EDIT: So, um, nevermind, this is the space pictures thread now. Win!
---
So, I'm kind of getting bored of the lounge, so I thought I would do something else.
Let's see some stuff that inspires you! We've had mention to stuff in other threads, but let's get it all in one place. I was thinking of putting these in the cheer-me-up thread, but I thought it would be better in one place.
When I'm despairing, there is one site in particular that I absolute love, and many of you probably know it.
Astronomy Pic of the Day (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/)
Not only are a lot of the pictures just really awesome aesthetically, but they make my imagination run wild!
I'm only going to post one of them, as you really should go to the site, and the images are really huge resolution (which is awesome).
This particular one is my current background on my laptop.
533165
It's actually half the size of the original available on the site, so, check it out. :D
Anyone else have something to show to spark my imagination? :) I'll post more as I think on it!

It does get oooooooold when you get multiple posts a day posting about just the idea/discussion of "inspiration," yes. We have THREE such stickies in the Art Discussion forum alone.
Now, to make a post saying, "Hey guyz I have an awesome site for you to check out!" to call attention to something new is totally cool (and it is a great image)! :)

I think the lounge could use something like this.
anyway i find pretty mundane things inspiring, objects and the like (anything that tells a story)... but for some reason these two stick out,
http://home.btconnect.com/toadsnatcher/photos/telepoles.jpg
telegraph poles...
http://www.builtstlouis.net/industrial/images/gasometer-fpse111.jpg
Gasometers...
but other than that... concept art itself, and sometimes fine art...
oh and mouths, papa always said you can tell a lot about a person from their mouth.

To me there is something inspiring in our moon. Not that particular picture but in general. I love looking at it when it's clear sky.

Can't expect everyone to know every thread that exists in this forum. Some of us are pretty exclusive to one thing or another. Not all of us live here after all. ;)
But I suppose it comes down to nitpicking when someone wants to share something in the -Lounge-, huh?

Haha, gotta agree there! Chief reason to come to this site, right? ;)

Nope, except: #1 They aren't just random threads, they are stickies (not to mention the oft neglected wiki). #2 Search function if needed to use our much informative archiving. #3 She was proposing the start of an inspiration link list which we have and thus instead of having two to merge, etc. it makes sense to add to the one already running.

Then why not ignore it and move on and spare the poor bloke from pretentious quipping? I thought thats what mods were for if this was a problem.

Oookay, I think you're confused on my tone or intention. I don't see the "pretentious quipping"--I pointed out an existing thread and complimented the picture. I added smilies! :D :D :D
Daestwen is a mod, btw (and not a bloke...what's the femme counterpart of bloke? Blokette? :P)
Speaking of great stellar shots...did anyone get/see a nice shot of the Jupiter/Venus/Crescent Moon that happened recently? I saw part of it on Thanksgiving (US) but not the whole deal.

Sorry, I don't know the genders of 99% of the people here, but sure. Blokette works. In any case, a majority of the posts I happen to catch you in you're referring people to other threads for what they post. In seeing that, one's left to derive a know-it-all impression, but we're all entitled to that I suppose. :) :) :) No one likes a know-it-all. Regardless, it appeared to be rudeness masked in a veil of attempting to be "helpful."
In any case:

The shot of the smiley you're talking about. It was pretty fun to look at, but a shame normal digital cameras distort shots of the moon enough that taking a lasting picture of it was next to impossible for us regular folk.

serto: No worries man, Mirana knows her shit and it's good that she pointed those threads out because I so rarely browse outside of Chow and the lounge anyway. :P
Why don't we turn this into a space pictures thread...?
GIMME YOUR SPACE PICTURES! ROAR.
ps, i want to be an astronaut...
edit: it's 3:30 in the morning and i'm high out of my mind on jetlag. Please take this into account... ... roar...
edit 2: And just to keep on-task...

Sorry, I don't know the genders of 99% of the people here, but sure.
I try to use gender neutral (or both) pronouns until I know for sure. We've more femmes on the board than some might think...

Ha, if you'd posted over 2k you'd probably find a lot of overlap in info too. I try to pair it with a note about the search 'cause if you really want the info that's the quickest way (with massive amounts of good stuff). I am trying to be helpful (hey, I post the actual links! As do others!), but after so many I'm sure I come off over the interwebz as abrupt. I also sneak into the CC and WIP forums when work allows, but I've been staying out lately since I get damn addicted to it and could spend hrs helping people (then I'm soooo in trouble with clients). Helping people/discussion with stuff in Art Discussion/Edu/Job/Lounge takes less break-time than paint overs and critical thinking. Bad Mira.
Thanks for the pic link! All I could find was teeny little shots. I didn't know it would end up looking like a smiley/frown! When I spotted Venus/Jupiter the other night I was like, "WTF. One of those is Venus, but the other CAN'T be Mars." I didn't realize Jup could get that bright.
Daestwen: Those pictures do NOT look real. Science is AWESOME.

Science IS awesome, but those pics are only half real. D: They are real, but not really in the visible spectrum, so human eyes would never see them like that...
Instead they take a bunch of pictures in a bunch of spectrums and put them all together and give each one a different arbitrary colour... There's a bit of an art form to it!
God I wish I could see X-rays, space would be so awesome to look at. D:

I'll try to keep the gender thing in mind *shrug*. In any case, I was not trying to be an ass, but rather point out it looked like you were being one. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Also, NG.com has a ton of awesome pictures for events daily around the world, worth peeking at if you hear of something interesting happening and want some coverage. The NASA site is also a really nice place, and great for reference...

Ain't that the truth. Though, with a decent telescope these days you can break it out and take a peek at the visible gas clouds yourself easily.

Semirelated in the fact it has something to do with space and art but interesting all at the same time:
"Big Bang Glow Hints at Funnel Shaped Universe"
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn4879
"Gaping Hole Found in the Universe..."
http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN2329057520070823
For an interesting read.
"UFOs in Ancient Historical Art"
http://sprezzatura.it/Arte/Arte_UFO_eng.htm
Something neat to think about and look at. I find it pretty interesting to see the cross-cultural references to beings of the sky, depictions of the "sun," and otherwise space-related or "extra-terrestrial" interpretations in ancient art.
Lastly, and most related, great space pics can be found at amazing resolutions at: http://hubblesite.org/gallery/

Damn! Ha, one wouldn't think the science guys knew much about being artistic, what with NASA's concept work being so generally clumsy looking. ;)

Everybody's got the potential for assy-ness on this forum. Better get used to it. ;)
