Been working on this one for a few days. Dealing with the background's been a pain. I wanted to close the circle of guys surrounding them, but every attempt looked awful.

Your ambition and image ideas are working out nicely. You're trying to tackle more complicated images rather than having the guy standing like a log syndrome and that's to be applauded.

I think you could work on your anatomy (as often as it's said, it's true). You've got some really awkward figures in there. Shoot some refs and paint with those.... just really quick ones... it helps so much.

Sidharth Chaturvedi
December 8th, 2008, 05:27 AM
Quigleyer: Thanks! I'll work harder on the anatomy especially, still trying to nail that.

Here's a quick character sheet that my brother asked for. I'm still having a bit of trouble getting materials right.

Cityscape, concept is for a scene just outside the capital city of an empire.

December 15th, 2008, 05:27 AM
I really like the look of the Empire cityscape. I really hope you keep it up and expand on the the concept. I think the gentleman holding his eye open on the top is really well done it conveys emotion with little action very well. Good stuff so far I really hope you keep it up :)

you've got some good things going with your digital skill but I'll agree with the above statement that your anatomy etc needs more attention. It looks like you just need to be more patient with your line art, which many of us are guilty of.

keep it up!

Character concept for an emperor. Same guy as the statue in the city piece farther up. I need to do more drapery studies, I know...

Decided to do my own take on the Hindu God, Shiva. Realized way too late that his torso is turned in a completely weird direction if he's walking towards us. This is why I need to flip the image early instead of at the end.

Hey Chagan, youve got some nice stuff here. You seem to have a good amount of ability with whatever program you are using. However, your proportions seem to be off on most of your drawings. my suggestion would be to do some studies so you can really nail your proportions.

Still your work is good. Keep it up! :)

lord_regenschirm
December 18th, 2008, 07:28 AM
I'm with Newman in terms of proportion, in addition I would recommend to watch your contrast-values (one thing I'm also handling too cautiously); go for darker darks and lighter lights :^^: and when you do so, fix your lightsource in the beginning. Cool moods though, keep it up!

Newman and regenschirm, thanks for the comments! Still working on anatomy and proportion, got my big book of Bridgman handy :D. I'll keep the value advice in mind.

hey dude , i can see progress in your sketchbook, good stuff, but just be careful with ur anatomy. it seems to be a major problem for you now , if you can tackle that down, it be aesthetically more pleasing for your pieces,

Concept art for a Neverwinter Nights 2 module my brother's working on. First the study then the actual painting. The final is an edit of the same piece in my last post- I've done some work on the kneeling guy's anatomy, especially on the back, and warmed the color palette on him to make him fit better into the setting.

Edit: Added some more light to the guy's back based on Man Made God's tip, thanks!

Man Made God
December 31st, 2008, 07:17 AM
Nice, loads of cool ideas here. Your pencils and digitals seem pretty balanced quality wise, looking good. The anatomy is noticeably off on some of the older stuff, looks like you didn't have references, but your finished paintings are all pretty solid. The new one is looking nice and dramatic, but I think the skin may be too purple-ish, I'm not sure. It really depends on how blue your sky or secondary light source is going to be. The guy's back shouldn't be so dark though, there are flames right next to it.

Kinda rambled, but yeah, keep it up. Looking really good so far!

I have begun drawing from Loomis! Pardons for the feathery lines.. still trying to work on that long, confident stroke thing, especially with the wacom. Really need to put in that felt tip on the pen.

I'm not quite sure who to assign the copyright on sketchbook images like these to, would it go to me or Loomis?

Thanks for dropping by my SB dude! Keep going on those Loomis studies. Look into Bridgman as well. Another book that I am drawing from right now is one by a guy named Fritz Schider. It's an anatomy book and it's super thorough. I'm learning a shitload from it.

I really like the subject material that you're fleshing out here, but like others have mentioned before, crank out a ton of those anatomy studies (something I'm doing myself). Also, do life drawings regularly. Right now I'm averaging twice a week. Hopefully soon it'll be three times a week.

Anyways, keep rocking the artwork dude! You definitely made the right decision to pursue art for the rest of your life!

Sidharth Chaturvedi
January 2nd, 2009, 04:08 PM
Thanks Peetaer! Definitely keeping up the Loomis/Bridgman, and I'll look into Schider. I'm also learning a lot from the Ron Lemen tutorials I see all over the place, he explains things very clearly. As for life drawing, I'm starting school again later this month and will be life drawing at least twice a week. Can't wait to get back to it, that's probably what i miss most from my undergrad years!

Anyways, kicking off the year with some silhouettes! These are fun.

January 7th, 2009, 09:03 PM
Your silhouettes are really wicked. I hope to see some more of those. One thing that might help in your most recent character portrait would be to review the angle of the left shoulder. Along with the position of that head, that shoulder is not working at all. A more established light source could help too... right now light apears to be coming from many directions at once.

charcoal studies looking good. The perspective drawing has a lot of work put into it, but it looks like you've got multiple vanishing points with no measure points to figure out the depth of things. The doors look about 20 feet wide, same with windows, and truck is 100 feet long, etc.

Thanks for the feedback, I see what you mean about the measure points- I'll pay attention to that next time. I've only got 1 vanishing point in there though, and a minor one for the uphill part of the road. The rest were all for the light source and base points for shadows.

First thanks for my comment in SB.

Second, WOW your faces are increeedible :) Rate up here dude, I think you're gonna be completely awesome. There are some nice ideas in your digitals, you're deffo going in the right direction, but I think your charcoal stuff is out ahead at the moment. Jake: Hehe, took me a while to get that- I haven't actually heard much Floyd :P. *ducks thrown objects*

Anywho, here's a new self portrait. The eyes were a pain in the ass and by themselves added 2 or 3 hours to what should have been a relatively quick study.

amianna
March 21st, 2009, 05:45 PM
Wow, that is a great self portrait, I'm going to aim for that quality of work with my next one. I'm glad you spent the extra time on the eyes because thats what makes this piece special. Great job.

I'm still learning how to do tones right and you already got it really well. I love the aging SP as well. I have to try that too, my only crits would be that when you age the nose should get a bit bigger and the lips will loose most of the fullness, and making the cheekbones show more as well. Other than that , great sketchbook , I'll be watching since you do a lot of work with charcoal too where Ive only just begun working with.

March 21st, 2009, 05:46 PM

Hi there...your work show a high rate of improvement, I can see volumes/poses/line quality getting stronger.
You're doing pretty well with traditional mediums...not so much with your digitals but I think if you keep studying like this it's just a matter of time before those skills translate into your digital projects as well.

Bharat, Mischeviouslittleelf, Anup1 and EKOes, thanks so much for the compliments!

Here are this week's pose and sketches from figure studio. I'm actually really happy with how this came out. I didn't have to spend as long constructing, and I took what I learned from the Prud'hon copy to design it a little, thought about the shapes more than the modeling. It still ended up a little more rendered than I wanted it to, but I guess I need to learn when to stop drawing.

Sidharth, good stuff here man, I sent you a mail from Glenn Loomis email account by accident when I was over in San Fran.

Really does seem like you're making a lot of progress.

May 7th, 2009, 11:38 PM
Thanks, Helioth! Sorry I missed you during your visit, maybe next time :).

Here's stuff from today's figure studio class. Also a new character sketch where I made the legs comically too small, but I was focusing on back anatomy anyway. I've been reading and copying from Hale's "Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters" and was trying to see how much I could do from imagination afterward.

Head drawing class work and illustration final project.

Edit: Updated the illustration piece, I wasn't happy with the color and wanted to eliminate the lines.
Also, YES! I have finally figured out how to stop the color from washing out when I upload these.

Entry for CHOW158. I mostly managed to draw what was in my head, save for things with the pose that I just couldn't get right. I really wanted to emphasize the hand clutching the chest, like he's got a weak heart from a long life, and wanted the gun to look heavy in his hand. Guess I need to get into the character more next time.

Fail. This just took too damn long because of the colors- I tried sticking to an earth palette but that went out the window after a while, so I've used some cadmiums as well. How did those old guys paint apples?? Some Chardin studies are in order! I'm also really not happy with the edges.

On the bright side, there was a glass of orange juice waiting for me at the end.

July 12th, 2009, 12:52 AM
Lovely studies...the drapery and skin tones are excellent. Great observations in the Starbucks study, too. The only crit the jumps out is edge control...using softer edges on the tables and chairs and the harder edges on the pick-up counter might make those parts of the image read a bit more clearly. Minor stuff, though. Your work ethic is inspiring. :)

Sketchbook pages, including copies of a Velazquez's "Mars" and a Greg Manchess character; a thumbnail and a sketch made for the current CHOW, Napoleonic War Hero; and today's alla prima portrait of my fiance, which took around 4 hours. Only used an earth palette.

Sidharth Chaturvedi
August 29th, 2009, 02:58 PM
Some progress shots of my CHOW painting- pencil drawing on 16X20 canvas board, digital color study, and a poor quality photo of the progress on the painting itself.

Following that, 3 color studies. The first one was at 3PM, the next one at 11AM. The third one is the same as the second, but overpainted one hour later at noon. Amazing how much the color changes in such a short amount of time.

I'm currently doing a copy of Velazquez's Juan de Pareja. There are some drawing problems already on the head, and on the whole it's a bit too dark. Will try to fix that stuff when I can get back to the studio. This is also the first time I'm using a lead white (Winsor & Newton Cren Mitz). Handles nicely, but I can't believe how much of that stuff you need to use to lighten the paint :P.

First drawing from figure studio. Technically a 2 week pose, but we only got to work on it for like 6 hours. I'm not happy with it. It looked a lot better before I dropped that cast shadow behind her.

Also, some progress on the Velazquez, it's very slowly starting to work, although I'm still seeing some drawing issues. I'm also trying to figure out how to get the saturation around the face up. This may call for some glazing.

My entry for Battle of the Sexes 2, based on the topic "Faded Beauty Still Shines." Digital piece done in grayscale and then colored in layers.

Homework for still life class, around 2 and a half hours in oil.

Classwork in still life class, 4-5 hours in oil.

Copy of one of the characters in Rubens' "Two Satyrs."

Wow the last portrait is just stunning.
and those copies of the Academie Julian plates really look like they
payed off on the portrait.
If i could say one thing the drapery really dosent really seem to get there for me.
It Looks like your faces get a great amount of attention to the small little subtle changes of value, hue, and saturation, but then the drapery really seems to get a little muddy and a flat middle tone. The 2 im seeing this the most in is the study of Juan de Pareja, and your battle of the sexes piece.

Umm btw Did the battle of the sexes thing start i haven't seen anything about it yet???

Thanks man! Nah, as far as I know he didn't use grissaille, but the class assignments calls for doing this the way Rembrandt would have. Helps me solve some drawing issues beforehand anyway, later on I'll be going over the head with an opaque color layer.

Here's a very bad photo of the progress on the latest painting, the digital study I did for it, and a photo of one corner of my messy studio at school.

That very last image makes all your hard work look so very impressive!

Thanks KonnA :).

We're FINALLY getting to add color to the Velazquez copy, so here's the progress on it. The grissaille is completely covered up and I'm enjoying working on it now :P.

I also scraped off whatever I'd done on the girl in my umbrella painting yesterday and redid it, so here's a shot.

Lakka - Thanks!
Bambur - Glad you like it! Hopefully it'll be done some time soon.

Here's today's still life. I'm reworking one of my digital pieces from March after a critique by Jason Manley and John English, so I should have that done soon. I'm reworking the two figures in it mainly, here's the outline. I still need to work on the girl. Also, I'll have sketchbook photos soon, promise!

I haven't even doodled anything for 3 days. Been down with the worst fever since I was maybe 14 years old and already missed a figure drawing class. Got a lot of catching up to do. Keeping myself occupied with Donato's awesome download though :).

Anyway, here's the portrait from Wednesday. I've kept the paint as thin as I could manage, so a lot of the panel is showing through. We'll be doing a color pass of the same pose next week.

Thanks andres :).

Blaugh, still sick. Fever's stopped, now I can't breathe. Anyway, it's Nov 1st, so here's my self-portrait! I may revisit this one to blend a bit more, clean it up, etc, as it stands there's around 3-4 hours of work in it. Built it up very slowly and tried not to hit the features too fast. I really like how I'm starting to treat my digital work like oils.

Continuation of last week's pose in portrait class, added color today. Also some more progress on the Velazquez copy- I've finally gotten the skin color down to its real, grayish tone, it's been too red until now. The third one's a charcoal copy after Rubens, just started it this week. And finally, the oh-so-slow progress on the catacombs image. Redoing those poses has been a pretty aggravating process, although I think I've got what I want now.
