View Full Version : When are you yankees going to start use the metric system?

Yeah, really. When?
The metric system is superior to your inches and feet and whatever!

So, why haven't you guys converted yet?

Not until we've crashed our 100th space mission due to errors in measurement. I'd like to know when we start teaching the lettered paper system with all paper in school.

Why should they? I use both for measuring length and weighing in cooking - sometimes at the same time. My brain can cope, can't yours? even the EU has stopped jumping up and down about it.

Says the person who is probably surrounded by Roman Imperial architecture, uses a mostly Roman alphabet, and probably lives in a Romanesque government system. We all come from somewhere, even the Brits.

If i ever see US switch to metric it'll be too soon.

Everyone may make mistakes on conversion, especially when dealing with novelty situations. And it's particulary not fun when it happens where the outcome may be very very painful (Gimli Glider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimli_Glider), anyone?).

SI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Si_system) is ment to be just that - international.

Imperial is just that - a measurement system that should've been dead long ago.

Bah, why should we? When we want to complain about it being hot out, saying "It's like 100 degrees out!" sounds way hotter than, "Dude it's like 38 degrees outside!"

And when it's cold? Saying it's "Below zero" in Fahrenheit is way colder sounding than in Celsius.

It's about relativity...

...And novelty.

Length units is not the same as heat measuring scales.

You should change because no one knows what 3⅔ inches are.

Huh? Celsius is considered metric, last I checked.

3 and two-thirds inches is about the length of my middle finger. ;P

Don't be ridiculous, iolarnula. There is no centralized governing body on English spelling like there is in Spanish, French, or Italian. (to name a few) Noah Webster was one of the only spelling reformers that was met with a moderate amount of success. Even then, there really is no "correct" way to spell anything in English.

If you want to get technical, then the Webster standard of spelling is probably the most commonly used amongst English-writing people across the world. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's right, though.

English is an awesome language that people give too little credit for. It's very flexible and amazing things can be done with it. I wouldn't change a damn thing about it.

Especially it's crappy spelling system.

I remember seeing an article somewhere once in which a Dallas weather station got hate mail for using the fahrenheit system. I don't have it on me, so you'll have to look it up.

Yeah, that's why we don't have the metric system. I would love to be able to use it, but way too many people would be like "ZOMG WE MIGHT AS WELL SPEAKIN THAT IMMIGRANT SPANISH".

its more precise in metric... roads in usa says 60 mph, and if you converto those to kilometers per hour they're 96kmh, but in countries where is used the metric system, roads says 100 kmh ..
And also goes for my stature, I cant say 174,55 centímetres in inches... 5'6''?¿¿?¿? wtf¿ xD

I have a Canadian friend whose father bought a Cadillac, and subsequently had to sell it because it had a digital speedometer that only displayed speed in mph.

But in metric that would make your penis 8,8 centimeters - see sounds much better already - spread the word on this, it might make them change over sooner.
Read an article on how they tried to implement it in the US but the people couldn't get a grip on it. Counting in tens is hard you know...

I hated fractions with a passion when i was in school. So having a system where i can go from nanometers to kilometers simply by moving the comma a few spaces suits me perfectly. Also its quite convenient to switch to volume, since 1 cubic decimeter is 1 liter.

speaking of nanometers, with one inch being the smallest unit, how does the imperial system display that sort of measurements? 1/34567890323565 of an inch? A quick google search gave me this: 1 nanometer = 3.93700787 × 10-8 inches. Hardly practical, i'm not even sure i understand that number. :P ;)

What a lot of non "yanks" don't seem to realize is that in scientific settings (like where you need to accurately express the size of a nanometer) the metric system IS the defacto standard in the US. Furthermore, when you get to sizes below an inch the next smallest unit is a centimeter even in common usage.

20 x 34
5 miles in kilometers
10 / 8
1 ounce in dl

etc etc

Cause we Americans are sensitive about our identity and anything seen to challenge that identity (even when the thing in question is originally from somewhere else...like pretty much everything) or tradition is seen as "challenging the American way of life" Even when it's something as stupid as our ass backwards measuring system. Some places renamed French Fries, freedom fries just because the French wouldn't invade Iraq illegally with us! If the government decided tomorrow that it was switching to metric the cry would go out across the land and rednecks across the country would be blowing up the phone lines of right wing talk idiots to go on about how liberals are destroying America one piece at a time and how they just gave away a bit of American tradition to the Euro's. The conspiracy folks would point to it as yet another creep toward the inexorable transformation into a one world government. Some one would declare it unpatriotic to use anything but feet and inches, bumper stickers would abound with such witticisms as "Don't Tread on My Feet!" and "Give 'em an Inch and they'll take your freedom!"

I’m British and think that Imperial measurements are friendlier – they were based on everyday objects. The metric system was invented by the French (who the British have hated for centuries) and is based on a fallacy. A cubic metre of pure water was supposed to equal 1 metric ton, but they didn’t factor in air pressure. The rest of it similar – go google. Sure it’s great for micro-measurements, but we don’t have to be so exact in everyday life. ‘He was 1m 82cm tall’ does not sound as great as ‘He was 6 foot.’

Diphallia
November 25th, 2008, 04:00 PM

It kind of sucks to use a 12 base system with out 10 base digit system cuz you end up with a lot of fractions. 12 is great because you can divide it evenly into halves, thirds, quarters, sixths, but a binary system probably has an edge.

There's always Octomatics (http://www.octomatics.org/), an 8 base system with some interesting features, since it's binary and kinda sponsored by the laws of the universe. 8 is also easier to see in your mind. Well, I can't imagine more than 4, but I can imagine 2 groups of 4's. 5 is already getting me confused. Same with this guy:
