I do wonder, does anyone here use it WITHOUT a tablet to accompany it? Most places I go, the best MS Paint picture I can find is a red stickman with his arms sticking out of his stomach and a dot between his legs.

Frankly, a tablet ain't gonna make MS Paint that much better. Unless you're shooting for Pixel Art, I wouldn't use MS Paint for anything (and even if you were pixeling... there are better options).

Photoshop, Painter, Artrage... muuuuch better options.

If you're looking at MS Paint for doing large, complicated pictures, you're probably looking at the wrong program. Paint is really limited in its features and if used for any sort of art, it's usually pixel art. Even then it is more of a beginner's program because things like the lack of hot keys, layers, and colour-fixing options make it slower and more tedious to work with than programs such as Photoshop, GraphicsGale, or ProMotion (which are the more common programs that professional pixel artists use). It gets the job done eventually, but it takes a while. I used to use MS Paint for my pixel art (All of the works in the portfolio in my signature were done with it) but I finally switched over to Photoshop a while ago. Much faster, easier, and more capable in general.

Basically, whatever sort of art you're doing, there's a program better than Paint for it. And if you look in the right places, many of them are free. Try checking out GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) or some similar program if you don't want to (or can't) shell out the money for something like Photoshop.

I don't really use it, except for minor color edits when I'm too lazy to load Photoshop... IMO having a tablet doesn't really have any relation to how good you'll be with MSPaint

Churist is a genius. Wonder what happened to him...

Even though MS Paint is a very inefficient program, I've seen some pretty cool stuff done with it. No, they weren't super realistically rendered but they were cool. It's the artist, not the tools...

This is what I want to do. (Warning, pagerape.) (http://d.imagehost.org/0509/Abigor.png) He did not use a tablet, or anything other than Paint, really. I want to learn the skills he used to make that. (Also, the artist's general name is MiddleFingerRings.)

I mean, considering my literal twelve-year old inability to comprehend something as complex as Flash or GIMP, I want to at least get my feet planted on the ground.

I love using paint for quick sketches and some drawings, and I think you can get some super cool stuff from it. don't get me wrong, it's an awful program. awful (and if you're wanting to do nice painterly stuff, get yerself a copy of photoshop, painter or download gimp)

I still er.. love it a bit more than I should though, in all its primitive, pixellated, nolayers, only 8x zoom glory.

oh paint, don't ever change baybeee~

So you want to do pixel art. While I hate to be that guy who advertises other forums, the best one out there for all things pixel arts is Pixelation. (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php)

I used to be pretty active there back in the day, and from everything I can tell they're still doing pretty well. I'll bet that they have plenty of information to offer you in terms of pixel art and what software to use.

As far as a tablet is concerned with pixel art... it's really not necessary. I did it for years without a tablet just fine. It really comes down to preference and what you're comfortable using.

Except what he posted isn't pixel art. He seems to want to do line art with cel shading.

Actually that is pixel art. The artist (at least I'm assuming they're the same person) used to post on Pixelation back in the day. It's larger scale than usual pixel art, but it most definitely is. It looks like one of his unfinished pieces, though.

Hell yes to that. Pixelation is a great forum.

Here's probably the most impressive (arguably non-pixel art) thing I've ever seen done in MS Paint without a tablet (even if it was done directly from a reference picture):

Proves that you can do a lot with the little program, but it will take LOTS more work than doing it any other way. The finished image is here. (http://www.pixelgod.net/img/gallery/impreza.jpg)
