well, first of all, i been looking around and i havent seen a topic like this, so,if im wrong, my apologies

well, what i want to ask is this:

i been doing "realistic" art ( even if i suck hard at it ) for a while, and im fully aware that i have a lot to learn from it, but, sometimes i wonder, when i will know when i'll be ready to make "the jump" from copying a photography and make the model to look exactly like it looks in the picture in the paper, from making my own piece of art that is floating in my head using said model only as a reference?

im aware that references in fantasy art are key to make them good looking, but you dont end up making an exact copy of the model in your piece sometimes

i have seen in here people who keeps both, fantasy and fine art in their sketchbooks, so i know working well with realistic art has to be the key for me to do someday decent fantasy art someday

i mean, with this realistic art i been able to see details like shadows, proportions, etc etc that if i ever do something in "fantasy" i will be able to keep it in mind to make the drawing to look proper, but i wonder if there is really a point where, i could be "Overdoing it" instead of attempting to create "fantasy art"

in short words, my question is, how will i know when do i have to make the jump from realistic art to fantasy art?

has someone in here do what im trying to do that could share his or her experience? jumping from fine art to fantasy art?

thanks for your time reading this!

You don't "make the jump." You work on both at the same time. If you wait until you are "ready," you may never be.

work on the basics and keep the vital imagination alive as well. Theres no jump, people who study shit too long and then try to some else shit, fall flat on their face manyatimes, so keep that creativity burning my man.

I think you might never succesfully jump to fantasy art with that method. You need to start drawing from imagination so you can see what type of mistakes are repeated. This way you know what to improve to be more self-reliant. Otherwise you're just wandering in the dark. What only gets better is copying from photo.

I've been doing loadsa foundational studies (Like that one in my avater.), but now I started drawing stuff out of my head, I wish I did it earlier. Cause I find it so fun to do.

You can look at the Daily sketch group thread for ideas, draw, reasearch, thumbnail, do bigger piece, then post.

you don't have to make a jump from fine art to fantasy at all...

what are you talking about?
Do you mean doing fantasy illustrations?
Because a Fantasy Art can be a Fine Art; they don't belong under the same method of classification.
