View Full Version : Mold Making from Plastilina Sculpts?

I've been working on sculptures and my husband made a point about making a mold from them since it will have to be destroyed due to the plastilina being a soft material. I'm wondering if, after having made the mold and having had it set, would I be able to safely put it in the freezer to harden the material? Would that affect the mold?

What molding product would be best to use with plastilina?
And, are there any good threads here on CA for me to check out on this?

Thanks :)

There is a sculpture forum:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=10

My guess is plasticene would crack in the cold with any kind of stress put on it (like removing it from a mold), but I'm sure guys who are serious about sculpting in that forum will know much better than I.

I wasn't sure whether to ask here or there, and since it looked more like it was sharing processes rather thank asking questions I made the jump of asking here :E

Molding with roma plastalina is pretty standard. Back in my college days, it's pretty much all we used (plastalina+plaster).

It will, of course, completely destroy the sculpture...but that is the point. At that point you can clean out all the clay and you have a nice mold to use. Of course, I don't know what kind of material you want to put in the mold. For me, I was making masks/props so it was easy to just make a mold using basic plaster and that was sturdy enough to handle the latex.

It's been a few years, so I am a little rusty on other more durable mold materials. I know we used silicon and fiberglass molds, but I don't remember if they were ever used with plastalina. For that we always always just used plaster, as I said.

Either way...definitely check out the sculpture forum, I'm sure there are a lot of people who have significantly more up to date knowledge on it than myself.
