Hi everyone, Im LadyLioness or Peggy, whichever :P i ll just tell you a little about myself before i post my scratchings :P to start off, im 15 and i recently started taking drawing seriously. It started off when i took 1 figure drawing class at the Art center during this last summer. at first i was a little skeptical about it, not thinking much of it. but after it was over i wanted more. so i decided to move on and learn the human anatomy on my own. so far i know the skelatal structure alright. muscles..well im working on it.

Looks like these are coming along nicely. The eyes seem a bit weird, but you seem to be improving that in the no excuses pic. Only other suggestions I'd make are to try using a darker pencil or scan darker than this and keep up the practice (something I should be doing too)
PeggyChung
December 3rd, 2003, 01:35 AM
hey Big-Dave, thanks for the feedback. oh ya and its light cause im using an HB pencil, i like to use it over a darker pencil cause it doesnt smudge as much :P heres another light drawing :http://volcano.photobucket.com/albums/v11/ladylioness/study3.jpg

hey good stuff buddy. just work on the eyes. Take more time into your sketches and it could turn out better :)
PeggyChung
December 5th, 2003, 01:50 AM
Hey obid619, yea bleh i must spend this weekend studying the eyes and etc. also to those last sketches i posted, it was damn hard to draw ppl while them squirming everywhere. but im working on it, i try to spend my free time or time that im bored in class, to sketch ppl. also i did some crap sketches of ppl at lunch time. i never noticed how much ppl moved around when they are simply just sitting or standing. -.-''
btw anyone have tips on doing quick sketches of ppl in public? i could only get a "skelaton" of them. pretty much the way they were standing or sitting and thats it. thanks in advance.
Edit: just scribbled my hand while watching tv.12/4

Are you taking any drawing classes?
If not, I suggest reading soem anatomy or figure drawing books. If you're on the right track by doing figure drawings, but you really need to draw what you see and not what you think you see. by that, I mean that humans have a tendency to draw too fast and generalize features without actually seeing how they REALLY look. forexample, human eyes, most people draw eyes either by circles or a pointed oval shape, but eyes are much more intricate than that.. you jsut haev to really LOOK at what you're drawing, to make sure that you actually draw it exactly how it is.
Keep practicing, and remember to look more at what you're drawing!

hey dragongx, nope im not taking classes. but ah i have been studyign anatomy. well this just shows how much i suck

Yeah, everyone has to start somewhere! Just keep practicing, and remember waht I said about seeing what you REALLY see and tkaing your time and you should improve alot!

Hey Lioness! Just thought I'd thow in my two cents! I agree with the above statement about drawing what you see. Something I do is take a sketchpad out and go to a Borders or Barnes and Nobles cafe and draw people there. You have endless models there (even if they are wearing clothes, but hey...). It's challenging because the people keep shifting, and moving, and changing. But it's invaluable, I think.
As far as studying on you own, my mother bought me a book when I was around 10 called "The Human Figure" by John Vanderpoel. Even 20+ years ago, she understood where my interests lay, and what the difficulties were. It's still one of the best book on the subject I've ever read. A bit academic, but with very clear, beautiful pencil drawings throughout.

Hey nice works. One thing i think may help. Unless its just your scanner u seem to lack a full scale of colors. Even when u gave urself the three shades to apply to the study .. i still didnt see a dark black. if one of them is and the scanner made it pale then my apologies. But try to get a darker range. I see alot of whitespace and gray shading with only black contour to define the silhouette. Keep up the devotion. Piece - CHudds

December 14th, 2003, 09:54 PM
good improvement! keep up the sketching. i really dig your style. that final with the guy on the chair is really nice. i love the head too. i love that little sketch next to the hand. the one with the figure silouhetted(sp?) against the bg. nice touch. i just have one suggestion and that is to lossen up your lines a bit. instead of going *skitch*skitch*skitch, go sssssskitch, ssssskitch. make long countour lines for the base drawing. get the gesture line and body placement as fast as possible. 10 seconds is pretty good but 30 is fun too. just something i learned from my life drawing classes and thought i'd pass along =)
PeggyChung
December 15th, 2003, 12:12 AM
hey Chudzta, thanks for the reply. yea your right, i havent been daring enough to go darker, plus i think i need to use a 2b more, i started using HB for a while. i ll try to take a stab at it the next time around :D
Hi character, thanks for dropping by :D ack i thought the head of the guy with the chair was horrible -.-'' well his face was haha. on the one with the siouhette (dont know how ti spell it also :P) it was actually originally to sharpen my pencil cause i was too lazy to use sandpaper :P but hey if i could get it to look liek it was there purposely then good :D
btw i have style? *glee*

These are coming along very nicely, I only have one minor crit with regards to your value studies. Something I usually forget and have to remind myself about is that, even in shadows, there will be some reflected light on a surface. Therefore, the darkest shadow will fall a little bit in from the edge, not on the edge. Hope that makes sense, keep up the good work.

You have a very strong start, a lot of your work looks awesome. Just one suggestion, you might want to play around with value a bit more in the value studies, other than that everything looks awesome!

December 18th, 2003, 02:39 PM
I'm glad to see you've been taking my advice! Your drawings are getting noticably better! Keep it up and keep practicing!
DragonGX
December 18th, 2003, 02:43 PM
Oh yeah, if you want to learn to get better values in your drawings I suggest getting an "Ebony" pencil. Its basically an 8B pencil. You can get a full range of values out of it, and it'll help you learn to control the values you put down on the paper. I wish I could scan in a drawing I have that I did with an Ebony, it has very dark darks and very light lights.
Don't be afraid to draw darker, just sketch in the basic drawing first and then darken it with a darker pencil (or like I said, use an 8B and jsut draw very light at first) As long as you make sure you have the right proportions, etc in your drawing, it'll be no problem!

January 2nd, 2004, 09:38 PM
good to see you working at it.
for sps i can tell you-
for lips dont do such a hard outline, the lips blend into the skin and almost are invisible if u look closely.. its the same tone. i struggle with lips mostly myself, they are hard! tricky :)
the best thing that helped me out was to use not just lines, but use your whole side of the pencil instead of the point. it gets fast and better gestures, with easier room to correct.
instead of sketchiness try to use broad strokes that define the shape of your head, then measure. the use of the tip of the pencil is not necessary always!
shading is hard, im struggling with it myself so its good to leave it alone, for now. but study shading in your spare time for sure.
Keep it up!

Self Portrait #7 is great! The best so far IMO.
Try to be that accurate when you do studies! :)
Maybe the right eye is slightly too high?
In cases like that I always move features around digitally :D
But seriously I think it's a good idea to do this from time to time.
(Trying to fix images when you mess up proportions slightly)
Somehow it looks as if the right ear is very high.
But I guess it's not actually the ear that I see there?
Kinda makes the image look as if your face is pointing to the ground.
Especially when I cover up the left half.
PeggyChung
January 3rd, 2004, 05:25 AM
whats up Signature, yep your right, i didnt notice the right ear thing and wow now i could really see it. and yea my face was pointed toward the ground just a little. also i just remembered that for sp#7 i sat in front of a full length mirror instead of my normal 4x5 one lol. thanks again for dropping by (:

I might be wrong but I think you're using blunt pencils most of the time.. Usually I sharpen it regularly.. once every ten, twenty max minutes. They give crisper cleaner lines.. Look at my sketchbook to see what I mean.

You're doing good! I can see some very good improvement! A few of your shapes are still kind of skewed, so jsut remember to really pay attention to what you are drawing (as far as when drawing from life) It's 100x more difficult to draw WELL from your imagination, but if you keep drawing from life, you will get good at drawing from your imagination!
Keep it up and keep improving! :D

Lioness,
Keep at it. You're progressing quite well. Those drawings of inanimate objects are very nicely rendered. Also, I liked those studies of head structure you did recently. One other thing I'd suggest is to do gesture drawings of people at cafes and such. How you do that is to give yourself a goal when drawing quickly, usually less than two minutes per drawing, to draw the figure with as few lines as possible. Another thing to try and catch with those gestures is the movement of the figure. It tends to take a bit to get used to, but it helped my drawings incredibly to get that energy on the page before I started shading.
Good luck and have fun.
Sincerely,
Chris

hey, very nice work! your improving constantly! That last sp (# 23) is very nice, glad to see some really nice, those studies help. I would suggest that you use a darker pencil, i use a 2B for lines and a 5B for shading and works great for me because i can really get much more depth from the drawing. great work, keep it up!

good work lioness! ditto to bhuddistmonk, darker pencils are a lot better for shading and giving your skeyches depth. i normally use a graphite stick/pencil of about 4B,
good work though, keep it coming!:)

Hey ladylioness! Just wanted to drop by and compliment you on this thread. All artists need the kind of perseverence youre showing here. =)
I can already see improvement from the beginning to the end of the sketchbook and from looking at the way you are studying anatomy and focusing on getting things right, it looks like yorue on the right track.
One thing i have a suggestion about if your line and shading. It seems to me like youre style is leaning more towards line, in which case you should try and keep your lines crisp. Try and keep that pencil sharp, of even try using mechanical pencil. I saw that youre already practising your hatching technique, which is fantastic. Once you get the hang of it you can fly through doing simple shading, without getting your drawings looking muddy.
keep up the good work!

i had a lot of fun with this one, intentionaly it was supposed ot be a whatever portrait and i gave up in the middle pic so i started one on the left then on the right. they are all out of proportion and has many flaws but the watercolours made it a lot of fun.

Hey Lady, your progress is encouraging. I have a suggestion: look at the last drawing of the controller, see how you just basically wrote "SONY" on it, it doesnt look right, looks like you just...wrote it on there. An excellent way to practice really drawing the actual shapes and contours you see (instead of just drawing your brain's symbol for the idea) is to try to draw letters without really focusing on them being letters, just think of them as abstract shapes and draw those, they'll end up looking way more accurate and natural. Just a little tip that you might find some value in...keep pushing!!

i agree that you've grown a lot since you started the sketchbook. do you draw more than you post? and i agree about the sony lettering. i think you already know what we're talking about though and just got lazy. keep it up!
