I desperately need some motivation to keep me practicing, creating and conceptualizing. I figure starting a thread here will help keep me on my toes in commiting to drawing everyday. What you'll see here is part of that :) It might not be good, but I'm gonna stick at it so time to get this show on the road!

*Feedback is always welcome

I'm working on becoming more loose with my style, getting that painted look down pat. Here's a rough painting that I've started today. This is the first progress pic of it, I'll add more as I do them.

*Just finished adding some details to the face to get a feel for the final look, still a long way to go though :(

The only advice I have: Keep Practicing. (I like the turret though)

I nearly didn't get anything up today, but thanks to a few episodes of scrubs and a sketchbook I managed to come up with something....anything! No references, but I figure it's pretty obvious haha...

I watched a western the other day, thought I would do some themed silhouette based work. They're a bit rushed, and it shows I think :(

environment speed paint, seems to be lacking something, but it's practise all the same :)

Nice stuff here. The first environment is beautiful. It feels cold and damp. I can almost smell the air there.

Cheers Kristo, I've done some life drawing (I study animation so it's a given) but I really should post some of that stuff on here. Thanks!

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
January 12th, 2009, 03:04 AM
Here's some random new stuff, I'll post some anatomy studies next time hopefully :)

The Trike is an older picture, was a waste of time cos I don't really like it :(

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
January 12th, 2009, 06:50 PM
Kristo Novo mentioned doing some anatomy studies which prompted my memory to throw some on here (seeing as everyone else does right) so here's some from my sketchbook over 2008.

January 13th, 2009, 05:05 AM
Maybe the digital stuff needs some work but pencil and pen sketches are awesome and that's what matters the most imo. Great graphic style too, do you make graffiti?

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
January 13th, 2009, 05:56 AM
Hey Thanks LOrin, I may get around to finishing him one day, but due to the time he's taken so far I've lost a bit of interest :( I wish I wasn't so sporadic but I lose interest in stuff unusually fast. Maybe one day though :)

Cheers revenebo, I'm workin my ass off trying to get my digital stuff up to speed. I'll post some more refined stuff on here next, as this is a sketchbook I've been avoiding putting the more serious stuff on, but tis true what you say regardless mind you. And yes! I love graffiti, and engage in it on a small scale, mostly it resides in my sketch book however once I became old enough to have a criminal record :(

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
January 13th, 2009, 06:05 AM
In light of rev's comment here's a couple of marker pieces from my sketch book. I'm not so fond of the less detailed one, but I was going for the old school burner style A. cos I like the mix it up and B. I didn't want to limit myself to any particular style, as I'm prone to going into too much detail (is there such a thing!)

I've also included a more refined digital piece for y'all to have a squiz at. Feedback?

Thanks Shardana and J.Roxanne, appreciate the positive remarks :) Here's a couple I finished this week. The armor one is an old sketch that I dug up and funkified (cos it was done in biro) and the comic style one is the first drawing of a character in a small comic idea that may see development (if I can stick to it). Enjoy! Feedback???

I really love your pencils the most, but your digital work definitely shows that you're improving on it, and you have some really great ideas in here. This is really inspiring to me as an aspiring concept artist, so keep up the awesome work. Your line quality is superb

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
January 16th, 2009, 02:55 AM
Done a few pics over the last couple of days. The afro dude is a character design for a rap artist called Tehn Diamond, check him out if you're interested :)
As for the chick, thought I would bust out some crazy techno gadgetry for fun. Both are drawn with biro and just touched up in CS3.

Hey folks, I been real quiet the last couple of days, just been busy tinkering away on other stuff and haven't had time to do a whole lot of art. Also found out that I'm getting booted out of my house! That kinda sux, gives me 3 weeks to find another place, bit down about it too be honest. Us artistic hermit types don't like instability because it generally cons equates to less art :( I'll soldier on though, having a job would sure help however.

Thanks for the love jeremygordon, metal-mike, bouroune and hygami, it's always great to hear that I'm going in the right direction :) And mischeviouslittleelf, I'd never seen Cole's work, but I'm sure stoked you can see some of his flavor in my work cos that guy is off the chain good!

I've started rendering that techno chick, hope to do a full color version of her based on the monochrome, should look saaaweet I hope.

January 20th, 2009, 01:19 AM
dude, your mecha stuff is sick. im trying to get that stuff down right now, its hard. keep up the cool work, i love how the graff style shows through

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
January 20th, 2009, 09:36 AM
Thanks for the kind words RichKid, it's funny but I never notice that my work is graffitiesque, funny how that works. I can't say I mind though, it's nice to have a style. I love drawing mecha stuff though, it's tedious but so satisfying!

Just a quick sketch before bed. Felt like designing a female armor.

oh and btw, I find myself wanting some stars beside my sketchbook. If you think I deserve it then by all means hand them over :D It's all good if you don't though, I won't take offense :)

Tank Girl WOHO!

Nice pencilmanship in #36. Just cuorious, but why is tha Kana letters backwards?

Keep on working.

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
January 29th, 2009, 07:50 AM
Cheers heda! As for why the letters are backwards, I got no idea? That's just the way the font was that I got of the net :)

I been goin nuts sketching in ball point blue lately, it's so easy and fun and I dont have to worry about smudging or using multiple drawing implements for different stages. Just straight up biro :D So here's another, photo ref for the Rhino ;)

Hey!

aprentice: Thanks mate, always appreciate feedback :)
heda: I see what you mean with the viewpoint, I'm pretty sure it's cos I didn't put a shadow onto the rhino :( haha oops!
M0RS: Cheers mate, that's the idea I guess, I really want to be the swiss army knife of visual development!
tmbritton: Thankyou! Yeh I'm a bit of a robot fetishist, so many options :D
comixnut: Thanks muchly dude, you got some sweeeeet inks going on, perhaps some time I could colab with you cos I just can't get enough of your inking style!

Well I just moved house so I've been short on time. Really into the bosozoku style of hotrodding lately, just checkin the scene out on various blogs. It's very ummmm.... different ;)

Verehin: Hey thanks for that :)
epicnoses: Thanks for dropping in and the crit. I have to agree with you from a technical standpoint, however I think you'll find the vast majority of initial vehicle design sketches leave little if any room for ground clearance, suspension and often don't even have tyres =p

Here's a coupla dudes I did before bed the other night. Had a bit of a drawing block and lull of late. They were done super fast, hence the messiness :(

Hey there, thankyou all so much for the positive remarks! Really appreciate you adding stars and what not :) Hopefully I'll get some more feedback ;)

I've really had a tough time drawing of late, hence why I haven't posted anything much, even though this is supposed to be an everyday thing :( Once I escape the clutches of artist block I'll make with a fresh batch of goodies. For now though, here's some random stuff from the last few weeks... some of which is just WIP (if they ever get done).

Uni commenced today, so I'm back on the mad drawing train, with lots of lecture pad fun to be had!

Thanks once again for the kind words akabraille and localfatheaded, I know what you mean with the life drawing, cos that's exactly what I do when I got nothing in mind, just go from life :) Works a charm. I should really put more studies up here, but I get lazy with scanning them =P My bad!

Here's todays in class efforts (Warning, NUDITY!):

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
March 3rd, 2009, 10:38 PM
Well we've finally started studying pre-production at uni this semester, which I was so much looking forward to. Watched a DVD with Feng Zhu the other night on vehicle design, loved it so much, well worth the watch. Suffice to say I got cracking today with some quick designs of my own :)

March 6th, 2009, 06:21 PM
This is a pretty neat sketchbook. Personally, I really like your machine drawings and renders, and the environmental pieces.

PeNcIl ReBeLlIoN
March 9th, 2009, 07:47 AM
Cheers asatira! Thanks, I'm pretty partial to mechanical stuff really, is fun makin it up.

Been really knuckling down with concepts lately, just bangin the stuff out so my skills go up fast :D We've been given the task in my pre-production class to choose a fairy tale to do concepts of. My good mate in my group suggested we do the Wizard of OZ. Sick idea! So we're keeping the general storyline, with some minor sub plot differences. So I've included my first pic of the cowardly lion. He don't look so cowardly in the pic, but rest assured he's got some emotional difficulties haha ;) and he's also a prince BTW, random I know, perhaps I'll explain later....

March 9th, 2009, 09:43 AM
great sb mate, really dig your style! your doing well the stylized characters and the exaggerated anatomy looks really good, your enviros are filled with great mood, but like the others already said some anatomy studies won't be bad to do, they will help you to develop your style much more ;) post more!

Holy crap! So this is what happens when I change my icon in the sketchbook forum... it's true what they say about first impressions...

Really not cool about having not updated here in ages, but I have really been very busy with uni and graphic designing, it's all been a bit much really. On the bright side I've been drawing everyday and really feel I'm making some solid progress narrowing down my mistakes and getting by drawings sorted.

I wish I was able to type a bit longer, but I have to get another design churned out, so this update is just to feed my starving sketchbook.

Thanks so much for dropping in and leaving me a note, your're great motivators! When I get time I'll endeavor to reply to you individually :)

Here's more for the Wizard of OZ project (not like I've had a chance to touch anything else!).

Damn huh, massive delay for updating this sketchbook. I got a new computer and totally forgot my password for conceptart!!! Yeh I was spewin, but I didn't really have the time to worry about it, still got my nose pressed to the grindstone with assignments. Seriously, this animation course I am doing has a floggin unbelievable workload. I got a mate at another institution studying the same thing and he bludges all the time!!!! There's my rant, now here's some recent stuff, pretty much entirely for the wizard of OZ project...

hey man I really love your style. You do some really great vehicle designs. The only real crit i can give is on the one piece of the flying monkey. He looks a bit too human-proporitoned to me. I think it would be really cool to see him more in the shape of a real monkey of that size.

hmm.. that makes me kinda want to draw a flying gorilla 0.o

Cheers for the crits and comment! It's always great to get your feedback and after all that's why people post sketchbooks anyway :) Hopefully I'll get to updating more frequently as uni has finally allowed me to take a breath....

Hey there folks, just a quick upload before bed, once again leaving it alone for far too long. Can't wait for the holidays so I can produce some more work and all that sweet sweet spare time for interneting :)

jaykrishna- cheers, I'm glad!

My57- I really gotta put some of my life drawing up here aye! Will get to that at some stage, I pretty much keep my portfolio at uni though, so I seldom have it at home for scanning, hence the lack of it on my SB :( Will rectify that soon I hope...

Hungry_Wombat- Yes indeed, I have a tendency to overdo the details, my issue is trying to stop myself! I do loves it....

comixnut- Thanks again for dropping by! My new comp is great, though it's leading me to procrastinate so much as this thing can actually run Fallout 3 pretty nicely..... I love that game far too much.

quackart- Cheers mate, I do try, but I'm still learning so much all the time, just waiting to hit that awesome level where someone will employ me :D

So here's some of my most recent sketchin around and what have you...

My goodness it has been a very long time since I put something up on here. haven't really had much stuff that I wanted to though, not for lack of cranking it out. Still, its been mostly linework (yeh that seems to be all I do right?) which is why I've hesitated so long cos nothing ever actually seems to get finished! Well enjoy some of my rough stuff at least, until I actually get around to "really" finishing something...

Hey there, it's been a relatively unproductive few weeks, but I've started to make some progress towards improving my color skills, trying to say more about the environment by being selective with my color. I used to think it was cheating, but I've been picking off peoples palettes and getting a better understanding and that really helped, so I thought I'd try my own eye at it and painted up the little guy fishing. I think it's a fair site better color wise than a lot of my stuff....

Bergulf - Noted Bergulf, I think you're right, I was going through a lull and tended towards more generic posing, a product of laziness it be.

Pyroclasm00 - Thanks aye, I'm currently attending Griffith university in Australia (the Queensland College of Art).

Jizu - Thanks mate, here's some more now :D

luness - Thanks heaps for dropping by, means a lot :) Really glad you like them!

Wiggles - Awww shux, your favorite? Damn aye, thanks muchly

gutss - Indeed you have spotted my weakness, I go through stages where I'm satisfied with them but on a lot of my pics I end up leaving the face to the last minute. A habbit I'm trying to break. Thanks for sharing!

Norris - Cheers Norris, thanks for stopping by :) You have a sketchbook?

It's been a fricken age since I posted anything. Alas, I am not dead, just over encumbered with uni and my new job as a concept artist/character animator for a new iphone game I can say nothing about ;) I've done a fair whack of stuff between now and my last post, even some 3D but nothing really "finished", so here's a snifter while I've got a sec...
Sorry for being rudely non-responsive, holidays are just over the horizon!

Understandable PR and congadulations on your new work schedule as it's pretty difficult to find. You've posted a nice batch of painting this round. Although I am doing some independent animation stuff myself, I also find it's tough to post as often as most CA artists do. Anyway hope to see some of f your animation stuff soon, and pop by my thread sometime if yuo will! bye!;)

You've got a killer graphic style, and i dig your linework, gorgeous candy colors as well.
