Nice! Here's my 5 of Pellucidar. 'Cause I didn't have too much time I decided to skim read a few passages online, so it may be that i'm way off with a couple (or all) of my images. Was still fun though! :)

Fantastic work! Thank you all so much for participating

one was not included because it had no icon
and several didn't actually follow the posting direction But seriously I Have't the heart to reject them.
I did in fact specify that the final image should be as a single , ATTACHED @ CA post
this was to impose size restrictions and require that you make the most of the availble size by designing your presentation carefully
Many of you did this beautifully, but more than half of you didnot. and while It wont eliminate your work (which I could by the letter of the law do, like I say Ihavent the heart) it will be taken into account in the Judging. the judgeing may take a while please be patient. and EOW 101 is posted

Please join us as we continue our journey down this road.

Great round. Yet I feel if I entered, I wouldn't have finished.

Gaius - most of your environments have a finished look to them. The colours on the first one are so good it was saved for reference.

OchreHand - heh, those last few look very similar to the last few levels of Devil May Cry 3, which was also based on The Divine Comedy. Hehe. :)

invinciblewombat - do I see a Horia Dociu influence in Steich Tabir? :)

Jim Hatama - wow, nice stuff. The perspective on the last one seems a little off, though.

zelda geek - Good work all around. Could you have played around with the composition in Ilian? It's good to see the perspective is not directly in the center, but I think it could be closer to the center. So as not to have it as one or the other, but in a tertiary place, somewhere along the gradient. I'm unsure of whether the perspective itself should be as symmetrical as it is, but perhaps it is good to keep it that way when it moves closer to the center. Since that would create a balance. Balance between basic and advanced, chaos and order.

Your name is zelda geek and Ariel Waste looks a lot like one of the desert areas in Shadow of the Colossus. Is that the environment you thought of while reading the wheel of time?

Janto - wow! I like that you used traditional media. It's a rare thing on CA.org. Why do so many people jump straight into digital?

Tonic - I think Zazul's lab has too much contrast. The light will affect a lot more than just imminent objects in the environment; it will reach walls, and even those places which are not in direct light will be affected by reflection. I think there should be more green in the light's effects as well. The light that reflects onto the more concealed objects will be lower in saturation, and in this case should be olive green (I think).

Corrick - woah. Those environments are so captivating. I especially like the one with bright light and two people standing in the center. On the cave, I would have put more light on the ceiling, because the way it is now, that darkness distracted me from the distance. Darkness adds depth and I think it is best kept where you want the depth to be - in the distance of the cave. I also think the mountains of madness should have had more space to sit in; the piece seems cramped.

lkjhgfdsa - the perspective is really extreme. Was the dark tower such a visually surreal world?

I love Pellucidar but I don't think Edgar Rice Burroughs ever explained how the inner surface of the world can have gravity consistent with Newton's law (except to some degree at the equator due to the centrifugal force). My brother is a huge fan of Dune. And of course, you can't go wrong with The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It's always great to see some fresh artistic perspectives on the environments of these classic tales.

Everybody did great, deciding who to vote for has been hard. OchreHand's Jim Hatama's and ZupZup's work really catched my attention. Voted for OchreHand in the end because I think his/her Turneresque style fits the subject the best...

I really wished I had participated. Sadly I began a new job a month ago and all I managed to do for this EOW were three thumbnails...

chaosrocks
December 22nd, 2008, 11:06 AM
Earendill Is not in the poll. as he didnot provide me with an icon for his poll. Concidering the amount of boring secretarial work I already had to do and the number of time in EOW requirements it is clearly stated that the Icon is part of it... I just didn't have the time or energy to make and host one for him. He has been an EOW competitior before and knows the ropes.

It will not take him out of elligibility for the judging though.
an important part of working in a concept art field is givingyour bosses the work they are looking for when they are looking for it and in the format they require... Im trying to be realistic here.

I voted Zupzup, his works has something new and still old, fresh and retro, it gives you visualy enough to put your mind to work and build a world out there. The second choise was Corrick, but i see there is no multiple-vote. Great job Corrick.

Man you guys did awesome work!

*sniff * real shame I couldn’t make it in time fore this *cries*. I think on the side I’m still going to do the wasteland anyway because it would be a great challenge and insanely fun.

Anyway my hat’s off to you all again.

So here are some comments for you guys.

Pokepetter-
POS- You really captured the atmosphere of the desert with those gritty textures and coloring. Good going with that indeed.
NEG- You could use some refining in a couple of those pieces, they still come off as a little sketchy. The problem is I think it’s affecting the depth of those pieces especially in piece four.

Gaius-
POS- Dude you have seriously been improving! You got a good overall collection of pieces here and your piece “The Fortress of Dros Delnoch” is an absolute knockout. Ace piece there!
NEG- “Warrior monks Monastery” stuck out like a sore thumb to me. The problem isn’t that you getting quick images in there to establish your environment…that’s perfectly fine…but that’s it’s coming off as rushed and just a little sloppy. I think you needed to manipulate those walls and paint in a lot more of those spots in the mountains. I think that and the first image needed just some more working to them.

yAdam-
POS- Your brushstrokes are so beautiful and lively man! Love all the color action going on in all the pieces. “Symmes Hole” is a killer piece! “Lidi Plains” and “Mahar City” also are fantastic! You were one of the top contenders for sure.
NEG- Not much to really critique but “The Great Peak” didn’t seem as strong as the rest of them. I think little things like the direction of the birds and maybe the for-ground needed more tweaking.

Hideyoshi-
POS- Man you really did awesome stuff this round. First you did something completely out of the norm most would say and choose fantasy. Second you hit the ball out of the park with all the images. All these images work great by themselves but together they rock even more. The last image had my jaw on the floor. That is an insanely good piece…seriously man pat yourself on the back with that one. These pieces are fresh! Everyone did great work, but you brought it up a notch even more.
NEG- Haha…yeah right. “House of change” could maybe use some refining compared to the others…but really…it’s nothing too big.

Tsujni-
POS- You’ve gotten better since I’ve last seen you work. The compositions, colors, and sense of atmosphere is all there in your pieces. Nice going man!
NEG- Still choppy in some areas. I think you could smooth out some spots. Take a look at “Heorot, interior” and the columns. You got the values blocked in but I think those brush strokes are too harsh. If you get in there with a smoother brush and smooth out those areas I think the imagse will work better overall.

OchreHand-
POS- Good colors and the atmosphere is there. You used the textures effectively in those images, especially in the second image with the boat. Love the colors in that one!
NEG- Textures didn’t quite work too well in others. I think in the image “The Condemned Center” it is too much. Not enough paint strokes in there and I think it flattened the work.

Jim_Hatama-
POS- I remember your industrial designs but man your environments kick butt. I actually think you did a great spin on this and each piece is cool. Your use of lighting and colors rocks!
NEG- last piece works as a standalone piece…it doesn’t work too well with the others. I think the last piece needed something like the white rabbit to tie it all together.

Gunnarsson-
POS- First two pieces are pretty solid man and really good job on “The Great Hall”.
NEG- Last three looked like they needed more work and more in them. They still look unrefined in spots and just not as cleaned up as the first two. “Mirkwood” is almost there but the two others not quite.

Invinciblewombat-
POS- You got all the groundwork for those pieces set up. I like the brush action you got going on in the first and third piece.
NEG- The problem is I think the uses of dark tones. The first piece is highly affective and transitions nicely. If you look in the second and third pieces they come off as flat. I think a lot of this especially in “Ghedi Prime” is due to those thick strokes of solid blacks. Try avoiding that pure black and get in there with maybe those dark reds you had in the first one. That will really help bring out the other pieces me thinks.

zelda_geek-
POS- Composition are there and the colors. First and last image is your strongest.
NEG- They still look like there in the work and progress stage. Try spending more time in some areas like on the buildings in the second and the mountains.

Janto--
POS- “Port Gont” is nice and works really well with those colors. Nice painting there man! Last piece is quite nice also.
NEG- I’m missing the cool color action in most of the other pieces you had going on in “Port Gont”. I think the use of darker colors dulled out some parts like in “The Dragon-spoilt Isle”. I’m having a hard time reading if that is tree’s on the left-side or some kind of structure.

Tonic-
POS- Awesome angles and perspective work! All your pieces are pretty rad man. The laboratory really stood out to me in particular.
NEG- Tune down the contrast and highlights in some spots. The lighting doesn’t flow too smoothly in the pieces and sorta distracts the eye. Other then that good work!

ZUPZUP-
POS- Great unique style and nice work! “Mahr Delicacy” is another one of those great pieces that came out of this round.
NEG- Honestly I can’t crit too much in these pieces. I think you could of presented these better though. “No Horizon” and “Approaching The Temple” are pretty small and it’s hard to tell actually what’s going on in them.

Hunchbackmagee-
POS- Those places certainly look ghostly and underworld like.
NEG- I think the images might be veering too much into the abstract. I think the image “Gluttony” works a little better because of the staircase and objects you could relate to. It’s hard to tell what you are supposed to be looking at in images “Simony” and “Limbo”.

Corrick-
POS- Either voting for you or Hideyoshi was like splitting hairs. You did some seriously awesome work. These images work so well together and man I love how you painted them. I’ve been staring at these images for quite awhile now. Just how you did the values and change of lighting and coloring in each piece is something to be really admired at. Yeah I love these piece…a lot!!!
NEG- Nada…not a single thing to critique here.

Earendil-
POS- Nice lighting in “Emerald City” and “Jackdaws Nest” is pretty cool.
NEG- Just need some more working on really. Parts like the curtains in the first image still seem rough and houses in the last image.

Lkjhgfdsa-
POS- I think your design of the Dark Tower is great! Nice going on The wasteland also!
NEG-Watch your values in the pieces and presentation wise I don’t think that yellowish background color isn't helping your pieces. I think it’s subduing your pieces but yeah I’m really nit-picking here.

Well I think I got everyone covered…my hand hurts. Again you guys all did great…wow.

Thanks for your Comments Trashy.

yea I was very rushed to get my 5 images finished.Work and the time of year just kept getting in the way.

Yes the monastery needs to be resolved more, actually they all need a higher level of finish.

I approached these as movies concept images, the focus on trying to resolve a beliveable space that could poetentially be built as a set, minature or built in 3d. I think if I was to crit myself I would say that the basic information is there, but the images do lack finesse. Something I must work at regardless of time.

Anyway enough about my own art struggles, I will gradually work my way through giving a comment on everyones entry. I dont normally do this as I dont usually feel that my work is strong enough to directly crit you guys, rather then just say I thinks its cool.

EOW has helped me a lot over the last 2 years and I really appreciate everyones comments and votes over that time. And of course not forgetting all of Chaos's hard work moderating. Big big thanks Chaos.

Pokepeter : I really like the colour variation in your first image. Nice one.I know its based in the desert but maybe it would have been a nice challenge to have a little more colour variation in the rest. Trashy is spot on about the lack of a sense of depth too.

Yadam: Really nice dude. Lovely pallet ,though I do feel the lighting of your images could be pushed a little more . I find it very difficult to crit your work as it seems graphic and painterly at the same time.Always great to see your work though.

Hideyoshi great work. The final image is really really nice. I think that is quite a brave image for you regarding colour choices. I did feel that it was a stronger story telling device when the figure was heading directly up the mountain in the secound image.

Tsujni Nicely presented . You have a very distinct personal style. Maybe the next step for you is to increase the level of detail and finish in your images that little bit further.

Ocrehand- I am quite enamoured with your entries. I really like the colour variation and the sense of epicness to your entries.Especially the chains in the 4th image. The structure and sense of solidity of the chains work really well with the looseness of the rest of the image. I feel the other images could benfit from somthing like this. The colums in the 3rd image also help illustrate my point I think. * does that make sense? *

Jim Hatama :Great Enviroments, i particularly like the red queen and the catapillar. Though I am not to sure how the other images tie into it, especially the final image.

gunnarson Mirkwood and the Great hall are favourites. I do feel your images do need more atmospheric perspective , so dont be afraid to lay it on.

Invinceablewombat Your first image I think is by far the strongest of the your entries.I think you are on the verge of a break through.keep working at your perspective , atmospheric and technical , and your work will start to pull together tighter.

zelda_geek-I think your 4th and 5th images are the most successful. They just need to be pushed a little more, maybe increase the contrasts a little, be braver.

Janto Its Brillant that you used traditonal media, wonderful to see it.Some nice work here. I do feel though that maybe you have gone dark too quickly, some more colour variation in the shadows would help.

Tonic Nice work. first of all thanks for posting your wips, always interesting to see.I feel your 1st and 4th images are the strongest. you go black a little to quickly * though this could be the laptop I am typing this on*.

ZupZup nice Presentation and the graphic style works very well. Mahar delicacy is a fantastic image.

On a side note I am not too convinced by the one page presentation, it makes some of these wonderful images a little difficult to appreciate in thier full glory. ;)

Hunchbackmagee Ghostly and Hell like, almost like visions. in saying that I feel they are a little too abstract.

Corrick I think these are wonderful with great presentation, they remind me of color mood boards for an animated feature film. In saying that, definitely some bounced light could be used in the 1st image and maybe the 3rd.

Earendil The Jackdaws nest and Mombi's house are nice.I think overall your images do need tightning up though.

Lkjhgfdsa Wasteland works well and there are some really nice angles used in the other images. Though I cant say I like the background color for the presentation.

Ok thats it. Big thumbs up to all who participated, the more we work the better we get.

Happy Holidays everyone and I wish all the EOW Artists a very happy and productive new year.

Thanks for your Comments Trashy.

Thanks for critiquing. You described perfectly where I am at the moment, I love things atmospheric but now I'm learning how to make my work feel more solid.

Hey all, nice work and thanks for the feedback Gaius, Trashy and Max Charlie. To be blunt, I botched the finishing, the pieces are actually so big I had to photograph them and then colour-correct, and using the laptop I went wayyy too dark when I was tweaking Curves. Ah well. I'll put up the pieces properly later on the main body of the site.

I voted Corrick, a great set of pieces that flow nicely into each other and with certainly the best presentation of all of us, but it was a tough call.

pokepeter - I like your style, the one thing I wish there was more of was foreground detail. I think the sandstone quarry is your strongest piece, and possibly following a similar layout to Corrick would have done a lot for some of the others - I'm not convinced you're actually getting anything out of the horizontal format, and putting more work into the sky would have been a nice touch on several pieces. Burning Bush, I'm looking at you.

Gaius - Nice work on Dros Delnoch, it really captures not just the environment, but the mood of the story. I'm curious about your technique - do you combine paints and models?

yAdam - It's nice to see clear bright colours, the one thing I'd say on light is it would have been interesting to push the fact that light inside Earth could be very different to light outside Earth, so Symmes Hole would be a different kind of light to the other pieces, which could have stuff like huge bright patches of glowing sea rising up into the sky around the curve of the Earth. Think how much pain Halo takes to make sure you see the fact that you're on a ringworld.

Hideyoshi - Some favourites of mine here, especially the Howling Forest and the Ivory Tower. (I really love what you did with the tower) I think, based on the other pieces, you could have done something more with the Swamp image to make it a more unique swamp, possibly concentrating on the giant turtle (creature, I know, but it's so big it is an environment too). There's nothing wrong with the swamp, but in many ways it's just a regular swamp environment.

Tsujni - I love these pieces, although I'm not crazy about the presentation, it sort of drowns them out, especially Beowulf's burial mound. Still, a great sence of continuity between them, and Heorot exterior is fantastic.

OcherHand - Very nice, as others have said, a strong Turner-esque vibe to the pieces, which even if iy's nothing to do with Dante, gives them a great dreamlike, classical quality. My favourite, though, is the icy, ghostly scene of the River of Wailing, mostly because it's the one that I can see translating into a game the easiest.

Jim Hatama - What I like most about these pieces is the sense of motion in the Alice-ship, with its glowing trail, although I am slightly skeptical about your treatment of the subject. I don't object to idea of techno-alice on principle, but the only piece that really stands out as a game environment is the Rabbit Hole.

gunnarsson - Mirkwood's the most evocative for me, it captures the idea of crawling about on the branches quite well, and importantly puts the environment in context. I think the main thing to work on is your incidental details - stuff like the bees at Beorn's, while it's great that they're there, needs to be integrated into the piece a bit better to make it a unified whole.

invinciblewombat - It's kind of a shame that reds, yellows and browns are so dominant across all pieces, I'd have liked to see Ghedi Prime and the Guild-Ship Bridge introduce very different colour-schemes and designs. I think the grandeur of the Confrontation with the Emperor is the best of the pieces.

zelda_geek - The Teran Lowlands is the piece I like the best, it's got a nice sense of light and atmosphere. Some of your towns need a bit of work on the architecture, mostly in terms of researching different styles to distinguish between different locations.

Tonic - Some lovely stuff, your Rainbow Station is amazing.

ZUPZUP - It's a shame about the presentation - even if it is the correct presentation - because some of the pieces that were looking fantastic on the WIP thread are just lost. Overall though I really like the style and the pieces, sort of reminds me of a painterly Mike Mignola.

hunchbackmagee - To be honest it's a bit abstract for me to bite at first, but it's certainly a brave take on the subject.

Corrick - Well done, I'd be surprised if you're not a serious contender for top spot. Strikingly drawn, well presented and beautiful colours. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for that style. I'm especially impressed by how you continued on the linesfrom one piece to the next.

Earendil - Nice concepts, but I think the massive script font is a bit of a distraction. Some of the colours seem a bit muddy, it would have been nice to see some more pure, luminous colours in there.

lkjhgfdsa - some very interesting perspectives on these pieces, which are quite effective, and I like the way you've included the figures, I'm seeing an interesting way of taking an old-school, isometric RPG into full 3D. And the Dark Tower design is well thought out.

Good work everyone

um actually Jim...no it isn't... might take em a while to get it there but You are going up there with the rest. you might want to gather a handfull of your best work together
Jason was really impressed with the incredibly high quality of the work for this competition. as well as the very creative solutions so many of you found to the problem of portraying something that so many are familiar with,
as were many others. I have heard nothing but wows and drools so if nothing else all of your work in this rounds has brought you (meaning ALL of you) to the attention of a lot of people.... really
