View Full Version : New monitor broke Photoshop?

Hi, all. I've just acquired a big, beautiful new monitor, and it's had a bizarre effect on Photoshop (version 5.0). None of the tools function -- no matter what tool I choose, it shows the Hand icon. It's not really the Hand tool (it doesn't work), but that's the graphic the program displays.

The thing is, this only happens about 80% of the time. Sometimes restarting Photoshop fixes it, only for the problem to return at a random point as I'm working.

The resolution of the new monitor is 1920x1200. I've tried setting it to lower resolutions, and that doesn't seem to have any effect on the problem at all. Besides, I was told that higher resolution monitors would not affect the performance of older programs... :er:

Does anyone have a clue what's happening here?

Have you tried hooking up the old monitor again? Try some things to isolate the problem so that your sure its the monitor. This would strike me as very odd if it really was the monitor causing a problem in photoshop, especially since restarting PS fixes it. Have you changed anything else on your computer in the process of installing the new monitor? Are all of your drivers up to date?

its not possible that this problem is caused by your monitor it must be a coincidence and you did something else- monitors don't need drivers.

Figures. As soon as I posted my question, the problem went away. Thanks for your suggestions, though -- it may return.

I'm wondering if it was a resource/memory issue? Everything else on my computer was running more slowly that day.

Alright, I found the solution. I'll post it here in case anyone else runs into the same problem.

In a way, the new monitor was to blame. I had been using PrtScrn to copy large resolution images to my computer's clipboard, and apparently it caused a memory shortage which was what caused Photoshop to act strange.

All I had to do was clear the clipboard. Start Menu --> Run --> type Clipbrd --> Edit --> Delete. Then everything worked fine.
