Hello Im Lakeland.
Im 27 y.o.
I work as a graphic designer in advertisement. My main field
of work is everything between business cards and Large format prints.
I also work in Sony Vegas and Premier for 3D/photo/camera based commercial spots that are ment for indoor and outdoor city displays.

I got my self a Wacom Intuos 3 A5 Tablet 2 weeks ago and there was a spasm in my soul deep inside once I drew first line. I feel like that kid with his crayons back in the good old days, when I spent hours drawing "war & soldiers" or Teenage Mutan Ninja Turtles.

Anyway... I decided to start putting my "work" here since I realy dont have anyone to talk about it. I work basicly most of the day and live hour away from the city. That makes attending to any drawing classes too difficult to fit in the week's scheduel.

My main issues now is harnassing the power of the tablet. I work with Painter and Photoshop for effects and tuning. I admit that Im overwhelmed by it. I feel completely lost when it comes to tools like brushes and workflow.

Feel free to point out a direction I should go to develope my self in anyway.

Thanks in advance.

The story behind any picture helps to work.
King Ymir's chamber was clear and quiet... when he turned his sight away from the kingdom maps, a cloaked figure appeared.

Another one from today.
I decided not to use any colours untill I practice the light and shadow composition. So far it makes my work so much easier. I can focus only on the light and the geometry. Colors have this ability to distract me from importandt things in the scene.

Still having problems with perspective and angles, but I hope practice will make that come to perfection :)

And another pic i made today.
Im proud of the fog layer and I think the shadow light distribution went quite good on the stones. Still I think i missed the base floor surface here, making the perspective wrong, especially with the character there in the back. Seems to be off the ground and too small in size. oh well.

hehe... I made it to the point I crit my own work on this forum :D

Hello!
Really not a bad start in digital!!
I'd like to suggest you some things to read, that maybe can give you some suggestions or just inspiration...
- digital anatomy painting (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=199&t=259286)
- Cabrera's videoutorials (http://www.carloscabrera.com.ar/tutorials/) (free download)
I'm finding a lot of useful tips there, and I hope they can be of some utility for you too :)
Cya soon with new works I hope :D

Fun Stuff so far. First thought on how to improve would just be to let yourself have more time on each piece. I know you are probably skipping around right now though to have a chance to try different things. Have a good New Year!

Hi Lakeland,
Nice face studies. I like that you tried to tackle them from different angles.
One thing I would recommend is to check your proportions and proper placement first before you go into details. For example the eyes in your face study are usually too high - eyes are usually dead center in the head shape and I think it would make your faces more realistic.

Keep drawing!

WIll do batomaru :)
I realy appreciate the comments. The Fact is, I have never learn about anatomy nor light distribution... all I have are my observations and some theoretical knowledge.

Im taking a few days break from drawing now because I got like 20 hours of various tutorials. Figured out that instead of drawing all the stuff wrong, I can just sit on my ass and watch ALL of it :P

New pieces comming soon though :)

Aspenboy (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=86238) was kind enough to give me zillion of video tutorials sooo... As instructed :D i had my first 4 hours of anatomy class today :P yay

still alot of scribbling, but I try. And for all you fishes out there - it realy works!
so if you have any issues with drawing characters, you should realy start learning anatomy. These lectures realy helped me, and its just a start.

Hello.
Thanks to all for kind words :)
Aaanyway...
My pose studies started going realy wrong. It seems I cant add up all the knowledge I gain via body parts studies into a whole pose picture. I got a wee frustrated with my failures and decided to work on something that has breathing space. You'll find that high up in the mountains :D

Giving you my last year hike memory:
I left the colours a bit desaturated on purpose. I played with the brightness/contrast and saturation options but finally left it just the way I painted it.

Yo loving the landscape, but your SB is lacking in nudies!!! yeah I am one to speak, need to get my butt off the posts and draw some more. So as soon as I get all my zip files and brush sets installed on my old computer I will post some new anatomy studies and maybe a very crappy enviro, cause I suck at those.

spaztastic
January 17th, 2009, 10:16 PM
Oh and don't worry about getting frustrated, if you start to do that take a breather for a few days even a week, work on some stuff you love to do. Maybe enter into a EOW (enviro of the week) those contests seem to help me push myself to do better. I have to say anatomy takes a while to learn so don't feel bad OK you have lots of potential keep at it...cause I need people to keep telling me to get off my lazy arss and draw, (psst that means you)

Well, from looking at the 4/2 hour studies of legs you did, you sure have patience, which is one of the skills to have in this field i'd say.

I need to take more time on things too, though I'm always eager to see the finished piece, i'm a bad man.

Hello Again :D

Well I took Spazz's advice and had a week off. It timed perfectly with a job I got last week to do some 3D visualisations so that took major part of my work time. Now Im done, Im eager to start again where I left :)

Just for Spazzie ;) a nude piece Im started working on today.
Good thing about it that it was the first thing I sat down to and planned the whole image before drawing. That gave me some insight in a workflow I would realy like to follow in the future. Planning works good for me.

I started with some pose sketches. I figured out I want the girl to have lowered head and elevated chest and breasts, that would create a great angle between the head and torso. Also my wife noticed, that because of the size of her breasts, the boobie fat would migrate a bit, following the arms directions more than the chest direction, sort of giving in with the gravity. I also marked it with the direction arrows to keep it in mind during shading.

On the sketch it doesnt look good, but I figured Ill try fix it with light later on.

I established the values, then moved to some coloring. I figured that I went too dark with the colors, so I added more light and finally established the exact color pallette I was looking for.

Now Im working with these colors to finish the image :) and it works great so far.

I have realy good feelings about this image. It feels great working on it and I havent stumbled upon any major problems with it. Really relaxing and fun. Didnt have that for a long time.

spaztastic
January 24th, 2009, 09:30 AM
YAY Lakeland I love the nudie. I would say my only crit is to add some more color to her too make her pop more and seem more realistic. Like say add some blue, light brownish orange, a little pink and maybe a hint of purple. The blue will help to establish the 3d effect in the shadows and the translucent effect in the light. The Orangeish brown will had a touch of depth to the normal tan skin tone you have, the pink will show the blood underneath the skin, thus helping in the translucent aspect of it. the purple is just for fun. i would try to experiment with some different tones that better suite your pallet those are my fav for skin color. I really like this pose it shows a vast improvement from you first poses. KEEP IT UP!!! Oh one more thing, her left boobie/right side of screen is smaller than her right boobie/left side of screen this is mostly a lighting issue.... just add a little more depth to her left boob and this will be even awesomeerererr!!!
P.S
Thanks for the encouragement. and I really really love this pic can't wait to see it finished!!!
*hugs*

Lakeland
January 24th, 2009, 11:01 AM
Lol I actually saw that now. the left boob(screen wise) beign larger..
All the time I was keeping in mind, that this boobie is somewhat pressed flat because of the skin stretching backwards, following the arm. I knew it would appear bigger because of that but didnt actually see that till now :D

hmm.. I wonder how to fix that... I ll play with the colors for sure, and I hope that will do it.

Vehkt
January 24th, 2009, 11:23 AM
Humans arent symmetrical, so it's plausible she just has two different sized boobs :D.

One thing that makes me wonder... which might just be my lack of lighting studies, but the light from the window is broken across her breasts by, presumably, the arm...

Is it the arm which is also somehow projecting the break in window light across her stomach? Actually, looking at it, the breast break could be the window frame and the stomach break her would be her arm...

But then her arm would catch some of the window light... maybe they're both breaks from the window frame :D.

good to hear that you finally was able to paint in a relaxed and fun way!!
The painting is nice, I'm sorry I can't give so many crits, since painting for me is still a painful land :p
But if you want to experiment more on her, you could simply go back to the sketch and try a brand new approach, in colours and tecnique..maybe it could help you to fix some issues you had and to feel free to experiment and learn something new.
Btw...updaaaaate!!! :D

Lakeland
January 26th, 2009, 03:57 PM
Hello, and thanks for the repies.
I took a closer look to the boobies, and started working on the face.
Since Im not a brush virtuoso (yet) it takes me alot of time to fix and progress with stuff. 2 days further into the image and I post an update so that you dont get the impression I slack ;P

Boobies got fixed and rendered in a fashion im satisfied with at the moment, Today I spent 3 hours with the face and while Im satisfied with the distribution and proportions It still needs major work with light and color.
Im not entirely sure what needs a fix there so followin Alice's advice I tend to experiment alot there. Often during my work I go step further just to take two steps back and change something basic and start over.

I wouldnt call my self a patient person... but I sure am stubborn as hell :D
Thats a start I think ;)

January 26th, 2009, 05:25 PM
Painting is coming along nicely! I see what you mean about the mystery of the face, my eyes keep getting drawn to her eyes... I wonder if they're centered okay, sometimes it's all about where the eyes are looking :D.

I decided not to work on this piece anymore since the more time I spent on it the more things I want to change, redo and such. This one made me learn ALOT and somehow I want to go further from there instead of spin in circle with it.

I like the direction you are going in. Keep practicing and don't be scared to look for reference and make colour studies. I think they really help you a lot in understanding the colours that make up skin for example. Your palette is still too muddy.
Enviros are nice, but try adding more details and pushing the mood in a clear direction.

Cheers

And it seems IM back on the track.
My injury got healed with time, I still have some tests to do, Ive spent some time in hospital. Hospitals in my country arent so pretty, they resemble more a place where you go to die. Weird thing about that.. ever since I got back from the hospital Im so filled with saddness... seems I cant see all the nice places in my head anymore.
I was trying to finish that enviro I started long before all that but nothing in this pic seems sure to me anymore. Im not sure about the colors, forms nor the composition...

I hope with time and more drawing Ill be able to re establish my self - within my self. Get my view cleared up. once more see thru the third eye ;)

Value on rocks is nice and the blocking of the houses is nice, still very rough though. What doesn't work for me are the bridge (where is it going to? perspective on that?) and the water (no values, no colour).

The view and concept are nice though and you are improving.

aspenboy
March 7th, 2009, 09:56 AM
It's really good to see you back here, mate :)

I think you're moving in a good direction with this enviro. What you may want to change is the way you're building the structure of the rocks - that big greyish mountaing on the left side is deeper, so I would say that it could be more blurred (there're lots of thin horizontal strokes - that doesn't help to build the depth, as it is to similar to what is in the front/first plane).

If you're not sure about the colors at the moment, you may try switching to greyscale - that will help you make decisions about what is more important in the picture. And you can always get back to laying down the colors with new layer in color mode - still some tweaking will be needed later on, but it is sometimes easier to think in b&w.

Not sure really if what I wrote above is clear :/ If you feel you're stuck - experiment with your own workflow. Sometimes it works for me :)

Regarging third eye - it somehow always reminds me this piece:

part 1

part 2

(sorry, couldn't resist ;) )

Whilst a negative mindset does pull you away from the tranquil environments in your imagination, you could see if it would result in a nice dark environment, some evil warlord's citadel or something.

ok so here are the hands. I used the ref pics from pose maniacs instead of drawing my own aand to be honest... I find them completely out of proportions. not only they dont keep the 1/1, 2/3, 2/3 finger bones ratio, the shape of the finger tips is sort of managa'ish... weird. and the base of the palm there is flat and seems totaly miss the base bone.

oh well.. Ill try with my own hands later today.

Chow #158 update.

So I made this travelling mage concept, The pic was going great till I started messing with the background. I was working on a single layer so thats a new one. Sadly, I was working on a white background as well, instead of transparent one. I thinkg the values on the char went quite good, but the white background was too bright. When I cut out the silhouette, and placed the character on a darker layer, that nasty white outline came out.
pure technical mistake :/ oh well.
Another lesson learned.

Thanks Spazz :)
Id be grateful for some more, indepth crits and maybe guidelines ? f.e. Im looking for a online anatomy study reference or/and resource site. I know pose maniacs, but when it comes to body details, this site sucks. I need something else. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

Aaaand for my next idea, a breath of freedom in the everlasting hell of anatomy studies, I present you a stage of work on the SPACE HAWK ! and imaginative space ship / concept art :)

here id like to thank Edward B. for sharing his secrets of shading his works, That helps alot here, and I realy like where this one is going.

first Auto Portrait, using techniques and various tips from Zhang Lu and Jason Manley, Digital Painting tutorial. Thanks alot for sharing this knowledge guys.

Anyway. Here it is, I seem to missed the overbite of the jaw a bit, due to mouth shading I guess, cant exactly pin point the cause of the "lack of roundess" there, compared to the photo. The picture was taken while I was starting to say something, thats why the jaw is a bit too big than it is in normal, not talking mode ;).

its weird to work with no comment in your sketchbook.
Its gives you something to think about.
First thing that comes in my mind is: the thread isnt popular enough to be visited.
But After I visited couple of sketchbooks, wrote stuff in various threads around the forum, gave the sketchbook link to dozen of friends and started a community activity thread - I still get no replies here, that would help me on my way, I start to think I really suck.

And thats a bad thing to think about.

Anyway.
My wife was kind enough to pose for me.
The more I study her body the more Im in love.
Some men like to gloat about knowing every inch of their partners body.
I get that literally.

Good stuff, I like your studies. Nice progress too! I think you could experiment more with texture. For example, the painting of the ship in post #95. It looks kind of empty and too clean.

Keep it up!

And Im quite happy with it :)

Part of MCW thing. the idea was to work on a face template with all sorts of facial features of your design.
So the value work was not as important as the concept.

Nice progress dude. That last enviro is a great leap forward.

The Molten Core workshop of yours is a great idea, got me finally practicing eyes which I've been avoiding far too long. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

My 57:
That one is an effect of chaos and accident really :D
I was playing with custom brushes and it suddenly was there.
The main object in the centre and to the right, the sort of metal debris is actually a single brush stroke. I started with it. then added the heated lava river building it with a brush i originaly created to fill hair texture, and a spray brush. Then came the building walls and setting it all in right perspective.
The metal side walks are just a plain square treated with a custom brush eraser that made the holes in it. Then copy/paste as long as i wanted, joined into single layer and adjusted to the perspective using Transform Selection/Distort tool.

Rest of the work was just hand made lighting and playing with the layer modes. lots of Color Dodge, Color burn for the color (obvious :) ) and multiply for shadows. Some soft light here and there.

Ismo: Thanks :) and you re welcome :) I have alot on my head these days, but MCW is starting with the regular assignments at the end of next week. around 22.07

and yeah... i do need more studies.. and a real ones too, drawing off ref pix sucks long term. Theres nothing like the real light and form standing near to you. I just need to arrange some posing and do sketches. Its a MUST!

I kept working on the above and something totally different came out of it.

Note:
Once you break certain project line, the possibilites where you can take that project are limitless. I get the feeling that every hour of work reveals ways of finishing the picture I havent seen earlier. Thats just amazing.

another lesson learned.
After failure at building the character with lines and geometry I decided to sculp it with light and hard spot brush. Seems like thinking in "spots" and color blocks, works better for me than construction drawing.

You're making really nice progress with this value study! For the drawings - you're dealing with quite difficult poses I must say. I think you could work a bit on the feets and legs: first one from the right handside is floating a bit, the same feeling I have with the second one from the left. Anyway, it's good to see you're moving forward :)

hey lakeland, youve got a great sketchbook set up here, i really like your muscle and body studies, theyre greaet.

it looks like faces are difficult for you...i would highly recommend reading Burne Hogarth's book Drawing the Dynamic Head....its a short book but after i read it i was able to draw faces so much better it was incredible

keep up the great work

Hey you!
Thanks for stopping by :)
As to the faces, well... to be honest I havent gotten to that part yet :P
I just picked up the topic. In my whole life I think I drew only like 20-30 faces, most of which are here in the SB ;), keep in mind I only started drawing a year ago or so.
I will check that Hogarth's book as I ve heard about it from other people, its good they say. Now you acknowledge that, I must go and find it. Thanks again!

I'm not sure if you're aware of that, but you've made a huge progress since your first post :) Just keep it up, and remember that you can learn a lot from every single sketch you've made - even if you feel that the sketch is a complete fail ;)

Im just stubborn and been unemployed for the past 6 months or so ;P, that gave me extra time and a kicker: work on my skills - get a better job. Last month I completed my portfolio and got an awesome job in a advertisment company. Drawing skills are not always in use there, but they give a major understanding of pure commercial graphic design.

Hi!
some doodles done in free time.
last few months were dedicated to my newly acquired job. expanding into graphic design taught me few lessons and my full energy reservoire was depleted on learning new stuff. Drawing went into the closet, but here it is. I hope for two big commercial illustrations comming up and loads of wips along with it.
