View Full Version : Shannanigan's Sketchbook Shenanigans...

Ok I'm starting up one of these Sketchbooks... I wasn't real sure what they are supposed to be, but looking through some I guess its pretty much a free-for-all. >:D

A little about myself.... my name is Shannon and I currently live in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. I am originally from Michigan and have lived in Boston, Chicago, St. Louis and even a short stint in Milan, Italy. I design women's footwear for a living (well somebody has to do it! LOL!). When I was young I had dreams of being an animator (2D, 3D barely existed then. I'm old.) or work for Marvel, obviously neither happened. I'm 100% self-taught, and after nearly 20 years of drawing I still suck at hands. Haha!

I prefer to draw Black-Line art.... cartoon/comic style. I constantly commit Artistic Treachery by referencing anatomy and poses from... *gasp* stock photos! No I'm not ashamed of it and yes I am aware that my proportions are off sometimes. ;)

I really need to work on drawing Males, body-type variations in my characters and creating my own environments rather than using photo backgrounds for everything. Honestly my architectural and horizon line perspective skills are pretty non-existent. Its all those years I spent drawings "floating" pin-up girls... LOL!

Anyway... enough rambling... here is some art. :geekg:

This week's CHOW (#141) is to design the 3 Ghosts from "Christmas Carol".... Past, Present and "To Come" (aka Future. :D )

So here is my progression so far.... these first two are photos I took of my sketches because I was visiting the folks for Christmas and they have no scanner!! *scream*

Yeah I was trying to think of other famous Betty(ie)s she could dress up as and being a cartoon freak, Betty Rubble popped into my head first. Which was perfect since they both have black hair! :D

None for you Missy! LOL!

Heres my first WIP for the CHOW 142 - "Knight of the Round Table".
Drawing guys is so freakin' hard.... and as usual the bane of my artistic existence is the damn hands. *crys*

EDIT: A little progress update on my Knight in Shining Armor... :muscle:

shannanigan
January 7th, 2009, 01:26 PM
Holy Crap... what is this?? Is it... no.... it can't be... a hand-drawn "study" from Shannon. Its a miracle!! LOL!
The hands are drawn from my right hand, which is far inferior to my left... and yes I have really little hands with short fingers.

Did I reach my 100 limit on how many times a week I can mention the horror that is the drawing of hands? Ok good.... I hate hands. :D

The "head" is intended to go on my Knight buddy up above there... it came from my brain. So I guess its not really a "study"... just a sketch.

EDIT: Added the Photoshop drawing "Head" for my Knight... with "test" hair. LOL!

I like your style especially the betty rubble pic. The only thing with your work i think is sometimes the lines are slightly too thick and draw away from the focal points of the picture. But other than that kool sketchbook.

p.s hi i'm the new guy in the sketch group with no name :D

You are officially in my Signature... ;)

Yeah I do all my stuff with a single thickness and go back in and add weight, for "shadow". I'm sure sometimes I overcompensate....
but the single weight looks too flat and unfinished and I have no skill with using "brushes" where I can't control the thickness. I blame it on being left handed... *lame* Hahaha! :D

Why isn't the completed Ghosts in here, hmmm? :)

Thanks for the reminder! I added it up there in post #6. :D

Here is my completed Lancelot for CHOW 142... took inspiration from lots of different things I ran across in my research. I read he was rumored to be descended from King David (slight Michelangelo influence in his hair and face), Roman inspired "anatomical" armor, the heraldic "Leopard" shield and other random stuff.

Cool stuff so far shannanigan! :D Love the Betty tribute, you've got a pretty cool style going on so far :) Only thing I can pick out to crit so far is how in your Lancelot piece, the background doesn't seem to go with the style your character has. It just doesn't help the piece flow. Hope that helps :)

In the great tradition of PeeWee Herman... I meant to do that! ;)

Since the character is the main focus, I wanted Lancelot to pop out of the picture. My intention was to have the background be more of a backdrop than an actual environment, so I made it less defined, no outlines, etc. and went with a more graphic design approach with the shield and split image. Quasi-Art Deco thing.... if that makes any sense. Plus, I suck at environments. LOL!

Unfortunately my brilliant plans don't always translate well outside my head. :D

shannanigan
January 13th, 2009, 11:59 AM
So I'm working on a little project for myself... it started out as random Illustrations of Steampunk inspired people, but now I'm thinking about making something out of it.

I jumped the gun and did a "Cover", which I'm posting below.... and realized I had to really step back and do development (both on the Universe I was creating and my drawing skills).

So I've been working on Character sheets, and hopefully environments eventually. Then I'll need to pull some writing skills out of my ass... its going to be a LOOOONG labor of love! LOL!

shannanigan
January 13th, 2009, 12:06 PM

I little downtime at work today.... quick and freakin' messy as hell idea for this weeks CHOW. Post Apocalyptic Conjoined Twins...

I'm officially passing on the Siamese Mutant Twin Chow this week and gonna try the POW19 (deadline Feb. 1st).

Here are roughs... 2 of 3 pages. I'm withholding the last page, since its the "punchline". Gotta leave something a surprise! LOL! My goal is the have them "inked" (for lack of a better term) by the deadline... since full color is probably a long shot.

I need to study the swing span bridge construction. Though it is Steampunk fantasy I want to be somewhat era-appropriate so I couldn't use a "Bascule" bridge (like a draw bridge) that I wanted to use originally. Swing spans were more common in the late 1800's along the Northwest coast. Ah scientific facts... how I hate you. I know more about bridges right now than I ever cared to know. LOL!

I found this site for future reference.... looks to be very helpful for vintage inventions! http://www.wow-engineering.co.uk/

Why thank You... I think. ;)

Yeah I admit I'm an "on-the-fly" anatomy study... I'll spend days trying to figure out the anatomy of what I'm working on.... and still won't get the damn hands right!!
I don't doodle for study's sake but I know I really should (and need to!) but the artistic ADHD always kicks in. :D

Thought I better put some art on this page!

This is a progression "WIP" of couple panels I'm working on. These aren't for POW... its a short intro story about my character Leo. As you can see it takes me a few rounds to pull things together (well as together as I'm gonna get!)... I don't do perfect, gorgeous rough sketches... or final pieces either. LOL!

Hooray for ideas!! You know, you don't need a sketchbook to doodle! I draw on photocopy paper.... napkins... backs of envelopes... whatever is within reach and expendable sometimes! If your inspired to draw don't let a lack of sketchbook stop you! :D

I just started drawing straight to the computer... after 15 years of drawing by hand. I still go back when I'm having a tough time with something and hand sketch it. Though now I scan the sketch and draw over it on the computer instead of inking by hand.

Also... and this is advice for myself as well... don't feel you gotta keep up with people on this site. Do whats best to improve yourself... for yourself! :D

Little Update on my "POW" entry.... first page with roughed in highs and lows. I don't think I'll make it to full color since I still have to "ink" the second page. But I may try some tonal thing for the challenge and color it later.

Frakturika Spamless! :D Good choice in fonts!

Nice detailing in your lineart too :)

On the boy saying "Yeah sure", I'm sure I read somewhere that keeping the eyes away from the edges of the face adds a sense of *something*. But I'm pretty sure it was from a Manga book, so it might not be the same rule for your style of art. And I have no mirror to hand so can't check if the human eye can ever clip the side of the face.

It looks fine whatever the weather.

And, just so I dont feel bad, I assure you I was going to update my sketchbook today, but a) I've been dabbling in 3d :D and b) My missus bought me Grand Theft Auto IV, a spanner in the works if ever there was one!

Thanks! I can't believe you know the name of the font. :D

The kids eye doesn't actually go to the edge but when shrunk down it does look like it. I might adjust it a bit unless it throws if off too much. I think that rule is a Manga one... probably an ancient Japanese superstition or something. LOL! Because there is a point where the eye will be "on the edge" of the face as it angles away from view. Of course that still doesn't mean my facial anatomy is correct.... ;)

That photo is my hair on a lazy day and the gray streaks are brushed apart so they don't show up in the pic.

I think it's because the anatomy of the queen is good but the zombies look a bit too comical.

Check it out HERE (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=594368&stc=1&d=1234757301) I may post it in the "Finally Finished" section once the challenge is over. Thats right dammit... I think it turned out great so I'm gonna toss my shit in with the so-called "Big Boys"... and watch it get picked apart by the anal-retentive. :P

So now I have time again for CHOW. These are my roughs for the this weeks topic... Paranormal P.I. Love it! This may turn out to be a full-on illustration rather than character design... but hell nobody does straight character design in CHOW anyway. LOL!

The first is my initial idea sketch... the second of my final rough. I adjusted layout and poses, and changed the devil girl's weapon from a rather mundane handgun to evil powers from a demonic symbol on her hand. Much more "paranormal". Now I have to think of something Noir'ish for the story tagline at the bottom. :D

Yeah she is showing her true self, tail popping out... and her hand is turning into a demon hand (which you can't really tell since these are in super crappy sketch form) so I intend for it to be out of proportion to exaggerate what was happening.

I think I'm going to take a break from the CHOWs and do my own thing for a while. I'm honestly irritated with it... wish I wasn't because its rather stupid to feel this way. But I just don't get it... the stuff people vote for in there. I know it doesn't mean squat in the real world, but it is starting to discourage me, that my art isn't any good. Which is bullshit and I need to stop thinking that right now. *Bad Shannon!!*

I wish there was a site like this for cartoon and comic artists. Maybe there is but I haven't found it yet... my Utopian Comic Illustrators Art site where people appreciate black outlines and non-realistic coloring and there is no Anime or Manga allowed. (Hey I can dream can't I? *grumble*)

Yeah I'm trying to decide how anthro I want to make the bugs.... and if I want to change the Chicago building to look more "natural" instead of like the real buildings. Soooo...... Page One is fleshed out. I decided to go with the recycled junk instead of normal "human" buildings. I searched Ebay and found vintage 1920's product packaging for inspiration... lots of cool old tins and metal boxes. :D

Still thinking about the vehicle construction... though cars had soft tops in the 20's so leaves will be used for the roofs. So 1/4 of the battle is done. LOL!

I'm fairly certain this will not be done by the March 1st deadline, because I think its going to be pretty funny and I want it to be done well instead of cramming it together to make it to poll for the POW challenge.

I somewhat missed your rant up top last time I swung by, but I love your style of art :D, I mean, I would kneel at Akihiko Yoshida's feet if I could. He did the Vagrant Story artwork, which I adore to the stars and back.

And it even incorporates slight... "manga-isms" into it: http://www.creativeuncut.com/profile_yoshida.html

My equally favourite Japanese artist would be the awesome stylings of Tetsuya Nomura: http://www.creativeuncut.com/profile_nomura.html

Again, "manga-isms" but that doesn't subtract anything from the art. In fact, I'd stake that Final Fantasy VII's success was in part due to the nice mix of manga stylings in it.

Fact of the matter is, i'd rather come out being able to draw awesomely detailed and fresh looking things like Mr Yoshida, than "just another" digital painter.

Not that I think less of digital painters, far from it, it's a really nice medium and the results can be breath-takingly realistic.

I just think if people want to stick with a comfortable style that works, then go for it! :D

Heck even the squid-faced Draenei of WoW agree with such things, "Favour the road travelled by few."

There is a megaton of competition in this industry, uniqueness might just save the day in the long run :)

It is DONE! Go here (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=152142)... vote for me! LOL! :)

Its insane how little people pay attention to POWs. Only 17 people have voted in over a week. :(

Hey! :)

I saw your stuff before (in CHOW) but hadn't realized you have a sketchbook. I do like your fun, colourful style a lot.

I wish there was a site like this for cartoon and comic artists. Maybe there is but I haven't found it yet... my Utopian Comic Illustrators Art site where people appreciate black outlines and non-realistic coloring and there is no Anime or Manga allowed. (Hey I can dream can't I? *grumble*)

I've been looking for a few years for such a community. Strangely, most of the comic/cartoon art forums I found seemed to have died down in 2006... :( I do love this site, but I also find that cartoons sorta take a back seat to 'Heavy Metal' style art. I figure I'd better draw more burly Vikings in order to network a bit and get to know other artists, which is what I was hoping for when joining.

Anyways. Hope you keep at it because I'm sure many people do enjoy your art and they *cough* deserve to see more! ;)

Cheers!

Thanks Sekino! Yeah I like this site a lot too... and even though I'm not interested in making Sci-Fi/Fantasy Illustration I have learned a lot and improved since I started doing those CHOWs. But yeah, sometimes I wish there were more people into cartoon and comic style art here. POW is proof we are few... ;)

So this is what I'm up to today.... a little "Toile ode de Puss" (my craptastic attempt at French... LOL!)

Thanks! I tweaked the blue glow a bit on the final... but I think this one turned out pretty good!

So the Darth Dominatrix huh? That was just a quickie joke but I may be persuaded to make a proper illustration out of it. :D

Right now I've got this "Goddesses of Kitsch" idea going on... combining Greco-Roman goddesses with traditional Pin-Up girl cliches. This first rough sketch is of Eris, Goddess of Discord as the Farmer's Daughter. LOL! Maybe I should make it official and post it in the "Projects" forum....

Thanks Kelly!

Yeah this "Lady" is actually a German Nazi Mae West. LOL! Its for the WWII Propaganda Poster CHOW.

At my work we are calling this weekend "Peaster"... since so many people I work with are Jewish and just had their Passover.
Its the new "Festivus"... (sorry, Seinfeld reference. LOL!)

Little bit of Non-CA related art *le gasp!*.... for a friend. Its my take on the giant Praying Mantis creature called Preytor from a game called "War of the Monsters". (I have no idea what that is... all I know is I was asked to draw it. LOL!)

haha, I like it a lot. You have great expressiveness in your paintings and such vibrant colors! Nice layout too. The screaming guy with the hat is awesome looking but his eyes could maybe be open a bit wider, and the guy's face next to him seems a little more stiff like he's maybe too posed and not a natural expression. I think it might just be the mouth. Keep 'em coming!

Thanks! If you haven't seen the "Mighty Boosh" show... you must go watch it immediately!!! LOL! They have a ton of clips on AdultSwim.com (http://www.adultswim.com/shows/themightyboosh/indexpage.html#videoAdultSwim.com)

Howard (the Hat guy) has squinty, small eyes (even when screaming) and they are always crackin' jokes about them.
Vince (long hair) is always posing and rarely "natural" looking. Often has that "Duh" look, so its actually a very fitting expression for him... ;)

Seriously... you gotta watch the show! Its so freakin' hilarious!

Thats his hitchin' thumb! He also plays Jazz Funk Slap Bass.... and with that giant thumb he can slap them strings like nobody's business!!! :xpld:

Seriously there are so many inside jokes in this poster, if you don't know the show none of it makes any sense and it looks like I don't know what the hell I'm doing. LOL! ;)

Unfortunately the "Team Chow (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=156801)" I was on didn't work out (too many unexpected real life delays) but these were my ideas for it... decided I'd share. :D

My thought was this is based in an alternate 1950's Los Angeles, where Hindu is the predominate religion on the planet (along with other multi-God religions, rather than Christianity, etc.) And they battle cheesy villains and B-Movie monsters. Basically its Bollywood meets Scooby-Doo meets Attack of the Giant Leeches. LOL!

These are my rough ideas... I'm posting the final designs in my "DeviantART" Gallery as I get them done. If you want to see them....

Hey man :)
To be frank, I dont like the team chow "Concepts" but Im really impressed by the research data and workflow. really good job preparing these. And the Hitcher impression is AWESUM. I watched many Mighty Booshes long time ago, and now seeing it here brought back the smile. Too bad they finished the series it was rocckin!

Anyway, cheers, Im watching you :P

Some nice characters in here, but some others seem a bit skewered anatomy wise (for toons as well - I'm not talking about realistic anatomy etc) - still when it works it's pretty ace, and the design is good :)

I really like the ant comic and the last piece on the previous page ~

keep it up

I know I haven't been on here in FOREVER... so sorry for the delay. Thanks to everyone who has popped in here!

Thanks Dan for your input! I know my anatomy is off a lot of the time. Especially with foreshortening... and I won't even start on how completely crap my hands are. *sigh*

But I likes ta' draw.... so I keep at it. :D
