of books where people get an attached sheet with printed signatures... so the confirmation might be nice.

Jason Manley
December 23rd, 2008, 03:14 PM
original sigs...and it is the majority of the team SF signing them. We do not have the books in Shanghai/BKK so team SF is doing the signing and artwork inside.

Hey Jason, I'm cross posting this from the other thread because it seems like you'd know the answer, what with being in charge and whatnot.

"So will part 2 [of Whit's Speedpainting Series] be included with the rest if I wanted to choose it as one of my free downloads for buying the Massive Black Vol. 1 book? Just asking since those freebies only apply to those currently released, but that statement was made a few days before part 2 was released. Just checking. Also, I already bought part 1 and it was amazing, so even if I can't get it free, I'll be buying part 2 anyways "

I'd love to order, but it depends on the international shipping rate to Germany. I hope the early bird offer won't be over before this is sorted out, since quite some people have been asking for this.

Another hint: customs rates from the US to Germany are pretty high - it would be great if the declaration could be "present" or "gift" because in this case they won't charge customs...

This doesn't always seem to work trough. I believe it depends by what's on the shipping box. For example, if its from a company with its logo on the shipping box, then the chances are high they see trough your deceleration message and just treat it as import.

I read couple of months ago that a new law would be effective in 2008 December in EU. According to the new law you won't have to pay the taxes if the importable package is worth less than 150 euros (it was 22 euros before). Also the new 150 euro limit applies only if one of the parties is a company. So if Jason sent you the book, you would have to pay the customs taxes, but if Massive Black sent you the book, you wouldn't.

I think the law became effective on 1st December.

I'm not sure at all though, correct me if I'm wrong.

For people who want to pay with Paypal: Paypal has a feature that allows you to generate a temporary credit card for you to order things online using funds from your paypal account. I think you have to download their little toolbar application, but it seems to work pretty well.

Boom baby, one Limited Edition Art GrabBag ordered. I had originally wanted just the signature, but after seeing that only 100 of the Limited's would be made, I had to jump all over that. Considering I'm getting 30 bucks worth of free downloads, it's really only costing me 90 bucks, which is well within my spending range.

Maybe this will convince me to actually post drawings and stuff in these forums, since now I'll be reminded of it every single day for the rest of my life, since that artwork is gonna be framed and stuck right over my computer.

I am such a dork. In my excitement to order the book, I glazed over reading one of the most important lines. I forgot to put which free downloads I wanted in the notes section. I already e-mailed scooter about it, but I figured I'd post it here since it seems like Jason is still active despite the holidays and the rest are probably out till Monday or so.

Is there a way to fix this problem or am I out of luck?

Haven't heard anything from scooter (sent 2 mails 2 days ago), I know you guys are very busy and are probably flooded with mails, but I only have today to order and I really don't want to miss out on the Limited Edition.

Especially with the usual rarity freaks you get with these deals who order 20 in one go to put them for twice as much on ebay.

Also paypal's virtual credit card service was a beta program and has ended a while ago, thus disabling any chance of getting the LE edition quickly.

Please sort out the paypal issue fast! thank you!

I'm not sure at all though, correct me if I'm wrong.

h2rra, thanks for making this clear, I did not know this. However, the shipping rates to Germany/Europe question seems still to be unsolved.... :(

For people who want to pay with Paypal: Paypal has a feature that allows you to generate a temporary credit card for you to order things online using funds from your paypal account. I think you have to download their little toolbar application, but it seems to work pretty well.

That's how I paid, at least.

That's how I paid as well. For windows users paypal has a downloadable plugin and for Mac users you just go to the secure card section in your paypal account and get a temporary credit card. I got my conformation that my payment was received, so it worked.
I'm just wondering when I'll have access to the free downloads, when the book is shipped or before? DBMiller

Well, I sent a message to scooter asking what's going on - since I hadn't received any email about my reservation - and he sent me a reply saying he sent the email, perhaps it got filed under junk, and that the limited edition was gone.

I'm not happy.

So, I just sent him a response saying to cancel my reservation request and perhaps I'll purchase the paperback version someday.

At least now I don't have to worry about how to pay them.

I sent scooter A mail an hour ago informing him in a nutshell that I am not happy how things went.

They should have waited untill everything was figured out, so the creditcard users could not cut the line like now.

Hello Scooter here,

I am deeply sorry that it took so long to figure out the paypal issue. It is available as a form of payment as of 5 minutes ago please follow the links and instructions that you have been emailed and you will be able to order if you still choose to do so. Hey Scooter, did you guys ever work out what would happen to us poor saps that forgot to put our download titles in the notes section? I sent an e-mail about it in December and posted it in here and haven't heard anything back about the issue.

The only reason I'm even bringing it up again is because today my credit card got hit for the book, so it was just a reminder for me to check on this. Since the downloads were a big chunk of why I decided to splurge on the book, I really don't want to miss out on them.

Hey scooter here,

I'm fixing shipping and missing download issues as I go. If you do not receive an email from me I'm pulling your DL info out of your original email inquiry of the book. if you are reading this and you haven't reserved yet please put the down load info in the email AND the comments section of the order form or else I will say :wtf: and my brain will explode all over one of your favorite concept artists.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Another thing to keep in mind regarding shipping issues. If the information is wrong then the total you were charged might not have included shipping costs. please be aware that your total will go up in line with USPS rates to ship to your country.

Thanks!

I noticed that my order had $0.00 for shipping when I placed it and thought I'd have to contact someone to get it sorted, however the total had went up ($22.80 USPS to UK) the next time I checked so all was OK.

I think I've ordered art book. I paid with PayPal without credit card. I wasn't sure what to do with USA type address form. It doesn't support my country ZIP code (there we use one dash, XX-XXX), so I removed this dash. Also, I had to write state name, otherwise I couldn't order. Then, again, we don't have states, instead there are provinces (I'm not sure if it's correct), so I put my province name. It's my first time I order myself from foreign country, so I hope there won't be any problems.

Anyway, has anyone from Europe received art book? How much time shipping has taken?

Shipping of the art book doesn't start until the 13th so no one has received it yet :).

I've imported loads of stuff over the years, and so long as the item's been packaged properly (so it can't get bent/bashed about etc..) it's been fine so don't worry about it.

I didn't mean about the "health" of book. I was worrying about shipping address, which was filled in USA-type form. I guess the person who sends books will figure it out, but who knows?

About responds, I didn't get any of them for few weeks, but it's nothing weird, as it's too much for them to handle smoothly, and add to fact they had vacations, which made things more messier.

Status: Electronic Shipping Info Received

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on January 16, 2009 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

Just got home from lunch, and saw a package sitting there. I can honestly say I've never been so excited to see a massive black cock! Thanks so much guys! I'm totally over the moon!

I wouldn't worry if you haven't gotten an e-mail of delivery or anything. I never got one and the book is already here. I wouldn't stress, Jason wasn't kidding about them arriving any day. Now if I can just get a hold of those downloads. ;)

So I decided to upload my Limited Edition sketch to show others what they're missing.

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/1314/50dollarsketchyn5.png

Cool doodle? Hell yes. Do I think it was worth the extra 50 bucks? Ehh, not so much.

The book is amazing and the extra $10 for signatures was a great deal, but this seems like a rip-off. It's on a tiny piece of paper that will probably just get lost, since I have no where to put it and I surely can't frame it.

So for all those who are sad they are missing out, don't worry, you're not.

Excellent book though, I am glad I got it 100%.

If anyone wants to buy this drawing for $40, I'd be willing to let it go and you can pretend you got the limited edition. It even comes at a discount!

Got mine today- freakin' amazing book, extremely inspiring and well worth the price :) Really like the sketches I got by Whit too- that completely made my day to not only get the book but to find the sketches there- so well done.... (thanks Whit!) and thanks again to all you at MB for doing this up

I'm not making any money from the books I signed, or the ones that have my sketch on it. I used my spare time to contribute to this whole thing, and I feel disappointed that you're missing the bigger picture here. I apologize that youre not happy with the sketch you received, but I wish that having an original sketch of one of the artist in the book would suffice.

would you have been able to frame the sketch if I drew it on the book?

Jason Manley
January 27th, 2009, 10:40 PM
I just wanted to say that Rich's work has tremendous value regardless of whether or not it is small. He has been responsible for many designs of key characters on that famous upcoming robot film sequel y'all know is coming out, as well as work on many of the biggest games in the business. He has done concept work for well over a hundred companies now and is and was MB's first full-time artist. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, EA, Activision, Take 2, Hasbro, and many others buying his small but beautiful sketches would entirely disagree with your summation on the value of his work. His sketches have helped define some of the biggest entertainment projects on the planet. This does not just apply to Rich.

The books with sketches are limited edition. Hold on to it and see if it has value for yourself. Hell, I would be doing copies from the thing...but that is just me.

Got mine today, it'a amazing. thanks to Jason and the MB crew for putting the time into making this book, i know it's a thousand little things that need to be done to get it onto peoples doorsteps. The sketch, Well, i'm going to just go out on a limb and say that i'm pretty sure i got the most badass sketch... there, i said it. It looks like a Jason Chan sketch but i'm not 100% sure, they didn't sign it. I hinted around that i like my chicks with big.... things..... and you guys didn't disappoint! =) Ok, Since these badboys are sold out, who wants to cough up 1000 bucks for mine? =) well worth it!!

RockNRoll! Got mine a little after lunch today and i had to wait like five hours before i was even able to look at it and i was not disappointed! But the quality of the materials is such that i'm paranoid about getting my grubby little fingerprints all over it; fortunately i have boxes of gloves a plenty at work. Thanks a lot fellas (and ladies!) It looks great, and will no doubt be feeding my hungry eyes for the next few weeks. Cheers!

I don't know what the guy said abouth Rich's sketch but I can figure out from Jason's and Rich's reply that he wasn't satisfied. That makes me mad a bit that one of the 100 limited copies got to someone who can't appreciate it just because he had the money to buy it. I missed the limited 100 by a day or two. I was waiting for a paycheck. I would honestly kill to get Rich's original pencil sketch even if it was the size of a match box. But I have to hope to get my hands on limited copy of Vol2 if there's ever going to be such thing.

Question ... is the Volume 1 subtitle just a place-holder for possible sequel in far far future, or are you guys actually working now on part two that can come out in 2009 or early 2010?

PS. I also got my Greg Manchess link yesterday and the video is great, I love it how calm and centered he is while painting and sharing his wisdom. He really seems like he's 100% focused on his work. I admire that a lot - really inspiring lesson.

Sorry, i didn't mean to imply that they actually took my request, it could have been a coincidence. In my order comments i hinted around as to what would be an ideal sketch, nothing in particular. I'm guessing that it was a mere coincidence that i ended up with a sketch that matched my "hint". Sorry Jason if you're now getting an influx of requests! my bad.

I really hope you guys don't take that shit to heart. If it's necessary for you to have to explain the value of a sketch from an artist, or justify the level of the artists skill, well, then they just aren't getting the big picture. Paraphrasing what someone once said, "Don't pay any attention to critics. Don't even ignore them."

Peantoo
January 28th, 2009, 11:54 AM
I wasn't even criticizing the art...it is very cool, I just misunderstood what I was getting and that it was just the style of the artist. I am very pleased with my sketch and I now hold it in a new light. It was my mistake for expecting something else, and I have already apologized to the artist and Jason. After looking up the artists work in the book, it has become a lot more clear that what I have is indeed amazing.

Just to be clear, not once did I criticize the actual artwork. I was upset about the size, because I had improperly assumed the sketch would be the same size as a page in the book. I don't know why I thought this, but after having received an explanation, I have retracted my negative comments.

The book is great, Massive Black is great, my sketch is great, and the artist that made it is great. I have zero regrets about my purchase and feel sorry for all those who weren't able to get in on this.

For me, my situation is different:

Status: Electronic Shipping Info Received

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on January 16, 2009 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later.

According to my email: A package with a Click-N-Ship label created on usps.com containing the following information is scheduled to be shipped on 01/16/2009.

I have been speaking with Aaron who has been very helpful since I also reported another issue to him. I wanted to put a word out as a person who has a situation with shipping your staff has been very good. The only slight problem for me (which is a minor annoyance) is I'm getting nagged by Yahoo to rate you, when I haven't received the product. I'll be sure to put in my honest opinion when it happens.

Again, thank you and I'm looking forward to the book. I've already seen it in store as previously posted.

My apologies.

I believe I should clarify. I had spoken with Aaron about other issues (and asked him about the book while he was helping me with that issue) I was having and I wanted to put a good work that Aaron went above and beyond in helping me than what was expected of him. I didn't want to imply he was the contact, since Jason Manley and Scooter have both said previously to contact Scooter for book issues.

I just wanted to name Aaron for his help, not list him as a contact for the Massive Black books. I think he should be thanked publicly for his help.

Please do as mentioned in this thread and contact Scooter.

But something piqued my interest. On page 78 one of Whit Brachna's paintings is described as "...for the Massive Black Production Art series of digital tutorial videos." What is that? Any way to get my hands on it?
