View Full Version : First Thing In The Morning

It was an advice from a friend: drawing first thing in the morning so that the distractions and nuisances of the daytime won't get in the way, that and you get to start the day with an "artistic mindset" that is supposed to boost your productivity.
Now I kinda liked the idea so for a while, as soon as I woke up I'd probe around blindly for sketchbook and glasses and started drawing, not leaving the bed until I got something good on paper.
It got old pretty fast. It was a good method but my sleeping habits are a bit too chaotic and soon the whole thing translated in me staying in bed late every morning struggling to come up with a decent concept, also my back started to hurt like hell so I went for a different approach: I wake up, I draw the first thing that comes to mind and then I get up, IF what I see after breakfast doesn't make me throw up in my mouth then it's a go, I clean up the sketch and work on it some more during the day and if it's any good is eventually gonna end up here!
Well, that's all I guess, sorry for the eventual errors but english is not my first language, no need to say that comments and critics are really appreciated since the first purpose of this sketchbook is, after all, to better myself as an artist...

Nice work! Big muscular monster is my favorite (for now :)). When i wake up i need 30 min to start thinking normally, no way i could possibly draw :D
Il be shore to check ur updates, your work is nice and clean.
Keep drawing :)

Another morning doodle that made it to clean (well, cleaner) pencils stage, he's probably got that sour expression cause the straps in his crotch are too tight...
@Stevan: thanks, I used to have horribly messy pencils, most of my drawings ended up being a big grayish smudge (hell on heart to ink) so now I'm trying really hard to keep the lines clean and sometimes I even manage to do it!

You'll have to give more to get any kinda crit (yeah, get 'em to post more, you just want to see more of the this guy's work yeah, yeah that's the ticket.......wait, did I type that?!) :D
Nice cityscape. Fine details and perspective, though that roof closest to the view, the one we're standing on, the thick line, feels off. Though if it were mor slanted, then it would go with the rooftop across from it.
no no, wait, the board lines could be pushed up to fix it.

When I was like around 14 I got a drafting desk, you know the ones that tilt. Anyway, after I got it I started buying drawing supplies and Wizard Magazine, eventually I was drawing none stop and eventually got into the habit of drawing for almost 2 hours before school every day!! I guess you can say this is when I really started drawing again, I only wish I didn't stop from between like 4 to 14 :(. Anyway man, very nice sketches. Pretty detailed for morning work! I have a hard time keeping my eyes open in the morning after 8 hours sleep. Do you colour them in the morning as well?

OmenSpirits- The rooftop wiev pic wasn't supposed to be bigger than the light blue frame but eventually I got carried away and ended up drawing more than I sould have, I guess the wooden catwalk is off perspective because of that... mmh, you're right, gotta fix that one up, thanks.
Cooper Snow- Two whole hours before school!? Wow, now that's dedication, I wish I was that motivated back when I went to school!
Thanks but most of those sketches are only started in the morning and then finished/cleaned sometime during the day, most of the time in the morning I'm lucky if I don't stab myself in an eye with the pencil...
Speaking of which here you can see the difference between what I do soon after the alarm clock goes off (1st sketch) and what the doodle looks like after being redrawn to a bigger sheet of paper, the next stage would be the clean pencils, hopefully those'd be ready before bedtime.
The other sketch is the front version of the dude with the body armor, the girl has been roaming in my mind for a while now, I'm still waiting to "see" what the rest of her costume looks like though...

Oh and that morning drawing idea sounds awesome, I just got out of bed and I'm going to try that now.
These last two character sketches are so exciting. I love the detail.

FAST ART- thanks, I've been checking out your works, you got some great stuff there.
nocdav- if you liked http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...d=1228780265 I suggest you take a look at Akihito Yoshitomi's work on Eat Man, it's where I took inspiration for this ilustration, his mechanical parts are literally alive.
Cohen- thanks, I'm gonna clean those up as soon as I figure out the missing details. I'm sure you'll se the benefits of drawing soon after awake, when I do it it affect positively my "artistic disposition" for the whole morning!
Here's a somewhat old concept for an illustration I'm about to redraw, it's supposed to be some kind of fire djinn battling with this guy who's chargin' up some hadoken-esque energy blast, meanwhile the volcano is reawakening, the terrain craking and magma, toxic fumes and stuff are invading the chamber.
Where's all that in the drawing, you ask? Well, I guess I'm gonna have to draw it all... eventually.

If you need help with clean lines, try practicing with long, straight lines for a bit. However, you still have some impressive stuff.

Just one hundred sketches done with posemaniacs.com's 30 second sketches (but with the timer set on 50''), not very interesting, I'm afraid, but shows I'm not slacking off :)

Lately I've submerged myself in the study of the color theory, trying to get the hang of how hue, value and satutation actually works.
It goes without saying that in the end I feel none the wiser but at least I'm gradually losing my primal fear of colors: I used to think of color as a mysterious world, regulated by occult laws disclosed only to few chosen insiders, now I'm actually having fun messing around with it!
Anyhow here's a couple painter sketches, I feel like drawing pigs lately, not sure why... :)

Thanks to everyone! :bashful:
Feels like years since I went to the beach or got out for a beer with my friends, lately all I've been doing is drawing and studying theory  but I believe that something is starting to show through my works so I have no regrets!
Also, more pigs, for some reason they keep popping up in my drawings.

Really digging that skull, reminds me of something out of Evil Dead II, I'd like to see a little more mass in the back of his skull though.
Anyhoo, keep fighting the good fight.

yeah, that skull is coooool! pigs are funny and portraits are neat :)
so nothing to crit, just keep studying :)

August 28th, 2009, 12:17 PM
@JoshMurr- Ehi thanks, now that's a nice thing to hear! Come to think of it I should concentrate more on creating a specific center of interest in my drawings, something to pause the eyes on, mmmh... I'm gonna start working on that right now!
@AustenFM- Yes! That's precisely what I was thinking when I drew it! :D
About the mass you're right, I was trying to put less details in the back to have the front part coming forward and gie more 3d feeling to the skull but I'm not sure I was doing it right.
@jatherip- Thank you man, you're right: let's keep studying and praticing, that's the spirit!
Today no pigs, instead here's a sketchy old bushi in hakama.

Little illo I'm doing inbetween more "serious" stuff, now that I notice the arm of the girl is innaturally long and thick and the hanging potted plant on the upper right attract too much attention, too much contrast I guess...

Part of a bunch of sketches based on the idea of variuos psychological trauma (not mines :D) than can scar children's psyche, you can guess what this one's about.
@Cannibal: thanks, the skull was an experiment with focus and depth, something went wrong along the way though :) btw, nice light studies you got there!

Thanks Admiral, wow, your very first post no less! I'm honoured :)
Here's something different, two random pages for a for a comic project that never got to see the light of publication, I tried to experiment by doing everything in digital media, from layouts to "pencil" to "ink", everything down to the last detail was done in painter..
The result is quite a bit less than what I hoped for, I enjoyed the freedom resulting from use of layers, the blessed ctrl-z and whatnot, the flip side of the coin is that everything looks _artic cold_ and building perspectives is not a very frienldy process.
I know that for the most part my incompetence is to blame, still, I'm left wondering if a complete digital processing is really suitable for comics.
Oh, well...

@ Rick- Youre welcome, drawing in the morning is great, too bad lately I'm going to bed around 5/6 in the morning -____-
Posemaniacs is a nice tool, maybe not anatomically correct (no kidding) but still great for pratice! Actually that reminds me that I should probably go back to pose pratice myself.
@ exdakly- thanks, lately I moved from pencil to tablet, still trying to decide which one suits me better (if only you could ctrl-z in real life...).
@ RyanRyan- Grazie! Great stuff on your sb btw!

@ Vertical- Thanks for the links, they're really helpful, definitley a step forward compared to the often awkward anatomy of posemaniacs!
@ FallenAngel-Thanks, I still think that digital inking is the way to go but in my (small) experience to have good ol' analogic pencils under that is still the best thing.
Here's another wip I'm doing inbetween stuff, I've alway found that little Asimo robot brick-shittingly creepy.°____°'

April 14th, 2012, 04:11 PM
Here's something I'm working on right now.
There's no real concept behind it nor any kind of meaning or symbolism, I just sketched what was on my mind at the moment.
Lately I'v been asking myself a simple question that somehow I failed to consider before: what is that I like to draw?
I always assumed that whatever comes out of my pencil is necessarily what I want to draw and in a sense that's correct, sifting trough the production of an artist we can somehow derive the arithmetic mean of his preferences and his tastes.
Still, those informations are only obtained post-audit.
This sketch, instead, is taking shape and expanding organically, like in a graphic flux of consciousness each new element is added to the whole in reaction to the sum of the antecedents. It has no 'goal', no blueprint to refer to judge its grade of completement, I'll claim it's finished when I'll be happy with it, or bored.
Come to think of it I'd say that if this sketch represents something then that something is the result of a bottom trawling in my head in this days, if it symbolize something then it's probably something deep and meaningful that keeps going completely over my head.
So far it's telling me that I have a fetish for frozen zombies stored in liquid nitrogen wearing bondage gear .__.
