SUPER Stylised Challenge - December 2008 - Troll
Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.
IMPORTANT: By entering this challenge you give 3DTotal.com Ltd. permissions to reproduce the submitted material in 2DArtist Magazine and all subsequent editions of the Work (by which we mean 2DArtist), its ancillaries, and other derivative works, in any form or medium, whether now known or hereafter developed, in all languages, for distribution throughout the world. 3DTotal.com Ltd will credit each artist accordingly, providing they email lynette@3dtotal.com with their full name, conceptart.org name, email address and website (if applicable).
So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!
This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!
What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!
What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!
NEW: Please aim to create your final images, and save your WIPS, at resolutions of around 2000 pixels upwards, to ensure that when you images are published they are high quality. Any screebshots are understandably going to be screen resolution (72dpi), so simply capture those as large as you can when saving out your WIP stages.
There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.
For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 31st December 11:59PM GMT - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th January 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th January to the 15th January 2008, when the winners will be announced!
We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!
Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (31st December 11:59PM GMT), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!
Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!
Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!

2. If you want to vote but are not a contributor of the challenge, you need to have been registered on the ConceptArt.org Forums for at least the last six months, AS WELL AS have 50 posts already to your name.
3. It goes without saying that all voters MUST look through each of the entries before posting their score.
4. Finally, don't vote for yourself or get your friends to vote for you in an attempt to influence votes, it's not an attractive quality.

I love it! Lynette, I´ve done some searching on the subject, and you could almost say that “troll” is a synonim for monster. They ’re really varied in forms and shapes, depending on the geographical location mythology (Sweden, England, Norway) , and that without looking at other recent encarnations like Warcraft world, Discworld, etc etc.
My question is... is there ANY limitation to our interpretation of the troll character?
Good luck everyone!

Sneaked a bit of time today for some Troll fun. I sketched a grumpy old Troll in a very basic hunch pose (I might give him an action pose now I have a look that I like). Below is the inital Pencil sketch and the first clean up pass with a scattering of liquify to help sort out some proportions. I want to add lots of dark hair but I thought I'd leave that for the later stages in photshop and just concentrate on the overall design and muscle structure for now.

Wow SOUTHERN great job on your troll, absolutely love the design, the right hand (his right) is really good, conveys a good sense of weight and power to it, I can believe this guy would mess someones day up with that club! really cool work man.
Urih_pta2, nice sketch, the facial expression looks very curious and conveys a sense of stupidity in the troll, which i believe is what ur going for, so well done!
Looking forward to starting on this challenge myself, I got the community activities bug now!

is there ANY limitation to our interpretation of the troll character?
nope! as long as your entry is a stylised troll-like being, it'll be fine. that's what these challenge threads are for though, so people can advise you and give their crits if they think you're straying too far from the brief. can't wait to see your entry!
great work everyone, as always :)

thanks. :)
this was all done in PhotoShop.
I lay down on the rough sketch a couple of Hi-Res stone, rust and canvas textures,
used on lowered opacity layers, with different blending modes.
this gives you a nice random color+texture surface on which you can render out your image.

Chuckmate: Awesome lighting man. The gif was a treat to watch. I'd love to see you on a dvd working on a piece like this.
Tommoy: A dynamic little pose there hanging from the branch. You have the colours well balanced already.

Hi everyone,
this is my first time participating in this contest. This is my first sketch. I did it a few minutes ago. I wanted to capture the idea quickly with elements of storytelling. I didn't want to work simply on a character. So this is the troll, Eggar. The title of the piece is "Who there?". Eggar is grooming himself by the river to look like his favorite Troll doll. This is just the simple idea. I will add more detail to his skin and costume in the painting process. Comments and crits are welcome.

Chuck, thanks dude. you're tha man, your progress gifs are always a treasure.
Urih_pta2, thanks to you as well! i think defining a clear lightsource and defining the form some more on your troll would really help. for example try and render the red cloth around his arm so that it actually looks like it is wrapping around the cylindrical form of that arm....it's a pretty fun idea you've got going.
AlexBoy. Southern and Richkid, sweet stuff! Artina, sketch looks real promising!
cheers to all :)

I cant wait to see what Bstks and Einen come up with.
Southern, fantastic work man, I see your active on a lot of stages. I like the one with the blood and hair the most, are you going to give him a background?
Urih-pta2, good first sketch, the perspective of his beard looks a little to strong. Your second one looks better. Great pose. Strange to see some parts already finished and other parts in a rough sketch phase.
Hopsy, a real troll character!. Somehow I like the first b/w version the most.
Richkid, funny character and what a great rendering, it almost looks 3D.
Chuck mate, great style, just superb, great face, the little eye that pops out, the beautifuly lit horn, I only have doubts about the shortness of his torso, but that can be a stylished thing;).
Tuovni, very stylized, love the little details like the elbows and tummy. Curious what final will look like.
Alex boy, a troll hockey player? Why not. I like the colored outlines and your choice of skintone. Cant wait to see this with a background.
Jpedro, lol, the face, the hanging nipple, def the most funny one. I guess she did a lot of waxing already:).
Machuca, great movement, I like the sketch more than the line drawing, but maybe thats a matter of taste. I dig the part that he's coming out of a tree, somehow thats very trollish I think.
Artina, storytelling always makes it more interesting. I love the expression on his face. I'm very curious how it looks when its finished.
MurdokX, very nice work, I like your approach with the thumbnails. If he looks like a troll? Absolutely! Although its the indian version. He also looks like someone here in Holland, Geert Wilders.
Panic attack, the expression on his face is great, personally I think the bleu and red tones are a little to bright but that can be a matter of taste.
Chuck,mate.

hehe.. yeah..
well I usually don`t say stuff like that, but in this case it`s true -
the size of the head on my troll-dude is intentionally disproportional to the body.
(as in, it`s LARGER in comparison)
I wanted it to look like one of them Jim Henson giant muppets... always felt it makes `em look really disturbing...

SOUTHERN - Awesome! Great design and I love the colouring.
Urih_pta2 - Great so far, I like his expression and his outfit.
RichKid - Nice Colouring. Like the face and the proportion of the features.
Chuck,Mate - Love the colouring, the contrast and lighting are great so's the expression on the troll!
tuovni - I like the comic style of this, it's funny!
jpedro - Something a bit different, the only female troll so far!
Machucha - I like the pose and expression on this guy and his rocky texture.

Hey everyone,
Here's what I have so far. I started to add values to the sketch to flesh it out more. I then proceeded to refine the values and go as far as I could with that. I also flipped the image to help me check mistakes and all. I added the first layer of color to which I will be adding more color variation and texture. Comments and crits are welcome.
PS. I tried to edit my original post but I was unable to for some reason. If anyone can help with this I would appreciate it.

Macaruba: That is a very original idea to try to make your MP into a Troll. That would look awesome as a caricature type of sketch with troll skin and some troll characteristics like tusks, big ears and such.
Chuck Mate: That looks awesome. I love the skin texture and the tatoos. I also like all the color variance you have included. great work.
Machuca: Your stylization is great. I like the proportions and the expression on his face. I also like the details like the branches and skulls. I would recommend pushing the contrast of the textures a bit more to sell the difference between the rocky bits and the fleshy bits.
MurdokX: I like the pose and the story. I would recommend defining the small details a little more, like the weapon and the costume.
Tuovni: I really like the style you have used for your troll. I also like the contrasting personality of how you used a nasty character and turned him into a hopeless romantic. great work.

Thanks for the crit ashess, I made some adjustments to my sketch :) I like you're sketch/thumbnails for your troll, be good to see how it comes out!
I like how people's designs have developed.
Machucha - The final looks good, like the colours, background and the rays of light coming through the trees.
artina- Nice, love his hair and the little troll in his hand! haha, i remember having one of them for a pencil top as a kid.
liransz - Very cute troll! Like the sketch work and the finished piece!
Urih_pta2 - Coming along great! The colours look good and I like the addition of the extra players.

Made some more progress on my troll. Added a background and some more detail to his body and made some alterations.
http://www.biscuitofdoom.net/Forum/troll_pencil_08.jpg
Not sure now whether to ink it or go straight on to colour? or do both...? I don't think my previous attempts of ink and colour have been too successful as i don't think my digital colouring is too great yet, so i'm unsure of how to proceed.
Do we have to use colour for this? or could it be a black and white piece?
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated!
Like you're troll so far Einen!

liransz multiple eyes should have thought about that one!
Macaruba I think the background is having too much attention, nicely ink'd!
Einen love the warm and cool mood!
Jason01 wow! great explorations many have strong first impression on me. love the composition n' mood, is there going to be stuff on the background to give more clues of the environment?
The Antarctican- great use of blur, i just hope he would have something on his finger tip
Dreygus- I think the photo background should be either executed like your character or just take it out
Timmy - very surreal, loving this piece,

the_original_sean: nice expresion on the goats :D you could make the piece better by desaturating certain elements or background (and shadows maybe), and thus get a more depth-ish look, 'cause it looks kinda flat now. I like it's humour though :D

thanks for the advice timmy i dimmed things down a bit. they still look like cutouts i think. anyone have any other suggestions?
another question for anyone- if you look at the goat's hooves, my original ink has a grey border all the way around it. what i did was scan my drawing, then i selected all the white (fuzziness all the was up) and deleted it. is there a better way so i get JUST black?
