Hello everyone!

I'm a Design Student from Massey University in Wellington. I will basically be posting anatomy studies and hopefully other random sketches.

I'm trying to improve, so feel free to offer advice and critiques! There's allot of awesome artists around here and it would be a pleasure to learn from you all.

Loomis head studies. I find planes really hard, as well as keeping a consistent line.

^^^ Yeesh that girls face looks scarier every time I look at it.

I'm finding it hard to construct with straight lines, keep working at it.

Welcome to conceptart.org i'm not awesome artist but i'll give some thoughts of mine. Skulls are a bit disproportional and jaw needs to be lowered a bit, upper end of the jaw is not in the middle of the sphere as you draw. Sorry i cant explain in english but there's a lot pictures of skulls on the net they are great reference. Found once bunch of pics from all possible angles.

Thanks! Yeah fully see what you mean about the jaw how its not alligned in the center. I also find myself cramming the space between the nose and the chin also. Eye sockets are often too narrow as well (horizontally).

Thanks for the advice.

Here some of the stuff I did for our Digital Illustration paper last semester. An environment design for the movie 1984, a self portrait (where the anatomy is way off lol) and a character design page and illustration for a short story called the Tinderbox.

Tried creating some poses myself, as well as an observation.

Just started on the attachment of muscles to the figure, but I will make sure to keep revisiting the simple mannikin.

Ugh. Slow start today. Pulling off the symmetry of a mannikin gets harder as you progress with detail. Guess I need to keep looking at the whole figure as I draw to make sure the angles are concistent.

It is HARD unlearning dodgy pencil strokes. Feel like I'm learning though so its all good.

o hi
mann did stefan really show my comic, that seemed like such a long time ago. You guys probably did a better job. When i did the paper it was only the second time they actually taught it, it was pretty unorganized.

I think your studies of the body in movement are quite nice.

hmm i look at your digital paintings, i'd say that maybe rather than try get in as much detail i'd focus on simplifying the planes, to get the feeling of depth/distance. atmospheric perspective! which mike (illustration tutor) seemed to drill into my head.
(like on the wallls its very sketchy/scribbly)

but nice to see another massey person haha

keep up it up :)

Thanks Jeff!

Yeah had ol' Mike for Illustration 1 earlier this year. I remember he loved to emphasize the word 'drama' alot. But yeah, he was good.

Next time I do a some digital painting I think I'm going to work in grayscale so I can get better at values.

hey man think i was in your type 1 class at massey this year?
some nice studies remember to take your time and think that everyline has a purpose. Keep up the good work if you have time cruise past my book.

No real light source, the eyes are off and the chins a little small. Overall I'm quite happy though. About 3 hours last night. From a photo.

I feel like I'm starting to get my head around planes more. I've noticed I have issues though when I try to draw the head from a top down of below looking up sort of perspective. I think it's because I don't understand the planes yet.

Just trying to progress through the Loomis Head and Body books at the mo. Need to do something creative soon though.

I'm staying at my parents at the mo for part of the summer break. Totally broke so I figured I would try paint them something for Christmas. Their house is by a stream with an awesome amount of ducks and other random animals that seem to like it there. Just starting to think of ideas.

Im enjoying painting in grayscale. Learning values.

Hi, lots of your pencil works are skewed a little bit. I think it maybe bad angle of drawing or smth. But you should try to do it without skewing, cause it may be a very painful thing to refuse later.
So keep showing your progress!

Hey Mr Juicy. Sounds good, but sorry, what exactly is skewing?

Yar I think I see what you mean... I do have issues getting the angle right, especially with the head construction... and just looking back the bodys as well. Thanks man!

Couple of head studies and a shoddy body perspective page. Will get back into figure studies tomorrow, focus less on the head for a bit.

Hey your sketchbook shows a great deal of progress. Your anatomy issues are slowly working themselves out, and it's awesome to see. Just keep on breaking the human form down to it's basics as you're doing now, so much can be learned that way. Keep up the good work!

Really hit a brick wall today with the body studies. Struggling to construct a body that seems to fit together. Also perspective bothers me. Anyways, will keep at it tomorrow.

Figuring out the values for an environment. As always, crits of help would be appreciated!

Been doing Bridgman studies lately. I think it was the right choice to switch from Loomis to Brigman, more emphasis on understanding form. Here are some of the studies and a sketch I did today.

really nice progress the problems at the start of the thread are beginning to iron themselves out! Bridgman studies are looking nice definate improvement in line quality! the face in the rogue bowman is still slightly skewed tho.
