heya, been looking around here a lot and decided i need to draw more. so i'm gonna try to keep up with a sketchbook on here and see if that helps to give me motivation. i do digital work in my illustrations, but i'm pretty sure i'm gonna keep all my studies in traditional media, mostly graphite.

wow cool skull

Hi there, nice sense of taste, like the skulls. So much buty in these things, what could make them even better is to studie them closer and find more of that crispy variation that excists in the form.
And a suggestion whenit comes the studies, think about what you want to studie and observ, for example the hands, if it was the form you wanted to get to read, make an adventure to discover the planes that makes up the form.
And your doing the right, to keep to drawing, it's the hardest thing to master I believe. And it'll amke all the work so much easier when you start painting. Bacuse then you can focus on the colors and those relationsships and you don't have to juggle to many balls at once.
One question, do you like the work of Odd Nerdrum?
Good luck, cheers.
*ViRuS*
December 22nd, 2008, 10:27 PM
thanks yoonate, that was a fun one to draw. =)
Pencilator, Nerdrum is one of my favorite artists. he's one of the few artists when i see their work in person i feel something. ya know? but yeah, trying to improve with the drawings, thanks for the kind words. =)
all the skull stuff is old. i did some hand studies the other day, and the only thing i did today was a single hand study from life- been a busy couple of days, haven't had a chance to draw as much as i'd like.

couldn't sleep so i found myself roaming the forums. here's the first page from my sketchbook- a 3hr skull study. goin home for a week or so, so no updates for a while, but i should have some nice stuff to show when i'm back from new york. i plan on hitting up the Met. should be fun =)

My my, I can see some admirable modelling with the cross-hatching.
Lovely skull, the details gives it a punch.

Cool to hear that, Nerdrum is cool. A bit Odd but cool. I've meet him once at a lecture at my school. Work your but of and go study with him. :)
Merry christmas man.

January 5th, 2009, 01:19 AM
Fitzin - thanks man =) that skull was a lot of fun to work on
Pencilator - lol, i'd love to study with him, but i doubt that'll ever happen =) hope your holiday season went well
been busy doing layouts for a short story comic job i got, but i did take a trip to the met, and i got one good/decent drawing outta that. heh... i'll do more soon.

Wow, man...really diligent work! I want to see more! The skull and hand studies are all really gorgeous...nice use of color too...love those washes...the anatomy stuff looks good as well, though it seems like you're generalizing some of the forms, think about doing some muscle studies, it helps to really know what's under the surface! I'm sure you've done those before though, it looks like you've got a pretty good handle on it.
Also, thanks a bunch for those comments you keep dropping on my self portrait thread, it keeps me going! Thank you!
*ViRuS*
January 12th, 2009, 12:49 AM
RandAlThor - thanks =)
sketcheth - hey man, thanks for the kind words. the reason i didn't do muscle studies in those drawings is because the muscles weren't really defined enough to give me confidence that they're the right ones in the right place. and i'd rather not draw it, than draw it wrong. ya know? i should do a few of those however, never hurts to refresh your memory. keep up the awesome work man.
some minor updates: been busy working on design/code of a website for the gallery i show in. just finished it tonight, should be up and running in a month with full artwork and such... but it's kept me from drawing as much as i'd like to...
worked more on the drawing today, hope to get a lot done tomorrow on it...
and i put in an older drawing i did based off of a sketch by ingres.
*ViRuS*
January 12th, 2009, 11:15 PM
had a down day today, didn't feel like doing much. so i put in a movie and found myself pausing it and drawing the people i was seeing. also a blue seashell. (part of one anyways).
worked more on the paintings, i'll post a shot or two after the next few layers.
Niva.
January 13th, 2009, 12:02 AM
I like dark and disturbing stuff... therefore I like what's in this sketchbook so far :)
I find the one with the key holes on their faces most disturbing.
I also don't want to offer nitpick critique because you're clearly aware of your mistakes and you're doing some studies which are going to help correct your issues. Keep up!
*ViRuS*
January 14th, 2009, 05:59 AM
thanks n1va, i tend to always draw/paint darker things, even if i don't mean to, heh...
couldn't sleep. start school again tomorrow (today), figured i'd finish off the graphite drawing part of the illustration i'm working on...

January 14th, 2009, 06:16 AM
Hi virus, nice start.
Your stronger studies are in the first and second post, you have some nice pencil work there.
Keep it up.
cheers
*ViRuS*
January 14th, 2009, 09:05 PM
thanks for the kind words voraz, those posts were the studies, where as the other work is just graphite stuff that's planned to be taken further. like the angel of death that i just finished playin around with. =)
been workin on the key hole people paintings, i hope to have them done by the first tuesday in feb. we'll see.

*ViRuS*
January 16th, 2009, 02:18 AM
thanks kuroart, yeah, i seem to do a lot better when i'm drawing from life. =)
here's a materials test i did tonight. i have my figure class tomorrow, and it's the first time in a month that i'm gonna get to use a model from life, so i wanted to test out colors/materials/techniques so i can just get down to the drawing. =)
sketcheth
January 18th, 2009, 12:24 AM
Wow that's a beautiful color. You've done a lot of nice stuff since I stopped by last! I think that pausing movies thing is a good idea...I should do that more...not that I need an excuse to watch movies...
The graphite illustration looks really nice, I just wish it was a little sharper in certain areas of the figure...those gash things are really powerful in how sharp they are and I wish that was continued throughtout.
Keep up the real nice work and thanks for the comments, dude!

I really like the portrait of the woman, it's quite lovely the contrasting warm and cool tones you've laid on top of one another....fantastico. Also the man right above her...excellent lighting...wow...that really just glows. Keep it up! I'm hoping I can get into a figure drawing class this semester...looks so fun!

=)
new sketchbook- gonna just draw a lot and see what happens. not always from life/long studies, just whatever i feel like.
it's really shitty paper though, feels like regular copy paper from a printer =/
oh well... here's an oil painting i finished. it's a quote from dali, and a pose from a nerdrum painting, with my face on it. it's for fun.
two model drawings in charcoal.
and a page from the shitty sketchbook =)

February 1st, 2009, 01:33 AM

February 1st, 2009, 02:20 AM
Nice mate. I'm liking the skull drawings and the statue head study in your latest post. Seems you will progress alot doing more of those life studies.
I have no idea what silverpoint is.
*ViRuS*
February 1st, 2009, 11:59 AM
silverpoint is a way of drawing from the renaissance where you use silver to draw on coated paper. can't erase, and it has a great look when it's done well... =)

small update, gonna post some of the sketchbook drawings soon.
here's stuff from my digital class in school. it's all focused around maya. (which i'm not sure if i like or not...)
first two are paint overs from a 3d layer made in maya. concept art for a temple.
the last one is a really shitty 3d rendering of fruit in a bowl that i was to paint over in photoshop. heh...
*ViRuS*
February 10th, 2009, 06:19 PM
small update again. more digital stuff in photoshop. this was just to kill time. no reff, which is why its quite off, but hey, i think im getting better at this digital stuff.

Hey that landscape turned out pretty damn good for being your first. The latest graphite figure looks cool too although the shoulder closest to us looks slightly outta proportion compared to the other one, might just be me though. O_O

Very nice on the traditional works! I have to second what Imaginary said, that's a stellar painting for your first landscape. It looks like you use the same thumbtacks at your school as I do at mine. :P Anyways, great work, solid updates. The pencil renderings are sweet! More more more!

Ah, awesome. These are some of the most psychologically dark pieces I've seen on here. The mood of most of these is very heavy and bleak. I love it! I see you're into Odd Nerdrum- he's also one of my favorites. I will be keeping an eye on this thread!

*ViRuS*- The davinci fetus sketch is my favorite. The way you overlapped the leaves over the focal image is great. The blue color for the leaves is a nice juxtaposition. I like the intensity in some of your images too. Good things happening here.

Man... the macabre atmosphere to your drawings is brilliant. Hard to find dark images that are also beautiful, most usually fall under the gore-fest category. But you pull it off amazingly well, keep going, would love to see more!
