the colors didn´t come out to well on this one
Enydimon
November 23rd, 2008, 03:30 PM
I think you're muting the colours too much where it becomes muddy and less vibrant. Saturate your colours a little more.
DK_sketch
November 24th, 2008, 12:24 PM
Thanks Enydimon I tried to saturate the girl with the cat and it came out looking a lot better also added a mood background:D

I dunno if that you style or not, but you need to work on the face a lil more, You prolly know how it should go but its not there yet and good going with the colors...

Nice Geisha, The grey and red is a real emotion amplifier.
Had a dream once of a Geisha visiting a grave to put a lotus or an orchid flower on it.
I was trespassing on sacred ground and had too keep a distance.
The concept went all exaggerated in my mind ever since.
The element of beuty and sadness together just blows my mind into pieces every time..
The idea of having lived a life entertaining someone and ended up loving someone dearly as a servant and how lost that servent is when her master has died, so she ends up serving his momory with the same beuty as before.. Rips me apart.. And the red, being ambiguous between blood(Death) and Beuty with a dash of sacredness(White).
Ever listen to some Vanessa Mae? There is a song of hers that hits that button so hard it makes everything tremor.
Maybe one day I will be able to communicate stuff with that impact.

more more MOOOOORE :P
Samuel Gray
May 10th, 2009, 10:05 PM
Nice progress so far DK. One thing that stands out the most is having the stylized eyes. If you look at all of the portraits they seem to have all similar eyes. It seems like you are drawing more lemon shapes than actually putting the eye in the eye socket. Get what I am saying? Keep working hard
DK_sketch
May 10th, 2009, 10:40 PM
Thanks a lot Samuel. It was kinda fun I was just starting on practicing eyes cause i thought the eyes i have been doing today looked a bit off, ah well just gotta keep at it :P
DK_sketch

DK_sketch
May 19th, 2009, 04:05 AM
and one more study. there is a nice big seam on the right side of the pic, the scanner couldn't take an A3 in one go :(
tomjones
May 19th, 2009, 04:16 AM
Good work on the studies. The most recent eye drawings are the best so far I think, partly because the highlights are helping to make look more spherical. Maybe try giving some identity to some of the eyes now - bigger eye lashes, darker iris, etc?
I really like the small sketch of a woman in your last drawing as well :)
Keep it up!
DK_sketch
May 19th, 2009, 04:53 AM
Thanks a lot tomjones, I was really hoping to get some crit soon wasn't sure if I should drop the eyes and start on something else:(.
Alright some eyes with a personality coming up.
btw the scanner totally fucks up the shading ill be buying a new one soon:)

I have a question.
When something don't look right do you, go find out what it really looks like so you can draw it, or do you quit and start something else?
DK_sketch
March 15th, 2010, 10:57 PM
Oops sorry i forgot to respond last time :( sorry about that
@mike butkus: Thanks a lot and i will :)
@Benjy: Thanks glad you like it :) I tried fooling around with the brush settings on that one.
@alexson: Hehe yep im back and and going strong.
No i just shaved it off was hard to do the selfportrait´s with that thing:P
@AChipps: interesting quistion. I generally attempt to get it to look as close as possible to the image or still life, but i usually fiddle around with the saturation to get to look a bit more interesting, espicially on the 10 min studies.
I never just quit i may admit that it was premature for me to do a study and decide to do something related but not as difficult:).
Hope this answers youre quistion.

Fede studies, dude (excuse mit halvt english halvt danish)!

April 3rd, 2010, 07:49 PM
Those are some really impressive studies, especially your line work. Very crisp and clean, and you handle faces exceptionally well. I really like how you handle your shading as well.
Nice speedpaintings too, very loose brushwork which I dig. As for critiques, I'd say be a bit more careful on nailing the shapes for your speedpaintings at an early stage, then work on the values/colors later on - I think that will make it a bit easier to render.
Other than that, you're doing great with these studies.

April 4th, 2010, 03:31 PM
Great studies, the top eye is very pretty. I like the lord of the rings paintings.

First up, thanks for posting in my sketchbook! :D
aaaw man...those are some great color studies, mate :D I think I'm gonna do some color studies digitally as well. The way you nail them is just so much fun to see.
Just a piece of advice; Try to work on a piece for at least 4 hours for some variety. You do a lot of quick studies, but finish one piece up. You'll see how much you've learned and you'll take the time to polish everything up ;)
oren90
April 23rd, 2010, 01:43 PM
the still life are looking cool man, in the first the pot looks awasome you captured the metal surface on both the pot and the can really good.
in the second one the porcelain could use more refinment as it is a very smooth metrial and the surface is usually very uniform so as a quickie it looks great, you managed to get the feel right as utself without regarding the time it could use more blending on the porcelain as I already said :)
keep it up
DK_sketch
April 24th, 2010, 12:07 PM
@ Malakuko: thanks man. Well it´s not really the saturation that bothers me it´s more the rendering that im not sattisfied with, but I just have to work harder :)
@ MIKETAYLOR: thanks. yeah I will keep doing those :). yeah i gotta do more anatomy studies I will get right on that.
@ LostFayth: thanks and yeah try it out it´s really fun :D.
4 hours :O ooooh god that´s gonna be hard, but im trying to work on that patience thing;)

April 30th, 2010, 05:18 PM
My goodness! So much work. :) I love that ps sketch of the room with light coming in the windows. I'm going to have to agree with Vatsel!
I think you could do with slowing down a little, and checking proportions a bit more. Just as an example, check the lengths of the vertical sides of the pencil sharpener in your study. The back ones are longer! Slowing down can also apply to brushwork. Make one stroke count for what you're using three for right now. Using traditional paints really helps cement this into your brain.
Awesome work mate. Looking forward to seeing more! :sungod:

Pixie Trick
May 3rd, 2010, 08:09 AM
Lovely work on the onions! I personally think the one on the plate is better because you got the values more correct. If you squint at the second the lighter area by the front really flattens it.

May 9th, 2010, 10:11 AM
You have gorgeous colors dontcha you know?
A few notes on post 155- Watch the form of the onions. You have the onion shininess down pat, bit in a few places it supersedes the form. Try the whole squinting trial. Also watch the highlight on the girl's jaw. By making it one even highlight, you're not showing how the jaw curves and recedes.
The next post just awesomeness! Keep up the work and making me feel like a lazy bugger.

@ Joce: thanks:). hmm tips now there is a difficult one i usually start with just blocking in the color with a normal round brush with the hardness at 100 % and the opacity slider to a 100 as well. then i apply shadow and highlight and then some texture brushes for detail if needed.
Not sure if it helps. I can make a step by step for a new one?
@ Pixie Trick: hehe yeah the shoe took a while longer but it was worth it:).
the second one was a bir more rushed, cheated and used texture brushes right of the bat for the garlic:(.
@ jskotte: thanks alot, it´s actually starting to get fun doing those feet :P
Så får jeg at se om selvportrætterne er korrekte:P. ser frem til det.

coooooooooooool stuff man, I've been doing lots of drawing but all those still life's are making me feeeeeeeeeeeel lazy. Lovely colors though, I'd like to see some that are more refined though, spend a little extra time in the initial drawing stage to get all the proportions hammered down then render the shit out of it.

I wouldn't call that nothing, looks good, really like the colors in the sunglasses.

I see what you doing... ) Really hard work. Doing lifestudies is hard, but it really helps. Just don't forget to do environments too. View from window and stuff. You'll get the idea of global lighting. Btw really good digi girl portraits.

You're poor plant. :( It looks like it's had a hard life. :P
Nice work mate! I particularly like the plane in the hangar. It has a very nice contrast of warms and cools. All the images in post 170 are quite nice too!
I don't want to harp on this, but I really think working on brushstroke economy could really help you. The studies and imaginary ps sketches alike either use a lot of lower opacity layers, or a lot of small brushstrokes where one would do the job. Like you mentioned yourself, doing some 10 min studies would help with this. Actually, looking at the progress shots of the last study makes me think that you build up a base colour and then paint over most of it with your values. Just blocking in the base colour with a higher opacity brush could probably save you a nice chunk of time.
Meh, don't listen if you don't want. :) You're doing lovely work. :sungod:

@ Pixie Trick: Yes indeed. Im very bad at remembering to water my plants, keep forgetting:(.
hehe dont mind, just keep giving crit since that´s how i´ll improve:).
it´s a bid odd though cause i work with one layer only and my brush is set to 100% permanently but I guess I should try and work without a base color and just putting down the colors i see:).
Thanks alot pixie.
@ Seraph Fawkes: lol you are right, never seen the movie but i just googled it:)

let's see, what have we got here, for starters the plant still life could use the smudge tool in a less in the face manner and more of a subbtle approach.
secondly regarding the pieces of work in general is you need to add more areas where the edges are are softer to balance out all the hard edges you have there, refine them more and make them have a more finished look rather than just a speedpainting, although you're showing great skills in quickies and speedies you need to work on the finished side too.
other than that the girl need to have wider shoulders it looks like someone squised her from the sides, overall her face looks great the soft edges and all, her eyes look great as individual ones but together they seem a bit off they're line isn't unified each has one of their own, the greyscale still is looking good in terms of general values but it looks a bit of a mess other than that your work and studies look awasome :)

ok, figured some people said that before, but have to point it out again too, your life studies are really awesome!
The black and white huging figures, are they for salt and pepper or is it "just" decoration?
(you have them on page 5 or 6 and in another still in a composition)
Seraph Fawkes
May 23rd, 2010, 03:26 PM
I like girl in post 179, though there is a differences in the eye level and eyelids closed differently. But i like how you can already do quite abstract and fast painting, but very definitive.
Also an advice - try to do still lifes faster. I mean spend about hour-two and then stop. First of all, by putting yourself in such limits you'll be able to paint fasterm and the second - you'll gain ability to analize what you see faster, and when that happens - you'll understand light\shadow and will be able to render "from the head" with a good quality level.

@ oren90: Wow dude alot of crit, me like:)
yeah you are right i might have gone a bit overboard with the smudge, havent really used it before so im just playing around figuring out how to use it best:P.
Soft edges: already on it:)
yeah her shoulders are slanting rather alot, and those goddamm eyes:(
thanks for the crit man it´l help alot:)

well apparently the are for salt and pepper never been used for that though :/

great stuff man liked the enviro a lot and the pine apple too, one thing to say is that you need to do a study without regarding the time but the compeltion of the study, your quick ones are already quite good and you handle them well, but your finished work need more attention, get out of your comfort zone and break the routine of only doing quick studies, hope this helps :)
cheers

And that doodle is pretty great. I would maybe add a few more higher values on the girl, to really make her stand out a bit more, but the face looks really great.

The progress in your values is impressive.. Looks like your traditional sketches improved your lines also in digital too.. And proportions and other stuff like color, environments etc. seems allright, so keep sketching!

Really liking that last painting, it has a lot of potential and already looks good. Keep working on it and finish it off because it'll be great.
I am really liking your book so far, really enjoyable to go through. A lot of Algen's influence but I guess that will always change into your own style as you progress so no worries
Take care :) looking forward to more

I meant just watching to make sure that most of your brushstrokes served a purpose before you but them down, ie. less brushstrokes. :) Even more lovely work I see. Keep at it. :sungod:
