i started this painting last night and thought i would take some pics of the process. i didnt take the first shot until about almost 2 hours into it...so you missed the initial burnt umber underpainting.

A couple crits -

Its hard for me to tell what is going on in the painting (maybe becasue its unfinished) But why is the background perpendicular to her?

Her arm looks REALLY big, a bit too unproportional..

Anyways, how detailed was the underpainting? DO you jsut do a basic outline or do you do an almost complete monochromatic painting? Especially in detailed areas like the face?

I like the skin tones/colors.

Thanks for posting another WIP, I appreciate it.

haha, the background looks weird because im painting ontop of an old painting i started and didnt like. so the new painting is of just the girl. yeah her arm looks really huge when i shrink it down. i guess since i really cant step back from this large painting its hard to tell how big it really is. i just do a really quick underpainting getting the basic structure down...nothing too important. probably takes about 10 minutes for the underpainting. ill try and fix the arm some...

Do semi-transparent and transparent oils sometimes give you trouble when you paint over an old painting?

daarken

mtw: not really. i usually paint pretty thickly, but sometimes i like to leave a little bit of the old painting showing through. in one of my self portraits (5.6.3) i left almost all of the old painting showing through because i thought it had a unique look to it.

haha, i guess that makes sense about the background, i didnt think of that! It looked to me like you were doing a girl on likea sailing ship or something with those lines behind her.

The arm looks pretty good in the first pic, but it looks like you accidentally enlarged it as you painted, or maybe the darker values just pop it out more..

But like Ive said before, i really like your style of painting, and other than those flaws, it looks good!

dragongx: yeah that is probably what happened to the arm. i tried cutting it down a little bit...its so easy in photoshop!! hah.

forearm and hand still just a tad too big and too thick.. try cutting down on the width.. make it more delicate..

Daarken-

Great work! The forearm and hand look fine to me. In fact, they're my *favorite* part of the picture. The slightly "massive" quality reminds me of the work of Max Beckmann or Picasso's "Large Bathers."

So, Daarken, my suggestion is to rework the head and torso so they're MORE like the arm, instead of bowing slavishly at the altar of the Skip Liepke Red-Nosed Woman. Show some balls.

Like I said, free advice.

giacomo: thanks. hah, i dont know why everyone hates red noses. i used to make them way more red...but coro was chagrined at my use of the typical "academy of art" red nose, so i pulled it back a lot and just left some red in the reflected lights. but thanks for the insight

mainloop: will do

I actually really liked how the image composited with the older one in landscape orientation, was interesting, nicely rendered form in the hand and forearm :)

groove: thanks! yeah, sorry i forgot about the underpainting part. but u can see parts of my underpainting in the first pic. its just a very very basic outline..nothing that special.

rohan: gahh! everyone always tells me to leave the old painting in, or leave my painting unfinished. haha, its kinda funny.

worked on it for a little bit this morning. now time for turkey >_< happy thanksgiving!

Very nice daarken. I followed your process the whole way through. Nice to see how it ended up. I know she has a big arm, but hey, som people just have big arms. I would have made it even bigger, and maybe paint it purple. (i dont know)

I also like the fact that we can see the previous painting below it.

Cool piece. (I'd crit color choices, and comp, but for one I'm lazy, and I dont paint yet, so I dont wont.)

does anyone else see the face in the background? facing her...directly in front of her face,,

if nobody else seems to see it i guess i will circle it or soemthing..

grinn: youll have to circle it, i have no idea what u are talking about

trying to decide if i want to refine the background more or not...

ooooh, that close up you have of the face is very nice... I love your brush work. You've definitely captured personality in it. I agree with the others that the arm still looks big, but you know that already. Definitely a drawing issue though, not a painting one.

Hi,

Very nice painting! nice colors

And i see what grinn means , hehe, the face is quite big and in a profile looking directly to her. Especially, the eye , is the most obvious. :) funny

hmm, I think it looks a bit like a skull. It shows just half itīs face right next to her face... hmm, gonna circle it when I come home (if I remember :P )

daarken--

this painting is fantastic, but i have a few question....

1. did you use reference/models?

2. what size is the painting?

3. is it oils or acrylic (you probably said i just didn't read
carefully)?

one other othing. i think that you should bring the back side of the face out f the shadow just a little bit to add dimension to the face (you may have actually done this and i just can't see it in the digi photos). other than that it is incredible and you have done an excellent job.

i don't think the arm looks too big by the way.

quantas: oops, i didnt see your reply. yeah i have one crappy dig reference photo i worked from. uh, the size is 31x48 and this is in oils...i never use acrylics, i cant use them. haha. yeah it might be easier to see the details in person on the shadow side...and i always tend to make the shadows too dark. damn

well i showed my teacher and then reworked it this morning. made the background darker, softened her eyebrows, reworked her whole face, trimmed down the arm and took some of the red out of her hand.

its come a long way.. really nice work on the dress.. that little square of pinkish reflected light on her left (our right) eyebrow is much too strong.. other than that, good work.. i stil think the arm is too large, but cant really do anything about it
