Has anybody read China Mieville (http://www.chinamieville.co.uk) ?
Perdidio Street Station was my favourite book for ages.
human body/scarab beetle head characters. huge lethal dream eating moths, vodyanoi that sculpt water and more.
Now I am 1/4 way into The Scar ... highly recommended ...

Thread Necromancy!
Was wondering if anyone else has read any of China Mieville's books?
I was considering getting them to add to my reading list. Any thoughts, comments etc?

I finished reading the scar today, and I read Perdido Street Station last year. They're very good, and Melville is a brilliant world-builder, but the conclusions are...odd. Not necessarily bad, especially as they are obviously meant to be that way, but many will find them unsatisfying.

I agree, I've found that with The Scar and with Iron Council, and some of his short stories. I mean I liked them and am about to read Perdido Street Station now, but he always seems to end the books very differently to what you would expect.

Perdido Street Station and The Scar are on my short list of favorite books ever written.
I really think they should be required reading for concept artists. The way he constructs the world is... impressionistic and concrete at the same time.
If you like him and want to try something else I would suggest Jeff Vandermeer's "City of Saints and Madmen" or Vandermeer's "Shriek". City of Saints and Madmen is a short story collection that contains 'The Transformation of Martin Lake' which is just about my favorite short story. Theres also a short story that in a circumspect way introduces that characters in "Shriek".

Yep, Mieville's books rank among my favourite. Enjoyed The Scar almost as much as Perdido Street Station (luv that Weaver!). Iron Council is excellent too although maybe not quite at the level of his others.
