Hi CA :yayca: . My name is Emil and i have finally decided to start a sketchbook :)

GO TO LAST PAGE FOR NEW STUFF...

---edit 18. feb.---
moved the pictures from my first post to my second post, so i can change the picture being showed in the sketchbook dropdown menu.

Oh... and perhaps i should add a little info about myself :blahblah:. I'm 21 years old, and i study computer science (:geekg:) and business administration. Drawing and painting is my spare time hobby :)

btw... critique, comments, suggestions etc are VERY welcome :D

--- edit 2. June ---
Got my degree in computer science and business administration with a average grade of 10,1 (danish scale, its kinda like a B) :) - daily updates from now on

--- edit 20. dec 09
I guess it is about time that i update this first post with some up-to-date information. I'm now taking a Master in Software Development at the IT-university of Copenhagen. And i'm almost done with my first semester there.

---original post:----
I began drawing a few months ago - and this is my progress so far:
PS: most of the drawing are of statues.

Hi there Fumble! Welcome to CA.

You started with drawing few months ago? You´re showing incredible control over your pencil for that! Most of those studies are looking good, of course, there are some anatomy flaws. I would suggest to take a look at some Loomis and Bridgman books for that.
Great start anyways, show some more! I would also like to see some work from your mind. Smile! :teeth:

Emil_J.
December 20th, 2008, 08:49 AM
Mr. Smile: Thanks for the comment :). I have just downloaded Loomies and Bridgeman - so i will start doing some studies soon

I did my first digital painting about 3 weeks ago - an apple.
My brother then suggested that i should start by doing black and white:traced:
All of them was done from photo reference:

Great work on all of the studies, perticularly like your heads! On top of the suggestions by Mr.Smile i'd recommend Gottfried Bammes book Die Gestalt des Menschen, it's in german so you might not be able to read it but it has some great drawings. :D

^Some examples of what you'll find in it.

You JUST started drawing a few months ago?!
Did you JUST start painting as well?!
Please say yes, because if this is beginning work,
you're going to be most excellent!

Emil_J.
December 21st, 2008, 11:44 AM
Imaginary: Thanks :). I will take a look at the book, i know a little bit of German , but then again, a picture says more then a thousand words :P

oomgawa: Thank you :bashful:. I must confess though, most of my drawings look quite bad, i chose the best ones for my first post.

Todays update:

If you've only been drawing for a few months then you are doing extremely well. Keep on those statue drawings, they are great exercise. Good Luck.

Wow, man, your greyscale ref-paintings are doing great! You seem to learn fast :) The old fiddler is my favourite so far ... amazing how despite the fuzzieness of the portraits in general the photographic feeling still comes through in the faces!

Keep it up!

Drawings from the 28. jan.
I went to a museum and drew some busts and statues. Damn, shading is not easy.. :P. Does somebody know some good exercises for shading and values?

Emil_J.
January 30th, 2009, 07:04 AM
taadaa !

two heads from yesterday - trying to get better values
I also did a digital painting thingy... but I'm not uploading that one - it failed a bit too much :P

January 30th, 2009, 08:06 AM
Wow, you're lines are already getting a lot better! And I like the digital stuff

Emil_J.
January 31st, 2009, 01:23 PM
AvisNocturna: wow you really think so?, thanks! :) I'm also feeling a bit more confident when putting down my lines (or maybe I'm just wishing :P)

Sketches from today:
1) some poses
2) I tried a new thing today, blind contours. I read about it in "Drawing on the right side of the brain". It was really a fun experience, i could almost feel the left side of my brain shutting off :P
OOOo and if you are wondering what the hell those lines are supposed to be..... its my left hand ...:wtf:
3) Bridgeman
4 + 5) Two heads from reference.

Hi Fumble, good improvement in your work! The digitals pop out. Might have to do with the pencil you work with: try working with a softer pencil to get some more contrast (or adjust the levels in Photoshop). Scott Robertson has some nice DVD's on values and rendering. If you ever get the chanct ot see them,...
Keep going!

Meaisín
February 6th, 2009, 07:52 PM
Nice work Fumble! I agree that you can see an improvement in your work already. I really like your collections of quick poses and anatomical studies. Your mark seems to have that confidence; you're not repeating you're lines much at all, which looks good, and you can definately 'feel' movement. I really enjoy seeing the 'Bridgman' work clearly adding to the 'pose' work as well.
Your digital painting is very impressive as well. I really hope I can learn to utilise Photoshop some day soon.
Keep it up! Great progress/quantity/quality here.

Emil_J.
February 7th, 2009, 01:21 PM
Bartovan: Thanks for the reply! :) I will try to use softer pencils ( usually don't go lower then 2B  ). I will also take a look at those DVD's.

Francisck: Thanks! :D

Today's update: not really that much.
- Some doodles
- A quick MMA study

Todays update:
1+2) Poses

3) Loomies Heads

4+5) Statue drawings
(the last one is an update of a drawing i uploaded previously. Don't think I'm gonna finish it though, want to do something new now)

6+7) Some random heads where i try to put on values without reference

February 21st, 2009, 05:12 PM
Good work on the b&w studies, really digging the violinplayer and the boxers. :)

Emil_J.
February 22nd, 2009, 12:48 PM
Imaginary: Thanks :D. I do find pencil drawing a lot more difficult than digital painting. *Note to self:* devote A LOT more time to pencil drawing/shading.

Inkfish: Thanks Inkfish!!

Todays update:
An Indian chieftain. Took me about 4 hours to make. It's mostly from imagination, but some photos of old Indians help me along the way.
My initial sketch was supposed to be an old chieftain, but when i started shading him he became younger and younger :dur: .

February 24th, 2009, 10:24 AM
Hi Fumble :), your digital stuff is getting better and better, but I suggest you do some perspective studies too. It will help you a lot.
You can start with drawing primitives. Try to simplify your drawings (heads,...).

Emil_J.
February 28th, 2009, 05:11 AM
Lyno: Perspective studying sound like a good idea - ill give it a try. Thanks :)

Considering that i haven't updated i quite a while, this update is poor :( - Tried to do more drawing, but baaah not enough time.

Some poses, heads, a cloth study and a speedy.

Emil_J.
March 1st, 2009, 03:59 AM
today's update:
- Some poses
- Heads
- a MMA study
- A WIP of a ork Driva Boyz. It is done completely from imagination. I'm having a lot of trouble with it though. First off i dont know if the perspective is good or not. Secondly i think it looks kind of "flat" :(. I'm pretty much stuck, help! :O

:O For a guy who just started drawing, your heads are amazing, mate. I love how confident your lines are, and your shading is really coming along. Keep updating!

George Abraham
March 5th, 2009, 09:13 AM
Dude you are doing all the right stuff, your tonal studies are amazing keep it up. You have inspired me to do more myself.

Just some stuff I noticed that we have in common that you could chew on:
Using an erasor in drawing helps with focus, it has the effect of wanting you to draw stuff right the first time around, at first you use it alot but less and less as you get more confidence, Digital has the same effect as you can erase overpaint etc, untill things look right. if you force dicipline on yourself it will improve but you have to balance fun and exploration in there or it won't be that much fun.

Secondly the digital media has another effect of showing you correct tonal relationships, notice how dark those darks really are an how little halftones might differ, contrast experience,

Now what I noticed is that when moving to pencil, I swap to my pencil brain, so all that observations go out the window, the tip or cue I'd like to give you and myself is to bridge the gap in differant media so that your learning will come through in all of them. I can see it peeking in your work especially your last bit but the problem sometimes is that we might default to older styles or habits. Don't let that happen.

Lastly, outline is traditional way to communicate knowledge of what's there, I need to break that rule in my mind that says that outline is the way, what about overlap, what contours are actually visible etc? Construction maybe but when drawing I need to kick wanting to state knowledge by drawing outlines of it. It's just that I drew outline since I started as a child, it's an old habit but it's time for it to go, unless it's construction, so I guess I need to have a clear intent on when I am constructing and when I am drawing.

Emil_J.
March 7th, 2009, 04:11 AM
Lionsword : Well, i guess im close at some sort of half-year anniversary thingy, so "just started" isn't really the right way to put it, but thanks anyways :D

zaorr: those observations are so true - thank you :) ! Especially the point about transferring what you learn i one media to another. I will definite try to be better at doing that.

Todays update:
some pencil drawings and some mega-fail digitals

~Faust~
March 7th, 2009, 05:39 AM
Hehe, fail-drawings are important, man and great to look at if there's also kick-ass studies present like your boxers or those noses from the last update. I really enjoy your dedication, man! Don't slow down, please!

Marria
March 7th, 2009, 01:49 PM
Whoa, great progress here! I love the value studies and poses (which reminds me, I really should be doing more of these too, need to find the patience!) especially the ones from mmaphotography.com (great refs too).

And you update pretty regularly too! Niiice!

(and thanks for the feedback in my sb again!)

Emil_J.
March 8th, 2009, 05:07 AM
~Faust~: Yes, now i found how not to make a digital painting :P. As for the slowing down: i wont :confident

Marria: thanks :) - and yea mmaphotography is a good site for finding good references.

Todays update. Drawings from yesterday:
- Did a storyboard-kinda-thingy of a fight scene. Luckily for the guy without the gun, a chest-high wall appeared out of nowhere :P

Braintree: Ok, i keep pooping :D

Today's update:

- A digital painting of a humanoid bug thingy. The line work is from my last post. Somehow i feel that it looks a bit like plastic.... :\

Emil_J.
March 14th, 2009, 04:24 PM
Ok, I said i was going to do a MMA study tonight, but my master-study took waaaay longer then i had imagined, so no room for MMA study. The master-study is of a painting by Rembrandt called "Old Man in Military Costume". It took me alll day to make (7 - 8 hours). I must say i'm pretty happy with the result, and i really feel that i learned a lot by doing it :).

Emil_J.
March 15th, 2009, 02:08 PM
here is a step-by-step of the master-study:

Kristo Novo
March 15th, 2009, 06:32 PM
realy nice ref stuff - and keep going with drawing poses - maybe try some other media like charcoal or marker - and maybe try to do some environments just to vary themes

Dilated
March 16th, 2009, 01:40 AM
Man, latest study is really dope.
I've noticed your lacking a bit of female drawings in general, I used to avoid it at all costs, scared that I'll make it too masculine (still do lol) but you can only learn from mistakes. keep drawwwwing

oh and thanks for dropping by my SB

Leon Roé
March 16th, 2009, 06:58 AM
Hi Fumble, Thanks for the post in mij SB!
You have some nice work here. Love the Crow.
Nice job on the Rembrandt 2 ;)

Emil_J.
March 21st, 2009, 06:14 AM
omg 4 replies! :D

@ Kristo Novo: thanks for the reply :) - charcoal poses sounds fun, i think ill try that. As for the environments, ill do some later today or tomorrow.

@ Dilated: Yea i haven't drawn any females - i had not noticed that at all:S * note to self: start drawing the female figure *

@ Leon Roé: Thanks :D

@ Felipe: thank you, i will.

Ok ... i haven't updated for a while, been busy doing non-art things (shame on me!) So all i can show you are some poses, brigdeman, and then my very first real color study :) - i figure it is about time i start getting more comfortable with colors.

Emil_J.
March 22nd, 2009, 04:40 AM

Nice work fumble! So you know Braintree too? He as a nice SB as well.

Your rembrant study is amazing - that would take me like 1 week to complete let alone one day.

I am very excited for you dude because I can tell you're going to be very very good! Keep up the hard work.

And keep doing those posemaniacs until they become easy!

Felipe
March 24th, 2009, 11:07 AM
Ih, thank you by reply in my sb, i will go to search some things to study.. study, study, study...is the way, hehe!

Emil_J.

RedWarrior: Hey, thanks, no problem. :)

AlexTooth: Thank you. And yes i know Braintree, he is my brother 8).

Felipe's: Yes, study study study :lifedrawing:

Ok ill try not to sound like an emo here ......

I haven't update my sketchbook for a while (8 days :wtf: ), i have been sick and i have only been able to do a few scribbles with pencil and then some color studies from the movie "The Incredible Hulk". damn being sick is just a waste of time .... i had almost made it though winter without getting sick and then, a few days from spring, i get my first cold... damn ... well just got to work harder to catch up :)

Here's a batch:
p.s: the last hulk-study is still W.I.P :P

Frank Gressie
March 31st, 2009, 05:04 PM
hey! haha ya, i got sick too this week :(
I really like the dedication you have, and its stuff like that what makes you great :) you don't like the loomis heads? i think loomis is great with the heads. You should try to apply the loomis method with famous people heads. Then you'll see how simple heads are, but remember, nothings comes easy, it takes much practice! I think you're on the right way, i'll come back from time to time to check your progression!

I am sure your improvement will make big steps in small time.
See ya and thnx for stopping by my sketchbook :D

That mmaphotography.com site is nice reference, I be sure to check that out. I like your Rembrandt study, great value and likeness.

Emil_J.
April 2nd, 2009, 10:46 AM
Frank Gressie: yea being sick sucks :(.
Well yes i think that loomies is great with heads too, but the head that i copied didn't really teach me anything new. As you say i could try to use the same techniques as loomies, and them draw something totally new, instead of just copying them. ill try that.
You are welcome back anytime :)

kingkostas: Thanks :D ill continue with the studies

Pigeonkill: yea mmaphotography.com is a great reference-site for muscles with skin on top , and anatomy in general.
Thanks for the kind words on the Rembrandt :)

today's update ---> hands.... LOTS OF HANDS :D
(a little quiz-question: am i left or right-handed?? :?: )

Wow Fumble, you've been busy, that's cool to see :). Nice hands, tackle the problems you encounter when drawing those poses. Also, try to get some "sharpness" in the movie shots :).

Anyway, just some tips, just keep going!

Impressive amount of hand sketches and nice work on those Incredible Hulk pieces.

Emil_J.

Oh yeah!
Great to see you're doing bridgman studies, His stuff is great! Nice handstudies too!
A tip when doing posemaniacs.. I don't know how many seconds you're working with, but when drawing the character - start with torso and hips and connect them with a line acting as spine, it'll make it a lot easier to lay the rest of the lines that way.
keep pushing it!

For this image I was wondering when you paint from grayscale to colored flesh tones. Do you use "colorize option" or do you just start adding color on top of the gray. Whenever I do that it' get's all muddy for me.

Emil_J.
April 12th, 2009, 04:07 AM
@ DeeLock: wow you find it inspiring?! well thank you :D
I will keep rocking then :rocker:

@ DefiledVisions: yea bridgeman rule:bow: !
As for the posemaniacs; I usually start with the head and then try to build the figure downwards. and most of the time it is 45 sec poses. But starting with the torso and pelvis sounds like a good idea. Ill use that technique on my next poses.

@ Pigeonkill: Yes i began with the "colorize option" and found a warm pinkish color, and used that as a base. I then made a new layer and in the blending modes drop-down list i chose "color". I then painted in some redness on the face and neck and some yellowish on the arms/torso.
(It was actually my brother (BrainTree) that told me that i could do it that way :P)

Todays update:

- poses
- bridgeman
- Some drawings of people from reference
- A lifepainting from my room. Got bored with it so it is not finished :P

Lyno
April 12th, 2009, 01:38 PM
Hi Fumble, great :). That's life drawing looks like fun. Keep doing those. A thing I could suggest is that you could start doing some face studies too.

Looking good. :)

The progress you've made since post one is rather substantial. Just look at those heads in post one. Some of them have hardly any structure at all and are practically melting! And then look at some more recent ones, particulary those in post #20. Just look! :D The progress you've made is inspirational for my own little sketchbook. Keep up the regular posting, this stuff is getting good. Have a pat on the ass for it. :asspat:

@ Lyno: yes i feel that i learn a lot when doing lifedrawing :). As for the face-studying i focused a lot on faces on my first two pages here in my sketchbook, but i kept hitting a wall that i couldn't get over, so i started focusing on other things. So yes i really should get back to studying the head.

@ Ekonk: Thank you thank you thank you !! :D

Hey Fumble thanks for dropping by my sketchbook!

Great to see fellow artist on a same journey as I am. Your studies are very good, keep at it! Very nice hand studies as well as digital color studies. You are doing great job here.

Your progress is amazing for a person who's only drawn for a year! Quite spectacular. You will go far with this, just keep the ball rolling, stay motivated and work hard. No critiques or tips as in my opinion you are heading the right direction with full speed.

April 20th, 2009, 04:09 PM
cool works, love the the digital paintings, the color and the values are pretty good.

the pencil works are nice, you have a good line, you should put more detailed pencil works from your imagination for now it´s hard to make some suggestions but from what i can see you need to work more on the faces and on values.

keep it up

Emil_J.
April 23rd, 2009, 01:58 PM
@ YuZa: thank you - ill just keep drawing then :)

@ Pheike: yes i really need to get better at pencil/charcoal values. But it is also what i find most difficult.... sooo i guess i just got to practice more :P

Ok, today i only got digitals.

Also exams eh :( good luck!
Cool witchdoctor, a tip if you want to improve your colours, try some colourstudies. You can find photos on National geographic or other professional sites. Maybe you can also try copying some master drawings? Try to think how they worked and see the values.

I hope this all make some sense, because I'm trying to do this stuff too :)

Good luck!

Waa, Allready done with the exams :D. I have my first one tomorrow :p. Anyway, congrats with your degree :steph: :lounge:.

For the studies, I have to agree with Kasper. Maybe you could address another part of the figure, like legs or arms? Draw hundreds of them :D.

mmm when I look at this, it doesn't feel like "cg" but more like a paint study from claymation. Maybe it's the drooping textures? Not sure but I like the effect. That movie was pretty neat.

Kasper_P: Takker, det håber jeg også :P.

Lyno: Good luck with your exams :). You are right, i do have to spred out my studies more so that i dont just study hand and faces :P - ill try the arm :)

Pigeonkill: The painting was actually a lot more difficult then i thought it would be :P. After an hours work i had finally got the wall, table and plates down... and i just wanted to delete everything and start over :P well i guess i just have to try harder :)

aaah, you´re from denmark,
i was there in last summer vacation, and i fell in love with this wonderful country, it was awesome-i started jogging, and i´m really lazy :D but the country was damn beuatiful, wanted to see everything.
maybe, when i´m older, i can live there...who knows
man, i wanted to say something to your sketchbook, not something about denmark :D

ok, ehem, you are awesome, learning very fast without forgetting details, i´m getting jealous when i see you hand studies.
the environment study, well the short sketch, i lovely, too.
i think you have a great idea of skin colour, the witchdoctor looks quite realistic.
so, keep it up, i´ll take a look at your sketchbook aganin, i promise ;) i´m sure it will be worth.

And now for the daily update. Here are some drawings for yesterday:

- A drawing of a statue from the "Thorvalsens" museum in Copenhagen. It took me about 4 hours to make. I should have finished it, buuuuuut after 4 hours, sitting cramped in a bad posture on a small chair with no back rest, i decided to stop while it as still fun :). One day i really need to finish a drawing :P

- Bridgeman studies of the arm

Emil_J.
June 6th, 2009, 03:14 AM
time for my daily update :)
These are drawings for yesterday:

- Warmup poses
- Vilppu study of gesture x2
- poses from imagination where i tried to use what i had learned from my Vilppu study. I added some color around them to spice it up a bit :P
- Bridgeman study of the arm where i painted over the drawings from my last post. I have very much been inspired by colepoopface's way of studying anatomy.

@ Janos: Ill tighten up the edges :).
"Just a lot better than me." naaah me not think so.

I love the studies on this page, keep working on the rendering, you're really making a lot of headway with it it seems. And I'm talking about the pencil studies. That of course, is not mentioning your digital works, which just keep getting better! I love the fighter theme you have here...those studies look great. Just keep it up man, I love looking at your thread because there's always something new!

Emil_J.
June 9th, 2009, 03:35 AM

fumble; amazingly cool shading there; in you chars sometimes the directions don't add up perspective-wise, which makes things turn out a little flat (like the last piece). sketching with directional boxes should help.

Emil_J.
June 10th, 2009, 03:19 AM
@ ashess: you are definitely right, i really need to improve my perspective skills. I'll add it to my now rather long list of things i need to pay special attention to :).

The daily update:

June 10th, 2009, 12:31 PM
Nice man you are pushing out some real good studies. Love your pencil work on the last page and the still-life of the table with the dishes. Maybe put in some more time on the b&w studies to push the values more to get that illusion of depth. Other then that really top notch work, keep pushing your on the right track.

@ Imaginary: dude thanks, great moral boost :D

the days daily update :yayca::

Hello Fumble,
What a lovely progress through this sketchbook. Nice to see those very loose figure sketches on paper and the master reference a couple of pages ago and that new franklin reference. Don't got much more to say since I'm just starting out again but keep it up.

Emil_J.
June 12th, 2009, 11:35 AM
@ unruhe: Thanks for the encouraging words :D. You should start a sketchbook yourself, it a great way to get feedback and keep track of you own progress. Cheers!

Today's daily update: not much to show, i have been working on a CHoW character, but im stuck with it. It more like an anatomy study :S. I also tried to make some heads from imagination, but they turned out soo bad that im simple not going to upload them :P.

Emil_J.
June 13th, 2009, 03:45 AM
Today i have some more statue drawings, where i focused on different parts of the body.

When i had finished drawing me and my brother went to an exhibition at The Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen... wow, the amount of crap they can fit into one room is staggering :wtf:. It was the kind of art, that you didn't really know that the soda cans stacked on top of each other was a piece of art before you noticed the "untitled" label next to it... You don't know if the trashcan in the corner is just a trashcan or a part of the exhibition.. Lets just say that i was kind of disappointed. Apart from that me and my brother had a lot of fun anyways.

Lyno
June 13th, 2009, 05:58 AM
Hi Fumble, again great studies :) but I would like to see some more storytelling figures :).

Emil_J.
June 14th, 2009, 03:00 AM
@ Lyno: you are absolutely right, i really need to start applying what i have learned to actual illustrations that convey some sort of story. I hope something like that will be in one of my updates within the next few days :)

Todays update:
- warmup poses
- a colorstudy of a lady in a yellow dress (from ref). I tried to make the BG a a purpel-redish color so it is complementary to the yellow dress.

Caboodle
June 14th, 2009, 03:19 AM
Wow, very nice stuff!
I simply love your charcoal-studies, makes me feel like doing some on my own. :)
And also good work with this yellow dressed lady! The expression is just sweet, and I like how the yellow is reflected on her skin. (well, it should, naturally, but I ever enjoyed such effects. )
But I think the backgroundcolour is a little bit too pinkish to be complementary to yellow. According to Itten it is a deep purple, right? And as far as I know according to the RGB/CMYK-theory it would be blue.
Just a little thought. ;)

But anyway: I really enjoy your sketchbook! :)

And on a sidenote: How exactly do you draw those rough movement-studies? Do you have references or not? How quickly do you draw one?

jackpot_anjr90
June 14th, 2009, 01:43 PM
Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook :)
I see a lot of progress in here since the first page! You're really committed to your studies and I especially like your study of values...those will really help you. I see a lot of torsos here so I think you should work more on legs as well.
Keep it up I'll be watching :D

As for the rough movement-studies i i use posemaniacs.com and the book by Vilppu

@ jackpot_anjr90: Thanks :) - and yes my studies have had a very upper-body focus, i really have to start studying the legs.

@ Jesus Food: i'm diffinatly going to do some perspective studies soon, so i wont be in so much pain anymore :P

todays daily update:

yesterday i went to my first life drawing session ever. It was a total of 3 hours and the model changed pose at different time intervals. Some was 30 seconds others where 10 min poses:

jackpot_anjr90
June 16th, 2009, 12:09 AM
Nice life drawings! You do a great job of capturing the gesture in the little time you have. Keep it up and you'll be able to get more done in that limited time.
www.posemaniacs.com is a great site to practice quick figure drawing. Try the 30 second gestures (goes up to 90 actually), that'll really help.
Keep it up!

@ jackpot_anjr90: yea posemaniacs is a good site, but it really has its limits. So i just use it for warmups now.

I am amazed how fast u are improving, considering u just started less than a year ago?? Ur dedication and hardwork is really paying off. I find ur digital seems to be slightly better than ur traditional. Try to apply what u know through ur digital on ur traditional and let both improve at the same rate would be the best... i think :P Keep at it !!

todays update:

- KChen study
- a face

KarylGilbertson
June 22nd, 2009, 11:50 AM
Nice dude, keep it up on those studies, I think you could work a little more on facial structure and anatomy (maybe try some planar head studies to get a feel for the planes of the face?) But the amount of sketches you're putting out is real good, and your grasp of tones is fairly strong.

Keep going!

Emil_J.
June 22nd, 2009, 12:59 PM

Emil mate.... one word to describe you would be uber-dedicated!

love the progression you've made in the space of just a few months. A few things definatly caught my eye, esspecially the rembrant remake and your colour studies. Showing some serious skill development. and the daily updates of 30 second poses and hand studies etc are defiantly paying off... Also, your portraiture is becoming more expressive the more you work into the pieces.. you are flying along!! keep it up

Well, that's weird. Both you and Braintree have Nyhavn in todays updates. Have you been meeting there ? Or is that some weird cosmic coincedence ? Or is it popular among you denmark artist folks to go to Nyhavn and draw stuff ? I'm really confused here !
And I like that curch spire.

Who doesn't like Benjamin Franklin? Your strokes in that painting came out very good, you can tell a lot of thought was put into it. The self portrait I think needs a touch up, such as some well placed highlights and darker values.

Those gestural studies are looking real nice. You've really got the eye. That Benji Frank portrait looks fuckin killer bro. Are gonna detail it more? It could certainly use another layer or two.

Nice dude. Keep that shit up.

July 1st, 2009, 03:09 AM
@ pijus: I will :)

@ Lyno: Since it is International Portrait and Composition Month i have promised my self that i will make a sp every day :D

@ Cuervo: Thanks :) - more is on the way

@ cole.ossus: yea i really need to be more mindful when i do sp's, i hope that they will improvement over the next month.

@ Peetaer: i might come back to the benjamin franklin portrait in the future, but right now ill leave it as it is :)

ok i have another self portrait for todays update and some studies and some poop speedies.

A character from imagination and another self portrait

RoboMonkey
July 2nd, 2009, 02:10 PM
Maan. Your studys have bridgman written all over them. That's totally cool. And one can also see that in your peintings. I really like 'em. And Mr. Franklin looks awesome. :)
Btw, about the anatomy sketches: Are you using charcoal for these ? I'd really like to know because it seems to work well with these kinds of skeches.

KarylGilbertson
July 2nd, 2009, 05:33 PM
Nice dude. I saw that portrait of Ben Franklin in the Portraits thread.. that shit is awesome sauce. Nice amount of studies too, and I"m digging the colour studies from movie stills. I should really do some of that. Keep it up man!

jackpot_anjr90
July 2nd, 2009, 08:18 PM
Nice studies! Keep up the Bridgman and pose studies...you do a good job of capturing the rhythm in the amount of time you have.

Emil_J.
July 3rd, 2009, 11:27 AM
@ RoboMonkey: yeah i like bridgeman's approach to anatomy :) i usually just use a simple HB mechanical pencil for my anatomy studies, for my short lifedrawing pose drawing i use a 7B traditional pencil.

@ Ookchk: thanks, though im still quite lost about how much detrails i should but into those moviestills :P

@ jackpot_anjr90: Thank you :)

For todays update i have some sketches from the Copenhagen zoo, that i visited yesterday, and then i have another self portrait.

July 4th, 2009, 12:36 AM
Great awesomeness! Your thread inspires me. I really liked the master study and it's really great seeing the self portraits cropping up here! This page in general is just really impressive. A lot of content, a lot of hard work. Good stuff. For a first time self portrait these seem like pretty convincing likenesses, or at least close. I just have that sense. Keep working, I know you'll be there in no time.
The lighting on this latest sp is really convincing though I think your lips might be subtly sliding to the right too much...but that's just my opinion...maybe the placement is correct and it's just the surrounding form that isn't as effective as it needs to be. **Shrug** Anyways, good stuff!

stagehand
July 4th, 2009, 12:41 AM
Nice work! You've improved a ton since you started this thread. Keep up the good work!

Emil_J.
July 4th, 2009, 11:13 AM
@ sketcheth: you really think so ? cool :D. and yea the lips are abit misplace, hopefully ill get better at placing the features the more portrait i make :)

@ stagehand: Thanks, i will :)

todays update only include a self portrait, i tried to make a few characters yesterday but they all turned out really really bad, soooo...

Emil_J.
July 5th, 2009, 03:03 AM
todays update include a kind of self portrait where i played around with color and stuff, when i started doing the sci-fi equipment i realized how much i suck at painting metal, so i found some items around my house that i painting for practice.

Leonor
July 5th, 2009, 03:48 AM
Wow. I like your self-portrait with the sci-fi equipment a lot. Your face looks awesome and I hope you manage to finish the rest with the same level of realism.

Metal is so hard. I find I can copy from life but then I don't understand enough to make metal where I want it. Whatever you learn and can offer as tips I'd appreciate.

Cuervo
July 5th, 2009, 08:10 PM
hey fumble, those metal studies are good. and that SP is coming along nicely, as i said to Braintree, i reckon more of the imagination peices would be good... anatomy referances are great and all but keep those concepts fresh... if you get me?

Great job on the Benjamin Portrait. It really does look like him.

The top Portrait reminds me the borg a bit, but your concept is still very original.

Emil_J.
July 6th, 2009, 03:34 AM
@ Leonor: Thanks :) from my metal study i learned that the shine is limited to a very small area (only where the light hit directly) the rest has a very traditional metal color and only reflect the surroundings a little (depends on what type of metal it is).

@ Cuervo: Thank you. I totally agree i really need to do some more imaginative pieces. I think i will join the CHOW.

@ Pigeonkill: not really sure what a borg is, but thanks anyways :D

todays update is alot of drawing i made at a life drawing session and then i ofc the daily self portrait.

@ cole.ossus: Thanks :)

@ jackpot_anjr90: thank you i will

todays update does not include a sp, but i promise tomorrows update will include two, to make up for todays lost one. Below is two imaginative shitty doodles and a master study from a painting:

KarylGilbertson
July 7th, 2009, 10:23 AM
Hey man, nice studies as usual. The sci-fi portrait is interesting, you might want to keep playing around with that and see where it takes you. I dig the metal studies too, the surfaces read pretty well in there so I think you were pretty successful.

Emil_J.
July 8th, 2009, 03:13 AM
@ Ookchk: Thanks!. ill definitely come back the the sci-fi portrait one way or another, maybe as a rework.

--
todays update include a moleskin sketch, some heads from imagination, a crappy speedpainting and a WIP selfportrait. (with means i still need to do an extra one)

RoboMonkey
July 8th, 2009, 06:21 PM
Man, your short life drawings always seem so... easy and natural. But I think they are a bit of a pain in the ass.
Anyway, nice bridgeman studies (as usual ;)) and you're doing a good job with these MMA studies.

Emil_J.
July 9th, 2009, 07:27 AM
@ RoboMonkey: Thanks :)

for todays update i have the finished version of yesterdays self portrait. And then i fooled around with different approaches to coloring. They are both HUGE failures, but somehow i must have learned something by making them, i just don't know what yet:P.

ooh and btw... summer holiday is GREAT :D

dierat
July 9th, 2009, 08:33 AM
This page is just great. I love the figure sketches, the metal studies, and the portraits. Keep working the flesh tones on that portrait, you'll get there. Are you using a new layer with mode set to color? It kinda looks like you're painting opaquely over your values with color.

Lyno
July 9th, 2009, 11:33 AM
Hey Fumble, it's cool to see that those SP are getting beter and better, isn't it? :D
Just gogogogo.

KarylGilbertson
July 9th, 2009, 11:48 AM
I think there's too much "using black for shadows" going on here. try to figure out the colour of your light, and use shades of its complement for the shadows. And throw some other colours in there, too... colour variation FTW (you might try things like, it's been said that there are slight yellow tones in the forehead, some reddish pink tones in the middle of the face, and some slight bluish tones where your facial hair grows.)

jackpot_anjr90
July 9th, 2009, 08:21 PM
Try using an overlay layer to color on top of your black and while layer. Most of the time the color won't come out exactly the way you want it so you have to do some touch ups. If you don't like that method then try doing straight up color from the start. Squint your eyes (well, that's what I do :P) when looking at the still life you're painting to see the blocks of main colors...then put them on the page...get the proportions right and then begin to blend the colors. You'll get it with practice.

Emil_J.
July 10th, 2009, 03:37 AM
@ dierat: Thank, i hope i do to :). On the first one i did make a new layer with mode set to color.

@ Lyno: getting better? :P well i hope they are, but sometimes it is very hard for me to see the improvement:P

@ Ookchk: Yes i did surrender and used black a my shadow color :( it wont happen again :P Ill try with some more color variation.

@ jackpot_anjr90: The first color portrait is done with a layer set to color on top of my B/W layer. But i just find i so hard to control the outcome of the coloring, because the color i chose is not the one that appear on the screen, but a completely other one :( So i really like the straight to color approach more. So the secound color painting is done with just a normal layer on top of my B/W layer. The result is still butt ugly but i enjoyed the process more :)

todays update:
There was supposed to be a lot of model life drawing, but the session was canceled (which my brother and i found out only after we had driven all the way to Copenhagen >:{)
So for this update i only have a life drawing and a life painting. I didn't finish the life drawing because the rendering was killing me :P

Costau
July 10th, 2009, 01:06 PM
Yeah still life drawing can be a pain if you don't have other things on your mind. Once you start concentrating though it's like meditating haha. If I were you, try finishing it. The HD painting came out nice though, but careful with the shadow placement.

Emil_J.
July 11th, 2009, 03:09 AM
@ cole.ossus: yea i really should finish it :\. The HD shadow was make in like 30 seconds, so yea i need to allocate a bit more time to it :P

Man, you gotta love that samurai armor. Really neat !
Also good job on the self portraits. About that metal-surface-stuff: I think you're doing that really well, man. Maybe the surface could be a bit more shiny or reflecting. Could be a stylistic question, though.

jackpot_anjr90

July 16th, 2009, 07:50 AM
Thanks for the post m8! Im here to return the love. :)
I looked through your SB and I se a lot of progress.
I have some pointers.
When working with digi. I saw you were putting colors on a black and white value peice, you were poainting colors ontop of it. Its real hard to get a good color tone in the peice that way. Now what you wanna do is geta good base color on it ore several. Add a color layer in photoshop and fill it with the color/colors you want for the mood then you work on top of that in a new layer. This way you dont need to repaint evrything. Just add stuff and render it. :) Hope you got some of that. :D
mahalo!

Finally..... the still life is done! Hmm isn't there something about you should enjoy making art.. well that sort of went out the window after the first 10 hours and then i just wanted to finish it :P.

I think it will be that last still life i will do for a while (4-5 days at least). Staring at a computer screen non-stop for hours and hours has made my eyes quite red and irritated so i think i will take a few days off from my computer, which means only traditional stuff :).

Hey man, nice stuff in the latest updates... Those colour studies are really nice and I'm diggin' the still life... Also you can't go wrong with anatomy studies :)

As for crits... I would say take a little more time when you're adding tones to your pencil studies... right now they look a little flat, so try to use your tone and shading to really describe the form of what you're drawing.

Keep it up mang!

Todays update is a very special update. Well not the update itself but what is special about today is that it is exactly 1 year ago that i decided to do something serious about my drawing skills (or lack thereof :P). So i have now been drawing for 1 year. Well two of the months i didn't touch a pencil or tablet because of exams and stuff :(. Anyways i will continue to develop my art skills as best as i can, and see where it takes me :). Oh and congratulations to my brother (BrainTree) he has also been drawing for a year now :D.

For todays update i only have traditional stuff:

todays update:

- poses from imagination
- SP..... damn skintones

Lyno
July 22nd, 2009, 05:32 AM
Hey man! Skintones are hard indeed :). Now it's looking you're going to brown and muddy with your shadow tones. I suggest you a like at Jens his sb (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=60577). He once had a workshop at our school and it was a real eye opener for me :D. Try to see how he uses those reds in the nose area and ears. How and where he places those highlights.

I feel that i must apologize for this feeble little update. I went to the Zoo yesterday and i made these here sketches. - an environmental speedpainting.

dierat
July 26th, 2009, 12:21 PM
Hey awesome onion ^^ For some reason the bottom feels a bit flat to me. I think it might actually be the outer edges of the onion which are a bit sharp and in some areas there's a bit of an outline. Try to capture the roundness of the object, that the edges of the object are angling away from us in space. Keep up the good work!

Lyno
July 26th, 2009, 12:22 PM

Todays update:
Lyno said that i used to much brown color for my skin tones and proposed that i take a look at Jens's (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=60577) stuff. It showed me that i have to take my skintones in a much more red'ish/pink'ish direction. I tried to apply it on this self portrait. .... and hrmmm still a long way to go ;P

Emil_J.
July 28th, 2009, 01:24 PM
Todays update:
- Some crap poses from imagination
- Some bridgeman studies. I tried to use the same technique as E. M. Gist. Where i first copy the bridgeman anatomy and then after wards put in some more realistic shading, so i get a better feel for the forms. Link to his blog here (http://deadoftheday.blogspot.com/2009/07/perspiration-anatomy.html).
- Lyno said i should try to give the 2nd concept from my previous post, some color. I have done the head and some of his right arm so far.

sketcheth
July 28th, 2009, 03:02 PM
It's very apparent that you're pushing yourself, and it looks as though your skin tones got a real boost from doing that intense self portrait study. Keep this work coming, I'm very impressed by what you have going already. Just doing more figures will help that to improve, because that seems to be one of the bigger weaknesses here, just keep studying! I admire how well you can keep this updated consistently! :D *high five*
