ROUND #140 :: BETTY PAGE TRIBUTE
DESCRIPTION
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bettie_Page
http://www.bettiepage.com/obit/index.html
Bettie Page passed away last week on Dec. 11. For those of you who did not know her, she was a beautiful woman and a pinup model in the 40's and 50's, inspiring much of the art from that time period.
This round is meant as a tribute, and thus has some different rules from other Chow rounds.
1) This is not strictly speaking a 'character design' round. You will be drawing Bettie. Instead, we are going to work with the format that you are designing the character that Bettie will be *playing* in the image. You may use themes/characters that she was well known for (ie. Bondage Vixen, Jungle Queen, Girl Next Door), OR you may invent entirely new characters that you believe stay true to Bettie's spirit. (Feisty sci-fi, anyone?)
2) You are asked to please do this in the style of a pin up. We would like to see the layout and composition of the images reflect the time period and the spirit.
3) You are asked to remain respectful in the thread - this is dedicated to her memory. That being said, please have fun.
Thank you.
------------
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?
--------------------
SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/ChowPics/frame.jpg
:right: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
:right: SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:
Chow##_Nickname
example: "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg"
THE REST IS EASY:
1: No comments before poll is set. They WILL be deleted with utmost malice and petty grumbling. >:{
2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
3: Good luck to all.

My first CHOW... I'm very excited! :D
Hope the size is ok... I can post it bigger if necessary.
WIPS:
Rough Sketch (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=542929&stc=1&d=1229540623) - LineArt (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=543168&stc=1&d=1229563713) - Background Added (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=543503&stc=1&d=1229618189)
So my Bettie is playing another sexy Betty.... Betty Rubble!
The Flintstones first aired in 1960, if Bettie had stuck it out modeling a few more years she may have turned up in this costume. LOL!
Farewell Bettie... the last of the great 1950's pop culture icons.

Here's my final.
I didnt really know who she was before this chow. Amazing to see how much she had clearly influenced lots of art that has inspired me over the years.
I used a pose of her I found for reference, I am sure most of you will recognise the one from your own research, and given her a modern twist 'cowboy style'!! (That's me by the way, lol)
Here's to you Bettie. :yayca:

Hello! This is my first post. I love what I've been seeing on this website! I hope to learn a lot. My original concept was Betty as Eve but I was struggling with it so I went with Fairy Betty instead. R.I.P. Betty Page.

daestwen - quick idea about the gallery in the Finally Finished section: due to the different sizes of the entries, the spacing in the thread as it is, makes the images look crowded in spots. Maybe if it isn't to difficult or time consuming the entries could be more evenly spaced. It would help it seem more like a gallery thread that way. As it stands, it seemed a bit jumbled to me. Anyway just a suggestion. :^^:
Everyone did a great job this week! I'll be back to post some actually crits when I get a bit more time. For now Happy Holidays to everyone! :teeth:

So, I've been thinking... and the more I think about it the more it seems to me that its a shame that there isn't going to be a poll for this weeks CHOW. Don't get me wrong I really like the idea of the gallery thread and the post in the Finally Finished is very nice. However, even though this was a tribute CHOW and therefore some rules where altered this week, there where a lot of really nice images made and a lot of hard work put into this topic, and it seems kind of sad to me that none of them will be added to the Queen's Court. There are certainly some worthy pictures here. It's just that the Court thread is a much more permanent thread than the Finally Finished section which moves pretty quickly. Even this Final Burning thread will be lost in a couple of weeks. I don't know... maybe its just me
I don't want to step on anyone's toes or up set anyone it was just a thought. Deastwen, I'm sorry if I'm stepping out of line. If so... then just smack me upside the head and I promise I'll quietly keep my thoughts to myself... thinking is dangerous after all. :P
Anyway just my two cents.
Take care,
Adam
Pixeltuner
December 23rd, 2008, 09:30 AM
In my opinion we're all doing this for ourselves. All the hard work and late hours are because we love doing this and want to get better at it. Not because of some poll or a chance to join 'the queens court' which, although an honour and an achievement on it's own, is not why I'm doing this.
Adam Schumpert
December 23rd, 2008, 10:07 AM
:S No no.... please don't misunderstand me I totally agree with you Pixeltuner. I'm doing these CHOWs mainly to force myself to make time for my art (I find with my busy scheduel that if I have a deadline I actually will find the time to do it), and to become a better artist. Well that and to get help, feedback, and encouragement from other artists. :teeth:
The last thing I want anyone to think is that this is about me personally getting to poll. In fact I wouldn't be upset or hurt if I was excluded from a poll by bringing this up. I'm very honoured as it is that I've gotten to participate in this at all and that the community here has been kind enough to give me some comments and crits.
Still, shouldn't this topic and the artwork produced for it get the chance to earn the same honour as other CHOWs?
Pixeltuner
December 23rd, 2008, 10:29 AM
Hey, don't fret. My reply came out a bit harder than it should. And I was certainly NOT thinking you were upset about not going to poll. :)
I understand your gripes, but since this topic wasn't really a 'character design' round per se and more of a 'draw Betty with a nice outfit' (not to downplay anyone's submission of course) it shouldn't be judged as a CHOW methinks. So in that light I agree with Daestwen to put it in the Finally Finished section.

...since this topic wasn't really a 'character design' round per se and more of a 'draw Betty with a nice outfit' (not to downplay anyone's submission of course) it shouldn't be judged as a CHOW methinks. This attitude couldn't be farther from the mark imo. Bettie Page was as much a "character" in her own right as any of the many literary characters that have been interpreted in CHoWs, and learning about her and trying to produce an image that is consistent with her iconic status while achieving something fresh and not overly derivative is what I saw as the essential nature of the brief. Just a babe in a costume is a bit of an insult to her memory, as I see it.
Adam Schumpert
December 23rd, 2008, 11:17 AM
I must say I agree with masque. Is this week's topic really that different from CHOW 138 Countess Bathory? They both are historic figures, they both left an enduring legacy, and we were given creative licence in the brief with how we depicted thier legacy. The only real difference, other than suspending the one image only rule, was that Bettie's likness was more important. Of coarse her likeness and personality are her legacy so naturally that would be more important.
For the record I'm not compairing the people here just the CHOW challanges of the two totally different people. :P

One of the major crits I have about many of the images presented, no matter how well-rendered or how good a likeness has been achieved, is that they are way anachronistic. Bettie Page was not a WWII era pinup (that was Betty Grable and other movie stars for the most part) -- she didn't even start modeling until around 1950. Even a small amount of research beyond scanning her stock of imagery would have turned that up. So putting her in the forties either by context or style of portrayal is just off-base in terms of her character. Good work all around, some solid swings at the subject, but also some clean misses.
daestwen
December 23rd, 2008, 01:01 PM
Both the Finally Finished Thread and this one will be linked in the Queen's Court thread, so they won't be lost to oblivion.
I still don't think a poll is appropriate given the intention of the CHOW, but trust me we won't lose the entries!

Bettie was too young to make it on a bomber she would have had to be legally 17 years old, she was a WWII pin-up in calenders, in the men's collections and was a WWII pin-up in print. I just put her on a bomber because I thought it would be cool--she was not actually a fairy either, but well taken and you are absolutely correct. I did the research and was bummed she was not a bomber gal so I made her one anyways, creative license I guess, but you are correct? -- of two artist's.

Thank you.
This was the original challenge, so I think a lot of us just used creative license. It was difficult to do a real portrait, and I felt a bit sad, that I couldn't catch her "spirit" that was so special in many of the photos.
I think there was a lot of interesting, exciting and imaginative work, that was done as a result. Like others mentioned, I also do this to learn. I have already learned a lot here at CA, thanks to you guys, the deadlines, the challenges, and working hard.
My brother just arrived for Christmas and he's been critting me. He's a pro, so it's been really helpful and he makes my stuff look tons better, with just a few lines, lol... I know I'm far from my goal. I hope to keep going, learn lots more and hopefully, one day, be able to help others a lot more, than I am able to, today.
Congrats to all, for hard work, much learned and may you have a great holiday.

The style was pin up, but it was pretty free reigns since it was a tribute, that's why there's wips of her being a space pilot and lara croft, etc. :)
Also, do not forget she actually *was* a war pinup, I read somewhere in one of the memory places that during the Korean war, a Bettie poster or magazine shoot was more worth in getting the spirits up than fresh reinforcements, and the less clothes, the more soldiers she was worth. ;)

December 23rd, 2008, 03:28 PM
DauDau = I'm glad your brother is helping you, I think you captured her spirit, I looked at all of the pieces and all spirit was captured!!
Sorkness Hi, thanks your right and I knew she was a war pin-up but I had the wrong war (The Korean War was my b-oinked out Uncle's war, he wouldn't even talk about it!! I feel so bad for him)... I saw tons of posters of her expressly for War time, I wanted a flying tiger for my friends grandpa, he flew one, but, your right in general that free reigns ruled this... ha ha laura croft bettie, she could even be 2008 modern Bettie, pretty open and great.
Merry Christmas to all.

I think Betty Page was just someone with lesser clothes on then most people in the 50's. Maybe that made here special, but don't overdo this and just have a poll, witch is, besides making the art, is part of the fun.

Er, that's not what I meant at all. I'm just clarifying why I think it doesn't have a poll and that has nothing to do with my so called 'attitude' towards this or any other CHOW or Bettie Page for that matter.

Here's my submission. Late, but being that its a tribute, I wanted to send it in.
The colors are kind of weird. Worked on a new monitor and when I moved it to another computer, realized the colors were way off. I think the monitor was set to movie mode, so everything was ultra saturated when I was working on it. Tried to save it but I think I just made the colors garish. Oh well, lesson learned.
Thanks!

I think I know what your saying??
But, ...Bettie is an American Icon and don't dis the Bettie! She made it and made it huge for being own person when women were not really making a name for them selves period. She did not do it through dating some rich guy who put her in films or anyone really helping her at all... at times she was misguided and even put in jail at one point for being very different for the era...
Any of us would have been put in jail or given a lobotomy for some of the things we've done that are just considered normal now -- (look up Francis Farmer, given a Lobotomy for being zany)
Let her be outstanding for who she was and how very progressive she was for her time and basically someone who had an unbridled zest for life. :sungod:
I don't think it would matter if their was a poll or not though, these are two different subjects.
Uglyographer=I lvoe your piece!!! Nice gesture fingers and style!!

I don't really think polls are appropriate in a tribute setting - no matter who the tribute is for, or the level of respect you think they deserve. Tribute rounds are about celebrating a memory, not competition. I don't consider it 'over done' at all, and honestly people put focus way more attention to the polls than they really deserve anyway.

So, I've been thinking... and the more I think about it the more it seems to me that its a shame that there isn't going to be a poll for this weeks CHOW.
I have to say it kinda feels like there was a "Go to Poll" with all those images in the Finally Finished section. I was expecting to see only 3-4 images with a link back to here... not half the entries.
Yes mine was excluded, and no I'm not taking it personally. I know my Bettie turned out well and I had fun, which is the important part. I'm going to wait for the next one with an actual poll to see how I really fair in these CHOWs... before I start to take it personally. :P

I agree with Shannanigan, It definitely felt like more of a "go to poll" here. But I had fun non-the less and it was well worth it to get myself to actually draw and finish something. I have been suffering from artist/new mom block for several weeks now. And these challenges, even if I don't win, help to correct that problem.

Haha, no no. They are just weird from how I originally painted it. You know, weird to me.

Ok, since everyone has put their two cents in. I might as well too. I hope I do not insult anyone, because I mean nothing in an insulting way.
From the moment I read the brief and saw the word "tribute" I immediately thought of what the word meant. A compliment or praise given. We were giving Bettie Page a gift in passing of what she had achieved in life.
I enjoyed doing this. It was nice, for once, not having to create something for poll but for a person.
Daestwen, I felt, conducted the whole thing quite differently from the way normal CHOWs run. (Keeping in mind, I have only been here but for a short time, and have not participated in that many CHOWs)
I appreciated the opportunity to do this, not to create a piece for myself, but for Bettie. No matter what you thought of her, or even if you never heard of her before, this was meant as a gift for her. At least, that's the way I understood it.
Also, I think the reason Daestwen chose so many was the simple fact that it would be hard to choose! Even if she was just going to do 3-4, think of all the choices she had to go through and how many different styles. That's a big responsibility! :)
Now, I do understand that we are all just expressing opinions on how we thought it was going to happen. So, hope I didn't step on any toes or anything. :) I'm just putting my thoughts in too.
Great work people! Beautiful pieces and thanks for all the help on my piece. I felt I learned a lot.
Uglyographer - I love the colors too! It looks beautiful.

Please please please delete the post above trying to sell us golf clubs. I dont know about anyone else but I hate it when people do this. Not only does it insult our Bettie tribute, it insults dedicated chow-ers with something usefull to contribute.
Many thanks.

Thanks, cowboy. Usually I see them and delete them right away, but I've been a little busy over the holiday. :)

And this was kind of the point.
Honestly, it took me nearly two hours to decide what to put in the final burning thread. I was only planning to take five or so, but just couldn't choose... so much awesomeness was made in this round! I'm sorry if any of you feel slighted, I was honestly trying to cut it down as far as I could but I was pretty proud of all of you, so...
Actually I'm always proud of you guys, but this round really restored my faith. :)
