Hi all
I haven't posted here for a while, but I regularly visit and enjoy the show.
I have recently started doing life drawings again, and I plan to slowly use these opportunities to explore new mediums for me. Watercolors are in the top list, sculture might be, too. It strucked me lately that I have almost used digital for my stuff in the last ten years - missing out on the 4000 years of others tools used to create art before the computer. I'm not really planning to start painting in a cavern with ashes, or having elks posing for me, but everything in-between that and heavy curtains-to-avoid-light-on-the-screen sounds good to me, right now.
If I can do an okayish sketch everyweek, I'll be happy to share it here.

thanks for the encouraging words Davy and rusty.
El coro, cheers, all's fine, I'm doing less "fantasy" works at the moment, trying out other directions with me works...one of these break/rebuilt times. I saw here you did an exhibition of your own work lately, congrats.
Time to break the spell I put on Davi with this ;) I had 2 small hours to scult a study of a woman, looking back at it, I did a fine orc with a skin disease and flat feet.
The best part for me was how lost I was in the first 2 hours, trying to shape/model that pile of earth. That took over the study of shapes, but a great learning experience it was.

Your figure drawings are really nice. I like how you get the lines right with just one stroke. That's something I'd like to do.
Occassionally you seem to be not drawing the face. Do they feel finished without them to you, or are you worried about messing up?

davi : the purpose of doing these is for me to study and -hopefully - learn something ( evening atelier, no school or teacher ) I felt I was stuck working with bad habits, lately. I try not to freeze my stuff in any cheap formula, although it's almost impossible to avoid, when doing commercial art for a living. aaanyway ;)
mtw : thanks for pointing that out, I didn't realised it yet. i guess they're not my point of interest so far, I try to see the body as a whole. and I mostly do really short poses, so you gotta make choices. I'll probably concentrate on faces later on...
see you guys in 2004, thanks!

Wow, this thread is incredible!
Beet, how do you get so much info down so quickly, with such great economy? Does it come naturally, or did you spend a lot of time learning the forms of the body through anatomy studies and life drawing (I mean slower, more detailed life drawing)?
I would love to be able to draw like that.
How big do you do those life drawings? Also, it seems you must draw from the shoulder... rather than laying your wrist on the paper and moving just your hand... right?
beet
May 19th, 2004, 03:44 AM
Ron : thanksalot!
Darkstrider : I mostly studied anatomy with... an anatomy book. down to the bones, the way the muscles are attached to the structure, tendons, etc ... probably the stuff they teach in good anatomy classes, i guess. but for me it was through a book. doesn't matter the way, once you get a good understanding of it, it actually change the amount of information you'll be able to grab from the drawing sessions. I have no real method to talk about, except that I don't think much ( conciously, of the place of this and that ) while doing the short poses, I may try to get into a rythm instead ( of observation / line ) ?? sorry, no real method to share. I'm carefull enjoying my drawing time, though.
about the practise of life drawings i have, i only started recently.
the drawings usually fits in my scanner, as a matter of fact, but it's a not a rule ( sometimes bigger, it depends of the medium, mostly ) I don't know about the shoulder thing, ahaha.

Oh my! What an excellent bunch of paintings!
I must say that you really encouraged me when you said that it worked for you studying anatomy from books. I'm currently doing exactly the same thing (Loomis and some other books, an lots of reference photos), and I guess I'll be doin it for a long time though... but I feel that it is worthed the energy invested. I'm still at the beginning but I can already see some progress ;)
Once again - Great work, really simplistic and fresh!

goldi: to be exact, I think book like loomis's are ok to start with ? maybe? but I would also encourage you to look at some pure anatomy books, where they don't teach any method. Take the information you need from them, and run away ... the goal is to learn to draw from life, not books.
Anyway, many roads to Rome...

Icey : nothing new I'm afraid
I recently went through the pile of drawings from last year, found these oldies. probably the only update of the summer.
btw Darkstrider : I found out that I was mostly drawing bigger than what I told you, couple of months ago - often on cheap newsprints paper, and actual drawing, quite larger than the a4. you must have asked while i was in a special phase :)

Egets : I'll check Gregg Kreutz's works. I don't know him, sounds interesting.
I went to a Martial Art event this weekend. I got the chance to sit, watch and fill a great number of pages of unfinished stuff. Gesture drawings, I guess. Even One-Minute-poses will now be bliss to me, next time I'm doing nude drawings ; These guys were constantly moving...
All in all, a great experience in concentration and visual memory.

I really like what you do! It's good to see I'm not alone liking these, my teacher at the evening life drawing classes would call it 'comics', because he wouldn't see a huge pile of messy construction lines, duh. :nohope:
I think it's a little stressful but also exciting to try to draw in this way, trying to make each line to tell something, hit or MISS. I love it, I seem to MISS a lot more than you HIT with those though :D
I wonder if you read a lot of graphic novels as a kid ? Just curious because I suspect thats why I like this clear line style. As a kid I sometimes copied these, unware that most of the artists worked on much larger sizes and that what I copied was the 'inking'. Did you like Pratt, Manara, Caza, Moebius, etc... ? (french graphic novel artists)
I like the guy sitting, the suggestion of his 'sword', and the folds of his robe, that's great!

good stuff
i like to see a line where the body meets the ground
then like a architect build a high rise building up wards from floor up
like a chair on the floor start with the legs and find their postion
then draw the lines upwards then move up to the seat then the
arm rest then the back of the chair.
so you find the position of the knees lying down on the ground
from the pelvis and the toes.
then starting with the knee closes to the floor move upwards to leg that
above that knee this wil help with foreshorting.
so using invisible lines going up to the ceiling u find the points on the floor
where her pelvis bone hits were the knee bone hits were the out position
of the foot go straight up like a building or vertical beams.
