Wow, these are great! I don' t know how I've missed this thread for so long. Your creatures are fab-o-lous, and I really like some of those figure sketches from the previous dump, ESPECIALLY the robot helping the emaciated woman into her robes, and simple sketch of the seated fat lady. It seems to be a pretty rich world you're creating. As for the guy on the leash with the aliens...very X-files! :D

Moby?
In all seriousness, a great SP. Excellent likeness. Is the mouth too far down (from the nose)? I get the feeling it is, but I could be wrong. The use of strokes and color is Bold and Daring. You could handle a bag of Doritos just fine.

the new SP is really good. I must be looking at it after you made corrections, I don't see any proportional problems. The brush strokes are great, nice and chunky and follow the forms. The color variations within the skin tones are also good; that's something I've been lacking in my work.

are so alive good balance
between straight and curve
line lots of freedom of line
your family portraits

and the way you describe
the shape and "likeness" wich
i cannot compare are awesome

jetpack42: I guess he doesn't have super-villian proportions, huh?
bwkeough: Since the design of that pteranodon guy doesn't seem to be much more than an anthropomorphic dinosaur, I'll probably leave it alone. If I happen to think of something that makes him feel less like a dinosaur, maybe I'll play with it some more. Thanks!

I'm loving those ink paintings of the samurai. Besides these images looking great, samurai learned ink painting to build their focus....I gotta get me a sumi pen so I can go bushido on my sketchbook!
deschamps
July 18th, 2004, 09:57 AM
bwkeough, Groover McNab, flex mathews: I like how using ink forces me to think about what I want to draw before I put a pen or brush to the paper. Otherwise I just start scribbling with my pencil til I come up with an idea (or not). Which is good to do sometimes but most of the time I think I am just being lazy. I think pen and ink is helping me overcome that laziness... not there yet though!!!
imglue: Thanks man, i am trying to do less of it these days in order to become more descisive and confident. Traditional stuff is so much less forgiving.

some earlier pages that I didn't comment on: the centipede with fins and tentacle mandibles is awesome, and I absolutley love that quick ink drawing of your sketchbook while you draw in the windowseat of a plane!

ts been forever since I've been to your thread! You are...a genius! That last dump especially had some great contents...the first image on the brown toned paper is incredibly haunting, your creatures are beautifully dynamic and really have a sense of life to them, your SP's are sharp, figures are lovely and intelligently rendered, and your digi-paints flat out rock. My only critique, and it is a small and humble one, is that sometimes your ink (or brush marker, its hard to tell) paintings lose their lighter highlight areas, so they look dark and shadowed. Maybe have a cup of water nearby and water your brush down a little for the light areas, or go over in white conte when the ink is dry. The simple line inks are my favorites, especialy that baby. Beautiful!
Moral of the story...I fuckin' worship you man! And your frequent postage sends my heart all a-flutter. Keep it up!

dude, great creatures! no crits on those guys, you're doing really good work there.
I like the painting and colors in the FF card illustrations, but where's the feet? you're making that poor girl stump around on her ankle bones and I don't think a hoofless horse would be able to run very quickly. :) I'm just teasing. my guess is that it's tough to fit all of the information the AD wants into their image size requirements, otherwise, it would be a snap to add some more canvas to the bottom.

guggenmaneuver: Thanks!! I have been working on tracing paper a lot lately but none of these used tracing paper! On the last post, I initially used a light blue colored pencil the rough it out, then finished it with a 3B pencil. Once I scanned it in, I turned the drawing to grayscale which left some light tracing paper like lines from those initial blue lines.

hey how long did those paintings take? pretty quality
I like your Self portrait is it in oils?
I think the tiger dude with a skin on him, his colours are too blunt as if there were no dominant warm or cool light source. I would play with that to make it even better. I really like the last one you did. Your WOTC stuff is really quality why didnt you post it in the finished section!!

MIKECORRIERO: I was thinking a Were-Beaver with a tool belt and ripped flanel shirt. :)
The witch/troll one is too busy. I wanted to get rid of the horse from the desription and just focus on the action in the scene. Didn't happen. Why would her horse be in the living room anyway... and a flaming horse at that!
hurricane: thanks hurricane!
endregan:How long? 5-8 hours for one... depending on which one it was I'd guess. Yeah the portrait is in it's beginning stages in Oils. I'll get back to it tonight. You are right about the skin vs. the character. There was too much contrast. These won't be in my portfolio so I'll leave them as is, but I really appreciate the crit, thank you.
AndrewLey: Thanks so much Andrew. Narrative is my favorite part, so I am very happy that you feel it shows through.
Maybe I'll consider so more Thundercats :)

I was wondering so many artist do self portraits? The only reason I can think of it cos it's free, easy accessible reference. Is there more to it that I'm missing.

narrrative and eye movement is pretty good and you have what looks like someone spying on them from the left side of the image, but I think the kids are too evenly sized and clumped in the middle of the composition. one of the kids could be seated closer to us on the tracks in the lower left looking at something over the viewer's shoulder which might help bring you into the picture even more.
what kind of terrain is this set in? the current issue of Nat. Geo. has a bunch of good grand canyon photos, so I'm applying that red sandstone color in my head. :)

I said previously that I was curious at the idea you push your pic further and... you do it !:bashful: Great improvement, here. I like the second one for the dynamism but I think the character is too important and "hide" a bit the whole scene. The first one is great, simply great cuz the composition seems more equilibrated between characters and environement... wich I like a lot ! Please, Deschamps ! More !

good updates! I like the twist of train rail coming over the head of the viewer, creates a nice eerie voyeurism. there's also better interaction among the characters and a good sense of urgency. but I think the beastie could be a little more dynamic -- if you shift his weight to his right leg he'll be ready to move and you'll also get rid of that tangent with the heroe's elbow.
deschamps
January 4th, 2006, 10:48 PM
bwkeough: I got rid of the tangent... but I have done much to make him more dynamic yet. Thanks!
timpaatkins: Thanks! I skipped the pencil stage on this one for some reason... decided to rough it out digitally. I think I prefer digital right now but only because it is what I more comfortable with. I hope to change that.
fooxoo: Thank you. Color?.. As soon everything else is worked out.
A little farther along... I think I have the action of the scene decide on now, having added the bad guy at the end of the tracks.
