glad to see you haven't gone the way of the buffalo (iffy). these are some really excellent studies man!! you have wicked skills with the pen, the fact that it's ball point makes it that much more.

really smooth for ball point.. thats awesome.. good studies.. reminds me of john vanderpoel..

thanks everyone:D
capt harlock- yeah, i've been around, i just don't have too much stuff i wanna post, but someone at school said i should post these, so i did.
ant4d-Thanks, yeah i don't really like graphite, so i stick with pen, plus using a pen makes you be more carefull about what you put down. Alot of the skeletal stuff is from a anatomy book, and i wanted to do those sketches really academically.
main loop-thanks, I just filted through the vanderpoel for about the fourth time or so, making notes for myself and just doing a couple of the drawings. I also wanted to see if i could get the same sensitivity that he was getting in charcoal with a pen.

these are fantastic. you have great sensitivity with the ballpoint, i dont htink ive seen anything so finely rendered from ballpoint before. i started drawing in ballpoint exlusivley quite recently and seeing these makes me very happy indeed. i wonder how many more times i can say "ballpoint" in the rest of this post.
...
once, apparently.
oh yeah, i hate to ask this in this thread, but do you have any tips you could give me for ballpoint rendering? (ok, twice)

So ball-point pen eh tiny? These look like a buncha' rend rin's to me. I mean, whose ever heard of drawling with ball-point pen? What are all those little writin's for? Can't you remember what the different bones of the feet are? You should really commit them to memory.
By the way, my kid brother say's you're all wash.

November 23rd, 2003, 10:47 AM
nil-yeah sure no problem. I'll do a little demo on how i use the pen if you want. But mainly, with ballpoint, its staying light and slowly building up your darks. I actually use my finger alot to soften edges and blend lines together to get flat tones. There will always been line still, but thats just the nature of the tool. And because you can't erase you have to be more carefull about what you put down. Don't commit until you absolutely have to.
yellow- um, yeah. half the time i'm doped up on drugs and cheap liquor. I can barely remember my name sometimes. So i right...er... write crap down. oh, and your kid brother is absolutely right.

i gots to get me one of those zebra pens...,and draw more..
hands how bout some hi res shots of those so everyone can see your pretty renderings up close...they lose some of their charm when you can't see how those edges and cores were built up with slight hatching,

i'll try and do a quick little demo and post it, so people can see how i'm doing this, and how i build up edges and soften and stuff. Maybe when i get back from class today.

These are great! When I saw they were done with a pen I was blown away. The range of tones achieved is larger than I've probably ever seen with a pen. I'd love to see some of your work in higher res.

Thanks everyone for the compliments. I did a quick little tutorial on how i'm using my pen and how i get edges and stuff. Its nothing great, but maybe someone will get some use out of it. I'm just waiting to get the links from my friend, as he is hosting the images.

Okay, i have a short and crude tutorial on how i'm using a ball-point pen. First page is mainly how i shade and stuff and how i'm building edges
first
http://www.cartoonplatoon.org/mark/pentutorial.jpg
hopefully this makes some sense, and you can read the words on there.
Basically its lots of fine lines, and hand sensitivity.
next
http://www.cartoonplatoon.org/mark/headtut.jpg
This is pretty crude, but hopefully the point will get across. Stay light
and work you way up. The edges that you know need to be softened,
soften them right away, cause the ink dries fast. These are by no means,
good drawings, but hopefully the process is getting conveyed.
And lastly, for those of you who wanted bigger images, here ya go
http://www.cartoonplatoon.org/mark/bigeye.jpg

Hope this helps. Ultimately, nothing beats mileage, and learning what your tools can do. But regardless of medium, it will always come back to knowledge. And by developing our dexterity with our hand, and learning to see with our eyes better, we can all start to make better pictures.

Well then, thats quite large. sorry bout that. well at least the words will be legible?:D
oh, and on the head steps page, its an old guy, and he has a beard, i just didn't draw it. I did all the crap in like 20 minutes over the phone, so quality may have suffered.

Very, very cool stuff there man. Really inspiring to see how much you can do with a pen, wow, just wow. And by the way, what brand of pen do you use (I don't think you've already said, but maybe I'm wrong)? Great stuff, can't wait for more.
...Yes, that's a really stinkin' big tutorial. :)

by george, these are huge!!! hmm, I cant see them too well.. Cant wait to get home from work so I can resize them...
tinyhands
November 24th, 2003, 12:49 PM
yeah, sorry bout that everyone. I'll see if i can get my friend whos hosting these to resize them.
Silvir- I'm using a Zebra F-402. This is positively the best ball-point i've ever used. It makes all the difference in getting really fine lines. I was using a cheap ol bic pen for the longest time, but my teacher got me these, cause thats what he was using, and they've really helped alot. The pen does matter.

Have you ever tried smudge sticks with pen?
tinyhands
November 24th, 2003, 01:08 PM
No I haven't. I haven't use them for anything. They could probably get some cool effects. I think fingers work just fine too. Speaking for myself though, i don't like to carry alot of stuff with me, odds are i lose it. So i just have my pen and sketchbook and thats all.
OH, I FORGET SOMETHING!!!!
When your drawing with pen, always have something to clean the tip with! As you draw the tip will pick up the fibers in the paper, and when they get stuck on the tip they can create little black spots on your paper, and more likely, your drawing. So always have a napkin, or paper towel, or clothes?:D to wipe your tip off.

Your doing tutorials now are you? Why am I doing them all at the school? You are hired. Get to work now...
Oh, and ummm, you gave away the secret of pen sketching,....the name of the pen....ang you.....heh

Thanks. :) Turns out my family had a few floating around the house, so I snatched one. :) They're great pens, but I can't seem to smear them. :/ Any tips?

November 24th, 2003, 04:51 PM
wow, thanks a bunch tinyhands. your huge images crashed my browser but it was worth it ;)
oh, as far as smudging is concerned, i dont know if you check out the daily sketchbooks subforum, but in there, rubygenesis does a bit of pen sketchin and she used rubbing alcohol to get some cool effects. perhaps in combination with a smudgestick this could offer interesting results. *runs off to by rubbing alcohol*
unfortunately i dont think i can get the zebra pens over here so im probably stuck with nasty ol' Bic ones for the time being. anyway thanks again, very inspiring.

You can use alcohol in a airbrush to do some neat things with some ball point pens.
Just keep it away from fire. Atomized alcohol + fire = wrecked art.

November 24th, 2003, 05:24 PM
spit works just fine...sorry to be so crude. Water, coffee, sweat from your softdrink, pen is not water permanent, so anything will bleed it. Be careful though, you might eat blue ...
Amish Rake Fight Man
November 24th, 2003, 05:27 PM
Ah but it sounds cooler to use bacardi 151 to bleed your art...

Thanks again everyone for the compliments
Fred-umm...well, its just crap i put together real quick. I can't do tutorials to your level. I don't know enough. But its fun to try and impart what little i know.:D ahh, and the secret is out. Damn. This is just like watergate......
silvir- This may sound really stupid, but i find the smearing with my ring finger smears better than with my other fingers. ??? I don't know why, but it does. Its more important to remember to always go with the form, regardless of hatching/smearing etc.
Yeah, and i haven't tried spit, or anything else. I don't think i'd be careful enough with alcohol or other substances. I dunno....

Got older an your hands didn't? Man, my kid brother has bigger hands than you do. The guy is a T-Rex.
See, you might have released the name of the pen, but you forgot to mention the only place where its easy to find is........
and its $5.98.

maybe sometime down road. Probably more sketchbook stuff. I don't have a camera to shoot life drawings, but i will soon. If you want, you can check out my old painting from the masters thread, to see some of my other studies.

Tinyhands can you post large versions of the pages you posted with cloth studies?
thx

November 26th, 2003, 04:37 PM
Grooveholmes- sure, give me a couple days and i'll try and post bigger images of the older ones, plus maybe some new drapery stuff too. Got to get drawing!! My sketchbook has been neglected since i've been working on a little painting.

hey these are wicked! yeah itd becool if you could scale down those huge drawings, but they are good fairly large, just cant see them.
These are awesome. ill have to get me a ballpoint!! :)
OH and how do you shade so well. lighter to darker, working around the forms? the cross hatching confuses me as when i do it, it looks awful pretty much :)
thanks!
Main Loop
November 26th, 2003, 09:16 PM
zebra ballpoints huh? ill keep an eye out for those.. it almost gives you the feel of prismacolor pencils without all the sharpening.. by the way have you ever tried combining this with pencil? smudging the graphite will get you even more subtle effects, And you can erase it..
tinyhands
November 26th, 2003, 10:17 PM
endregan- basically how the cross hatching works is that everything has to go with the forms. Its best to start learning that with simple shapes, and then work your way up to more complicated things. Also look at inkers and the way the do it. They are working only with line, so everything has go with the forms so it will read properly. And yeah always work light to dark, unless your confident with moving straight to black. But if you mess up, it aint comin' out. Staying light is a safer bet.
Mainloop- yeah, i haven't tried that. Truthfully, i just don't like graphite all that much. I'd take charcoal over it any day. But thats just me. Drawing in pen is like drawing in graphite. Lots of layering for certain effects. And you don't have to sharpen pens:D
Main Loop
November 27th, 2003, 12:57 AM
yeah.. ive never tried combining prismacolors and ballpoint.. they're not really graphite, i dunno what they are, but it might be interesting to try a black prismacolor with em
