ROUND #140 :: Bettie Page Tribute

DESCRIPTION

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bettie_Page
http://www.bettiepage.com/obit/index.html

Bettie Page passed away last week on Dec. 11. For those of you who did not know her, she was a beautiful woman and a pinup model in the 40's and 50's, inspiring much of the art from that time period.

This round is meant as a tribute, and thus has some different rules from other Chow rounds.

1) This is not strictly speaking a 'character design' round. You will be drawing Bettie. Instead, we are going to work with the format that you are designing the character that Bettie will be *playing* in the image. You may use themes/characters that she was well known for (ie. Bondage Vixen, Jungle Queen, Girl Next Door), OR you may invent entirely new characters that you believe stay true to Bettie's spirit. (Feisty sci-fi, anyone?)

2) You are asked to please do this in the style of a pin up. We would like to see the layout and composition of the images reflect the time period and the spirit.

3) You are asked to remain respectful in the thread - this is dedicated to her memory. That being said, please have fun. :)

Thank you.

Excellent! Looking forward to seeing what people do!

Edit: First sketches. Initially I thought of doing Bettie as another character, like Lara Croft or Wonder Woman, but then I thought as an angel maybe, breaking loose of her 'bondage'...!

Edit 2: I put the face from the Lara Bettie onto Wonder Woman bettie and like this one better. Think I might go with it, although I still like the idea of an Angel Bettie. Hmmmm...

Edit 3: Slight tidy up on the Wonder Bettie one, although the legs a bit funny. Still don't know whether to go with this one though. Bleh...

Edit 4: Still not happy, but think I'll do Miss Muffet! By the way, I discovered after a lifetime of not knowing what a bloody 'tuffet' was, is that it is a small footstool-like piece of furniture or a little grassy hillock. There ya go! :)

I'm so in! Bettie was so insanely awesome, broke quite some taboos and was so very playful. Even now, if you check her pics to girls these days going nekkid, she still captures you with style, class, innocently toying around, still being sexy.

Since the pictures on Bettiepage.com, her homepage, are a bit small, here's another site with slightly bigger pictures:http://www.vampress.net/bettie/photos.html.

I found some more ref sites, of course, Bettie has nudity..

Jessi & Posh: I think you both should be excluded from drawing females forever. ;) :p All jokes aside, you'll both probably excel at this one, so I'm very anxious to see what you'll come up with. :)

I will be trying to do this one as well, but I've got to next to no time coming weekend, so I'll have to finish it before friday.

I had no idea she passed away. I remember hearing that she was very camera shy in the last few years and that she kept herself more of an enigma.

Though this was just conversation and not fact.

Posh: I actually like the Lara Croft one best... I think just for her expression, though. God knows I love angels, but she looks so awesomely playful in the croft image. :P

Damnit Posh, I get back from spending my lunch break sketching ideas trying to come up with something. Only to find that you've already come up with 3 of the same ideas I have had, and of coarse all of your's look better than anything I've come up with. :P

Ah well... the attitude of the Lara-Bettie is awesome but I really like the idea of portraying her as an angel. The symbolisim is nice and the tie in with her nick-name "The Dark Angel" works nicely as well. They all look awesome so far. :)

who is glen angus?

In simplest terms because I unfortunately did not get a chance to become familiar with him: Glen Angus was a well respected artist here on CA who had died last year. One of the themes he was best known for were his military planes, many with the classic pin-ups on them. Hopefully someone can better explain who Glen was than I.

The tribute thread is here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=102426

A quick sketch of Betty as Cleopatra. More than likely to change, want to art nouveau her up some. I'm also going to do a Betty as Catwoman and perhaps a fairytale character like Sleeping Beauty :)

Something looks akward about her head. Is it too small, or just position wrong? Hmm :/

Tempting, but not sure if I'll join in. I prefer the pinup paintings of people like Gil Elvgren Pinup Gallery (http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5316841) and there are a few artists and links at wiki as well Clickety (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pinup_artists).

I'm too raunchy and have to tone down... the first thing on my mind, ended up in this face.

Daray - the back of her head slopes back too quickly, and think about where the hand is going through the hair in relation to the back of the skull. That's what I see anyway! :) Lovely sketch though!

Thank's for commenting on my doodles guys. I think I'm going to work up the idea of Bettie as an angel a bit more... or maybe not! ;)

Oh yeah, I forgot to note. Cookie asked me about this yesterday, so:

As this is a tribute thread, the one-image-per-person rule is lifted.

I haven't decided yet if we're going to have a poll this week or not, but I'll keep you guys updated. I think, really, we should just try to make as much awesome art as we can.

DauDau: I love Gil Elvgren, and I don't think his kind of work would be at all out of place for this kind of thread. Pretty sure he would have made some pretty hot Bettie pictures if he was still with us.

Daestwen: You know, when I saw this thread this morning I thought: Betty who?... Until I saw her picture, and then it all made sense. :) If you don't do a poll, then at least some sort of gallery thing. This is gonna spawn some really cool images methinks.

I'm going for the Bondgirl Betty. Gunslingin' beachbabe femma fatale beckoning you.

Hey Pixeltuner:

Watch her waist/belly. Your Bond Bettie is a li'l pregnant, got a bit of a beerbelly. Bettie had a very slim waist. Here's a pic where her tummy is kinda like in your pic:click. (http://www.vampress.net/bettie/swim/bpbath121.jpg) and click (http://www.vampress.net/bettie/lingerie/bpling35.jpg).

Looking good so far guys.
The first image was spawned from a joke from my nursing class, couldn't resist putting Bettie Page in the role. That out of the way I did a couple more. None of mine looks like Bettie right now. I'm going to keep making some more sketches and try to get at least a passing resemblence. :)

great subject. When I had read that she had passed away, I thought I needed to do an illustration. I also didn't know that Glen Angus had died last year, that's a great loss to the art community. His Victory Gals series was paramount in his development, but I think it could be safely suggested that Vargas and other pin-up artists of Page's day inspired his work...

Here's is my idea........it's preety rough right now.......I'm still trying to look for a nice concept before I worry about making it look like Betty.....

The firt idea that came was the one in wich she is catching the ribbon......and (like in the traditionals pin up) she perceve that her underwear is appearing.......making that shock face..........
The other one came after............ well I like the idea of the first one.....but I prefer the second one.....I don't know why..............I think I need to sleep.....

Let me know what you guys think ..........really need some critics.....

MJ Alcazar: really nice start........my favourite is the winter princess.........it's creative and has a nice composition...

Hybrid_75: it's awesome already......I'm looking forward to see the progress...

And now....I'm going to sleep....

Posh - love the wips, and I have to agree with Dae that Lara Croft has the most sass for sure. Though, I would love to see what could come of the Wonder Woman train of thinking...

mayhemunited - I have to agree that so far I see Glen Angus' victory gals and not so much Bettie. She's an amazing character, make her the star of your image.

Daray - interesting spin with cleopatra, though maybe keep the shorter bangs so she is instantly recognizable? Also, the pose seems a little stiff for a pinup and some anatomy things are a little off - maybe something sassier more like this: http://www.kindgirls.com/gal0004/gabi_78453/gabi_78453_15.jpg (NSFW) Interested to see where you take this.

DauDau - you should give it a go, it's an awesome topic to hop in on... be sure to plan out the whole piece tho - 3/4 rule needs to be followed, and it's best to get overall proportions down, then refine more. Keep going!

Pixeltuner - Cookie is right about her midsection - the ideal in Bettie's time was a very nipped in waist, she she often looks like she is even holding her breath in photos. The hourglass is what makes it... :^^: Great start.

More later... wips for now:

since its that time of the year...I thought a nice Christmas card from Betty would be nice. My first sketch...i need to enlarge the head, sort the face out and adjust some other bits...but you get the idea.
Update 1: started colouring...I had to make the back arm smaller...and now I can do the underarm and shoulder properly and lengthen slightly, the front arm.

Final Edit:

I just decided, that this is finished now. I don't know yet, if I will submit it for poll ( will there be a poll this time ?)...we'll see.
Charcoal on paper, the paper is tinted with watercolour.
Pose referenced from mirror and finished from imagination. Her face is done largely from imagination. I looked at several photos to get her smile right. I'm not sure, if she looks like Bettie, but I stopped working on it, when I liked her expression.

For Bettie:

544146

Edit 3:

I worked only a tiny bit more on this, but I managed to take a slightly better picture. The paper is tinted with watercolour, that's why it curls up so much. Still a lot of work to do ( the hands, her foot ...)

543412

Edit 2:

First steps of the charcoal drawing. I used some photos as reference to make her face look more like Bettie's ...not sure about the likeness, but at least she's prettier now. :) Sorry, bad photograph.
542865

Edit:

Here's the first real sketch. It's still kind of wonky and I don't like the face (it's :P )...but I want to do this in charcoal anyway, which means I have to start again from scratch and hopefully I can can fix the 'wonkyness' then.

Ref for the pose from mirror with a LOT of imagination.

DauDau: First, calm down. :P Second, it's not too xxx. You should take a look back at some of our other Chow rounds - specifically, perhaps, 'Elizabeth Bathory' and 'Red Sonya' in particular, and you might note that nudity is totally legal in chow. This *is* bettie page we're talking about - she had some pretty raunchy photos! Basically, for this chow, anything goes, as long as we're not getting into the sexual acts and such (since she never did photos that far - bondage was as far as she went). So far, your image isn't even xxx enough to force photobucket to take it down, so you're fine. :P

Don't worry *too* much. Because this is a tribute round, there might not be a poll... Instead there will probably be a finished works gallery of some sort, here on CA. So, if entries trickle in late, I'm not so worried. :)

Also, don't forget the chow revisit and revision thread! You can always post something there if you decide to come back to this topic much later.

Time to get over my fear of drawing human figures. It's surprisingly hard to do a pin-up pose. I'll need to look up more anatomy references... anatomy/pose crits please :|

DauDau
December 16th, 2008, 12:24 PM
Nightblue, she's really cute. The jacket obstructs the view a bit, but I think there's a small dislocation in the neck/shoulder area. I think the neck became a tiny bit too wide, and you put a beautiful arm and shoulder on the neck that is too wide... so the shoulder's too far to the right. I think. That's how it looks to me. Other than that, I think it's great.

Keep in mind that Bettie had a sense of humor and an innocence about her that didn't exist with any other real model at that time. This was what allowed her to push the boundaries as much as she did.

Let her have fun when you draw her and she'll be happy as a clam, no matter what she's doing or wearing/not wearing.

There things to fix yet.....like for example: her feet........I couldn't get it right.....the position is to complicated.......spent most of the time trying to fix it.....wothless.....

I'm guessing bangs are like a fringe? Well it wasn't til I looked back it looked too long! Although I've doodled a bit at work and hopefully should look better in the little sketches I have.

Cheers for the link, it doesn't work, but found my way about the site. Now to get refining I thinks. Or doodle my heart out!

jeez people, you keep crankin' em out. Bettie would be proud :)
Here's an update again.. Added some colour, tried another 'bikini', and fixed her tummy again. Made it a bit more stylised to grasp the pose and anatomy better.

Very cool! These are looking great, she died on the 11th and go to www.bettiepage.com to read tons of tribute's, this is her real site and they did not hold back at all!! Olivia may have a tribute as well they were working on it.

I've started on mine, even though I'm not sure I'll manage to get it done... :bashful:

I have a question though. I'm using photo references heavily to try to get her body right (she has a very specific body) as well as the face (HAS to have that Bettie look! :D ) - but how do I do that copyright wise? I'm leaning heavily on nudes for the body - one in particular for the light - but putting on a costume, for the face I'm using a few other photos.

Since this time it's a tribute instead of a character creation per se, I guess everybody is leaning on photo reference at least to a degree. Should I still put myself as a the copyright owner? Worst part is that these are pics I've gathered earlier, I have no idea who the photographers might be or where the photos has been published originally. But I'm not copying any of the photos down to detail either.... I'm using several and using my own things for the setting.

Is it enough to just state "used lot of photo reference"? It's not like I could go and take photos of her myself this time. :bashful:

December 16th, 2008, 10:22 PM
Sork: As long as you're not doing paint-overs, or directly copying, you should be okay. Stating that you used a lot of reference is probably a good idea, but as you said, this *is* a tribute thread - you're going to see a lot of highly derivative work, here! But as for uploading your work and wips to the site, it still falls under your copyright (unless, as i stated, it's a paintover, but that's not what you're doing, so... :P )

I've been a lurker for a long while here, I think I've posted a few times. I'm a huge fan of Bettie Page and, even if it doesn't get finished, this project is gonna be great fun. Here's an early start I got today, since school was canceled on account of copious amounts of snow!!!! :^^:

Sorknes
December 17th, 2008, 12:16 AM
Thanks for the answer, Daestwen. :)

Ok, here goes then. Heavily photoreferenced!!!

I want it to look as much as Bettie as I can , so I have four photos I've been leaning heavily on. Since it's a tribute, I'm not going anywhere over the top on character creation, I just really wanted to draw her like she was. :) The idea is that her outfit will be winter-ish/Christmas-ish in the end, since it's that time of the year anyway. There will probably be a black bunny in there as well, as a kind of pointer to her "innocent even when bad" thing she had going on. :)

I think I might've gone overboard on the hips when trying to do the hourglass thingy, she looks a bit fatter than normally... Lil trouble with defining her tummy as well. :bashful: And I think I have to do something with her chin/mouth....

PoshSpice - Love the Miss Muffet idea, really cute

JessiBean - You've done this before haven't you?

Wiggers - Hope you can finish, love the 50's sci-fi look

Anarky - Excellent likeness, you really nailed her face. Nice concept too.

Nightblue - No idea why you have a fear of figure drawing, it looks great. She could stand to be a little curvier, but it looks really good!

DanielaBlanco - The pencil rendering is excellent, but you jumped into finishing the piece too early I think. Just concentrate on a basic skeleton/ stick figure first to make sure the pose is correct.

Killart - Damn, that looks close to finished to me, very nice. A bit modest for Ms Page though.

Sorknes - Beautiful rendering, the body looks great! The face, not so much. The eyes don't line up and the mouth is out of whack. It's kinda cubist almost. Other than that, it's golden!

I started with some sketches so I could get the likeness down and play around with that style of pin-up painting. No idea what I'll do for the final piece, but I'm totally excited about this CHOW. Probably cause it's my first and cause it's Betty Page. Sweet!
Oh yeah, I'm doing this in Painter, first time using it. Love it!

Thanks IanLlanas, I was tired when I stopped, and the face was some of the last I did, I looked at it again now and was like "oh goodness, what happened to her face" as well. lol! :bashful: I used so much time staring at her body to get it right that the face ended up somewhat playing second violin... Will try to fix later today. :D

capnpyro: great sketch! I think her left foot might be twisting a bit too much. The angle of the foot is generally the same with the knee when relaxed.

tommoy: nice pin-up feel in your sketches. I like the left one especially.

IanLlanas: Thanks for the comments! Good start on your sketches. If you are going for the classic pinup look, you may want to find some pinup references online.

JessiBean: I love the way you paint the skin, and your grasp on the female form makes me pretty jealous :) Can't wait to see where you take the sketches.

Byno: good start! look for anatomical references if you want an accurate representation of human form.

kelly: her energy is great! This is right down your alley :) Can't wait to see where you go with it!

sorknes: Looking great! The bunny is a nice touch. Her eyes look a bit off.

killart: wow, I love it! Your way of applying brushstrokes is delicious and your colors are really nice. Awesome work!

Want to comment on everybody's wip but I'm running out of time. I'll try to do more later :)

this is a cropped WIP of what i got so far (the rest is a jumbled mess of blocked-in shapes i havent cleaned up yet), trying to do it manga style for shits and giggles (a style that's new to me) i know i kinda failed with the look with this kind of rendering >.> i dont have much time to draw between rushing around during hols, but i cant resist this chow :D crits welcome, i didnt ref the anatomy so it might be really off.

btw what color are bettie's eyes?

Deadred, she's very pretty. If something feels wrong, then I'm pretty sure it's the eyes. Manga eyes aren't natural. Especially the "young girl" eyes. Baby eyes are HUGE, young girl eyes are BIG and adult woman eyes are sortof normal. Also the elongated iris, the white dot in the eye. I've tried for quite a while to learn the manga style, and still find it tough. lol.

Also baby girl heads are HUGE and young girl heads (skull section) is BIG and adult women's are sortof normal.

I tried to find a link but they all s*ck... Better to find a favorite comic/manga.

One is here: http://www.onemanga.com/xxxHolic/148/01/
Another is good for extreme girly eyes:

Nightblue - Thanks! I like your colors and painting style, reminds me of Gil Elvgren

Deadred - Her eyes were grayish bluish. The anatomy looks pretty good for not using reference. Nice work, Manga painted in a realistic way is a little disconcerting to me though. Not anything against your work, I really like it, but she just looks to young. I feel like I'm going to get thrown in jail for looking at her. ;)

Omgoodness.... these all look beautiful right now!

I also see alot of Xmas ones..... darn. I thought I was going to be original. >.<

Danielblaco: Your feet are actually a bit small compared to the rest of her, and that might be part of why theyre off. The hands seem a bit small too. Also (back to the feet) remember when we look at the leg from the side view, feet often arent fully visible. Youll get a half or 3/4 view of them typically. Look at your feet in the mirror in that sort of pose, and notice how the toes arent fully visible and how the pad and heel round a bit more than youve depicted. Thatll help out your feet plenty. Id suggest the same for the hands.

Pixeltuner: Her stomach needs to angle in just a little bit more. If you noticed, her boby curve is fairly extreme, almost a corseted appearance. Even at the angle that her hips swing out, there would be a bit of a concave slope to her tummy. Other than that, really loving the concept!

Srokness: Gorgeous render! Just careful on the face. Youve made her seem a bit harsh with the wink. Try to soften the edges of the shaddow, and lift the right eye a bit there. Also lift the mouth up a bit off her chin closer to the nose a little. You can also probably extend the smile a bit farther up, since shes uber happy winkey smiley when she does that sort of facial expression.

Shockwave: Careful with her waistline a bit. She really did have a very hourglass figure, so maybe nip it in just a bit?

Deadred: Very cute, but not too manga-ish. Lol. Thats an easy fix tho. Basically all youd need to tweak are the eyes. The reason manga is such a recognizable thing is because the eyes are so enlarged. Basically all youd need to do is enlarge the eyes more. Also forget the natural almond slope that eyes do follow, instead opting for more of a cresent shape. Shading should be fairly minimal, with the wet look increased in them.

Yay it feels good to have time to breathe again. Woot for vacation!

Ill post my update later once I get off work.

k i l l a r t: yours is great .......it has this nice old feeling in the colors and in the way you use the brushs......

Sorknes: I really like yours.......nice lights and pose......but there is something on her face that bothers me........Maybe if put her chin a little back...and also change a little her jaw draw.....

JessiBean: love these versions of Bettie.......your style is really great....

IanLlanas: the one from the left is the best for me......she seems to me like a comics style of Bettie.....and thanks for the comments... I know should have concentraded on the basic forms first........but I overwhelm myself......:}

capnpyro: awesome concept..................looking forward to see the progrees of it.....

Nightblue: really nice mood........it remembers me of that old Christmas card...........cute....!!!

clochette - i love that!
pixeltuner - way too much white or near white in the skin tones. i would throw a skin colored multiply layer over the whole thing and then paint the mids and highlights back over with a nice skin tone. not white!

If you guys see more that's totally whack (especially the face), please go ahead and tell me. :bashful: The colours are just for testing, they're on separate layers, so everything is still fixable in BW.

MJ_Alcazar: wow, touch pads? You are badass :o I like the first one and the angle. Get yourself a mouse at least!

Kelly: the figure is really well-rendered, and I want to see it more rather than the plane! I'm thinking you can get away with just having a small part of the plane in the image, maybe even just the metal/pivot textures in the background. Looking great.

kelly x - thanks, and I agree with Nightblue. I want to see more of her! Good work on her face.

Nightblue - reminds me of an old christmas card, i like it! And, couldn't find a mouse. But I did put on gloves, that'll save my fingers at least. :)

Felicia - I'm liking the Repunzel.

Slash - looking great so far. Watch her right hand, she only has three fingers! but, it looks like you haven't got there yet, so you probably already know. :)

shannanigans - On the feet, think of the toes as sloping out more. She's going to be on the ball of her feet, right behind the toes, so the toes should be more flat against the floor. Also, the bones in your ankle are more readily seen on the outside, but the inside isn't seen as much. At least, i think that's what's bothering me. Looking good so far though, i like your idea. :)

JessiBean - really beautiful ideas. Can't wait to see them finished.

Poshspice - I'm really liking them all actually. The Muffet one looks pretty good, but I liked the new face on Wonder Woman. And the idea behind the angel was awesome. I almost did the same thing with mine, "breaking free of the bondage of life" because it's a really great idea. Hope to see you finish!!! :) Sry, wasn't much help in the choosing department.

petitemistress - can't wait to see the minnie mouse bettie. Really good idea!

Tommoy - love her expression! And the colors are awesome too.

Sorknes - I think the problem you're running into on the face is your trying to go two different directions at the same time. I think your wanting her head tilted, and the top half is. The, the bottom of her face is not tilted. I may be wrong. But, maybe play around with the angle of her head?

Adam Schumpert - love your Bettie, she looks so carefree. Can't wait to see her finished. (as a side note, I really loved the little pug chasing and running from Jiao - Long, I spent several hours last night putting up comments three times. None of them took. :( But, anyway. I had a pretty sad week last week, and that just made me smile. Thanks for that)

Timmy the Turtle - really loving the picture. It's beautiful. Watch her right arm, it looks like it's all one thing right now and i think it needs just a little bit of shadow to show it's the forearm and upper arm. I don't know the character she is right now, but I can't help but want a little more expression to her face. Bettie always looked so playful/sexy in her pics. If that's an expression that the character has though, then it's great!

to keep the dude or not.... any Idea's? also any Ideas on what would make her a little more modest? odd thing to ask I know but I am stuck on what to do about her top...and pasties aren't really hmmm, modest. I just don't want anything to detract from her. oh well. I have been at this picture for over 8 hrs...I am slow...not in that way, well...?....anyway I take a loooooong time to do things. so any critique is welcome.

to keep the dude or not.... any Idea's?

Right now when I look at your picture I'm drawn to his face first. Maybe making him into a full-on Santa would help. Then his face would be obscured a bit with the beard and mustache... know what I mean?

EDIT: I just thought of something that might be better... maybe he should be looking at Bettie rather than the viewer. Though I still think him with a Santa beard would be hilarious! ;)

Nightblue, I think your Bettie looks great. Very Elvgren, really good anatomy and I really like her happy expression. The tie and firehydrant are nice choices - *g*.

Capnpyro, her face is great. It's a really fun expression and a cute idea all round.

I'm enjoying this, and learning, and love watching everyone's work. The reason I'm not critting or commenting more, is that I am a newb and still struggling with stuff, as well.

The pink Bettie/Betty that I did first, needs something extra but I had to let it rest a bit. So I spent yesterday on two other ideas. One of them is such a mess, I can't show her here. Not yet. The other, is this one. It's too dark and her expression is all wrong. I'm not sure what to do with her. The kitchen setting is so dark.

Anyway. Here is the work in progress.

shannanigans - On the feet, think of the toes as sloping out more. She's going to be on the ball of her feet, right behind the toes, so the toes should be more flat against the floor. Also, the bones in your ankle are more readily seen on the outside, but the inside isn't seen as much. At least, i think that's what's bothering me. Looking good so far though, i like your idea. :)

Thanks for the advice MJ! You are right about the ankle bone... I'm afraid I almost fell victim to the "2 left Feet" Syndrome, or in this case right ankles. I do it all time. LOL!

As for the toes, I fixed 'em up. I knew they weren't right, but I had tweaked them so many times I just couldn't figure it out. Thanks for the push in the right direction.

So here is my latest... the background is good to go. Now I just gotta give her a little shading, etc. and this baby is done! :D

I think that because it is a tribute, to do Bettie justice and get the most final pieces, an extension would be a great idea.

Maybe the next challenge can be put up on schedule so that the people that want to move to a new subject can while anyone finishing up their Bettie pieces have the time to complete their tribute pieces.

I think we should do another topic next week. These might get overworked if it goes too long.
But, is it possible to let this one go another week so people have enough time to put the finishing touches on, and start another topic? We could simply do the voting for both at the end of next week. Just an idea~

All the edges and stuff will have to be added tomorrow, as well as the face. I put the background in.

I have to say I liked the solid background with the music notes best, I thought it was really cute and not overdone. Your previous WIP really had a vintage pinup feel to it... but with the modern touch of the I-Pod. I think this background may distract a little.

If you don't want solid white maybe a pale yellow, a nice compliment to her skin color and cute pink undies (that I hope are coming back! ;) ) with some highs and lows instead of a heavily patterned background.

Of course this is just my 2 cents and others may disagree. I am sure you worked hard on the background so I don't mean to offend in any way... but thought I should share my thoughts with you.

I had a look for Bettie Page on You Tube. Some great stuff there! :) Really quite sweet a lot of it. The last two are interviews with her, although she hides her face. I found it a bit sad that she hated getting old and didn't want people to see her, but remember her as she was. And looking at the huge industry around her image, I really hope she got something out of it. There's a ton of stuff making money out of her. The second one has some great colour close-ups of her making all sorts of wonderful expressions.

This is a little late in the game to be mentioning this, but as it has been causing me a little bit of trouble, I thought I should add this to the guidelines. Please note it is effective as of this round! Not providing copyright info won't get you banned from the poll, but it WILL save me a lot of work, so please do so! Thanks!

PLEASE NOTE THE NEW FOLLOWING GUIDELINE:

Please include accurate copyright information when submitting your entry.
What this means: It means that we'll need you to tell us how you are filling out the copyright form when you upload to the CA attachment manager. This means name (usually if we're not sure, we put it under the username, but you may specify another), image catagory, sub catagory, genre and media.
Why: Because of the new attachment system, we need accurate copyright information in case your image is posted anywhere else with regards to chow. (For example, the winner's thread.) We can usually guess, but it is much easier (and accurate) if you simply provide the information along with your final burning entry, and we will be requesting this from now on.

For this reason and in case I decide I hate something and want all traces of it removed off the internet I only host images on my own web server, does this copyright info apply to those of us that do this? Thanks in advance :)

daestwen, does this mean we need to post the copyright info apart from filling in the Attachment Manager form? If so, should we post it in both this, the "pre-pro" thread, and final burning? Thanks.

It's already a rule in Chow that you need to use the attachment editor in the final burning thread. (It's not one that I check, but really I should.) This is because a lot of the earlier polls have tons of images missing - including images that won! (Which leads me to my second point - all winning images are put in the winning thread, and we only use the attachment editor these days because we've lost so many of the original winners this way.)

If it turns out later that you REALLY want to take your entries down (which would make me really sad), then I would ask that you still attach them, but then contact me and I will remove them from the polls / winning thread. Hope you understand!

masque: Yes. You don't need to post it in the wip thread, but please write it underneath your image in the final burning thread. Unfortunately I can't just check what you wrote for your image, or I wouldn't have to ask you guys to supply it. :)

Ohhhh, okay. I always make things harder than they really need to be. I've wondered what name I was supposed to put down on that. I've been using my real name. But, I shall use my username in the future.

Nono, you SHOULD use your real name, probably. If you don't want to post it in the final burning thread, then use your username.

I wasn't sure either, so I added a copyright text on the image(s) and as text. With real name. Hope it's okay.

Sniff.... :( My question about the Copyright info got passed over, and I'm not even wearing my invisibility cloak. LOL! ;)

I just went and re-uploaded my entry and categorized it like the other have... but I still would like an answer to my question for future postings if possible:

Is there a thread or information anywhere on this site with descriptions of the Categories?

I find some a bit confusing. I searched but found nothing specific.... Thanks!

Done, and done.

If there's a copyright format you'd prefer us to use if you want to edit your first post in the burning thread I'll follow your formatting, otherwise I took my best guess, thanks.

I noticed a few of the images in the Final Burning Thread were not named correctly. I'd hate to see anyone cut because of the naming format. It's in the directions towards the bottom. You have to put Chow###_Name.jpg. (ex. mine would be Chow140_MJAlcazar.jpg)

Final! I ran out of time. I spent way too long on her face, and her arms and legs suffered for it.

Posh: Thanks! You can never have too much Dr. McCoy ;D

I'd love to comment on all, but I work mids and it's sleepy time! There's a lot of good stuff going on, so you can bet I'll comment in the final thread. Good luck all!

Ah, sorry, I knew I missed somebody. a_a Ahm, the answer is, there really isn't. not yet, anyway. As of right now, with my own work, I just kind of make my best guess... I have a tendency to use the 'other' catagory a lot. :P

ilaekae: Won't actually have time to do the poll until monday morning, so you've got a few hours lee way.

LOL! Yeah me too.... since I refuse to put everything I do in the same category with Anime simply because all my art has black outlines. Hehehe.... :D

Here's my second, too late too finish it but I wouldn't mind some feed back. It's a little bit angel (dark angel), and a little bit of a plane because of those plane pin-ups... Oh and a whole bunch of sc-fi.

Loving the work. Hopefully i'll get to that standard one day.

Wonderful stuff rolling in guys! :D

Managed to get it somewhat finished and posted in the final burning.... Someone please send me a PM or post here if I screwed up the copyright stuff? Pwetty please? I wrote that I used photoref, myself as copyright holder, then conceptart, character, other and photoshop, since I kinda felt that "historical" has more of an Elizabethanian ring over it.... And there is no "portrait" option, is there? Or am I blind? *lol*

GL everybody! :D

Alesoun, good likeness to her face, which is tough to get, so that's good. I really like the curvaceous figure, especially hips and legs, that look good and work well.

Sorknes, I think there are a lot of us, that are hoping we did it right.

I also want to wish everyone good luck.

Was trying to capture the feel of the tacky cartoonish drawings of the 1950's girlie magazines...

Sniff sniff....no body answered my questions either shannanigan....that's we get for being noobs. Anyway wondering if the composition of my picture is ok. I really like the expressions I think however I did a crap job on betties flesh. her flesh looks a little too cartoony while the rest of the picture looks more realistic. Oh Shannanigan does his face look better now with the beard? I really like your bedrock bettie very creative.

Sapztastic, I think yours looks really great, the amount of detail you were able to get with two complete figures and the lively attitudes for both Bettie and Santa are amazing, I think you have a handle on her anatomy (her legs are skinny, although you did beef them up a bunch) I think people did not respond because this is not the crit section??? I don't really know? I'm new here too. But, I think for having a week to do all you did you rocked it in so many ways.
Good job to all of the Bettie's and very creative, also good messages.
keep them coming in, Dash has extended this, keep submitting!!

spaztastic You don't have a light source, which is why the skin and clothing don't look like they are from the same picture.

As for the color of the skin, you need to add more browns, reds, orange, and yellows. Just look at your hand and see how many colors there are.

If you take the picture and make it grey scale, you'll see that the skin is relatively flat. This is why its usually helpful to get the values down in grey scale first.

Shockwave: Thank you, I'll have to remember that. I have a hard time figuring out where light comes from I should probably take some classes or tutorials on it. I am also trying to break out of the anime style, which is what I taught myself to do first before learning classical life drawing....big mistake.

Kelly X: Thank you soooo much for you kind words it makes me fell all warm and fuzzy inside. I am glad you liked the pic, I stayed up into the wee hours of the early morning several times this past week working on the picture. I wasn't sure if we could put them in the Crit section seeing as how this is normally a contest. if we can then I am gonna do that for 141 that's for sure. Again thank you I love your Sketch book it's one of my inspirations. Thank you both so much I really appreciate the help you have given me.

Yeah... just gotta be thick skinned and pushy.... :muscle: LOL!

Oh Shannanigan does his face look better now with the beard? I really like your bedrock bettie very creative.

Yeah definitely! I think his big grin was distracting me so the beard and his eyes in her direction now helped a lot. The flow goes straight to her face... which is amazingly accurate by the way. You did an awesome job on capturing her expression!

As for her skin, You probably could have been a little more generous with the lights and darks but I don't think its cartoony... mine is cartoony! :D

I used the extra time to fix a few things in my entry. Done now. I'm glad we got a little extra, because I feel better about the final version.
