View Full Version : Tuesday 12/23/08 Release: Environment Speedpainting with Whit Brachna (part 2)

MassiveDVD
December 11th, 2008, 03:00 PM
Available now! :)

In this two part series Whit paints six different environments. He gets the important facts of a picture placed, establishes the mood, solves the key problems, and then simply proceeds to the next image. It gets to the core of picturemaking, and Whit openly teaches the ideas and essential Photoshop techniques behind this approach. Also included are Whit's Photoshop brushes and tool presets.

Going to buy and download this as soon as my cash comes in january.
Something that Im not getting though...
Was the first part out in september? The date states 9/16/2008.

I know the englishspeaking nations of the world has a habit of writing month/day/year instead of year/month/day or day/month/year but the date just doesnt make sense to me...

This was really good, I look forward to part 2.

Maybe I missed it, but how long was spent per image? I am trying to gauge what "speed" really is here.

thanks to everyone who has downloaded this video! I hope it was good.

as for the time spent on each image... it was about 1 hour give or take 10~15 minutes per image. I would have liked to have spent more time fleshing them out, but I had to keep it pretty short to make editing the videos simpler.

take care!

So will part 2 be included with the rest if I wanted to choose it as one of my free downloads for buying the Massive Black Vol. 1 book? Just asking since those freebies are only available to those currently released, but that statement was made a few days before part 2 was released. Just checking. Also, I already bought part 1 and it was amazing, so even if I can't get it free, I'll be buying part 2 anyways :D

Try a download accelerator, like Internet Download Manager (PC) or iGetter (Mac). PM me if that doesn't do the trick, but it probably will.

Thanks! i used a download accelerator , and after it 'stopped' around 70% it almost immediately started up again :)

And heres my REVIEW on part1... !

I watched the mask dl yesterday, so it was a lot of echoing ( not bad, just noticed ) but some of the information is invaluable , especially to me who does a lot of mood and speedpainting :) I'm been using similar techniques ( lasso tool :C ) and I've always hated when I get a shape 'almost right' and I have to trick and edit myself around it til' it works and look as sharp as the other parts etc.

The small tips in this video is what made it so great to me. Talking about layer structure, atmosphere, color picking and other cool tips was really good!

Only minus would be that there isn't so much "why am I doing this ?" but I guess thats not really the goal of those downloads.. :) I'm glad he mention i should go practice =D

So thanks Mr.Blonde, Conceptart.org and Massive Black for releasing those !

I look forward to part 2 :)

great vid! worth every penny. I have one question though, where can I learn how to assign my brushes to the function keys, and learn about tool presets?

hey! thanks for the kind words!

as far as assigning brushes to function keys... you have to script an action. It's pretty easy:

629842

i hope that is clear... it was done with cs2 but it should be the same for all cs photoshops to my knowledge

okay whit, every time you unsharp mask it seems to copy everything and then create a sharpened version on a new layer. How do you set it up to do this? Every time I unsharp mask it sharpens whatever layer was selected and makes no new layer.
I was thinking about setting it up as an action but couldn't really figure out a good way to do it without flattening everything.

hey Dose, It's pretty simple... I just copy all layers (ctrl+shift+c) then paste (ctrl+V) then apply the last filter (ctrl+f) or go into the menu and go to unsharp mask.

hope that helps!

just want to caveat that by saying that I have to first select all (ctrl+a) and then copy all layers and paste, in case anybody else is dense enough to not figure that out right away. Haha, hope I can save somebody some time.

Thanks for explaining that action, Whit... I've been ignoring actions forever due to not really understanding them and having so much else I need to work on anyways, but I didn't realize they were so simple :|

Arg, I'm really wanting to download this vid (along with a few others), but for some blasted reason my school blocks the site you sell from. I know the answer is probably no, but is there any other way purchase a download? If not I can just buy it from home since school's out in a couple weeks. Can't wait :)

Overall, I found this download very educational, learning a lot about value, color, and composition, storytelling and mood.
Only problem is that I don't think my computer can handle Whit's brushes. Every time I try to use them, PS crashes!

Great video, thanks a lot for all the educative information (and the brushes) Whit, this will help me greatly in practicing and improving my environments!
